Do not use this group for your pediatric care. One of their physicians deceived my wife and I in the following way when we were recovering at Rex.

Our insurance had changed providers with the new year and RP did not accept the new provider. Being the week before our due date, we had a few other things on our minds besides managing this change.

But that didn't stop the RP on-call physician attending to newborns at Rex.

Even though he knew that our insurance would no longer cover his visit he went ahead and did the exam without asking our permission. AFTER he was finished he informed us of our insurance problem.

Now we are stuck with the bill. Seems wrong to me.

I'm sure there are many responsible and professional doctors at this practice but this one convinced us to go elsewhere.

It looks like me may have to find another practice. They dropped our insurance and it has become too much filing and keeping up with the claims of all of the children. I hate leaving as my children have been at the Garner office since my oldest was an infant. However, when it comes down to providers and the ins. companies, I feel that the patients get the short end of the stick. Wish they would start accepting my ins. again.

Do not take your children to RP! I have a newborn. To make my review short, I have to say the doctors don't listen and don't care about the patients! They say "that dosen't worry me" or " that's normal". I didn't feel relieved about the concerns I had when I left their office!

i was relieved to read some of the other disappointed mom's reviews on this site, and in particular regarding dr helms. we are new to the area and were looking for a pediatrician. this facility and nursing staff were wonderful, professional, kind, thorough, attentive, and excellent. then in came the doctor. by the end of our appointment i was wondering if this guy was for real. forced fakey bedside manner. he had a big grin on his face the whole time not even listening to me, leaning on one elbow on the exam table...i know everything you know nothing attitude. he almost seemed annoyed by our questions and answered EVERY single one of them with "i'm not worried about that". um, excuse me, i am, or i wouldn't be asking you. also, practically no eye contact. after not answering my questions and contradicting advice our previous adored pediatrician had given us, he was ready to give the vaccine shots and i was like um were you going to examine my child? maybe ask him to say ahh? or perhaps look in his ears or his nose or take his pulse or listen to his lungs or anything? oh, yeah, i thought i had already done that, he says. you are kidding me!! then when i asked about when we needed to come back for the booster shots, he says oh, yeah, a year from now, and then he corrected himself on my way out the door, oh except for that other one should be a month from now. good thing i asked sheesh! awful awful. the nicest way to put it is to say he was a terrible match for our family. i was mortified by the way he pinned down my screaming child and stabbed the shots into his legs. our previous doc was so gentle that my child didnt even notice he was getting shots...amazing how very different doctor's styles can be. we will be changing practices based on our experience with doctor helms. prefer a smaller practice where we can have an ongoing relationship with a doctor we trust.

Wonderful doctors! My children have received the best care from this fantastic practice. I have a background in medicine and I must say that I am very impressed with the level of care and kindness I have always received. Dr. Helms has been wonderful to our children, and to us as well! He has helped our family through a very difficult diagnosis and his level of expertise, compassion and concern was such a blessing. I can't thank everyone in this group for all that they have done and continue to do for us!

I've been going to Raleigh Peds since my son was born (2005). I love going to my primary doctor, Dr. Allen Hewett, but I only get to see him once a year. Every time I have ever gone for a SICK visit I get a doctor who is uncaring and impersonal. (Dr. Helms & Dr. Rusher in particular). The reason I am writing this is because the last time I went, I made an appointment because my son had a HUGE splinter in the bottom of his foot (almost 2 inches), he couldn't walk on it; it was VERY deep and could not be taken out by me. He was also burning up and was extremely flushed. He was in pain, crying and would not let me touch his foot. When Dr. Rusher took one look at his foot, he looked at me and said they only scheduled 15 minutes for this appointment and it was not enough time to take it out. He said it wouldn't be fair to the other patients to make them wait if he took more than 15 min.. I asked if there was ANOTHER Dr. and he said NO. He then told me to soak his foot and see if I could push it out. WHAT MADE HIM THINK I COULD PUSH IT OUT!!! when he told me it would require cutting it out with a scalpel and numbing the site. He said I would have to COME BACK TOMORROW. He sent us AWAY. My son was in PAIN and he SENT US AWAY!!!! I decided to go to a Pediatric Urgent Care on Blue Ridge Road for help. I couldn't stand the fact my son had to wait another 12+ hours in pain. How would he like a 2 inch splinter in the bottom of his foot!! Anyway the doctor took us in right away. He took his temp and it was 103.4!!!! He said an infection was starting. He then gave him Motrin right away. Proceeded to numb his foot. After 20 minutes they started the procedure and cut the splinter out. The Dr. couldn't beleive how big the splinter was. He had a hard time getting it out. $375.00 later. I had a happy kid. It would have cost me $20.00 at Raleigh Ped's. The cost didn't matter; I was going to help my son one way or another! The doctor let me down and SENT US AWAY!!!! I will NEVER go back. I will miss Dr. Hewett! Problem is with this practice, you can never get the good doctors when you are sick....Moving on...A VERY DISAPPOINTED PARENT.

