AEC's owner & manager has graciously allowed California's Gold Rush Equestrian drill team to use they're arena to hold our weekly Sunday practises in the late afternoon. Thank you so much for supporting the sport of drill riding at your wonderful facility. And, the horse community on a whole.

I've seen the best of AEC and the worst. And right now is the worst. There tends to be drama at the barn but its easy to stay out of.
Everyone makes a huge deal out of the huge arena but in reality the ground is crap.

The worst part is...their feeding the horses STRAW! Cattle feed. Its disgusting most horses dont even want it, the owner is to cheap to buy better food for the horses and they tend to not even feed that much, you'll be lucky if your horse really gets a full flake of this cattle feed.

Excellent facility. I was very impressed by the care of the horses and the changes that the new owner has made. As for the drama, I don't get into it and it doesn't affect me.
I really enjoy the staff and know that my horse is in good hands. Feed is consistent, the owner is available and a good listener, and I appreciate al the work that goes into the place.

Overall my experience at Almaden Equestrian was great. I never got involved in any barn drama, and I never had any problems with other boarders.
The management at AEC is wonderful, very nice and accommodating. I never took lessons from any of the instructors here, but I wouldn't suggest using Happy Horse Riding. L's students didn't seem to have very much control over their horses.
As for the boarding facility, it's very nice. There are a couple pastures, tons of stalls, paddocks and plenty of areas to turn out your horse. The HUGE sand arena is more than enough room to school your horse in ANYTHING. There are barrels, jumps, poles, pretty much anything you want to do with your horse is available here.
The only reason I left is because I'm going to school in a different city. I would definitely bring my horse back to AEC.

I've experienced the good and the bad at AEC. I've seen my fair share of crabby boarders and disagreements. When I first came to AEC I was unhappy, but now I have finally settled in. I like the facilities, my horse is well fed, and I can exist there with little or no trouble. I think alot of the problems arose from conflicting personalities, but that happens everywhere. I'm sure there are people who talk behind other people's backs, but as far as my experience goes, everyone in the horse world has a different opinion, and you just have to learn to co-exist with people, whether you like them or not. My best advise is to stay out of other peoples' business, and just go your own way. Overall I am very happy there now. I co-exist peacefully with everyone, the arena suits my purposes (although it could use some more jumps) and my horse is happy, and a happy horse is all that matters. I can go to the barn and enjoy myself, and I have not seen drama for quite awhile. I'd recommend it.

Family feeling and the love for horses is my experience at AEC.
My students and their families come out every week to enjoy the whole riding experience, from the outdoors feeling, the old growth trees along the year round creek, to the sites and smells of a long time horse facility. Home to one of the largest sand arena's in Santa Clara County and close to riding trail, just off the property.
Many types of riding styles are shared by the boarders. Western Pleasure, Barrel Racing, Reining, cattle rustling ( off site ) English Pleasure, Jumping and Dressage. Many of the boarders compete thru the year at local and regional shows. We often go out to the shows and cheer each-other on. And share the stories, ribbons and trophies( Saddles, belt buckels and more).
We have a sense of growing pride with our AEC Family and miss our friends who have moved on and welcome new boarders when they move in.
We have some new horse stalls/paddocks just completed and an additional area for horse trailer parking will be added soon. More stall and paddock improvements to come.
If your have the interest in leasing/or partial lease of a horse, there a few available by private boarders, please contact the management for details.
The feed for the horses is extensive-now providing orchard grass hay, oat hay and alfalfa.
The staff is also extensive. Providing a flexible availability and resourse for the many day to day needs.
Kind Regards, Janet Lloyd-Davis Instructor and Boarder

Not all of the statements in the other reviews are true. Most of what has been posted is not what happens or even takes place there. The ranch has under gone a lot of changes for the better. I reccomend you come check this place out for your self. Then you can make up your own mind and not let someone else paint a bad picture of this place. They may not be perfect but they are doing what ever it takes to make it a safe, fun, clean and positive environment / experience for boarders, guests and animals.

