Came here a month or so ago. Everyone was happy with their food (chicken BBQ, pork BBQ and 2 tofu BBQ). Service was attentive and bathrooms were acceptable. We are planning on coming back. The waitress was also helpful in steering away

I ordered the brisuits and it was so disgusting. It was blobs of fat cut into strips. when waiter asked how it was, I explained how all of it was nothing but fat and there was no meat in it. He smerked and said that's how its is supposed

Been to the Pit many times in the past, but it is losing it's luster - other and better choices out there. There have been a lot of changes in management lately, and the experience was different this time.

Bathrooms were NASTY.

I've been here, it's a really cool spot with a full bar. The pulled pork barbeque is amazing, not overwhelmingly drenched in vinegar, and the mac n cheese is sensational! It's a bit pricey, but I can see why the spot is so popular, great

I am sorry to say that I was very disappointed. The chopped pork was great as well as the brisket. But the sides were very plan, no flavor at all. We heard the place would be very busy and making reservations would be the smart thing to do, so we made them and arrived 20mins early and still had to wait because of a mix up....... services was not good at all, we waited and waited and people who arrived after us were eating before we even got our food. Nope I will not go again.....

The only complaint is that it's very crowded and busy. There is a good reason - it's some of the very best BBQ you can find anywhere.

There is a unique combination here of product quality and cooking technique. Ed Mitchel is an icon.

If you are in or near Raleigh, you need to put this on your list.

To sum up my experience...average food at above-average prices...My portions were not big at all...Their beer and liquor prices are outrageously hugh as well. Save your money and go to Smithfields for BBQ and fried chicken! As for the rest, I'd go to Bullocks or Dillards in Durham...

So I visited The Pit again for the second (and most likely last) time and just as the first, I wasn't too impressed. The folks who are raving and ranting must not eat a lot a barbecue. Anyway, coming from a family of pit cooking barbecuers could very well be swaying my opinion on this place. The southern side of my family is from one of those small, everyone knows everyone, pig picking every other day type of towns. It was literally just put on the map about a decade ago and has ONE stop light. So when it comes to true barbecue, I've practically been raised on the stuff, so any barbecue joint needs to really come strong with it, and the Pit just didn't. It's ok...if you don't know any better.

Pros: friendly waitstaff

Cons: It's more hype than anything

Went to the Pit on 6/24/10. For a $10, my wife and I each got the double combo. Food was excellent, and we more than got our money's worth. Entree came with a huge amount of fries, hush puppies, biscuit, and I tried a new side veggie dish they had (mushrooms, snow peas and carrots) that was very good. Overall, way more food than one person should eat.

I had dinner at "The Pit" on a very busy night - the Saturday before Mother's Day. It was a full house, yet the service was excellent. I ordered barbecued chicken, collard greens, sweet potato fries and a Diet Pepsi. (Yes, I had to cut calories somewhere). LOL!! The server was quite attentive and the portions were big, so I asked for a takeout box. I had enough food for lunch the next day! Without hesitation, I highly recommend "The Pit".

When I first walked into this place I was pleasantly surprised by the relaxing atmosphere. The food was unbelievable and a very reasonable price. I ordered ribs that were cooked to perfection, the meat simply falls of the bone, and macaroni and cheese that tasted better than any I have had! Bottom line... this place cant be beat.

I like this place and its had consistent quality of food and service. I like soul food and especially vegetables and this place really hits the spot for that. The food comes out very quickly, even if there is 100 people there. The beer selection is diverse but don't fall in love with a beer and expect it to be there for you next month because the beer selection is always changing. There are a couple of amazing bartenders that work behind the bar and have service down to a science.

