It is shocking how in such a competitive restaurant market food (and service) can be so average. The $28 halibut accompanied by a mound of starch (called risotto) can be consumed in three bites (four if you remember your table manners).

I went to this restaurant on December 18, 2009 with my co-workers for a holiday dinner. The chef, Hector Tice,
who came out and introduced himself, gave us a breakdown of the meals. I had the salmon with vegetables. It was simply delicious! Awesome! It has been a while since i have gone to a restaurant and felt that my money was well spent. I would recommend this restaurant for its superv service.

I used to go to the Black Duck all the time when at my former company as it was literally around the corner. Met up with some old co-workers last night at the duck and now i remember why we always go there for after work. Great drinks and friendly staff. Plus they have that sweet loungy couch area in the front for us to hang out. This is a good spot to go in Flatiron for sure. Cannot comment on the food since i have never eaten here...but they do give out little chocolates!!

I am a research geek.. My hubby & I wanted something special, but yet different & romantic for our 10 year anniversary. I read the reviews previously posted--although everyone is intitled to their opinion, my hubby & I absolutely loved the place! Hospitality was outstanding, the food was absolutely delicious & the atmosphere was simply cozy & everything that we could have ever hoped for! I was very suprised by our cozy booth with rose petals scattered about & the jazz band playing in the distance. The service was outstanding & Richard, was very accomidating to our needs and wants. Being from Texas, that says a lot! The Black Duck is definately a best kept secret that I am telling ALL my friends about! I can't wait to return!

A BIG Texas thank you for a very memoriable anniversary!

My boyfriend and I made a reservation for Valentines Day at the Black duck and were extremely disappointed. From the $85 per person prefix menu, the appetizers, yellowtail, clams, & scallops were pretty good. However the entrees were awful. The steak was cooked well, while we ordered it medium rare. The lobster was so overcooked it tasted like a sponge. We were already an hour and a 1/2 into dinner and didn't want to send the food back. I haven't seen the regular menu, but will not go back to try it.

The Black Duck is mostly known for it's excellent seafood and was just listed under Best Clam Chowders in Best of City Search, I noticed, but this dinner-only restaurant has really high quality steaks too (Filet Mignon, NY Strip, Surf & Turf which is Tuna Loin and Filet). I also asked about the quality of the burger meat and found out they grind the burger meat in-house, I'll try it next time, 15 bucks. They just added Long Island Duckling to the menu!! Which makes sense, I like duck a lot, but am very picky about it. This is the best I've ever had. The breast was pan seared on the skin side so it was very crispy and tender inside served on parsnip puree, yumm, and with an excellent Pomegranate Apple Cider sauce; it also comes with the duck leg prepared as a very well executed confit. ONLY $23!!

Cons: Don't tell your friends, I want to still get a table

Recently dined here BASED upon all the positive reviews. They are all fake. Apart from getting sick 5 hrs after dinner. the food was mediocre at best...and the help is rude and inconsiderate. It took us 4 hrs to get our meal that was cold, stale and tasteless. If you like food or have any sense whatsoever never eat at the black duck.

I was looking forward to Black Duck, as many of the reviews were stellar. To their credit, the food was well prepared and presented. Flavors mingled well and were not overdone. However, the service was atrocious. Our waiter never once said a word to us, just took order, and dropped off plates. I would have bought some wine if he even asked if I wanted a bottle. I had to remind him to bring bread and the comp. Champagne. The tip was already included as a service fee (there were only two of us) I hate seeing that on a bill. As soon as dessert was served, we were kindly asked to HURRY UP. We were at the rest. for about 90 mins, and then everyone in our section was asked to leave. Sorry black duck, never again...

