Beware of female woman taking your purse and giving it to your boyfriend so you can dance together. Then if she tries to take it from your boyfriend so the two of you can dance together....that is a con for sure. Luckily, we picked up on

I came here a couple months ago for a friend's birthday party. My friends and I were waiting in front of the line for a good 30-45 minutes, and the security guard told us its really packed in there and they are just waiting for an okay to let more people in. But obviously the security guards were picking other people from the back the line to go in. I asked why were other people allowed to go in before us, and he said they were on the VIP list. But so were we. I started to feel discriminated against because every other race was picked out of the line to go in except for mine. The birthday girl was texting us, and said there was hardly anyone inside. We decided to go to Envy instead. I vowed never to go to Aura again. But I came here for a friend's going away party a few weeks ago, and it was my worst clubbing experience. My friend who was leaving, she had a VIP package for 20+. One of my friends threw up upstairs. Then later on a security guy found me downstairs, and he accused me for throwing up and wanted me and some of my other friends standing with me to leave. I only had one drink, and I was sober. I tried explaining to them that it wasn't me, but they still wanted me to leave. They accused our entire party for being rude to their staff, roudy, and whole bunch of other BS. Its too funny cause I am the type person that anyone would least expect to be escorted out of a club. The VIP package is a joke.

This place is small, but the crowd there is a lot smaller as compared to what it was like a few years ago, so on the plus side, its harder for strangers to rub up against you or spilling drinks on you. I think the current crowd at Aura is around their 30's. The bartenders and other staff are not polite and doesn't seem to really care for your business. The drinks are expensive. The music is weak, nothing exciting, and I think my winamp program can do a better job. There are definitely better clubs in Portland with staff that will respect you. If youre planning on having an awesome night out with your friends, do NOT go to Aura, I think its more likely to ruin your night.

Pros: Its clean

Cons: Everything else

So I once came to this place 2 years ago had a blast with my girls so I though its my birthday and I want to go to AURA... HAHA BIG MISTAKE. First the so called VIP packages are a big Fing joke not even worth half of what they charge. I have a group of people go before me to make sure everything was ready and then I show up with my husband and two of by best friends get told my husband can't come in his pants are to baggy - a bouncer then points to the dress code and says you have to follow that. WTF there was no dress code on the website so how the F*** are we to know? So I call my girl who is inside and say my husband can't in we are leaving mind you she has already been charged $200 for S***** and i mean S***** food (which we do get to take home, big joke). So I tell my husband and 2 friends wait here I will go get my friend inside and we will leave. She then calls me to say the club will let him in so I look back to motion them in and they are gone, the manager came out and got them. Mean while I am waiting at the door trying to find them as I then found out they could all come in. Since I can't find them I get out of line, i was the next to get in the club mind you. I thought well maybe they went to the car, nope, I call all the cell phones and no one answers. I go up to the bouncer and say I am here for a VIP party and I am the guest of honor and all my guest already in there. He says sorry VIP entry is closed get in line. I stand in line for another 20 minutes crying and angry that my party is all in there and I am standing outside alone. I finally get up to the door again right behind another couple and my friend comes out and says there you are what are you doing. I said standing in like they said I had to. By this time I am bawling and just want to F****** go home. So i get out of line and she goes back in to get everyone else. To rectify this poor horribly experience the management cant give us back the money and I still never got to get in the club or experience my so called VIP crappy package. NEVER EVER EVER GO THERE, PLEASE go to where we went after that and that was STARS CABARET - where the manager treated us like gold and a sweet cute lady helped end out night wonderfully!!!

