When we have out of town guests, the best place to take them to orient them to Pittsburgh is on the Monongahela incline. They really like how it goes right up the mountain on a railroad like train with the difference being, of course, the angle it climbs UP! Be sure to get the front seat if possible for best viewing. No matter how many times I ride the incline, I'm still absolutely fascinted by how it works.

I think I went to the Incline for the first time as a chi8ld on a school field trip and loved it. I have been back many times since. Some people do actually take the incline to get up and down Mt. Washington for work and such but it is such a great attraction to take out of town visitors too. There aren't a ton of these left in the US so it is something special. Don't forget to take the kids who will get a kick out of the experience.

The Monongahela incline is one of two inclines in Pittsburgh. It is conveniently located near Station Square. The incline is used by both locals for basic transportation needs, and also for tourists that have never seen an incline and want to take in the nice views. This incline does not have a gift shop like the Duquesne incline, but it has an advantage of being right next to Station Square which has restaraunts and shops.

PROS: Next to Station Square
CONS: You can park at Station Square, but you have to pay to park

The Monongahela Incline is the oldest and steepest incline in the United States. Built in 1869, it has been in continuous passenger operation ever since. Of the 17 inclines that once existed in Pittsburgh, this is one of only 2 that are left (the Duquesne Incline is the other one). If you've never ridden an incline, it is a unique experience. Both children and adults will find it amazing.