This place is a gem. Cozy and romantic, it offers multiple seating options to suit your mood and the circumstances -- a back-room hideway, a semi-formal dining room, a long bar for drinkers and solo diners, a lounge area (with a fireplace for those cold winter nights), and two variations of outdoor seating (intimite patio and public sidewalk) for those warm summer and fall evenings. The service was perfectly spot-on, the food was exceptional through all three courses I enjoyed, and the wine was fairly priced (which is to say I got what I paid for). I can't recommend "Black Duck" highly enough, but *don't tell your friends* -- I don't want it to be too crowded for my return visit :)

Was in the neighborhood to see a play at the Baruch theatre and saw Black duck was close by and decided to take a chance and make res.
When I walked in to a dim rest. I had my doubts but was greeted with a smile and shown immediately to our table. Decor is semi-nautical but tasteful. We each had a diff. appy and entree and all were excellent. I had salad made w/pears and fish of the day which was prepared just right. My husband had steak&fries- which he said was very good and my bro had crab cake appy which looked delicious (he said it was) and wasabil tuna which was cooked to perfection. I would definately return to this rest if we are in the neighborhood again

Once you walk into this establishment there is an air of relaxed ambiance, which is complimented by a light smattering of a maritime milieu, which does not come off as a kitschy contrivance.. As we placed our orders for the appetizers Chef Tice walked by and stopped by our table to greet our party and suggest some of the day's gastronomic offerings.
Having met him earlier this summer at a charity gala that was catered by many of the city's finer eateries, he was still his cheery, affable self despite the giddy phalanx of patrons streaming in. Besides, his gourmet grail of crab cakes and shrimp alone were enough to goad us into a trip from North Riverdale. As we ordered, one of the stragglers in our party was promptly greeted and seated with our party and we launched into ordering a smorgasbord of surf and turf ,halibut , fillets and steak. All the food was cooked with the immaculate perfection and flavorful nuances that only a "seasoned" chef bestows on every dish. We had our beverages and bread basket refreshed in a timely and non-intrusive manner, which made for a very refreshing dining experience. When it came for time to order dessert Chef Tice happened upon us poring over our menu's visibly flummoxed by all its offerings; suggested a mix of pudding and chocolate cake, which we proceeded to share amongst ourselves, to the delight of all.
What really cinched our night was when the check came we thought all this gourmet food had lulled us into a delusional stupor given the price and service for a party of five. We'll definitely be celebrating more birthday's here. Compared to the myriad of New York's supposedly more august dining establishments, the Black Duck soars above these smarmy peacocks, with the poise and grace of the spartan amphibian it derives its moniker from.

pros- assiduous chef and waitstaff
cons-hard to find

I love Black Duck

How can one not love a place with creative dishes without the expensive pricing?

They always make everything look pretttty.

How can one not love a place that gives you the perfect portion? Not too small. Not too big.

They always balance the right amount of meat, veggie and carb on your plate.

Servers are always nice and they know their food.

The food was good but not great. The portions were massive!

The service was excellent. Since I was there on a business lunch, they chose not to disturb us unless necessary.

I would go again for a business lunch/dinner but I definitely wouldn't come here to hang out for a drink

My wife and I visited the Black Duck last week - the prices on Happy Hour certainly have changed since last December - drafts now $4 - the $5 cocktails now $9 and the $6 martinis are $11 - to be fair I must mention you can now get a glass of the "house" red or white wine for $5

My girlfriend and I frequently are hunting for new restaurants at around the 40 dollar a person range. I stumbled upon this here on city search and decided to go in on a whim. When walking in I was immediately and I mean immediately greeted by Richard, the matrade. He let me know that it will be a few minutes since they are just clearing out a large party but offered us a seat in a lounge where we were washed over by a small jazz trio. He took our drink order and when he came back he said that he had set up a table for us in the back where it was a little quieter and more private. He introduced himself as Richard and showed us a beautiful table where we for the next few hours gorged ourselves on a delicious wine men you and nuevo- american cuisine. Upon leaving he remembered me by name and told me to get home safe. I will definitely be returning Richard.

This is a great place for a romantic evening. Richard definitely notices a couple trying to have an intimate experience.

Unpretentious? What a laugh. What was with the minature head of lettuce I had last night? What did I pay, 10, 12 bucks for a "wedge" salad? I've had bigger brussel sprouts! Seriously, do you think the Black Duck is worthy of 4 star steakhouse pricing? The "live Jazz" is well, live, but that's about it. I'm not sure I'd stay for it anyway...just getting through dinner with the racket coming through the lame sound system was more than I could handle. The "ambience" was more like a college bar after finals with the over priced food on the menu playing the part of the hangover.