As the Lazy A this facility was a mess. Since the new owners have taken over it has shown great improvement, and the facility continues to improve. The owner has spent a lot of money on improvements, and they continue to do so. Some anonymous posts say that the owner doesn't care about the ranch, but I assure you that this is far from the truth. Improvements are being made all the time. I find AEC a pleasant and peaceful place to be, and I have found the owners to be friendly and helpful. In my experience, the owners listen to any issues concerning the facility, and act quickly to address them. Many boarders have been there for years, are happy with the continuing upgrading, and would not think of leaving. The recent addition of a snack shack is a convenient upgrade that allows us to get some goodies to eat and drink if we are there for a long time and forget to bring something to drink or snack on. I have helped out on some of the improvements at AEC as have several other persons that do so on a volunteer basis. Some are boarders, and some are not. AEC is a wonderful piece of property in a very picturesque setting. The amenities are indeed old, but the facility is a safe place, and any issues with the facility are taken care of promptly if the management is informed. Boarders must communicate with the management if they have needs. Complaining to other boarders is not a viable way to get results. Personally, I would recommend AEC as a facility to board your horse. They are close in to San Jose, and rates are very reasonable. Check out their web site for details on their services.

Just a few comments, I'm only speaking from my experience there.I too was boarded there, left after many conflicts with one certain person, a so called short, bitter, female trainer/asst.manager. Since the owner did nothing and let the matter continue, I felt it best to leave. As far as the other stuff written, I can only speak for me, the feed was sub-par,never knew when they fed, terrible on repair;s, lot of know-it-alls who knew little. The facility had promise, but nothing ever done.I know I own horse's for the pleasure not the gossip, which seems the priority there. My horse's are happy at there new place, good feed, you can set a clock when they feed, the people are nice, and work is always done when you ask.

The arena at AEC, is the boarding facilities best attribute, when it is worked up on a regular basis. The recently added snack shack is a great addendum when it is open. The new barn managers are open to new ideas but the place is a lot of work for the limited time spent on the place. There are 2-4 different people feeding throughout the week, so it is hard to keep your horse on a consistent diet when there are so many hands on the hay. There needs to be someone there full time, but there isn't. Manure piles are often over-flowing and aren't kept up on a regular basis. For the most part, I would reccommend boarding there, but it is definitely a work in progress.

I use to board my horses there a few months ago at the time I thought it was a great place for my geldings most of the people were great and helpful to my girlfriend and her son but you had people who backstabbed you and swear that they were a great barrel racer cause they had a california 19 year old horse who was crippled I wont say names. The only real good thing I could say about that place was the manager Nancy but as I was reading the comment below that they let her go thats too bad. I will never board there again( not too mention they have a crazy red headed lady there I dont mean the owner)

Boy, would like to know who paid that person in the last article! I moved out in November of this year after 3 years of crap. The owner's promised changes, but got worse. They had a very good manager in Nancy, pushed her out because she didn't agree with owners on changes for the better. The place is run down, poor feed, never know when horses are fed. Very snobby as one writer put.A lot of backstabbing. Glad to leave, and I'm sure they are glad I left! Never had a problem telling them how I felt.

My horse has never been so happy and relaxed. She is well fed. The quality of the food is excellent and if you want your horse to be fed extra, just ask. There won't be any extra fees, unlike some places. People care about the animals and are on top of things. The arenas are in very good condition, with very good footing and the larger arena is just a blast to ride in!
They keep the stables clean and safe. The people are extremely helpful and this is a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The price of the board is average. I'm thankful to have my horse there!

I used to board here- for 7 years. I left a year after it was sold. The rates just went up and the quality didn't. This place was definitely a dump before- but it was affordable so it attracted 4-Hers, teens and trail riders. It was a great atmosphere. But under the new ownership, the care was not the same- pasture horses were regularly underfed. In the end I got tired to signing away owner's rights, saying they could do whatever they wanted and charge me (without calling me first).

Pros: close to San Jose, largest arena in the area
Cons: the owner, old everything (can't even take an X-ray because the electricity is so bad in some barns), rates and "snobby" atmosphere
