Under-whelming, slow service, pricey. I took my honey to Gravitas for his birthday, having heard it was a posh restaurant experience. 7:30 Reservations on Saturday, sold out of prawns from cold bar but found 3 for us in the back. Service was so slow and the waitress wasn??t clear on the menu constantly returning to answer our questions. Caesar salad was basic. Overpriced scallops: Huge plate with 3 large/1 medium scallop over a dollop of something. It was soo oversalted, we sent it back. Next we tried the special which was a small fillet over spinach and everything was doused with sauce. What were they trying to hide. Overcooked for rare. We asked for their bread from their own bakery, sold out. Waitress scrounged for us, dry stale rolls and bread chips from yesterdays leftovers. My honey was a professor at UH school of Restaurant and Hotel Mngmt. He told everyone the experience was ??Under-Whelming?. I was embarassed . Too many great restaurants to waste my time again.

Gravitas for me has been hit or miss as far as service. However the food has always been top notch. Even though it??s a little pricey for what you get, I still keep coming back. They have a great wine list with a good variety of selections. There is also a private room upstairs which is hard to find at many places. Keep a lookout on their website for different events held each month. One I attended was chick flick night where for one price you get a meal along with a movie, usually a romantic comedy like Sleepless in Seattle.

With an edgy, yet upscale underground vibe, Gravitas reminds me of one of my favorite Tom Douglas restaurants in Seattle: cool, warehouse, hip. The exposed brick and the large chalkboard serve as a backdrop to a warm eating scene. Good looking twenties to forties-somethings imbibing on cocktails or wine, enjoying the delicious creations of Chef Tycer.
As with any restaurant boasting a renowned Chef, the food quality increases exponentially when the Chef is in the house. Under the guidance of said Chef, a dish as simple as caesar salad becomes a sensory adventure and an exercise in true culinary artistry. One large romaine leaf, seasoned to perfection, perfectly crisped and fresh, with just the right amount of dressing and fresh parmesan sent my senses reeling on the first bite. The gnocchi, a simple dish with portabello and tomato, and one of the best bargains on the menu, sets an example for all wanna-be italian restaurants in Houston - do it right and the results will be astonishing. I like the meat dishes and enjoyed the steak frites and boeuf bourgignon on the occasions that I've had it. I like to entertain here because the meal is always exceptional. If you haven't tried it, don't hesitate. Gravitas does a great job on delivering both ambience and food!

Loving this place! Hands down best pork chop in Houston as well the salmon tar-tar. Great drinks. Friendly staff. Posh atmosphere. Accomodating to any request i have ever asked for. Great for private parties. My favorite server there is a guy named AJ (quick, competent, and knowledgeable). I always ask for him.

I just wanted to throw out a few thoughts about my new favorite place to eat and socialize. Gravitas is a super kool bistro to eat, chill, drink and relax with your friends and family. The staff become your friends and always welcome your next visit. The moment you walk in the door the energy that surrounds you is comfortable and inviting, not to mention the aromas wafting through from the open air kitchen. Chef Fidel and his crew prepare every meal with the utmost professionalism and will not send out anything less than perfect in Chef Fidel's eyes. The food is delicious and the servers are some of the best I have witnessed in a long time. Mark, the General Manager is always there and willing to assist with any of your needs and is also one of the nicest people I have encountered in a long time. If you havn't visited Gravitas yet, Please, By All Means Get Yourself There and meet the staff and have a great time...You owe it to yourself to have a great dining experience! Bon Appetito.

Took my staff into Gravitas last week for our Christmas Party. The place was empty and there were a couple of people in the bar area. The staff told me I could not sit in or near the bar because someone rented it. Although there were only a couple of couples there. The staff was so rude! If you are looking for a great dinner hit Vencent's a few blocks up the road from Gravitas. Their staff is great and you can sit where you want!