I chose the Black Duck for my fiancee?s 30th birthday dinner. I called and spoke to the manager to ask that the hostess wish my girl a happy birthday. Not only did the hostess do this, but we also had a private little table in the back of the nearly empty restaurant. The table was covered with rose petals and just about every employee stopped by the table and gave a birthday greeting. The food was superb. We started with the crab and shrimp cake appetizer, which was excellent. She had the halibut and raved about it. I chose the surf and turf. The espresso rubbed filet was tasty and cooked perfectly. The sesame crusted wasabi tuna was very good with just a bit of bite from the wasabi. For dessert, our waiter brought out that evening's dessert special. It was a chocolate cup with a passion fruit, cheesecake type filling. Not only was it very good, but it was also presented on a decorated plate with a personalized birthday wish. The drinks were good and the bartender pours deep glasses of single malt scotch. Towards the end of the meal, a 3 piece jazz group began playing live music. We moved from our table in the back to the bar and finished our evening there. When we were given our check, neither of us could believe how reasonable the cost of an evening like this. We have both eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the country and this was one of the finest meals and dining experiences we have ever had. This restaurant should never be empty.

I had an enjoyable Wednesday night dinner here. There were hardly anyone there. The location is somewhat hard to find because it's just a flag w/ a Black Duck on it. The number system on that block is confusing, but I finally got it. The place has a nice romantic feel. The food was good, not outstanding. I had the shrimp/crab cake appetizer which was delicious, it was light. Had the Espresso rubbed filet mignon but can't really taste the espresso, but it was still very good filet mignon. I also ate the fish, which my friend thought was a little dry. Overall, it was a pleasant place to come for dinner.

OK so i read the other reviews...I'm not sure these people went to the same place i did...Not only was the food delicious, but it was well priced..And believe me i have had my share of dissapointed meals..
The only downfall would be the desert...But HEY my fat butt REALLY shouldn't be eating anything with chocolate anyway...lolol..The staff was VERY friendly.. which tends to make me nervous sometimes...lolol..BUT HEY with the JAZZ playing and the bartender making those KILLER WHITE COSMOS...My homegirls and i had a really good time...

Reservations early on a saturday night, was seated next to the servers station although the restaurant was empty, impersonal service, inappropriate music ( rock) made the room noisy, main course was delicious
but dessert was not very good. With proper management this could be a great restaurant.

One of the other reviewers mentioned the owner is from Miami Beach and this is the first restaurant in NYC . . . that shows. This place has the chance to be a true long term hidden gem but something is off. It is a restaurant on paper but there is no love here, no feel of a truly welcoming place. The food and selection is fine, but people come out to a place like this to blend into the environment a bit, here it's a little vacant.

I'd heard of Black Duck and then, while searching CitySearch, found it and was impressed by the reviews here. As a bona fide foodie and NYC restaurant maven, I looked forward to the experience. Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed. We were there on Christmas Eve, looking foward to a quiet and romantic evening but were, instead, treated to blaring electonica-club music and attitude galore, compliments of the not-so-competent staff. The Jude Law-look-alike at the bar was airheaded and brusque, ignoring our requests to select a different kind of music (not only because it was Christmas Eve... but because the restaurant's "space" is one that hearkens more toward jazz (they have live jazz here, for God's sake!) and/or something less trendy. The hostess was even less helpful, preferring to gaze into space rather than to help customers. The server was a Dieter-like and unfriendly robotron as well. What a waste, given that this restaurant could and should be poised for greatness. When I spoke to the front desk manager, he informed me that the owner lives in Miami Beach and that this is his "first" place in NYC... Alas, it's more like Miami Beach with the surfer dude 'tudes and the disco ball music blaring than it is the upscale, polished, and elegant place it could -- and should -- be. (The food, by the way, given the annoyances previously mentioned, didn't warrant the time.)

I recently had dinner with some friends and had a wonderful time. This was my first time there. I had the crab cake which was light & flaky, lobster ravioli which melted in my mouth was scrumptious...Kudos to the chef & the wait staff for being attentive. Tasted their Pear martini which was to die for. The waiter made wonderful suggestions. Will definately visit again...

Unsuccessfully tried to convince some friends to go to Novita one recent evening, and was a little miffed at their insistence that we all go instead to some "Brown Goose" place or whatever that I'd never heard of. Luckily, it's good to be wrong sometimes - I'm duly humbled. We ordered the calamari appetizer, Park So. salad, the salmon, filet mignon, halibut and 2 desserts. All very nicely executed and delicious, served by a cordial but not effusive server, in a relaxing, unrushed romantic atmosphere. The only niggles: while the wine list is adequate, it is "just" so (although bottles are well-priced), and you need a GPS navigation system to find your way to the restrooms and back, as they are "whimsically" tucked away in the corridors leading from the adjoining hotel lobby.

