I recently had a terrific experience with the Western Trail Riding Service. It was myself and my 10 year old friend named Tony who also takes weekly lessons at Las Trampas Stables with Cindy, the manager and trainer of the stable. We had the most enjoyable ride and we were carefully paired with their beautiful horses. I felt we were in safe hands, and would recommend the experience to anyone.
I am an avid rider myself, and I have found Las Trampas and the Western Trail Svc a very professionally run organization.
Unfortunately it had been my experience that there are always "sour grapes" to complain and be unhappy in what is a jewel in our midst..
Sometimes people's expectations and over confidence in their experience to ride sets themselves up for disappointment and angry people get angry. To keep everyone safe it is important to be honest about your experience, so everyone can enjoy themselves! Kudos to Cindy and Gary and the whole crew out there!
I have had two awful experiences with this company and in both instances, never got to actually ride a horse. Attempt number 1 was in September of 2004. A friend and I booked a ride, showed up at the concession and the guide and horses never showed up. Attempt number 2 was late August 2007 and was much worse. Asked to show up 15 minutes before our scheduled ride, we arrived more like 20 minutes early and decided to sit with our daughter to watch the horses. The woman running the concession (the same woman we booked over the phone with) was outright rude, chasing us away at one point and telling us to return at exactly 3 pm. We walked around a bit and then wandered back over at 5 minutes to. She yelled at us again, ordered us to sit at a picnic table (one we were already headed towards) and then made a series of phone calls from inside her little barn-office, all while smoking. In a barn. At the height of fire season. At 5 minutes past three we decided we wanted nothing to do with her. Our six year old only wanted to look at the horses and wait patiently for her moment. We asked this woman why she was so rude to us and she just cussed us out and actually jeered at our kid saying "too bad you won't get to ride because of your weird parents". My poor daughter was in tears. I will not print the language she used on us.
Avoid this woman and this concession at all costs. She has no business dealing with the public, especially children. Las Trampas park on Bollinger Canyon Road has stables only a few miles away with courteous staff and beautiful trails. On the day this awfulness occurred we drove over to the coast and tried Seahorse Ranch at Half Moon Bay. Staff were kindly professionals. Horses were in good condition. Trail was nice and we all had an excellent time.
When taking money for a service I think it's generally good practice to be kind and courteous to your customers. Something Western Trail Riding Service could use some lessons on.
