The energy of Schiller's is electric even on a week night. If you can get a seat the place to be is definitely at the bar. With an extensive list of expertly mixed cocktails Schiller's lives up to the name Liquor Bar. This is a great place to meet neighborhood locals or sexy foreigners. Don't be intimidated by the hulky bartenders, their friendly charm will keep you coming back again and again.
Brunch, lunch, and dinner are well priced. Standouts include the Fried oysters, Onion Soup, and Steak Frites.
Come on the right night and you just might be sitting next to one of the celebrities who make Schiller's a local stop when in town.

Pros: Fantastic knowledgable bartenders

We ate at Schiller's on a weekday night. Wasn't too crowded. Got a table right away. We had the bibb salad, hanger steak and pan fried trout with asparagus. The food was fresh, well-seasoned. The steak was seared on the outside and pink inside - very flavorful. The trout was crispy on the outside, tender inside - very tasty. Drinks were good. We liked the atmosphere. The service was just fine. Pricing wasn't cheap but not out of line with other comparable NYC bars and restaurants.

Cons: A little hard to get to

We had a reservation for 9:00PM and didn't get seated until 10:30. We were a large party but they never told us they wouldn't be able to accommodate us -- they took our reservation, took our credit card to hold it, and when we got there it was "5 more minutes, 5 more minutes" for an hour an a half. The food used to be OK but the burger was charred on the outside and raw on the inside, and the pumpkin salad was tasteless. The steaks were tiny and tough, and the cocktails, which used to be amazing, were small and poorly mixed. The space was cramped and crowded with loud, tacky, annoying people. One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had in 20 years of living and eating out in New York. They should close.

I read a few reviews on this site and the experience is really good or really bad. I was in the neighborhood with a few friends looking for some place to stop and eat, Schillers looked like good energy so we stopped in. That was things went down hill from there. The place seemed fun but it was pricier than I thought considering the food was not that great. They seem like the type of place that is used to being really busy so they expect things to continue that way. Baltizar and Pastis are definitely better options. I guess Schillers is the runt of the bunch. Dry staff and management.

Ok, I just don't get this place at all. Been there on several occassions. After my second visit it has not been my choice but i've ended up going because I was meeting people who were dining there. Its a sudo French - American bistro. The waitstaff is not that friendly. The food is ok at best. They do have a couple of really greesy dishes that sort of define them. Greesy mac and cheese, or greesier mac and cheese with square bacon bits in more pools of grease. They have a poor wine list of overpriced bad wines. A $14 hamburger. Cafe Charbon in the same neighborhood has a much much better burger, fries and salad for $10. Even the hotel on Rivington's burger is less expensive than the unseasoned bland burger at this place. It's loud, and it seems their apporoach to customer service is that they are doing you the favor.
I suggest that there are better alternatives in the neighborhood. This place is a no no. For drinks there is Verlaine, 151, Cafe Charbon, Stanton Social, Allen and Delancey, THOR, Spitzers Corner just to start. Why waste your money on this place, with ok food, poor service, not great drinks that aren't cheap, not comfortable seating dingy nasty bathrooms (they need to renovate those dungens).
Only redeeming menu items is they have one good desert, a taffy cake with ice cream. If they even think of removing that from the menu they should consider closing. They are doing the neighborhood a disservice and I think the patrons just don't know how many other cool resturants there are in the area.
Maybe they were better and are still floating on that reputation. But now they are lazy. By patroning here, spending your hard earned money with the overall experience you have there and also based on the food and drinks, I would not recommend it to anyone. Unless they are the someone who loves TGI Fridays or Applebees. This is an overpriced Applebees.