Pros: Lovely setting, great value, polished service

Cons: Limited wine list, Osama bin Laden may be hiding in the restroom

The Chef is really talented at cooking fish, which is among the most difficult skills that a Chef can have. Besides Le Bernadin, the best and most expensive seafood restaurant in New York, The Black Duck serves the most phenomenal fresh fish ever. It's really fresh, not over-cooked, and has the most wonderful combinations of ingredients that compliment the dish. Anytime someone comes to town, I take them there. I've eaten at The Black Duck about 6 times over the course of a year. It's also very romantic because of the size of the restaurant, the booths, and the fireplace (in the winter). The staff is not snobby, yet very knowledgeable and friendly (but not too familiar). When the check comes, you won't have a heart attack, it's reasonably priced. Bon appetit!

My wife and i stumbled upon the Black Duck two Thursday's ago, and what a wonderful suprise.
At first we had to navigate through the lobby of a hotel, and just past the front desk we saw it. At first glance you may think that your entering the same old lounge/bar; but you're not. We were seated quickly, and a very nice young man took our drink order. My wife and i had Martini's. They were made to perfection! We sat and chated and went over the menu, which is small but very diverse. I had the expresso rubbed Filet, and My wife the had the Halibut. The steak was cooked just as i asked, and my wife's fish looked so good i wanted to trade my plate for hers. After dinner we both had a chocolate lava cake. The chocolate filling inside of the oozed all over the plate, and if I were not in public i would of cleaned the plate with my tounge. In closing i would like to say that my wife and i plan to make th Black Duck our secret little dinner spot..

My husband and I head up to the Black Duck (from Battery Park City) every time his coworker's jazz trio plays and we're so glad to be introduced to this special, hidden gem. The atmosphere is low-lit and cozy with a beautiful bar, though you may have to search to find the place - signage is virtually nonexistant. We've occasionally brought friends and no one has ever been disappointed with the food. The staff is always top-notch, especially bartender Frank. The Duck is great for both intimate, romantic dinners as well as larger gatherings (nice big banquettes in the back corners).

Never written a review before, but after Black Duck accommodated our last minute Saturday night reservation, I had to. The service was friendly and timely, the food was great...I had the Surf & Turf which had a perfect portion of filet and seared tuna and my fiancee had the striped bass which was lite yet flavorful. Ambience was cosy and romantic and the live jazz was a nice touch and not overpowering. A new favorite...and the price was right...shared appetizer and 4 glasses of wine...$100

I have lived in Gramercy for four years and have never been to the Black Duck, or even heard of it. I happened upon it after work this past Monday by accident and ended up staying for the entire happy hour and then stayed for dinner. The bar was amazing, and surprsingingly full for a Monday night. It has a beautifully lit marble surface, a fabulous bartender (named Matt or Marc?), excellent drinks and specials and great food. The bar bites weren't anything special (we had calamari and wings, very ordinary), but our dinner was phenomonal, as was our service. The bartender is almost excessively knowledgable, and their wine list is small but decent. Go for the Surf and Turf or the Strip Steak. Anyway, I don't know why this place is such a secret. The decor isn't sleek, but it's background. My girlfriend and I are now hooked!

We had planned a night in the city for my friends birthday we booked a room at the giraffe hotel. We got to the hotel around 9:30pm they were overbooked so they sent us around the corner to the Park South Hotel which we never heard of so we were annoyed but when we got to the hotel it was actually nice. While checking in we heard live music so we asked where it was coming from they told us from the restaurant. At this point we needed food and drinks so we checked in and headed down to the restaurant. We sat down for dinner and when our waiter found out it was my friends birthday he quickly came back with glasses of champagne to wish her well. We had a great time. Thank god for the giraffe being sold out I never would have found this place other wise.

I was in great anticipation of my visit here, since it was so highly rated and dubbed "NY's best kept secret". After my visit, I can't say that this secret isn't worth keeping.