I went to Gravitas by suggestion of some friends of mine. The waiter, although very nice, did not come around very much. We had a few food allergies that we described at length and watched him diligently writing them down. AFter too long of a wait between apps, then salad, then entree, we were disappointed to notice that the allergy info had not been communicated! We then had to wait another twenty more minutes to be served! All in all we stayed there for three hours, and not just because of the wonderful conversation. Lamb was extremely fatty, but the smashed potatoes, fish, salads, and bread pudding were fantastic. Just needs some tightening up in the management dept, i think... More organization, but the food was relatively wonderful.

The selection of wine can be overwhelming, but be patient my friend, the staff will help you with that. The food is wonderful. Spanish twist on what you would never expect. The bread and dippings are just a preview of the wonderful things that are to follow.

Wanted to share my thoughts on a wonderful dinner this past weekend and here I find THAT guy. More on that later. I first dined at Gravitas for Yelp week with friends and wanted to bring my husband. The restaurant was almost full when I first came and very loud. We came in late to avoid the noise. We started with cocktails in the bar that the very pleasant bartender recommended. I was boring and went for the pomegranate martini which was very good. My husband had a very pretty mixed gin drink, the name I can't remember. It wasn't bad, but was a little too unusual for me. Once we were finished we were seated in the dining room. Our waiter immediately sold us on a simple tuna sashimi dish with a unique wasabi sauce that made the dish, beautiful tuna or not. I talked my husband into sharing their bistro steak. When it arrived the waiter brought out two dishes each with a sizable portion of steak. I told him that we only wanted to share one. He then patiently explained to me that the chef had separated the dish for us and that it was one steak with some extra frites for each of us. Very glad we were sharing. We could have invited a third for dinner and still had something to take home. After devouring the steak we decided to go ahead and share a dessert as well fearing another colossal serving. The dessert was actually a very petite, modern looking chocolate mousse. It was more than enough. However, the highlight of the evening was a delicious bottle of Prima Voce Italian red. We ordered it by accident, well if you can do that. Throughout most of the evening there was a belligerent little man trying to impress his date a few tables over from us. Middle age, overweight, and with a receding hairline he was doing his best to show off by tormenting a poor waitress (sorry if I'm being cruel, but I was a waitress once too and some people's behavior is simply inexcusable). We had already settled for a couple glasses of unremarkable shiraz, but towards the end of our meal this man got up and started stumbling drunkenly towards the kitchen shouting something unintelligibly. He shoved the bottle in his poor waitresses face and stumbled back to his table. When I asked our waiter what was going on he told us that he, duh, didn't like his wine. Even though we were nearly done with our meal we thought we'd order a bottle just to see. It was a truly amazing tuscan. We had a couple more glasses and our server packed it up for us to finish at home. Thank you for the unintentional recommendation sir. Next time try class. Its never failed to impress a girl that I'm aware of. Overall this is one of the better meals I've had since Moving to Houston. I would definitely recommend coming when its not busy as the restaurant can get a little tight and extremely loud.

I visited Gravitas Last night! The sewer smell at the front door was a plumbing pipe leaking off the front eve. That's when I should have turned around and left. The place was kinda empty. We sat down got the wine list, and to my surprise, I gotta say this is the worst I have seen in Houston! I like all kinds of wine, especially imports (not so much Australian) How ever i didn't recognize much of what was on the list. The server was totally recommending this Tempranillo not from Spain but from Australia. The wine sucked! I sent it back. The next wine they brought had temperature or storage issues. Sent it back too.(drank water) Next we had the Venison Chili I got a little indigestion. Then we ordered the Veal, (not so bad) However they forgot the order on gnochii , the server argued with me that I never ordered it! Maybe she saved me more heartburn, and $$$! So we had to try desert, since the experience was already a train wreck! Desert was great! Bread pudding is all I can recommend! Never Going Back to this DUMP!

I was a little concerned when I read the Citysearch reviews about Gravitas but since they were a little out of date, I went in with an open mind. The restaurant was very quiet, the service was great and the food was even better! Two in our party had the flat iron steak, another had the hanger steak and my husband had the veal cordon bleu. Everyone loved their food and cleared their plate! The Bread Pudding was out of the world too! I highly recommend this restaurant for a nice night out.

Wow! So many bad reviews. I've been three times and had great luck. Twice eating off the regular menu. (Love the mussles). And once for a corporate event where we ate off a seperate menu. Also the staff was very friendly. I must have great luck.

