String's cafe is not just a place were my family and I go eat, its like at home the moment we step into the restaurant. It's elegance and great variety in food makes this place our # 1 stop either it being for lunch or dinner.. want to thank Cesar & Sam for always making us feel like at home the attention they provide and the excellent service. We ate their today for lunch and as always the Salad is superb great fresh taste I don't get anywhere els. One of the best artichoke dip can only he found here at strings.. great taste and the toasted cheese bread gives it its right touch. If your looking to get your moneys worth try their Spinach Pepperoni Alfredo its the perfect dish that just hits that spot... if ur looking to eat Italian this should be ur #1 stop.

My wife and I went to Strings in Merced, CA for a nice dinner for two as tonight was the kid??s night to stay with the grandparents. This is the third time we have had dinner at Strings and was by far the worst experience we've had. I could easily exceed the 5,000 character limit for this review so I'll do my best to summarize. We arrived at 6:30 and were seated fairly quickly. The complimentary bread arrived at the same time as the soups and salads, not before. The soup tasted like it was cooked in used dish cleaning water. Salt and pepper couldn't come close to helping. Our dinner items, which were in the $15.00 range each, contains small portions sizes. Last year the portions were much larger. I left the restaurant still a bit hungry. My wife's dinner, the meat lasagna and meat tortellini combo contained barely enough meat to fill a shot glass. Frozen pizza rolls from the grocery store have more meat in them. When we asked if she had received the right meal, the waitress came back with a menu and asked if 'we had ordered wrong'. The manager comes by the table 'twenty minutes' later to address the issue, makes no apologies, tells us that all the food is pre-packaged "as is" at a central kitchen, and offers to throw in a free side order. Our waitress disappears in action after this and the one time she comes back to the table, she has a very poor attitude. We finish the meal at 7:40 PM. I had to flag down a drink server to request our waitress bring the check. Ten minutes later, I try to flag down another waitress who actually turns her head away as she walks on by. We then get up and walk to the hostess desk at the door. Two servers/waiters come by and ask if we would like to be seated. We have to tell them that we just want to pay the check and leave. The Eagles song "Hotel California' is playing in my head at this point. Five more minutes pass and our prodigal waitress shows up with the check. She actual has the nerve to say "You weren't supposed to move because the manager wanted me to offer you a free desert". We decline the offer and wait five more minutes before I have a receipt to sign. If I could have written in a negative tip amount, I would have. Through all of this, I see the manager talking on the phone and not paying any attention to the restaurant. There was also around ten to twelve people waiting for a table with at least three tables/booths open for nearly a half hour. If you are looking to for a nice dinner for two, there is a "Wing Stop" right next to Strings that offers better quality at a better price, and much better service.

i used to work at this strings in merced i thought we ran everything according to plan. we had good food, timely service, and friendly hosts. if there are open tables and you arent sat, you might want to think and ask if those tables might be reserved for a bigger party. strings only takes reservations for SIX or more just to clear that up and gratuity can be put on parties of EIGHT or more. im sorry we are not deangelos and it isnt finedining but strings brings honest good food and friendly service no matter how rude you wanna be.

Very good overall experience! The minestrone soup tasted homemade. My wife loved her pasta dish. My fish was excellent. The bread was great. The service was very good and the prices are reasonable. We'll be back!

We have been there many times for lunch and have never been disappointed. The quality of the food and services has been excellent, with modest prices. Great salad, don't care for the soup. We recommend Strings to our friends.

I've gone to Strings once and had a terrible time.

I took a date that had a broken foot and we waited outside for 15 minutes when there were over 20% of the tables available. When I asked why this was, the host explained it was "just how they ran the business". Well wouldn't it make sense to give us a table since there was no line and clearly she was on crutches and her leg in a cast? They were dumbfounded. Then I asked, well couldn't we just make reservations? No. Strings has a policy of not making reservations for only 2, only 4 or more people. We left without being seated. I called and spoke to the manager, he offered a discount if we came back. There are too many good restaurants to spend any time or money at Strings in Merced.

PROS:
CONS: Arbitrary Wait, No Waiting Area, No Reservations, Bad Host

I took my teenagers to this restaurant when they first opened in the Summer of 2005. We had high hopes. They were not very busy, and the wait service was very poor. I thought to myself, well they have a new staff, its a new restaurant and the food will probably knock our socks off. I was wrong. My fettucini w/prawns was totally lacking in flavor. The kids ordered pizza and they didn't really care for it. They described the food as being one step above Sizzler. To me it seemed like they used packaged or canned sauces for their dishes. And realizing this is a chain, they probably did. It was just totally lacking in flavor. Blah Blah Blah. I waited a few months, then decided to take my husband there without the kids. There was no improvement in service or food. The waitresses were lacking in basic waitressing skills. In addition to having zero personality. The bread guy came and took our bread away without even asking us. When he reached across in front of my husband to grab the bread basket, my husband had this look on his face like WTF?? And I told him to just forget it. The people that work there have no training in people skills. The waitress never even came around to offer my husband a refill of his iced-tea. Again the food was bland to say the least. I asked the waitress if she could please bring me some garlic powder. She said they didn't have any. We have not been back since. I think the people in Merced are so used to receiving sub-standard service, that they think this restaurant is a great place to eat. Sad really. If they ever ate at a quality Italian restuarant in Southern California, the Bay Area, or even Thomaso's in Eureka, they would never settle for food that is on the same par as Sbarro.

PROS: None
CONS: Blah food, bad service, wait staff lacking in personality & people skills

i was very excited to hear a Strings would be opening here in Merced. I have been to one years ago in Redding and loved it. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is pleasant, the service good, and the food terrific. Strings has only been opened for about 5 months and I've been there 4 times. It is always a pleasant experience. In fact, for Prom this year, my son and his group of friends chose Strings for dinner and they all loved it.