My husband and I have been to The Pit twice; the first time, we were given a large table (no reservation) and plenty of elbow room. We didn't notice the people around us at all. The second time, when we had a reservation, we were crammed in between a couple with twin infants and a mother and son who were obviously unhappy, either with their meal or each other.
Both times we've been, however, we've been served excellent food and had knowledgeable waitstaff. I'm unclear as to who our tip goes to, since it seems as though multiple people wait on us, but I hope it's divided as fairly as possible.
Anyway, I've had the meatloaf, the chopped turkey, the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and the baked beans, all of which have been excellent. I also ordered the sweet potato bread with maple butter that came in a cute cast iron skillet but didn't like it much. The bread wasn't sweet, and while it didn't need to be, I expected the maple butter to be on the same level as the butter they serve with the complimentary bread -- it was not. Really, that was the only thing I've eaten that I have not liked.

Saw it on the Food Network & a recommended by a co-worker. Visited on a Saturday night for my birthday in the summer. Found parking on the street, across from the front door. Seated instantly at a roomy booth & our server was a "spunky" tattooed lady, which we didn't see much of the entire meal. Fried green tomatoes as appetizers: aren't heavily battered & lacked seasoning. A pitcher of sangria was watered down with ice but had a lot of fruit (small pieces apples mostly)....that's all I remember. A horrible review: but the entrees weren't memorable. And a bit more expensive than an average bbq joint (which is good b/c we overeat...but it's nice to bag your leftovers & enjoi them the next day).

From the complimentary valet parking, to the beer selection, oh and then you get to the good stuff. I ordered Fried Green tomatos and I'm glad there were people with me to help me eat them. From there my choice of 2 arrived(right on time I might add) I selected the Brisket and the Baby Backs. The Ribs were something of legend, the type of food that makes it hard to eat anything else for awhile. Kinda like that song you really love and just play on repeat. The Brisket though flavorful was a very fatty cut. I urge anyone who loves Slow cooked big flavor BBQ... scratch that anyone who loves food PERIOD to visit this place soon and often.

Cons: Long wait...but I know why

I actually went to dinner here and felt a bit under dressed, I never knew a BBQ joint could do this to me! haha, anyways, it was really no big deal but my food was certainly tasty and the sides all looked so good i had a hard time making my decision. overall its a great place, but it is definitely pricey, I had one beer and an entree and it was about $22...

A customer brought me and some co-workers some ribs from The Pit, and I've told so many people that they're the juiciest, most fall-off-the-bone ribs I've ever had! I love sauces, and eat sauce with a lot of foods, but there was no need for BBQ sauce with these ribs - it would have covered up the awesome taste of these ribs. I've sent many customers to your business, and everybody comes back raving!

I can't say that the food at the Pit was bad, it wasn't. My Uncle and Cousin came to visit me in Raleigh one weekend, and both raved about how they had heard of the Pitt from the Food Network and how it's unique history and award winning food was something we had to try. We talked about it all day and finally made our way over there expecting the most delicious BBQ we had ever tasted...boy were we wrong. The BBQ was okay, but definitely not worth the price. I've had better BBQ in hole in the wall run down places. The appetizers all sounded good, but the two we tried (Fried Green Tomatoes and Cheese Sandwiches) were not all that delicious. The service was ok, except for when a waiter dropped off food that was not ours and then left. I guess it's okay, but not somewhere you need to go when you see Raleigh.

This place is very impressive at first sight. Excellent beer selection. The food was incredibly mediocre. My husband's brisket was cold and leathery. I ordered the "blackened grouper" which was a lukewarm piece of barely seasoned fish. The side vegetables consisted of three tablespoons of steamed tasteless wax, or so it tasted. I actually ordered the Caesar salad with blackened grouper, but was brought an a la carte Caesar salad, followed by the grouper entree. My server assured me that he would "fix" everything on the bill, but it ended up costing twice as much as the salad's price on the menu. I probably should have pointed out the mistake, and now regret not doing so. As a former server, I try to be as forgiving as possible. We won't be going back to this place, though.

After watching Ed Mitchell's 'THROWDOWN' with Bobby Flay on TV we were eager to try out the restaurant. So, last Saturday we found ourselves comfortably seated in a corner of the restaurant. Everyone who was working there that day had a smile on their face, including our waiter who quickly came over with menus and introduced himself. .