Overall, the experience was disappointing . The service, ambiance and food were all so-so. The service and ambiance were less than what one would expect when compared to other restaurants in the same price range, such as Mark's, Mockingbird Bistro, McCormick and Schmick's, etc. We tried Gravitas during Houston Restaurant Week. When we were presented with the menus, we were a little surprised that we were not provided with the Restaurant Week menus and were asked whether we noted this on our reservations, which made their participation in this charitable event almost seem like an afterthought. We also had to ask for the bread basket several times before the waiter bothered to bring it. The ambiance was flat and unmemorable.
The food was fair. I ordered the calamari cucumber salad, trout with risotto and marshmallow chocolate tart. The menu sounded fun and different, but, unfortunately, the execution was poor. The salad was unevenly seasoned such that while one bite may seem rather salty, the next was a little bland. In addition, the calamari was cold and stale. As for the trout and risotto, the trout was perfectly seared, but the taste was destroyed by the overly salty cheese risotto and watery vegetable. The marshmallow chocolate tart was rich and tasty, but the tart shell was stale and tasted old.

I went to Gravitas for my third visit. I love the atmosphere and I really enjoyed the food. The steak and salmon tartars and pork chop dish were delicious. The hangar steak was too. I would love to review the dessert as well, but our waiter was too slow to bring it out before we had to leave - even though we asked him when we ordered dessert to please bring it out quickly along with the check b/c we had to leave soon. It was a slow night without many other tables and he managed to chat and hang out with his co-workers for the next 25 minutes without checking for the dessert and while avoiding my attempt to catch his eye to see the status. This was after an evening of spectacularly slow service (i think it took him about 30 minutes to come ask us about appetizers after we were served our water and wine). Only go if you want a very long evening with good food and bad service.

Other reviews here had me worried before I decided to give it a try for brunch yesterday. Well, it was extremely enjoyable and the food was tasty. The service was excellent; our server's name was Zac and he was attentive as is appropriate; not overbearing but we weren't waiting on anything. He had it down and was very likeable and had a zip to his demeanor. I can't stand when servers are overbearing or when they look like they are at a funeral. Zac was perfect. Food was extremely good also. I tried the omelette on the brunch menu and my Boyfriend had a special off the menu salmon and dill eggs benedict. We were both extremely pleased with our choices. We also enjoyed our mimosas and it was the perfect portions for us. We did not leave hungry nor did we leave there and need a nap. This was my first visit and will not be my last. I intend on trying it for dinner soon also but they have a frequenter for their brunch in me now.

Cons: Drinks are a bit pricier than some other comparable area choices

Besides a very rude/mannerless bartender...
The food was the absolute worse I've ever had. I would feel better about spending fifty dollars on Whataburger than ever eating at this restaurant again. I tried everyone's dishes, and the same. However, mine, The Roasted Chicken, was especially awful. The au jus the chicken was served with (and soaked into every other part of the dish) had a pungent, stinch aftertaste that made it hard to hold down any food I ate.

After reading the reviews, we were hesitant to visit this restaurant but because neighbors had recommended it, we decided to try it.

As other reviewers mentioned, it has a very limited menu. We took one reviewers advice and tried the cheese plate for our appetizer. It was very tasty, but the cheese portions (you get to choose 3 types of cheese) were very small. It is served with date bread, pear jam, and candied pecans. This would make a better dessert because of sweetness of everything.

Our server recommended the smoked pork chop and the beef bourginon (their specialty according to server). The cost was $24 and $26 respectively. The beef was very bland and had an odd flavor. The pork chop was chewy and still quite pink in some areas, so I was hesitant to eat much of it.

I don't recommend this restaurant at all. Our bill for 2 people was over $100 (included 2 glasses of wine), which would have been easier to take had the food been good.

We will not be back.

The wine list is extensive and nicely priced. They have "by the glass" and "half bottles". The food menu is limited compared to other places but four of us ordered different entrees and they were all delicious. As an appetizer I would recommend the cheese plate. The staff is very attentive and caring. I will definitely be going back.