My wife and I went to celebrate our 9 th wedding anniversary. We searched the internet to find dining and dancing. We call Aura to make sure they had dancing, they said yes. Got a sitter for the kids and went. We were met by a below average server. The food was expensive for what we got. When we finished our dinner, we said that we are staying for the dancing; she (the below average server) said there was no dancing. Totally ruined our night. There are much better places to go. So if you are going to celebrate your anniversary, go some where else. BTW, I mailed a letter to Aura, one month later, no response, even though I asked for one.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Poor service and misrepresentation

I swear, the djs here must have inner-ear disfunction, because they absolutely LOVES them some horrible music. They just looooove a-love a-love to play some terrible tunes. It's like dancing in a children's cereal commercial: bubbly, sonic, quasi top-40 garbage that, unless you're a faithful Bad Top 40 fan, makes you feel like you're an extra in a Miami Vice re-run.

And even if you DID want to dance, good luck not getting shin splints. My girlfriend felt like she was dancing on a broken leg after only 10 minutes. What's that floor made of anyways? The tears of orthopedic patients?

And the general clientelle here are... well... somewhat dim, superficial, and extremely full of self-importance. And there must be an unwritten uniform code here, too, because all of the guys are wearing "dressy" tennis shoes, jeans, button up shirts, and hair gel, while the women are expected to wear short skirts and bachelorette-party attitudes.

Stay at home and dance in your living room.

You will be waiting in line for a while. The bouncers will move their friends from the back of the line to the front of the line, regardless of how long you and everyone else has been waiting. Pretty blondes who show enough skin will be given tickets that allow them to bypass the line entirely and go straight into the club. How's that for fair?

The DJ was the worst ever. Dancing to the music was impossible. Imagine taking a decent playlist and setting your player to track forward 30 seconds into every song. Try that at your next party and see how it goes over. The DJ absolutely loved the sound of his own voice and spent more time yelling into the mic than actually mixing his music into anything danceable.

While the bartenders were nice and the beers were what one would expect, the rest of the experience was frustrating and low class.

I will not be going back.

I visited Aura on Saturday Night 3/21 with about 10 friends some from town, and others were visiting for the Final Four tournament. We were just stopping in for drinks at around 11PM. I was surprised to find the bar not very busy, and we were able to belly up with about half of our group, the other half stood behind the barstools. The bartender was incredibly rude, and non-attentive. When asked what was on tap, he threw a menu at the gentleman who asked (he was standing behind the ladies sitting at the bar). The Menu struck one of the women in the face. Now I understand if you have 10 or so beers on tap, you don't want to have to repeat yourself multiple times, however they had 3 on tap, yes beer a, beer b, and beer c.

After throwing the menu, the bartender did not apologize, nor did he acknowledge what had just happened when I asked him to be a bit more polite, he just walked away. We did not get his attention again for at least 10 minutes, and did I mention the bar was not busy.

There were several other things that happened in the half hour we were there that were on a similar vain.

I don't think we will be returning. I have never written a bad review about a restaraunt on any website until now. I usually believe a place deserves a second, and sometimes a third chance. However in this case, the experience was so poor, I felt compelled to share.

Cons: Service, selection, attitude

I was going to write a review about Aura, but instead...

Honestly? I have been to a lot of bars and clubs downtown and I have had my fare share of problems, usually my own fault cause I've been drinking lol. On the other hand, some places have horrible management and customer service. I wasn't there pdxgrl, but are you seriously trying to place blame for you loosing your own stuff? You are an adult, at a bar, and drinking! Are you sure you weren't given your number, or what ever you get at the coat check? Or did you just drop it on the dance floor or leave it at your table? Seriously, what did you want management to do for you? Give me a break. Grow up and take responsibility for your own actions. Did you expect the manager to hold your hand and walk you home while they were busy babysitting hundreds of other drunks?

Pros: The food here is awesome!

Cons: A little pricey for what you get.