Like this place for a few reasons - they have a great atmosphere, great drinks and reasonably priced food. The decor is tarnished mirrors, withered tile floors and old fashioned everything ? from the bathrooms to the decorations. My favorite drink is the ginger martini. It's a fun spot, but can be overly crowded at times.

went here with to dine with a friend that I haven't seen in quite some time. We let the waiter know that we would probably be there a long time(and we were...3 1/2 hours). He didn't seem annoyed at all about that. We dined slowly. We each ordered a martini. They were delicious and at our table only seconds after ordering them. We shared an appetizer of Baby Artichokes which(after a bit of salt) were fantastic. I had a burger for dinner. It was good. I asked for mustard. Even though it came out in a yellow squeeze bottle it was hot as hell and burned my nose. It sort of ruined a burger that would have been quite delicious. My only complaint is that I should have been told it was "kick your butt" mustard. The waiter(his name was James by the way) was charming and funny. When we passed on dessert, he sent over a delicious english toffee cake(on the house) with a big ol' sparkler in it and said "Happy November, girls". It was very sweet.
Overall, the food and drinks were good. We got there early which is a good idea because it gets packed quickly. I really think the waiter was what made our night complete. I would definitely go there again

Pros: low key, fun atmosphere....great for a nice, casual dining experience

Cons: gets really loud, really quick. I had no voice by the end of the night since I had to shout to my dinner guest

Great steak frites, really yummy cocktails. Very reasonably priced wine. Definitely make a reservation, and don't expect it to be quiet!

I used to go here all the time around when this place opened--I loved the blood orange mimosas and the fries served with lemon mayonnaise. They also do great Pimm's cups in the summer months. The wines are organized by "cheap, decent, and good." Luckily the cheap wine is actually pretty decent. I'm not sure what the crowd is like anymore, but it used to get a little noisy. It's a fun, casual place and the brunch is great if you have a hangover.

Have been to Schillers more than a dozen times since it opened - what, like five years ago? It is still consistent - very fun ambiance, good food and a great value compared to many other trendy NY spots. Had brunch for a friends birthday last sunday so made a reservation for six. It took about 20-30 minutes to be seated as the place was absolutely mobbed, but the host was very polite about the delay.

Food was great and even including some brunch drinks price was very reasonable. Service was fine - not the best ever, but not an issue either. Was hard for the wait staff to navigate so I can't blame them too much.

Overall a fun experience - and I will go back for atleast another five years I am sure.

The brunch food was pretty good, and warrants a repeat visit. The bad thing was we had reservations, but still waited for half an hour because apparently they crossed our names off thinking they seated us already. If we didn't keep asking who knows how much longer we would've stood there. Also, the servers seem overwhelmed because it's slow, and they forget to bring you things you ask for.

I had an amazing dinner at this place. The entry I had was incredibly good, as was the Manhattan martini. Our waiter was so cool that when we told him we had to skip on dessert for the sake of going to Magnolias, that we brought him back a cupcake! He gave us a hug for that. And the bathroom was cool and different... warranted a picture. I had a wonderful evening at this place.
Its made my list of places I have to eat at at least once, when in NYC.

Relaxed, chic and fun bistro atmosphere on the Lower East Side, great at any time! Food resondably priced and delicious. Steak Frites a must!

First and foremost we need to have sit down with the interior designer.. The tiles caused a reverb and an echo that made conversation next to impossible. If you are unfortunate enough to be seated by the bar, plan on having numerous rear ends millimeters from your head. My date only had to lean back in his chair and he became part of a new group and conversation. Don't even get me started on my non existent server. The food was fairly good except for the steak frites, where the steak was so charred that it left a bad aftertaste in our mouths long after the meal was done.

Arrived just before the early dinner rush around 6:15 and had a great meal! An absolute must is the Goat Cheese "Petatou" appetizer, to die for! I had a seared Monkfish and my wife enjoyed Steak Frites both dishes perfectly done. Finished w/key lime pie, not the best in the world but refreshing on the first day of summer. Service was decent. My only complaint is that the tables are Miniscule but in someways I suppose that adds to the charm!

My friends and I didn't get around to making rsvps for dinner Friday nite and wandered Rivington St for a while lookin for a place that would take 6 people as a walk-in. Most places turned us down but the hosts at Schillers were super nice, and said they would do what they could when the whole party arrived. So a couple of us grabbed drinks at the bar and sure enough, the hosts gave us a table after everyone got there, even tho it was crowded! drinks at the bar were AMAZING. the french martini and the white chocolate martini were excellent, one of the best drinks i've had in the city. Food wise, we got nachos as appetizers which were pretty good and i had the hangar steak with fries--steak was ok, fries were crunchy, which i liked. service there was excellent, food is good, and prices pretty good. fun to people watch too. would def go back to just hang at the bar, would want to comeback to try the brunch menu