The place was empty on a Saturday night. We were there for a birthday celebration and there were probably 4 people there who were not part of our party. The DJ was lame. We tried to get him to play songs that would liven up the place, but he said he wasn't feeling the crowd. Come on! The music kept cutting out, too, sometimes for 30 seconds at a time, especially between songs. Just awful.

The host/manager (not sure what his title was), however, was wonderful. I knew the kitchen was closed, but was hoping to get some sort of dessert for the birthday girl and he made it happen! And it was complimentary, too!

The drinks were also fabulous, at around $11 for your basic cocktail, it was moderately priced. However, the beers were really expensive at $7 a pop for Shiner.

My wife and I love Gravitas. The food is always dependable and is based on seasonal produce, which a lot of other restaurants don't even attempt. We recently dined there and I enjoyed one of the best Texas quails I've ever had and my wife had an exceptional lamb chop main. The service is unpretentious and fits with the whole ambience of the place. Very cosy, friendly and dependable. Not somewhere I'd go for an important busines dinner but my first choice location when dning wiht a group of friends or with my wife.

Always ask for the specials and what is seasonal - we rarely choose straight off the menu eand we have rarely (never) been disappointed. Jason is an exceptional chef has done amazing things with the place and the menu. Keep it up and we'll keep coming back.

Pros: Great food in a casual setting

The last time our group of 7 were at Gravitas for what used to be our traditional Sunday brunch we swore it would be the final time if we had any problems. Considering we had bad service and often poorly prepared food the previous 5 times we went, we had an idea what to expect. We'll order anything from the delicious pancakes (used to be $6.50, now $8.00) to more expensive meat and fish dishes ($18 and up).

This last time we went (and I do mean LAST), fruit on our french toast and pancake plates were going bad and had fungus! The poached egg on our Eggs Benedict were fully cooked (what's the point of that?). The quiche lacked any bacon (a key ingredient noted on the menu). No apologies from the waitstaff after we complained. No visit from the manager or apology from the chef, even after we told them this one of many times we had this type of experience.

Previous times, we had wrong orders come out, cold toast, chicken that was uncooked, then recooked, and STILL uncooked, and numerous issues with arrogant or rude waitstaff. Mind you, we gave this place chance after chance, because honestly, we used to love the food. We always went in parties of six to twelve. So, in spite of our consistent patronage, obviously Gravitas' management doesn't care about pleasing repeat customers. Our table was even insulted by a waitress once!

It's a shame because it once was a great restaurant. Their management has changed, so has some of the waitstaff, and I really wonder what is happening in the kitchen. I wouldn't complain this much publicly, but considering the price of the food (most items are about $1.50 more expensive), we should NEVER be served moldy berries (literally going bad) and uncooked chicken. And any restaurant that prides itself on preparation would not served hard eggs on eggs benedict, when they should be poached and oozing when you cut into them.

Gravitas does not care about its reputation even more than it does not care about your experience. Sorry.

Pros: Good food if they prepare it correctly

Cons: Bad service, and always some poorly prepared food; going downhill

Bottom line, the food was good, the waiter was green and had to be reminded often. The waiter messed up our check but after some considerable effort on my part to rectify the situation it was resolved. Would go again but I hope the performance doesn't repeat itself.

Not somewhere to go more than one time, if ever. Service is absolutely terrible. Food is descent but extremely over priced. Unless you want to stand around all night and wait for the lazy staff to get around to doing anything you are better off spending your money some place else.

We had a drink in the bar before dinner. Despite there only being 6 customers at the bar, it still took the barman 15 minutes to serve us. When I paid for the drinks, I didn?t even get offered any change, he just assumed it was all a tip.
Hoping for a better meal.... but no, the same level of service. I had the lamb dish which is served with croutons (fried bread chunks). These were stone cold and had obviously been taken straight from the fridge. Having returned the dish to be redone, it came back with all the salad missing, at which point I gave up.
When the bill came, it already had 18% added for service. Considering the terrible job they did, we reduced this to 10%. Imagine my surprise to see on my credit card bill they had charged the whole amount. Despite calling to point this out, and being promised it would be rectified, it hasn?t been done. Not only are they incompetent at what they do, they are also dishonest. Needless to say I will never return.