I went to Aura on 1/17/09 and I checked my bag and coat for $4. I was glad they had this service because who wants to worry about their items all night, right? Anyway, was having a pretty good time, the drinks are pricy, but well made. One time during the night, I went to check my cell phone that I had left with my items. I gave the girl my number and she handed me my items. I checked the phone and then gave her my things back. She did not give me my number and I did not think anything of it and went back out to dance. Apparently, someone else either mistakenly took or purposely took my number and later got kicked out. They gave the bouncer their numbers and were given my belongings which included but not limited to, license, cell phone, credit cards, mp3, keys, cash, etc...
I understand that it was my fault in part for not keeping track of my number, but what blew me away was the managers lack of compassion or caring. He basically told me I was SOL. I just having lost my house key, phone, cash and cards, and my coat on a freezing night, was upset that he did not care at all what was going to happen to me. Other than hail a cab he sent me off without writing down any information, without so much as offering to borrow a coat or pay my cab or anything. Luckily, I had a friend that was with me that helped me with the cab and gave me a place to stay, since my apartment was locked and I could not get in or call a locksmith because I had no phone, cash or cards. I would never recommend this place to anyone, based solely on the fact that if something bad was to happen to you the staff is not going to help you out one bit. Very cold, uncaring, all over bad customer service.

I emailed both managers at Aura and called to just check if my things were returned and if they could give me a description of the people that were given my belongings and I have not heard back. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Pros: I can't think of any, good drinks maybe?

Cons: terrible customer service

.

This place seems to attract an older crowd (30s). The music is hip or miss, if the music is miss when you walk in then it's pretty much that way for the rest of the night. There are younger people there just look for the skimpy dressed girls. Drinks are expensive compared to other clubs in Portland. Otherwise not a place for me, maybe when I'm a 30 year old bachelorette.

This is my first time posting a review, but just had to with my recent experience at Aura. I had the best time celebrating a milestone birthday! All of my friends agree that we couldn't have asked for better service, a great atmosphere, music and overall good time! We danced the night away and had great food and drinks to keep us going! From being greeted outside to our personal bartender, everything was perfect. I appreciate all that the staff did for us and we'll be sure to be back for future celebrations! Thanks to everyone and if you're thinking about using Aura for a celebration - book it in a heartbeat!

We recently had the most amazing 30th birthday party on a Saturday night at aura upstairs in the sky lounge for about 25 people. When we arrived the private curtain was pulled, there were beautiful vases filled with orchids and our champagne was chilled. The setting was gorgeous and we were treated like rock stars. It was like being in Vegas for a night right here in Portland. It was great being upstairs and watching all of the action below.l The DJ was great and we danced all night long. We will definitely be back!

I usually don't write reviews, but I recently attended a birthday party at Aura and I was so impressed by the experience that I had to write something! I was talking for days about the exceptional service and array of delicious food. The staff attended to everyone's needs, almost anticipating what was needed before anything was requested, sometimes hard to do with 50 plus guests. There was food for every palate and no one walked away hungry. The chocolate fondue was incredible - with marshmallows, fruit, cookies - simply decadent and delicious! The space really leant itself to accomodating the group - the ambiance is perfect for creating an atmosphere of urban hip and comfort. I highly recomend Aura for any type of event and will be back for Happy Hour and dinner. Aura = AWESOME!!!

This was my worst experience in a club ever! I had reservations at this club for my 25th birthday party for 20 people. You would think that if you had a party of 20+ people who are all ordering food and drinks, we would have been taken care of. Unfortunately, it was the extreme opposite! Our food was served cold, and our service was even colder. The staff was very unaccommodating and it seemed as if they forget that as a SERVER, you are suppose to "serve" your guests. Long story short, I will never return to this place again. My 25th birthday will be memorable, but for the wrong reasons. If you are thinking upon booking a party or just planning to attend this club, I suggest you keep looking...

I went to Aura last weekend, the only downer was we had to pay cover even though we were supposed to be on the VIP list. The music was good and the drinks weren't too expensive. Overall I liked the crowd and the music wasn't just straight rap which was nice for a change!

Ok, so they got rid of there great fondu platter with vegies...so, now you have to pay extra, and they also got rid of the sirloin tips that you used to be able to order with the fondu. Also we did not get any cotton candy at the end of our meal. It was also 1 1/2 hours from the time we ordered to the time we got our food...we were the fourth table in the joint with no one else...except the loud and annoying party going on upsatirs.I used to be a great surporter of the establishment...but now everytime we go in, they are more concerned about their bridal parties than their customers. I am always friendly to the staff, because I know what it is like to wait on people.

