This hellhole should be shut down for posing as a legitimate reptile store. They will knowingly sell you a sick animal, telling you lies especially if you are a novice Herpetologist. We purchased a ball python from here approximately 3 weeks ago and it was downhill from there. The poor guy was housed in an enclosure with a snake with a very bad respiratory infection. When the enclosure was opened, the employee remarked that the other snake in there was wheezing badly and quite sick. We asked if that could affect the snake we were looking at and were told no, that it wasn't contagious. Which is a total lie. No more than 3 days after bringing home our snake, began to exhibit symptoms of a respiratory infection. We took him to the vet a couple days later for antibiotics, which cost additional money.
When I called to report this to the owner, he was dismissive and told me that we just needed to raise the temp on the cage and all would be fine. Well, after following all care instructions to the letter, our snake just died in our kitchen.
The facility houses it's animals in unclean cages and houses sick animals in with healthy ones with no quarantine procedure for newly surrendered animals. The employees are basically just snake freaks with no real knowledge of snake biology or health issues.
Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from this place. The 30 day guarantee is only good if you buy the complete set up from them, so ignore the reviews below that say to just take the animal back.

A few months ago I went to the Reptile Room to get my first reptile. I am very experienced when it comes to working with and housing animals, but was pretty much clueless when it came to reptiles. I am the sort of person who asks a million questions and admit that I can be a little overwhelming, but I never felt like I was bothering anyone and all of my questions were answered. The owner suggested that I start with a bearded dragon based on what my expectations were for owning a reptile. I ended up taking home two little babies and I love them to death. They walked me through everything I needed to house my little guys and were very knowledgeable and gave me all the necessary information to ensure a long healthy life. I never felt pressured or like they were trying to sell me stuff that I didn't need.
I go to the Reptile Room at least a few times a week to get crickets and other supplies, and I have never seen poor or unsanitary conditions. Every time I walk in, there is a guy cleaning the enclosures. Even though I am a fairly new customer, I am always greeted like an old friend and there is always someone there to answer any questions I may have.
It's a reptile store, not a TGI Fridays, so you can't expect employees to wait on you hand and foot the second you walk in. I feel like the people who have posted bad reviews about customer service didn't ask for assistance, they expected it. Sometimes you have to make the first move.
I have grown to trust the employees so much that I even boarded my dragons there while I was on vacation for a week. When I brought them in the owner noticed that they were a little under weight and he offered to fatten them up and get them healthier while I was gone. He explained to me why they were under weight and taught me how to correct the problem. The boarding is very reasonably priced.
I am a tree hugging, vegetarian, animal activist, and I support the Reptile Room. :)

I live pretty close to this place and it was inevitable that I would wander in one day. As I entered I was drawn to the huge octagonal terrarium in the middle. That thing is awesome though who has that kind of space in their house? I was greeted by an employee who walked me through the pros and cons of owning various reptiles.
I wanted an iguana (like in the comic strip Foxtrot) but was nudged towards a different type of lizard .
That was two years and two bearded dragons ago. The dragons are still alive and well thanks to the advise and suggestions from both the owner and the staff.
They aren't a chain so they can't broker deals with vendors the way a Petsmart or Petco can, so if price is the only thing you care about keep that in mind.

Pros: Brightly lit and helpful people.

Cons: Local store prices.

I have never personally been to the Reptile room, but I work at a nearby Petco and I get at least one customer a month who comes in looking for supplies for an animal they bought at the Reptile Room. And EVERY SINGLE person I've talked to over two YEARS was not given the proper information on how to care for their animal. Substrate, heat, humidity, feeding instructions, terrarium size, etc. Reptiles are very sensitive animals and need to be taken care of properly. I am revolted by their lack care when selling animals. I can't imagine the bearded dragon I have being sold to someone who wasn't informed how to take care of him.
I do plan on going into the store one day to see myself what the conditions are of the animals. Although I feel like I will leave unhappy.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND. This place is filthy! infested with mites, they don't clean the cages very often, and i have overheard them talking about how they've forgotten to feed some of the reptiles for almost 2 months at a time.. so obviously they don't care about the reptiles' health. just cross your fingers and hope that you don't get a sick one. and to top it off, most of the time the people that work there are either rude or not helpful.

Recently went into the Reptile Room to buy a red tail boa with all the fixings. I received very little attention and got frustrated and ended up leaving. I found myself at Connies in Castro Valley where I was greeted and sold on a Red tail boa, an aquarium, lamp, and other things that we needed. If you are ever looking for a reptile, go to Connies, you will receive great customer service.

I can understand being upset about a dirty store or tanks full of mites. Really. Those things -need- to be fixed for the health of the animals. But here are a few things to keep in mind-

About the frog: Why wouldn't you check it thoroughly -before- you bought it? And the store has a 30-day warranty, correct? Take it back and get a refund!

About the snake with RI: As soon as you realize the animal you just bought is sick, you notify the pet store -before- the 30-day guarantee has lapsed so they can work with you to fix the problem. Find out if they want you to just bring the animal back for a refund or exchange. Some stores will even take the animal to their own vet for you, or let you pick a vet and reimburse you. Giving a store a bad review because they sold an animal with RI is one thing, but whining baout them not extending their already generous 30-day policy is STUPID. The store should have been notified sooner and the poor animal should have been taken to a vet.

The end. =)
(No, I don't work there.)

I bought two white's tree frogs here. When we brought them home one seemed fine but the other was looking sickly. It suffered all week, so we searched the internet and this frog had red-leg disease. He died.. It caused my family lots of grief. I would never buy anything here again!

Hello, My name is devon in early march of 2006 I bought a frilled dragon from "Reptile Room". My dragon was full of mites. I do not advise buying pets here. I thought I bought a $200 clean Lizard, not $200 of mites.

PROS: NONE
CONS: Mites