Cons: Expensive, terrible management, the food

Let me say that my second visit to Gravitas was really disappointing. The first time I had pasta and a cheese plate appetizer. It was really tasty and the service was great! They probably have some of the best steak fries I've eaten, but hard to rate a restaurant on fries. The second time I had their gnocchi and I was really a bit disturbed. It was awkward potatoes at best. Trying to overlook that, the waiter apparently thought it would be a good idea for his family to be eating at the table next to our. So in between him kissing his kids and socializing with his family, we got glanced at, but no service. After about 15 minutes, we waived another waitress over and when the incompetent waiter returned; informed him he had been replaced. I will likely not return to Gravitas in the near future, but it is a nice restaurant.

I took two of my friends who were out of town to Gravitas on Friday. My friends ordered the chicken fried steak and some pasta dish, and I ordered the gnochi. The gnochi was extremely good. From the way it looked and tasted, you can tell it was freshly made. The sauce was very light and tastty, not overpowering like most pasta sauces. I think the portions were just right. I tried my friends chicken fried steak which was really good. I was told from the waiter that they use rib eye. I also liked the ambiance. The lights were dimmed just enough, music coming from the speakers up top and a very cool crowd. I think it's a great spot for a date or small group getting a bite to eat before heading out. Overall, i would suggest it to anyone who i s looking for a cool spot that is not too crowdy. There's also a bar/lounge that is connected to restaurant, that we didn't get a chance to try out, but it's a good alternative for after dinner.

Just went there on girl's night out. One in our party of 3 loved it. She had the bisque and gnocci. She loved both. I also loved the Calamari salad with cucumbers - but the chicken pasta was bland. The service started off great - but really slowed down. Nice enough - but just didn't come back and slow to get drinks. Atmosphere ok- we were expecting a bit more elegance. Sidebar is nice outside - but inside VERY smokey and stale. Kind of a dull crowd too. Been there and done it - won't go back.

So I read the reviews on here way more than I write them. I don't let bad reviews prevent me from trying places out but I was a little nervous about going to Gravitas per some notes below. Now I am positive it is worth drawing your own conclusions. Everything was fabulous! We stuffed our faces on everything: gnocchi, gazpacho, cheese, veal,...the list goes on and we were oh so happy! The service was lovely, quirky, but lovely and attentive. The place has a real urban feel...kind of NYC like. So, I say definitely check it out. If you like it great, if not at least you tried! No need to claim to be 'the best critic' (like the review I just read where the 4 other places the guy's reviewed are cheap, terrible barbecue joints). Oh, also with the bread (fresh from a bakery they own - cool!) comes this really awesome nut/seed mix thing with olive oil for dipping - way better than butter and probably a little healthier (not that it mattered after everything else we ate :) ).

Cons: Parking, a little loud

First let me say, my wife and I eat in gourmet restaurants global on a regular basis (business and personal travel) so we're not rookies at this. What a disappointment, after great anticipation and high expectations I had the biggest letdown in Houston dining history. Another one of those ?trendy places? with NO substance. We tried several dishes. The pepper bisque was completely tasteless, open a can of Campbells for god's sake. Oh yeah, it was room temperature when served. The pancetta (it was actually thin bacon..NOT pancett) was the only flavor in the radicchio salad, another big disappointment, lacked the blue cheese which was to be included. Next was the gnocchi, HORRIBLE, it was tubular potato pancakes at best, mushrooms, and spinach without any seasoning. The steak frite was the only thing worth eating; it kept the evening from being a total waste. In depth wine list, but the prices are waaay out of line. Service was good, the waitress really tried hard, but she alone couldn't over come the tasteless food. Oh yeah, it was my wife?s birthday. Don?t waste your time. For your time (forget the money) try Benjy's, Mark's, or Ruggles for some real flavor.

We always have a great dinner when dinning at Gravitas. It is convenient and consistently good. I think the layout was well thought out in a way that it feels private and not over crowded. The food selection is wonderful. The open kitchen is a nice touch (always nice to see who is preparing your food). You will not be disappointed with Gravitas for any occasion.