On my second visit to Schiller?s, I ignored the appetizers altogether and ordered the oyster po? boy for the table (served on a butcher board with commendably fresh, crisp oysters and homemade tartar sauce), plus the dense, toasty Cuban sandwich, which contains satisfying amounts of ham, pulled roast pork, and plenty of pickles. McNally has a fondness for the retro comfort foods of his homeland, and the one to order here is the Welsh rarebit, which is served on thick, chewy wedges of toast, topped with melted Cheddar, a crumbling of Stilton, and slices of roasted tomato. There are several serviceable (and at $11, modestly priced) pasta-style creations, too, like gnocchi served in a kind of griddle with a pesto sauce, and a simple al dente bowl of spaghetti (?cacio e pepe?) mixed with cracked pepper, spinach, and pecorino. Best of all, though, is a bowl of rigatoni in a mildly creamy tomato sauce with chunks of sweetly spicy Italian sausage.

the reviews were mixed but leaned to the positive side, the 2 hosts were nice when i asked for a biz card so i could come back. windows and open doors surround the place which sit on the corner, so i think it would be a great place for brunch.

I've been here a few times, the first better than the rest. Maybe it's me, but the last time I went back the food was mediocre and the portions were smaller. Don't like the yuppy crowd here either. It's extremely noisy at this place, talking to your friends is almost impossible. The best part about this place was the "trick" bathroom.

Schiller's has an interesting (read: different) list of wines compared to the average wine bar and provides little when it comes to frills and decor. But the atmosphere at Schiller's is old school -- trendy but not too chic, and crowded on Friday and Saturday nights but not packed. The menu offers delicious food and if you are hungry don't miss out on the shrimp. On weekend nights be sure to arrive earlier if possible to snag a table close to the bar. Waitress service is just okay.

I have been here over forty times since I live close. This is a great nighttime place to get a late dinner or a nice drink. They use the best stainless steel taps for their beer, so the pour is always good. Sometimes there is a wait, but it is worth it. The food is not the best around, but the prices are not outrageous enough to complain about. The burger, The Steak Frites and the French Onion Soup are favorites. Brunch is the kicker. Generous portions of egg dishes, and your coffee is never empty. Of course, sometimes the waiting and the loudness is going to cause some complaints, but so is the story with most restaurants in lower Manhattan.

I am shocked that McNally allows his name to be tied to this place. Food and decor are average and the service is horrendous. Rude, slow, arrogant (about what??), unhelpful. Don't even bother trying to speak to a manager, he is even worse. There are so many better places to go in this city. Don't waste your time.

A group of us came here for our New Year's dinner, and we had a ok time overall. I had the steak special, and while it was perfectly cooked, it had way too much pepper for my taste. Four people in our group had the fish special and while it tasted ok, it looked AWFUL. For a $22 dish, you would think the presentation would be nice, but no, it was a large layer of grey mushrooms, and then topped with a flat greyish fish piece. Our waiter was great though and was very attentive. The deserts were good, but again, not anything particularly spectacular. I had the apple cobbler, and it basically chunky warm applesauce with a crust on top...tasty, but not what I expected. We stayed for drinks afterwards for about an hour and they were good and reasonably priced. Take it for what it is, a basic restaurant surrounded by trendy bars.

My husband and I decided to try Schillers on a Sunday rainy evening. We were interested just from checking out the catchy Web site-- along with its great wine list (cheap being one of the restaurant's options). After getting there, I was totally in love! The scene was live with locals who were chill in their own skin, and the food was even better. The salmon was mouth-watering! Also, my fantabulous martini was garnished with a cucumber-- who knew that was better than a lemon slice???? All in all, I definitely recommend the spot. Dancing to the music in your seat doesn't hurt, either. I found myself shaking a tail feather in my seat and noticed that I wasn't alone AND no one felt stupid about it!!!!! One last thing-- don't be confused by the bathrooms! Women, stay to the left, men to the right! Enjoy!

Had a great birthday dinner for my girlfriend with a few couples. It was a Saturday night so the reservation was tough to get but they did have a 6:30 open. I was hoping for a little later. After waiting for about 15 minutes we got our tabel and were happily sat. The host/hostesses were very nice and accomodating when I told them of the birthday. The drinks, food, and service were great. It's a little loud and brightly lit but overall everything was exceptional.

