My husband and I have been eating at Cafe Red Onion for more than a decade and have introduced many other people to this wonderful restaurant. The menu items are unique, which can be a disappointment to people looking for traditional Mexican/Tex-Mex food, so I always try to warn people in advance. The prices are reasonable for the quantity and quality, but service has become a little inconsistent as the number of locations has grown. And I wish they would use a little less salt, especially on the chips. Nonetheless, I've never been disappointed by the food and we always count on a delicious meal.

I will never eat here again! It took OVER an hour to get our food. The waiter never came to our table before our food came out to ask if we needed refills or to say sorry for the long wait. When we finally got our food, i was very upset b/c they gave me what i said i 'didn't' want on my plate. I said only give me the fajita not all the sides. Well my plate was loaded with the rice and guacamole...etc, and i had to send the fajita back b/c the sides got mixed in with it. I do not recommend this place. My friends have also told me that the other Red Onion restaurants are the same way. Bad service and VERY long waits! Waste of time!!!

My wife & I went here on "date" night on saturday. We didn't have reservations and it looked like it was crowded based upon the number of cars in the parking lot...but when we got in, we only had to wait about 5 minutes before getting seated. Wife ordered wine and I got some kind of fancy, colored drink....i don't remember the name, but it was too sweet for me so I went back to my rum and coke. I ordered the chicken tiqual. I don't remember what my wife ordered, but she said it was delicious. The chicken tiqual was fantastic. I highly recommend it...the combination of flavors....who would've thought to combine some of these items together, but it is like a party going on in my mouth if you would combine some of the things on your fork and eat it together. We were too full to order dessert. I love this place, can you tell. Can't wait to go back and order chicken tiqual again.

I've been eating in Chef/Owner Rafael Galindo's places for years. His creative fusion of South-American and Caribean cuisine is second to none. He's constantly updating and changing the menu and his creations never cease to amaze me and my taste buds. As you might expect, the quality of the food and service can vary over time and from location to location as he has expanded to other locations and staff personnel come and go. I have seen some variation personally but, overall the experience has been positive to excellent. You really can't go wrong here with most entree's in the $10-12.00 range with some really astounding combinations of ingredients, colors and flavors. With names like "Mayan Chicken", "Cuban Pork" or "Chicken Belize" you really can't make a bad choice and I always make it a point to try something new. This is not a cookie-cutter run of the mill place and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The food here is incredible. There is a wide variety of Latin food all created with the chef's own flair. It's not just Mexican either...there is so much more than the standard fajitas and enchiladas. The food presentation is beautiful too - each plate comes out like a work of art. The food is delicious! Service was great too. The decor was casual but stylish. The prices are excellent for the quality of food. I will absolutely be back.

Pros: THE FOOD!!!

Cons: Gets pretty busy on the weekend

Cafe Red Onion is not regular old Houston Texmex to my surprise. It is latin "fusion" with a mexican caribbean twist. My favorites are any of their salads and always the seafood enchildas! This is a classy place, with low prices and every entree has a creative presentation. Service is consistantly great even at their busiest times. Their margaritas have something special...they're smooth, not painful to drink - almost dangerously smooth because they definitely pack a kick!

My first visit to the Red Onion was at their old 290 location, it's been nice to watch them grow through the years. I have been a long time fan of Rafael's culinary flare...the Pineapple Salsa is to die for... the Margaritas are awesome...& I usually let my waiter/waitress recommend my entree...I have never been dissappointed.
There is nothing on the menu my family has tried we have been disappointed with. The Medallion of Beef Colombia and the Chicken Brazil are always favorites. Presentation, value, atmosphere, Cafe Red Onion has it all!!! Kudos to Rafael for the breath of fresh air in a sometimes stuffy Houston restaurant market...

I've heard many good things about this restaurant, so I went for a visit to see what all the hype and talk was all about. I have to say that I didn't find anything interesting about this restaurant. The atmosphere wasn't impressive at all. Very crowded and the food wasn't good at all. The good was bland and tasteless.

After reading all of the amazing reviews me and my friends decided to give it a try...and we are SO glad that we did. Everything was fantastic...starting with the salsa and chips and ending with the amazing entrees. I had the snapper and it was fantastic. The service was great and the atmosphere is very cute. Definitely worth checking out! Great for a date, or a lunch with the girls, or an outing with the family...

I have tried this place many times and have yet to be impressed, for the hype surrounding this place far exceeds the quality. The dishes are subpar and not very exciting or tasty, yet people seem to gush about this place like it is truly an amazing place. Maybe I don't get it, but similiar quality food can be had down the street at Amazon Grill for a better price

CONS: food

No other restaurant in Houston has food this good for such reasonable prices. My only complaint is that there isn't one close enough to my house. They have three restaurants now and they are all in the same area. Not very ambitious.

I go to school in South Carolina and this is a restaurant I always crave whenever i get back to Houston. The food is awesome, particularly the Mayan Chicken and the pineapple salsa. It gets extremely busy sometimes, but that should just serve as proof that it's worth it.

We have dined at Red Onion numerous times on NW Freeway and Eldridge and the food is excellent, beautiful presentation, great yet different chips and dips. It is a wonderful change of pace from the regular restaurants and the lunch crowd on Eldridge is out the door.......

We've been meaning to try this place for a long time and finally did last weekend (3/05). I had the chicken Brazil and my fiance' had the snapper tacos. Both were high in quality, flavor and appearance. The pineapple salsa is ADDICTIVE...We are avid mexican food fans, but this is not your typical tex-mex, wonderful combinations of new flavors! We will be back soon!

I've only had their food once and it was take out, but the Mayan Chicken Salad was just an explosion of colors, textures and flavor. Salad dressing wasn't even necessary. The greens were a little limp but after a 20 minute drive back home, what do you expect. But it was still delicious. Absolutely beautiful salad and crispy drool-worthy chicken. Very good, healthy proportioned meal. Not recommended for feather-weight "house salad" eaters.

A group of seven of us got together for a friend's birthday. We all had a great time! The food was great, the service was efficient and polite and the mango margaritas were fantastic!!! Glad we picked this place - the complementary birthday dessert was wonderful :) We will be going back soon!

I don't want to even recommend this place because I am afraid the place will get busier. Great food, great service, GREAT Margaritas. I've been there several times that now when I go in to place my order I just say "Suprise me" to the waiter or waitress. I've never been disappointed.

This is a place I would take anybody, from executives to friends, and know that they will enjoy it. Amazing food, great service and articulate details in their ambiance and meal preperation. I was a customer when the restaurant was blooming at their old location off of 290. Amazing to see their evolution. With this place, you just can't go wrong!

Food is served with a artistic flair, & is tasty, but dishes are a bit redundant (same sauces & sides). Red salsa & pineapple salsa brought to the table are excellent. Pretty good service, seating is more prompt & parking is easier at the new NW Freeway location. But be aware that it's not Mexican food, but fusion food - a little Mexican, Central American, Caribbean. Ambience is okay, a little noisy because of echoing.

I have been to the Eldridge location twice now. The food is fabulous! The presentation is wonderful. I'm amazed at the combinations of foods and sauces they have that taste so splendid together! Flavors I've never tasted before! It's like heaven in your mouth! The Chicken Belize is out of this world, as is the "Honduran" (dessert). I highly recommend this restaurant. If you simply love trying something new, Cafe Red Onion IS the place! Kudos to the chef! God bless!