I am always friendly to the staff, because I know what it is like to wait on people.

bouncers were very rude. go go dancers need around 100 sit ups. i realize this is portland, but you can't even find 2 hot women in the whole city? ok, town, but still.

I went to aura in a group of eight on a Friday night for dinner.....BIG mistake. I was appalled at their complete lack of service and disregard for their customers, it was as if we weren't even there. It took over thirty minutes to get our drinks refiled after they had ran out. Six of us had to wait an hour and a half before getting our food, and the other two in my group got their food twenty minutes after everyone else had finished. The food was unimpressive and poorly presented. This entire place is just putting on a big elaborate show to attract customers, it might be cool (by Portland standards, sadly) on the inside, but underneath its just a bunch of garbage. To add insult to injury, so to speak, the seats were extremely uncomfortable. I found myself getting up surprisingly frequently to pay a visit to anything thats worth a damn in this entire place, the bathroom.

We were looking for something "romantic" with great quality. Saw Aura on Citysearch and remembered walking past it thinking, "this is damn interesting..." We had the Beatles Tribute show to go to so got to the restaurant at 5:00. With Happy Hour prices, we enjoyed a couple cool ones and the funky, contemporary setting. Even with it light out, the candles combined with the creative window coverings/booth dividers to create a nice, cozy and--yes--romantic atmosphere. I ordered mom's meatloaf with the caesar salad, she got the blackened chicken and the Aura House Green Salad. Judy gave both her salad and chicken with mash a 10--and she is THE food snob. I gave my salad a 10, but he meatloaf a 9--mostly because I'm not a big fan of soft tomato chunks in anything, let alone on top of meatloaf. Not beiing a food snob, I would prefer catsup.
But is was all gorgeously plated on unusual dinnerware. Our waiter was attentive and helpful but not a bother. The place mus be hopping when it's loaded later in the evening. There's a fab dance floor and a second level for diners. We'll have to come back to party.
Some people have written that the music sucked. We found it enormously enjoyable and mark it as one more benefit to the Aura aura.
We loved Aura and will return again. Recommend HIGHLY, especially if you're an early diner.

I wish that I would have visit Aura sooner, it is by far the best club in Portland! We walked into the place at 11pm and already the dance floor was packed and it only got busier as the night progressed. The Dj's were excellent and could actually mix instead of just letting the song play 'til the end. The variety of music was a refreshing change. I thought that the crowd and the staff would be stuck up but I was wrong. The place to be if you are looking for good music, strong drinks and classy people!

Neat look about the place, cool lights, couches, trendy crowd. Go for a VIP event, not just a night out to dance. I went on a Friday night, and the DJ was awful! The music was not danceable, it was too slow and when the crowd responded to each song with a groan, a boo or a thumbs-down, he didn't even look up to see it! Drinks are well-priced, and the bar is easily accessible.

I do not recommend this place for dinner, drinks nor dancing. The employees at the door on weekends are clueless, disorganized, unprofessional and immature. Inside the drinks are watered down and expensive for their quality. The food is subpar and service could be better. Save your money, time and energy and avoid this place.

Not a great place for a group and/or an intimate party. Staff was not well educated nor was it a pleasant experience. Food was not that great either. I would go into detail but it is not even worth my time. I would never go back.