We moved to the area a few months ago, after questioning other moms in the area I decided to take my kids to Garner Pediatrics. I love this practice! We are always able to make same day appointments, the staff is incredible, and if I have a question for the nurse she always responds to my calls quickly. Best of all my kids like the doctors and nurses and feel safe when we are there. I have never had any clerical or billing problems. I am very confident we will be with this practice until my children outgrow them.

The more often I visit the less impressed I become. After three poor experiences, I am moving on. When asking questions regarding shots, I was treated rudely! I had done my homework and was still planning on following the AAP's guidelines, but I did want to work with my doctor on a different schedule than what they proposed for a several different reasons. The doctor heard what he wanted to hear, and than proceeded to give me what felt like a lecture. This same type of situation has played out with two other doctors as well. They simply provide cookie cutter answers, and honestly do not appear to hear anything the parent is saying. If you simply want a general standard of care that is convenient to North Raleigh, than this practice is fine. However, if you want some say in your child's health care than I would find another practice.

Had taken my two children to the Raleigh Pediatric Associates(Falls Valley Drive) for over a year because of a convenient location for me. Although you may be taken out of the waiting room withing 15 minutes, you will wait in the examination room for an hour before seeing a doctor. The practice is run like a factory. The doctors I saw did not care for my child as an individual and were very anxious to move on to their next "customer". The doctors I saw there were not conscientious. I had two experiences where I was not referred to a specialist when I should have been. (My child ended up needing surgery. The pediatric surgeon that I finally saw warned me that the care I had gotten from my child's pediatrician was irresponsible.) Truly, this place gives terrible medical advice. Please spare yourself and your children. Raleigh Pediatric Associates hires part-time or doctors who practice laissez-faire medicine and solely care about seeing quotas met and keeping their insurance costs down.

We moved to Raleigh from NYC and joined Raleigh Peds. We have nothing bad to say about the doctors and with two small children have visited them OFTEN. Each doctor we have seen was fantastic. The main reason we are unsatisfied with them is that in the two years we have been there, they have dropped two large and well known in the industry insurance carriers. The first year we were members, they sent out letters right before open enrollment about them no longer working with our insurance carrier. So we changed to my husband's company's only other option. Now, the second year in a row, we have received notice that this one too will be dropped. (of course after months of saying they were dropping the first one, they sent out notice that they did reach an agreement and still do offer service for this insurance carrier). This has been very stressful to our family and we have spoken to many families in the triangle area with the same insurance we have and this has NEVER happened in the practice they are in. For this reason, we will be leaving Raleigh Pediatrics. We don't want to flip-flop each open enrollment and be members of a practice which 'cries wolf' and stresses out parents. Great doctors, poor office management.

Started going to Garner peds when my first child was born more than 6 years ago. They are just as wonderful now with child #3 as they were 6 years ago with child #1. They will see you quickly when your child is sick - Many times, I would be offered an appointment before I could even possibly get there from my house. That is how seriously they believe in seeing your child quickly when they are sick. Never a long wait when going for well child visits. Wonderful doctors and wonderful staff. Dr. Johnson is awesome!

I have been taking my kids here for 9 years. I am now bringing my newest baby there. They are great with kids, and I can always get an appoinment.

I never have to wait long in the waiting room. I have been very pleased.

PROS: Can always get in , no long waits
CONS: older office, need new toys...
