I've been a member at SUMC since 2004. I've seen the ups and downs. I've heard the cover-ups. This church is so much more than than the sum of its mistakes. Matthew Mitchell came in, acknowledged the wrongs, addressed the hurt and then MOVED ON! No one is perfect, no business is perfect, no church is perfect. If you're looking for perfect, you'll be looking a long time. If you're looking for a place to grow in Christ, to see how fire can strengthen and to be welcomed with open arms then look no further. Please come to SUMC, join our family and worship like you've never worshipped before knowing that beauty comes from the ashes.

"Church" is people. And it's only as good as the people who regularly involve themselves in the work done there. To Steward S., Louis C., Free2Speak T., and Anonymous ... if you are the kind of people who go to Sugarloaf United Methodist Church, I'm staying away. And please, do the rest of us a favor and give us a heads up when you join another church so we can avoid that one, too.

If you have a problem with those people you've listed by name on this site (which is totally inappropriate by the way), then you should have sat down with them face to face and had a Christlike discussion in private. Using the Internet as you have here is unbelievable. Christians don't behave with such malice.

It's time to dive in and make this church great again! Sugarloaf is made up of WONDERFUL people! The location is great, the facility is top of the line and those who have made it through the tough times are rallying. There's no such thing as a perfect church or perfect leadership. But if you'll roll up your sleeves and do your part you can be part of something that makes a difference. Don't let the negative reviews fool you into thinking it's not a good church. There will always be people who have bad things to say. That said, your church is what you make it. So let's make it great again!

Loads of potential!
SUMC has had a rough go lately, but there are strong people of faith ready to move forward! And it's time!
If you want to be a part of a church that's ready to make positive moves in a positive direction, come on!

I know at least one of the negative reviewers on this page PERSONALLY. And to that reviewer: you had not one, not 2 but THREE affairs that I know about. You cheated your employer by claiming to work hours you didn't work. I know of 2 people you threatened with weapons. You have verbally attacked me and others --- AND you did these things while serving on committees at sumc and going on mission trips! There's MORE ---- want me to list the rest of what I know and put your NAME in print right here? If I did, would it be fair? Compassionate? Christlike? WOULD IT BE RIGHT? Would it help the church???

How about the rest of you negative reviewers? Is this how you christians solve your problems these days? is this how you build a church to your liking?

For a pastor to fail morally is a terrible blow to any church and is shameful -- but it's not unforgivable or insurmountable -- UNLESS the pews are filled with people like YOU with your claws out ready for the next kill. if it were me, i wouldn't repent to people like YOU either. what would be the point? to get eaten alive??

Religion has ALWAYS been big business! Don't like it? Change it! But you know what? You'll NEVER change anything when you deal with church problems by slashing and gashing your church ONLINE and through gossip disguised as prayer requests. no wonder the umc is dying. no wonder sumc bit the dust. Congrats! YOU helped!

Well played, "Christians" ---- well played! ------------------------- NOT.

Members of Sugarloaf please help us. We have a terrible problem within the North Georgia conference at Glenn Memorial. Similiar to yours and the Conference is no help. What is happening inside the Methodist church? Is it really just big business as my Dad says.

I was a long time member of Sugarloaf United Methodist Church. For over 8 years I attended this church supported the activities and gave my tithes. Like so many others I bought into all the gimmicks and groups this church could offer. However when I found out how female members of the staff and congregation had been abused by the founding Senior Pastor and how he had lied to our congregation with the approval of the hierarchy of the Methodist Church I decided to leave. Sugarloaf United Methodist Church on the outside seems like a very nice place. Don't be fooled. It's a business peddling God and Jesus to ensure the clergy keeps making their nice 6 figure incomes. There a many better churches in the Duluth area to attended. I would never suggest this church to anyone.

If you desire to be a part of a congregation that actively and passionately "loves their neighbors," then SUMC is the place for you. Through all the ups and downs, the one thing that has remained constant is the focus on serving others and being the hands and feet of Christ. The new Grow Groups program, in addition to many other adult education classes, provides opportunities for adults to grow in their relationship with Christ and with fellow believers. The Sugarloaf Kids program is fantastic - high energy yet biblically sound. Your kids will have a BLASt! And, I cannot say enough good things about the Student Life program for middle and high schoolers. The kids are challenged to investigate and understand what they believe and why, and they are given many opportunities to live out and grow their faith. I only wish that I could have been a part of such great programs when I was young. It is a fantastic church for the entire family.

Staff members at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church can spend their time attempting to follow behind all the negative comments and reviews on the internet in a vain attempt to "shine" up the reputation of this corrupt church but in the end Stuart Green, Larry Parker, Kerry Lauria and Tommy Willingham will never escape the lie they have help propagate at SUMC. Scott Ray committed Sexual Exploitation of female congregations members. The staff and clergy of this church have covered up for him. Remaining congregation members are are'nt concerned about what happened because they only care about being seen. STAY AWAY FROM SUGARLOAF UNITED METHODIST CHURCH--SATAN IS ALIVE AND WELL THERE!!!!!

Sugarloaf is a special place for myself and my family. Through the years we've grown in our faith, made so many special friends, and enjoyed the blessings of being able to serve others. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing. If you have young children or teenagers, Sugarloaf has great kids and youth programs. They really are special and unique. I'd recommend checking out the website at sugarloaf.org. There are videos and a good overview of some of the different programs.

The previous reviewer is rightly very hurt and very angry, but that doesn't make h/her wrong. H/She speaks the truth and it hurts those of us who were suckered in. It hurts deeply, to this day. This church's leadership and much of the Conference Leadership still won't speak the truth in love, ask for forgiveness and receive GOD's grace. Until they do, the whole region, the denomination and the Christian faith suffers...greatly! May GOD bless the victims, heal the wounded, call out the sinners and redeem this situation in 2011. And may everyone call Scott Ray out when he visits the new Methodist church in Suwanee, or elsewhere in the conference until he admits his transgressions and asks forgiveness. Scott, then and only then, will you be set free. GOD bless you Tracy.