I went here recently for my wife's birthday. I called them about a week and a half before and told them I would be bringing a group of about 20 people and if they could reserve an area for us. This they gladly did and it didn't cost anything to reserve it. When I got there I was thrilled to find an upstairs location set aside for just our party overlooking the dance floor. not only that but we had an attentive server (waitress? drink runner?) who brought us our drinks so we didn't have to wait in line at the bar. Not only this but there was a triple pyramid platter of fried shrimp and cocktail sauce waiting for us when we got there... free! They had a cover charge that night but everyone on our guest list didn't have to pay cover... how cool is that. my wife had a great time, and everyone enjoyed the dancing and the music which was basically chart toping hip hop remixes, so everyone can get into it. I was told it was a slow night when we went but we didn't mind because we all had plenty of room to dance if we felt like it or lounge upstairs with a drink. It was a great great experience and they made me look really good because I suposedly "organized" it. I didn't really do anything but make reservations and invite people. highly recommended

Pros: Fun, good service, great environment, good dancing

I have gone on two different occasions. One was for a Beach Party, the other was a random Friday night. The special party was no too popular and the crowd was sparse. The strange thing is that I went on a "non occasion" Friday and had a great time with a great and fun crowd. Typical overpriced drinks and some girls with way too much attitude, but overall had a blast with my friends.

When a small group of us went to this lounge we were greated average. However, when our waiter came to our table....the service really began. The food was great! The service was amazingly great! Also, our water and drinks were never empty. The music made you feel good and the ambience was superb.

I like Aura's atmosphere and staff, but I have never enjoyed myself there. Mainly due to the fact that it seems to attract a really stuck up crowd....I feel like everyone is rude or just out to impress eachother.

PROS: Very modern atmosphere. Good Staff!

I took my sister there for her 21st birthday. It was a little quieter because it was 1. a Wednesday night, and 2. Past 9pm. The guy at the door was friendly (once we got in--the door is a little weird LOL). We seated ourselves amid some great contemporary jazz, and we were soon greeted by a very sweet waitress. Upon finding that it was my sister's 21st, she did everything to make it a special night for her! The food was great, but a little spendy for the quantity. The atmosphere, very trendy! Wonderful experience, will go there again!

We decided on eating and dancing at Aura for a birthday celebration despite the reviews found here at Citysearch. We were greatly rewarded. The food was high quality and unique. We ordered a few appetizers for our group and ended up being so full that we didn't order dinner. The service was a little slow, especially after 9 pm. The atmosphere was amazing and the music wonderfully dance-able. I hope to go again soon. HAVE TO SEE THE RESTROOMS & SMOKING LOUNGE.

I like this place. Most places advertising themselves as trendy think "trendy" means having crap service and a pretentious staff. Aura seems above that.

Their clientele is still pretty high-end, but it is a much more relaxed environment. The staff is friendly and fairly quick. I have never been stopped at the door due to overcrowding, and I've never seen it totally packed. All in all, I'd recommend this place to just about anyone, and it caters to all kinds of people.

As it relates to the food, which seems to be panned by most people writing reviews, I've never tried it. If it is as bad as people seem to think, skip the eating and go for the drinks.

I was at Aura for the first time last weekend and what a great time. Friday was their "Beach Party" great time. The women were beatiful and the drinks were perfect. The two Bartenders I dealt with were two of the best I have ever had, their names were Eric and Abby. Abby was adorable and very friendly. Eric was great also if I could get through the women standing around trying to get his attention. Probably the best thing was how I was treated by the Manager, I think her name was Jill. I had an issue with my credit card and she was very helful and courtious with helping me resolve it. Overall Aura is the best night club in Portland.

Went w/friends on a Saturday. Had a decent enough time. Atmosphere is cool in terms of how it looks, inside. SOMEWHAT on the upscale looking side. (Considering Portland DOESN'T have many cool places) Aura's upper level bar: great for ordering cocktails. (downstairs bar crowded at times). Dancefloor music I DIDN'T like though. (but if you're into hip-hop/pop/top 40's, then this is the place for you!) Ordered a few appetizers I DON'T recommened ordering: Spinach Dip was VERY bland, boring in flavor. The Hummus dip w/Pita bread equally the same. Hummus tasted like your basic Frito's bean dip, Pita bread WAY to salty. Chef needs to chill out on the salt a little. Aura's food suprised me, I expected BETTER. Anyway to make a long story short if you haven't been yet give it a try, it's worth a try. Just don't order the food items I mentioned here.