The lunch menu is fairly extensive and very reasonably priced. There are nine starters to choose from, four salads to which you can have added either pulled or chopped pork, chicken or blackened grouper if you wish, eight sandwiches and ten different luncheon plates from $7.99 - $12.59 which include your choice of two from the ten 'southern' sides offered.

We were already on a mission to taste the Carolina Spare Ribs (plate $10.59) but wanted to see what`other fare the restaurant had to offer so I told the waiter we wanted to do a sort of a 'sampling' order for the four of us to share. He understood immediately and after taking the order brought us back four empty small platters so that everyone could serve a small portion from what was coming to the table. Here's our order and a few comments on the food.

Jalapeno and Cheddar Cheese Skillet Cornbread: Served in its own lhot skillet it was hard to taste any jalapenos but the bread was sweet and very moist....a real treat.

Vidalia Onion Rings: I'd never seen an onion ring quite like this before. The fried batter contained lots of pepper and other seasoning quite visible to the eye. The end result was a very light onion ring with loads of flavor. Served with a coarse mustard sauce that tasted like it was kicked up with a little horseradish. Very good.

Chicken Wings: The seasoning made these a little different from your ordinary wings. With what seemed like just a rub and little or no batter the wings are lightly fried and very tasty.

Fried Green Tomatoes: Served with a homemade pepper relish. The mixture of red and green peppers with onion packed a powerful zap of flavor and was one of the hits of the meal.

Barbecue Sliders: We opted to try the bbq this way. Finely chopped with a mild seasoning the smoke flavor was very mild as well but very pleasant. It's nice to find someone who still uses the whole hog instead of just a shoulder. You can taste the difference as well as see it in the texture. There are two sauces on the table. One, obviously an Eastern Carolina sauce which was fantastic and the other what the waiter told us was a Western Carolina sauce but it was brownish instead of red and tasted more like the brown sauce from Arbys rather than a true sweet and pungent tomato based Western Carolina sauce. The pork was served on a nice roll with a good basic coleslaw.

Brunswick Stew: More like a very good tomato soup than a true thick stew with lots of veggies and flavor. It was excellent but not what I would normally consider brunswick stew served at a traditional bbq restaurant.

Carolina Spare Ribs: I've probably smoked or grilled over 500 racks of ribs in my life and when I took my first bite of the Carolina Spare Rib I immediately said, "Oh, my!" My wife laughed at me and I told her "This is the best rib I've ever had!". The reaction was similar for everyone that tasted the ribs at our table. The ribs are so tender you can hardly pick them up without the meat falling off the bone. The sweet wood smoke flavor is intense but very, very smooth. No one wanted to use any kind of sauce on them. As they were it was absolutely fantastic.

Sides: Sweet Potato Fries, Mac n Cheese, Collards: All very good and nice additions to a plate.

Summary: All in all a fantastic experience. Good food, nice atmosphere and excellent service. At least three different waiters came to our table during the meal to make sure that all was well and to see if we needed anything. The next time I go though, I'll just order the a plate of the Carolina Spare Ribs for myself. They just can't be beat.

Raleigh has too many BBQ restaurants that electric cook BBQ & don't inject any smoke in the flavoring. The Pit does cook & smoke with a wood fire.

We started with the onion rings. I did not love them, but they were crunchy tempaura style, and had a black pepper flavor. The mustard sauce was very good, but the onion rings were not.

I had pulled pork, and the serving was a bit small considering all the sides were in little ramakens. The lil ramekin of slaw was also small... what, slaw cost nearly nothing to make. The lil ramikin of baked beans was OK, the kidney pinto beans mixed in well, but the black beans seemed to mess them up. I had green bean casarol also, not quite like mom made it, buttery flavors & very rich.... this was a good one. So my dinner was a B+

but I had to deduct for lousey hush puppies, and again serving 1.5 hushpupies per customer. It must have been that world shortage of cornmeal we all read about. The biscuits were OK, and they did give 2 per customer. They must have known they were better than hushpupies.

My friend had babyback ribs, but the looked & tasted like standard pork ribs. The meat was good although not falling apart. His dinner was a B.