The drinks, food, and service were great. It's a little loud and brightly lit but overall everything was exceptional.

Pros: food, drinks, service

Cons: brightly lit, loud

I also have a similar story that's been shared about this place. We arrived on busy Friday night and were told we would be seated in 45 minutes. About an hour and ten minutes later we were still standing, the only people still standing by the door waiting for a table. People who arrived after us were seated before us. I understand that people arrive with reservations take priority over walk-ins but, I felt we were treated rather poorly by the staff who eventually tried to give us a shoddy drink after an hour of standing on our feet and watching everyone else get seated before us.

I've been to Schiller's before - not during the busiest hours - and had a decent time, but I don't think I will ever, ever, go there again after the way my friends and I were treated. If they had been nicer about it, or at one point just honestly said, "You know what, it looks like we can't seat you for another 45 minutes..." I could have respected that. Instead, I felt their conciliatory gestures were empty and insincere. Eventually, after an hour and some change we left - feeling that they had no intention of seating us whatsoever.

I sat at the bar with a friend on a slow afternoon. The bartender (seemingly) had a mis-poured beer. "Would you like it?" he asked. OK. We ordered one cocktail. When it was finished he refilled it without asking, smiling, both of us nodding. I thought he was being generous and giving us another unasked for freebie. After all, free beer right? The bill comes with two cocktails, $20, no beer.

I'm used to a lot of precision service at Keith McNally's restaurants and have been a longtime fan. This was, at best, imprecise, at worst (and I don't think this is the case), deceitful. I thought it was at least worth sharing, if for nothing else than a tender word of warning.

I have never in my life had an experience more terrible than the one I had at Schillers. They should be ashamed of themselves. My brother and his pregnant wife (6.5 months pregnant) came to visit a few weeks ago. They had been to Schillers before and wanted to go back. I warned them that the staff at Schillers was horribly rude, but they didn't care - they loved it.

When we got there, the hostess told us that the wait would be 45 minutes. I decided to take our name off the list. However, another host (perhaps the manager) saw my 6.5 months pregnant sister-in-law and said "no, don't go, you guys will get the very next table." After watching him seat two parties ahead of us, I asked the host/manager - "I thought we were next." He said that he couldn't seat us before those two parties, but we were next. Needless to say, 45 minutes later, we still hadn't been seated.

I partially blame myself for not realizing that this would happen sooner. It is, afterall, the worst restaurant ever with the worst staff ever. However, the manager/host kept promising we would be the "very next table" and my guests didn't want to walk anywhere else (since one of them was 6.5 months pregnant and all). They kept my 6.5 pregnant sister-in-law standing there ON HER FEET for 50 minutes, all the while promising that we would be next.

Disrespectful. Don't treat pregnant women this way. It is crystal clear that you don't need our business (there are plenty of wankers just dying to wait 45 minutes to eat your crappy food), so let us go somewhere else - especially if you intend on making us wait the amount of time that we clearly weren't interested in waiting.

I know that the NYC "scene" has thrown all courteousness to the wind for the sake of image, but I never thought it would stoop this low.

I hate this place. So much hate, I can't even express it in a post.

Pros: I have nothing good to say.

Cons: Pretentious, rude, the worst dining experience I have had since I moved to the city. Just awful.

LOVED the cuban sandwich. Came here after a night of drinking in the neighborhood and this really hitt the spot.

With 55 people writing reviews, its clear that this place is something to talk about and definitely worth checking out for yourrself. Its a unique space that's comfortable, serving comfort food. At 2:00 in the morning, its just as busy as any other time. Good for large groups, but it may be a bit too loud.

Was looking for a quick bite on a Wednesday night. Ordered the bibb salad and soft shell crab. The salad was somewhat overpriced. The soft shell crab was ok but more on the greasy side. It was hard to enjoy due to the extremely loud music. The waitress was very nice, though.

A bit of a zoo but I guess that's the beauty of the place. Duck and fish & chips were decent, nice server, good prices, cool old world bathroom. But crowded and really loud so you need to be in the right frame of mind.

