Although this hospital has a good trauma center, it goes drastically downhill once you get into a room. The ICU unit is a nightmare. When my son was there, there were gnats flying around in his room and his basic needs (i.e. clearing blocked drainage tubes, cleaning him up, replacing soiled linens, etc.) were not taken care of by the nursing staff, while they sat around discussing things such as where they got their nails done. Doctors were phantoms, meaning you could only talk to them "when they were doing their rounds in ICU", yet, during their rounds, the ICU doors were locked and they came and went through back hallways which were inaccessable to patients' families. This hospital will lie to you and do irrepairable harm to patients if it suits their needs at the time. Our "social worker" (who are assigned to you by the hospital whether you want them or not) was lazy, vindictive, and tried everything in her power to keep us from getting our patient transferred to another hospital, even going so far as to take our paperwork home with her in order to prevent others from being able to assist us. Not all, but the great majority of the nursing staff we dealt with were lazy, incompetent, and had a very bad attitude. Although the Atlanta news wants to talk about this hospital being "under-staffed and under-funded", that was not the problem. There was plenty of staff available and soap and water is not very expensive; these people are just plain lazy and uncaring. We had no choice about being there because my son was Life-Flighted there after being in a car accident; if we had, it wouldn't have been Grady, as this is not an isolated example.. If given a choice, I wouldn't even take my dog there. Luckily we got him transferred and he lived. I don't believe he would be alive today if we hadn't gotten him moved from this hell-hole.