So I would give the Pit a respectful, but not glowing low B.

but I had to deduct for lousey hush puppies, and again serving 1.5 hushpupies per customer.

Pros: real smoke cooked BBQ, nice atmosphere

Cons: lackluster food, not a value

.

the place is closed from 3-5pm, and we did not know this! so make reservations in advance or you will have to wait for at least an hour before getting a table and watching people eat the delicious food makes you HUNGRIER and CRANKIER! it makes you salivate HEAVILY...and you can't do much but watch.
The decor is pleasant and the service is alright. The bathroom is nice.
The exterior is deceiving of how classy the interior is and how great the food will taste. the MEAT is DELISH! AND TOTALLY FALLING OFF THE BONE! LIKE DAAYUUMM!
southern food all the way!!!! (and we're not even from the south!)

I love the Pit. Their BBQ is great and the sides are fantastic. We usually go there for Birthdays or when we have folks in from out of town. Ironically, I raved and raved about this restaurant to a guest who was a hush puppy virgin and they were out of hush puppies when we got there. Really though, I find their hush puppies a little texturally lacking... just a bit. Their banana cake (when they have it) is fantastic, too! Only complaint is the price, otherwise, love it.

I've read about this place from many sources and the reviews all make The Pit ever more legendary. We finally tried it and were impressed by the Baby Back Ribs. It is different from Memphis or other Deep South BBQ: not heavy in sauce but rely on the meat and wood themselves. I love the smokiness. I guess this is the North Carolina style, as the menu suggested (?)

Some other dishes that are great: baked beans, hush puppies, butter. Fried chicken was mediocre, so was the pulled pork.

Waiter was very nonchalant. He looked like he would rather be at somewhere else.

Met our previous neighbors from North Raleigh here-we had all heard and read about it-what a disappointment!!! One of us had ribs (covered in sauce and salty), two of us had pulled pork ( had to keep pouring on sauce to get any taste out of it) and one of us had fried chicken (had been cooked that morning and served that night). Our waitress was very "'sweet", but clueless.......the girls had red wine which she brought out poured and put the cork back into-and commented that she loved wine-it was just so flavorful-whatever.............after all this was a BBQ joint. We ordered our drinks and dinner and our dinner literally appeared in front of us within 3 minutes-we all just sat there looking at each other. The waitress somehow disappeared and we had to go in search of our own sauce, etc. Ed may have beat Bobby Flay in the rib-off-but I am convinced that it was all "paid" advertisement and Bobby got paid off just to make Ed look good.

Went to the Pit a few weeks back after being told about by an associate. I must have had really bad timing because my experience was lousy! It was just after 1:00pm and I ordered the NC BBQ plate with Fries and Slaw. Well...this Nasty waitress (and I mean Nasty demeanor and she smelled like an ashtray with major B.O.) told me that the deep fryer was broken and I would have to choose another side! So I asked for the beans, even though I really enjoy Fries with my BBQ. Well, about 10 minutes later, she brought my Sweet Tea (man, this girl really had issues!). As far as the food went, the BBQ was good, but not as good as we used to get from OT's BBQ, which used to be on hwy 55 near Apex...that was GOOD STUFF! ...and my Beans were barely warm. I would love to go back since there are so many good-looking things on the menu, but I'm not going to risk my hard-earned money!

I loved this place when we walked in. Homey, yet upscale. Not your typical BBQ joint. We ordered drinks and a chicken wing appetizer to start. While waiting on our drinks we ordered our dinner. And then waited on our drinks.... I had taken a sip of one of our drinks when the appetizer was delivered. One minute later our main course arrived. We barely got to eat the appetizer! For the main course, my fries were cold and soggy and the food was semi-warm. The hushpuppies and biscuits came after the main course. We ordered a second drink during the main course, which came after dessert. I like this place, the meat was tasty, but the service was so inconsistent. Slow, fast, slow. We'll try it again for the ribs and BBQ, but if the service and temp of the food is the way it was, we will not be back.