First of all its one of only 2 non smoking clubs I know of...which is wonderful. The club is beautiful, and while it may be hard to get the wait staff to your table after 10, if you walk up to any of the 3 bars you get served quickly esp. if a bartender named Ryan is behind it. I do have to say they used to be stricter on the dress code but this is a place where you can show up dressed in jeans and a nice shirt or top, or go NY club dress style, black slacks and more formal top and still fit in just fine.

~30 friends came to hear our favoite artist Patrick Lamb as Auras website. The absurdity began with Happy Hour. The "mini-burger" was a joke..it's the size of half-dollar for $3.00. Then, biting into it, it was white..beef should be brownish. Servers answeroh its chicken"oh well." Drink was a Lemon-Drop..really mostly Sugar-Drop. Maybe they are cutting costs! The group was moved to couch area with the movable partitions between. Asked if they could open the partions...was told "no...we will open them when the music starts." Almost all of the appetizer orders were late and misdelivered. Fondue orders, dropped on whatever table were dead cold when finally found. When the customer mentioned that fondue looses something when cold the answers was "we'll stick it in a micro."
THEN, when the band started we asked, "where is Patrick..."Oh...he WONT be coming, we substituted this other band.
Well we won't be coming back either.

I was visiting from Montreal, Canada, and decided to go to Aura on a Saturday nite. The food was Ok - a bit pricy - but that's expected. The portions were good and tasty. But at 10:30 pm or so the DJ started to spin and people started to dance.. BAD music. BAD BAD really OLD music. people are dressed casual - no dress code. there were ppl with sneakers and baseball hats... I would not go there but this is rated high by Portlanders! go figure!

Their Cilitini has highly addictive qualities to it, and you can special order it with Petron for a totally different twist. The dancing and atmosphere is great and not too edgy, too snobby, too anything...good balance of people. It's hard to leave, but when you do, you won't smell like smoke because it's nonsmoking. A great club!

Aura makes a difference in PDX's night life. It feels good to see that someone has a better idea of how a club should be like.
Pablo, we've been there Friday, Sept. 10th '04. You know who you are and who I am, so please give me a sign, "blue eyes."

This place is a gamble, as demonstrated by the severe contradictions between reviews. The first time I went there early, 6pm, and had a decent dinner of mini-burgers with wierd fried sweet potato fries. (weird because they were like shoestring potatoes from a can) The cocktail was good but pricey. The service was helpful.
The second time I went later and the place was packed with dancers, diners and drinkers. We were forgotten/ignored by the waitress twice. The food was lukewarm and mediocre (shrimp skewers overdone, rice tasteless). The atmosphere is sheek/industrial but can be a meatmarket on Sat nights.

Stunning food (seriously, I was shocked at the excellent execution of the menu) in a very sexy atmosphere. Upscale NYC-esque vibe, circa 1995--nonetheless, it's still ahead of it's time for Portland.

The crowd ranged from young professionals to labelwhore types, on-the-prowl suits, and couples just out to chat and enjoy the mileu.

Menu: try the hazelnut encrusted halibut--flaky and perfectly breaded, served with some of the best garlic mashers ever. Grilled mango w/ wasabe icecream is tart, sweet, spicy and goes down so easily.

Love that the check comes with a cone of cotton candy. Shows that the ownership has a quirky sense of humor, even if some of the see-and-be-seen clientele/staff may not.

My husband has been raving about this place since he first tried it on one of his many business trips a few months ago. When I was finally able to accompany him this last trip, I insisted we try his "new favorite spot". Well, I can say that after 20 years of marriage, we still agree on a few things. The ambience is "to die for", as this site lists, but the food, wine and service were all impeccable. The server remembered my husband from his previous visits, but was able to adjust her service from business to a more formal, "couples" style. As my husband and I are well traveled business diners, we are always excited when a restaurant provides pleasant service and excellent food as well. I loved every bit of my experience there, and will be traveling with my husband to Portland more often.