Though the lounge area in the front is cute, nothing here is really impressive. In fact, it's borderline average. Even though the food was more seasoned than many other places, my salad, my chicken and my friend's duck were all SALTY! Service was average, decor - average, risotto - average, clam chowder - average.

Bottom line - you won't be missing out on anything special if you skip The Black Duck.

It's a cozy restaurant, food is good and they make good litchee martinis but as the waiters spend more time chatting with each other than taking orders, it's very hard to get served.

Found this amazing new restaurant called the black duck. The food was delicious, I had the wasabi tuna which was the best I ever had in New York. For the entree I had the expresso rub filet which was just to suck your fingers. The atmospher and the service was great, staff was very pleasant. There was such a cute bartender. You have to go and check him out. I think I over heard them call him frankie or something. Just overall great experience.
I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone.

This is a beautiful little hotel bar and restaurant. I lived next door and loved to go down for a drink at their uplit marble bar under the beautiful lighting or sit by the fireplace when the live band is not playing. Never eaten dinner there, but plan to soon.

Who knew? I stumbled across The Black Duck Wednesday of last week. The menu was a pleasant surprise.. I ordered the crab cake appetizer with an amazing apple salad (it was the best crab cake I ever had), my entree was the espresso rubbed fitet mignon.. which was cooked perfectly.. it was one of the best filets I've had in NYC. The service was friendly and efficient.. after dinner my friends and decided to stay for a drink because of the live jazz. We sat on the most comfortable, burgundy velvet couch sipping on Mojitos. I had a great time and I'll definitely go back!!

Took 16 business clients for dinner 03 April. 17 people swelled to 20. BD staff quickly accommodated and was pleasant througout. Food was good, but, in the business environment, the service was what really counted. I could tell they rarely had a large party, but they gave it their best and made it a very pleasant evening. I appreciated the extra care and attention -- Great work, guys!

I recently visited the Black Duck with a group of 9--and they now have 9 more fans! Among us, we ordered a large sampling of the menu, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. (Read: clean plate club) The service is extremely friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere gives it that relaxing, neighborhood vibe. Go now. Go often.

I hate to rain on the Black Duck parade, but I was not all that overwhelmed. Agreed that the dining room is nice and the tunes are good, but I can only rate the food slightly above average. Had the mushroom salad which was ok, but the asparagus were warm (nice) and the mushrooms freezing (bad). Then onto the pork chop for me and the duck for my companion. Pork overcooked but flavorful and the duck very fatty. Service was prompt and friendly, but overall, for dishes in the mid-$20s, I'd rather go to an Artisanal or Park Bistro.

Went to the Black Duck for my girlfriend's birthday after reading the reviews on Citysearch. I thought the extremely positive rating might have been inflated by overzealous diners, but they are anything but exagerations. While we're not seasoned reviewers, this was the best meal of our lives. In fact, the entire dining experience was outstanding. The Espresso Rubbed Filet Mignon was outstanding. Extremely tasty dish. My girlfriend's fish (sorry I don't remember the name) was in a jalepeno sauce not too sweet or too hot. Fantastic. The Bananas and Fruit Foster took my breath away. Add this to the outstanding atmosphere and very chill live Brazillian jazz (on weekends) and I would not hesitate to recomend this to anyone looking for a wonderful dining experience.

I was recently turned on to the Black Duck, for one of thier 5 dollar martinis at happy hour. Last week I decided to sit for dinner w/ a few friends, it was incredible. The Foie Gras was simply to die for. My Girlfriend raved over the burger, while my friend said the halibut was fresh from the boat. The intimate setting and gracious staff made for a perfect evening. Don't miss this spot even if you have to travel!

I paid my second visit to Black Duck last night after a excellent meal several months back. The restaurant didn't let me down. The food is artfully prepared and a wonderful treat for the taste buds. An excellent wine selection complements every bite. The wait staff is attentive, but not obtrusive.
The restaurant is an excellent example of what makes New York the dining capital of the world...

I chose the Black Duck as the venue for a romantic meal with new special lady in my life. I'm very glad I did!

The Black Duck was a tremendous surprise. The food was outstanding and the service was tops. My wife and I purposely tried varying dishes and all were prepared artistically and with a flare your palate will not soon forget. This place is a treasure, but keep it quiet so my table will always be available.