The Pit indeed serves some of the best authentic barbecue I've ever eaten. Even the sides tasted like they came right out of my mothers kitchen. I couldn't have been more impressed with the quality of the food and the wonderful service. The only drawback were the rather large amount of flies that joined us for lunch, but hey, I can't blame them.

Having moved to NC from Texas, I haven't been thrilled with the barbecue here because I'm used to something different. I took my work team out to The Pit--Authentic Barbecue for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the barbecued chicken, and while it wasn't like home, it was very good. The others, who were primarily from California, were happy with their food too. And the staff was great with my large party. I recommend The Pit--Authentic Barbecue.

The food is good, but it is not worth the price Mitchell is charging. I understand that Hatem and Mitchell are trying to create an upscale environment, but it's barbecue! Even the sides, like mac and cheese and collards, are simple and are WAAAY overpriced.

Good BBQ. Great menu and good options, however the prices are a bit high for what you get. We considered this place to be kind of BBQ for the elite. When I was there we saw several police officer parties there, so perhaps it's considered a cop-friendly place? Anyway, good in a pinch, if you're up to spending the money.

Our meals were incredible, but the total was a bit high for barbecue, chicken and sides. This is good Eastern NC barbecue with all the usual sides, but with a big city price attached. The waitstaff was attentive and the plating was pretty. We'd only go back on a special occasion, due to the price.

Wow what a great experience. Ed is a very personable guy who takes time to cater to his customers. The wait was worth it as the BBQ was very authentic just the way we like it here down South. You have to try the ribs, one of the best we've ever eaten. Thank You for making our weekend.

Pros: atmosphere, food especially, love the ribs

The barbecue was only average, the service was pushy, and the prices are ridiculous. Cornbread is a $4 add-on! If you are looking for a pretentious atmosphere and overpriced EVERYthing, this is the place for you!

This place is definitely the Pit"s"!!! We were greeted by the snottiest hostess to ever live and waited on by the most inept server in Raleigh. The food is mediocre at best, overpriced, and the owner is too hokey for words!!
Have they ever heard of the progressive South in this place? Throw away the overalls, buddy. The largest portion of all the foods on our plates was the grease!!

(REAL BBQ): Staff and service problems aside, The Pit is a temple and an absolute masterpiece of what NC bbq is and what it should be.
Any questions about that? Ask Mr. Mitchell (The Pitmaster) himself, as he's usually there working his butt off for "the man." There is no doubt of three things:
1. Ed Mitchell is the end-all, be-all in NC BBQ (and one of the nicest gentlmen in the State)
2. Greg Hatem is the Prince of Darkness and a genius.
3. Your mother will love you if you take her to the Pit for her birthday.

I love BBQ and The Pit is one of the better places i have been. The food was flavorful and it was a decent portion. I got chopped BBQ, and it was everything i expected. The environment was up-town and I felt out of place considering it was a barbeque place. Service was not so hot either. Waited ten minutes for menus and 40 minutes for a hamburger, salad, and the pork.

The food is fantastic, and this is the nicest, most upscale BBQ place I have ever been to. Yet the prices are not. The prices are a pretty good bargain for what you get. The chopped pork BBQ plate is worth all the praise it has received in the press. Check this place out.

This place has great bbq..... but you knew that.... I asked the water if he favored the pulled pork or the brisket... Boy was I surprised when they said Brisket!!! A great choice!!!!!

For something different. Order the wings appetizer.... Smokey and almost tasted like bacon from the pit... boy was i surprised!!!!!!

Great selection of brews...

Great atmosphere, food and drinks for a budget conscious night out.

I have been to the pit three times and have enjoyed the food on every occasion. The BBQ is first class not to mention there decedent desserts. And try the tofu BBQ it made me almost a vegetarian. The pit says there southern fried chicken is the best in town and it honestly was the best I have had. The pulled pork is excellent and not overdressed with spice. But you have to try the vinegar eastern style hot sauce chopped turkey (wow- you will be a fan for life) As far as portions I have always left the pit with a to-go box.
