The Balsam Mountain Inn was bought and lovingly restored about twelve years ago by a friend of my wife's first cousin. An old turn of the century railroad inn, this lovely wooden inn is a sublime place to stay while exploring western North Carolina. Their french toast was memorable, as was watching a full moon come up over the mountain top the first night we stayed there. Have not had a chance to visit in several years, but truly enjoyed our stays (2).

This turn of the century inn is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains just a short drive from Asheville. When we stayed here, the outside need a fresh coat of paint, but that didn't take away from its charm. The inn is filled with art and antiques. The restaurant is fantastic, and the innkeepers are warm and inviting. Sit on the porches and enjoy sunrise over the mountains. Look for reviews in Southern Living, too. This is a great romantic inn in a beautiful, peaceful location with tons of character.