Our waiter was busy, so I got another one to help out, and he was very willing to take our order and help our waiter bring out the plates, so I never really thought the service wasn't up to par. Very fresh bread. I don't recommend the veal cordone bleu, it tasted like breaded spoiled ham. I sampled my friend's beef bourguinon...simply delicious; the beef was tender and the sauce just sweet enough. I had gnocchi on the side, but I tell you, I could make an entire meal of it. You get fairly big portions for the price, so it's definitely a value coming here. The ambience is super cozy. You really can walk up from the street and just come join all the diners. Everyone is really friendly, including the valet. And if you'd like to just lounge, there's a bar area too with chairs and music.

Reservation recommended especially on weekends.

We had a table for 6 and were very impressed with the service. As far as the food went, we were impressed with the beet salad, Yellow Fin Carpaccio, mussels and market catch but were less than impressed with the steak and the Spatzle. In general the beer and wine selection was good and even though the food was a little inconsistent we enjoyed dinner and will be going back.

Warning, it is a very loud restaurant.

I live a few blocks from Gravitas and have drinks there often. I have dined here with friends and my husband. The food is very good although slightly over priced in my opinion. Their soups and salads are amazing and worth every penny. There cheese plate is perfectly paired with spreads and nuts. And the beef dishes are well done and cooked excellently. I would absolutely recommed this to a friend or a couple.

I adore cheese and thankfully Gravitas has a great cheese selection. There are some great wines to choose from also. Our server let us know that we could even come in and have the cheese plate in the bar or after the dining room closes - perfect for those late night cravings I get!

I was really happy to find this restaurant. We get stuck at places like Mark's and Vic & Anthony's all the time for business so Gravitas was truly refreshing. There is nothing stuffy about it and the food and decor reminds me of being in New York. It was a bit loud while we were there but it was really busy. I think that is a good sign. I will definitely be returning and dragging all my business associates with me!

Everytime I go to Gravitas the food is amazing. It can get really loud inside, and the service can be a little sketchy at times, but the food totally makes up for it. They also have a really awesome bar with a patio that is a lot quieter than the restuarant and a really fun place to hang out for a little bit before sitting down to eat. I love this place and I would totally recommend checking it out.

We just happened by this place one afternoon while looking fot the original Antone's location. What a treat is was to find this gem. Our group (10 people) made reservations for the following Saturday. First let me start by saying that we had no trouble with a large party and were not given any restrictions for seating at a certain time. Our reservations was confirmed by phone and that was the start of a wonderful evening. Two members of our party had special dietary needs that were met very graciously and without hesitation. The wine list is extensive and even the wine snob in our group was impressed. It's nice to know there are still restaurants that make fresh pasta. The waiter suggested someone order mussels and they were outstanding! Even the french fries were delicious (they are fresh made in the restaurant). This was one of the best times our group has ever had dining out, from the very knowledgeable waitstaff to the great wine selection to the excellent menu selection. Kudos to you Gravitas

We have had several great dinners here so decided to try lunch. The server looked like an extra from Star Trek The Lost Generation with both ears pierced, a geometric shaved face, and the worst excuse for a Mo-Hawk we had ever seen. They only have one sparkling wine by the glass and it's not good. When we asked (special orders I know) if they could serve the potato salad appetizer from the dinner menu the server looked at us like WE had three heads. Then after asking the kitchen remembered the dish and got us an extremely generous portion. The music I believe was the soundtrack from Moody Gardens Aquarium and too loud; we asked if it could be turned down and the alien explained that request usually comes from guests seated directly under the speakers (which I assume we weren't) but he would oblige anyway. The entrees were overcooked and underwhelming (especially the seamingly boiled half chicken). We might try dinner again but not too soon.

Pros: Wine Selection

It seems as if the owner of the former Aries is now simply trying to appeal to the masses. If your looking for a cool place to eat with little substance, you've found it. While not as bad as his other restaurant Pic, this place is impressive aesthetically but again, more style than substance. Go on the weekend to enjoy the scene, not the food.
