i always find a lot of toys for my son in this store. he is seven now and has autism. what i like about this store is one of the checkers has a grown son with autism and understood about my son removing the tags from the items. she has never refused to sell me anything because she understands his issues. told the other staff about my son and they understand when they see me and he is throwing fit to be sympathetic and patient. have never had a bad experience there.

I have shopped many of the thrift stores in Pasadena/Deer Park. Yes, I will admit there are some better than Alamo, and I do agree they need more English speaking associates, but when you think about what type of store you are in, what do you expect of the merchandise. You can't expect to find "this seasons" styles, hello it is a thrift store not Macy's or Sears. Good grief people, if you don't like the store don't go there. I love going there for clothes mostly. I have found many, many good deals. In today's economy I am just glad there are such places as this and the stigma of shopping at a thrift store is gone now it is "trendy" to do so.

First off: Jeanna M, I live in that neighborhood and I take offense to your comment about it, please go back to River Oaks or whatever other festering hive of overprivileged folk you crawled out of. Clearly you can afford to shop somewhere else, so please go do so and leave the thrift stores to the people who actually need to save some money.

That said: Alamo is the first thrift store I check when I need something good and cheap, when I need a costume or parts thereof, or when I need bags of wee toys or other doodads to use in various art and craft projects. Maybe delicate souls like Jeanna were there on a bad day, I don't know, but the store has always seemed perfectly clean to me. Cluttered, maybe, but clutter is not dirt and some people would do well to learn the difference.

Pricewise, they can be a little high on some things, but they're mostly very reasonable.

I shop here every Sunday. They do a weekly promotion where they slash usually 3 tags by 50%. You have to make it a habit to go every other week or so just to catch a different colored tag on that particular week. But I love it. I have found so many great pieces since going. I frequently thrift shop. But Alamo is my favorite by far. On a recent trip I found the cutest spring dress from designer line J CREW for $9.98 but it was a Pink (P) Blue (B) Yellow (Y) day. So I ended up getting the dress for $4.99!!!! What a steal. I'm so excited to save money. I don't care who knows I shop at thrift stores....because while they laughing at me I'm rolling in dough for less. Dressing for Less!

I have been to this place several times over the past few years. The staff is friendly, there is plenty of parking, and it is just fun to look around. The book collection on the back wall is the best thing of all. At just around $2 for hardbacks that sold new for $25+ it is hard to beat. I never bought clothes but are a lot of them. The electronics are outdated but fun to look at. This store is worth the drive to Pasadena if you live in Houston. You will find fun stuff for under $5.

The overall store is okay. You can always find a good deal. The store needs to be cleaned more. It always seems to have a not so clean feeling about it. The stuffed animal dept. is a joke. The employees need to be more helpful. More English speaking employees would be nice. More baskets are needed. Mirrors in the dressing room would be nice. It is inappropriate to have to step out to look at a mirror in front of everybody else in the store. Some of the items in the outside area should be thrown away. Come on, if it's broken, trash it.

Alamao has come a long way from the store it used to be. It used to hardly have anything and the parking lot was full of potholes.

Now there is a better variety. Granted some things are outdated and hardly worthy of buying, but what can one really expect from a thrift store? It's stuff that people no longer wanted and put away there. For that alone it surprises me what a good deal and what a selection we do really have.

I've been able to buy different clothes there in my size since that itself has grown. Books I usually get and purses I've begun to purchase. I've even found computer related stuff too such as a printer, keyboard, and a mouse that have worked.

So granted. It's not a perfect placeand there may very well be better places, but for the location and for what it has. It really is worth a visit.

Plus, isn't it just fun walking around in a thrift store in general? I know I love it. You never can really tell what you may find.

I've been to most thrift stores in Houston searching for vinyl records/45's/reel tapes/sheet music & instruments.
this one writes the price on every record with a grease pencil, which ruins any cover that might be collectible. It's always $2.92 for some reason. Occasionally they'll mark that out after awhile & write $1.92......Thanks! The only way I can buy anything is if it happens to have the shrink wrap still on, & they wrote on the shrink wrap, which I can remove when I get home. There's no way to remove grease pencil with out damaging the cover. I've talked to the manager to no avail....why can't they post a sign w/the prices? for a bunch of beat up albums, crammed into a magazine rack, $.50 to $.75 would be about right. So I avoid this store unless I'm really desperate for the abuse. that means they don't get me in the door for books/bicycles/tools/clothes or furniture very often either.

PROS: Big store................. wide aisles?
CONS: overpriced albums, hard to thumb thru in mag racks, ruined covers

This is an okay thrift store. It's a bit run down and not that clean but it's ok. You can't expect too much. This thirft store probably has the cheapest clothes I've ever seen at a thrft store.

This is an ok store. Thay have lot's of stuff like clothe's, toy's, jewelry, furniture, appliance's, home decoration's and book's. The only bad thing is that most off the stuff is in really bad shape, either broken or ruined in one way or another. I really would not recommend this thrift shop to anyone when there are better one's out there.

This store is huge and has everything! My hubby and I can spend hours in this store looking for bargains. You do have to do a lot of looking, but when you find something, the price is well worth the effort it took to find it. They have every type of clothing you can imagine for men, women and children. And they even regularly have plus size women's clothing that you can't always find at thrift stores. I don't usually bother with the furniture and appliances, as they seem a little too worn for me, but the book section is AWESOME. I have spend hours going through the shelves at the back of the store and finding all kinds of books, both for myself, my hubby and to give as gifts. And what a great price. It does get crowded, but I am pretty oblivious and just move out of the way.

As for the parking lot, it was repaved!! NO more giant potholes.

I love this store! The sheer size of it is an afternoon of bargain hunting spent usually with success. There are always specials on certain colored or lettered tags, even if it is hard to find something with the right label on sale days (it is usually picked over quick!). The store is organized well and labeled to assist in finding what you want efficiently, although from time to time it can get messy with so many customers sticking what they want, where they want. I've had great success finding vintage clothing here, as well as clothing that made excellant Halloween costumes. I've also found great buys on clothing in general here, but it's best to go early if you want the best selection. They have an enormous amount of woman's shoes, although they can be overpriced considering they are used. I recommend spending some time looking at their books at the back of the store. They have half a wall of hardcover and softcover ones to choose from. Their furniture is usually tacky, as is their household appliances. They do have a lot of children's bikes to choose from at decent prices. They only have two dressing rooms, however, so if you do find a lot of things you want to try on before you buy, prepare to wait. Also, leave your inhibitions aside as the dressing rooms do not have mirrors inside. You have to exit to look at one that is between the dressing booths to see if the outfit is right for you. Be forewarned! If a lot of people are waiting, you will be watched like a supermodel....

PROS: Huge selection of items; Great prices; Huge parking lot
CONS: Parking lot is filled with cavernous potholes that can swallow your car

A lot of the women's clothing is really outdated. To find anything current/pretty, you really have to search - go through every piece on the rack. When you do find something though, the prices have always been great. I've found ice skates in my size for 6 dollars! They have some nice furniture, but being used, I'm not sure I would buy any, even for so cheap. There are several appliances, but they all look really old and seem like they would break easily if they worked at all, so I would definately never buy any appliances from there. So far, Alamo Thrift is my favorite thrift store by far.