This place is New York... it takes a principle that has been sucessful (ie. Balthazar & Pastis), and flips it to LES-perfection. On any given evening Schillers is full, uptowners, locals, tourists.... yet it remains personal and special. The Hosts are always on top of things, the mixologists behind the bar can't be beat...and give as attentive food service at the bar as you would get at a table. The menu always has something new to offer, and I am never disappointed. Just as good are the standards, you cant go wrong with the "Steak Frites" or the "Fish & Chips". Oh... and definitly save room for the sticky toffee pudding! Just a warning... it's a busy place, so come early and have a drink before you eat!

Schiller's has it all -- great food, drinks, prices, ambiance, service, and a lively crowd. I'd recommend the rotisserie chicken with a side of fries followed by the sticky toffee pudding, or try some of their fantastic fish specials. I once had a black bean soup there that I can describe only as a soup epiphany (haven't seen the soup on the menu since). The funky bathroom itself is worth the price of admission! The only drawbacks are that it gets very loud so that you can only talk to adjacent people, and sometimes it gets so crowded that there's a bit of jostling for space between the bar patrons and the diners. Also, brunch is quite good but they don't serve alcohol before noon.

We went there last night as walk-ins and were seated in under 50 min (not bad for Sat.). The place is interestingly decorated and dimly lit w/old white tiles and yellow glowing flourescents. It's definitely crowded, loud, and people watching is a must. Drinks were good, but food was average. I had pork chops (a little dry/chewy) and she had the trout. Overall, both were fine, but not very interesting. Great place to go with a group of friends for the slick scene and drinks.

This place is such a great value! The only bad things about is that if you get the wrong table you have a lot of people sort of standing around you while eating but just request a table in the back to diminish that. I had the grilled chicken with salad and it was really good as was the "Decent" red wine. Very trendy, lively atmosphere and can't beat the price.

After many rave reviews, I decided to go to schillers for dinner with two friends. We made a reservation for 9 and got there at 8:30 to sit at the bar. There were no seats at the bar, it was too crowded to stand near it because of the location of chairs and several large parties. We were not seated until 10:15 and the food which came quickly was overall disappointing, uninteresting and not good.

We went there a few weeks ago with a party of three. We waited almost 2 hours to be seated for our 9:00 reservation. After repeately checking with the hostess and manager we were finally seated after 11. The place was so crowded that you could not move. The food was awful and like the other review we had butts in our faces and drinks on our head while we were eating.

Maybe they were having an off night -- but we all agreed never to go back.

This restaurant is fantastic. The food is delicious and the hipster crowd is fun (not snobby). I particularly like the way they serve wine by carafe - you have to choose between ordering "cheap" "moderate" or "expensive". The service is fun and friendly, and the atmosphere is great. My only gripe is that you really have to call 1 week in advance to secure a decent reservation -- but once you get there -- you'll see why.

I went there for a fun business dinner and was not disappointed. Drinks at the bar were great. We ordered a shrimp appetizer that was fantastic. The cesar salad and hamburgers my companions ordered were huge. I ordered the salmon and it was delicious with a great texture. For 4 people with several drinks, bottles of wine, appetizers and entrees, the price tag was $170 before the tip.

Schiller's has a cute bistro feel with some excellent food. Definitely go for the steak frites - signature dish that doesn't disappoint. We got some sangria and it was pretty good too. If you want good food in a young, casual setting without breaking the bank, this is the place to go.

I have been here twice and both times ordered the Schiller's special steak fritters! Loved it in medium rare and pepper sauce. would not order anything else:-) Excellent wine selections. Ambiance....cant beat it. (my friend said it reminded him on London!)
they might want to reduce the music volume so we can hear each other talking though. Otherwise...thumbs up!

The atmosphere is terrible too bright too loud. The chairs are very uncomfortable. We were seated inches from the bar and had to contend with people standing all around us waiting for a table. The food was terrible. I had the french onion soup which tasted like it had a cup of sugar in it. Why everyone flocks to this place I will never understand, there are so many better restaurants in the city.

Schiller's is a quintessential restaurant--great for brunch, lovely for dinner. The eggs benedict are wonderful, as well as the homemade doughnuts. I went to dinner with a large group of friends; we had a wonderful time sharing fries, burgers, and eggplant parmesan (which, by the way, are a bit on the spicy side). Don't miss out on an order of fries, and make sure to get plenty bottles of wine!
