My go to pick for a midday client drink. The location is the obvious draw for such an occasion, the drinks are expertly made, and the atmosphere is perfect for a meeting.

Campbell Apartment is my favorite bar to entertain out of town clients. It's a lovely after dinner spot to have a cocktail and see people off in Grand Central. The drinks are expertly made and the decor is cozy and comfortable.

The space is great. End of story.

Now I understand that people will be upset at the hostess for her "discretion" however, I am extremely thankful for this so I am not sitting there enjoying my drink with business partners and have Hank and Peggy Hill sporting their Birkenstock open toe - thank god for the white socks- mosey on up beside us taking pics for facebook. This is still Manhattan - even if it is in Grand Central Terminal.

Some friends and I took a trip to NYC in April 2009 and The Campbell Apartment was the first place we went for a cocktail. Not only had a friend who used to live in NYC recommend it, another friend from CT suggested it as well and even met us there. When we got to the lounge, we were promptly seated (at 6:30 on a Friday night when it was starting to fill up with the afterwork crowd) by a hostess as pleasant as she was beautiful. Our waitress was even better--professional, prompt, friendly--just a doll! She even offered to take a picture of us before we left, which we loved even if we did look like tourists. The drinks were amazing, the people watching was worth it (there is no eye candy better than a man in a suit who knows how to wear it!) and the service was spectacular. Perhaps they've changed the dresscode since then (which I happily welcome and will dress accordingly when I visit again), but I have the picture to prove that everyone in my party was in jeans (except for my CT friend who was coming from work) and the staff did not even blink. I am returning to NYC next week, this time with my husband for a Valentine's Day weekend trip. The Campbell Apartment will be our first stop.

The service here is the worst of any bar I've been to in the past 10 years. Rude at the door, rude waiters. I love cool bars, but good service is paramount. You won't get it here. Go somewhere else.

Overpriced, rude, really rude, never had anyone be more rude. I could go on, but. life is too short and hopefully management of this gem will be too.

Went there there on a thursday with friends and was amazed at how beautiful the room was. The place was packed but it really does feel like a secret in grand central.
The hostess's were lovely and professional and after a drink at the bar we were seated near the front of the room. The only problem was are server who was wearing a suit instead of a cocktail dress like everyone else. she was very cold and abrubt and wouldn't smile at all. but who knows everyone has a bad day right? that aside I am looking forward to coming back for another drink. (and hopefully another waitress)

Although the space is great and very convenient, the hideous door staff are a real turn off - to the extent that I have stopped coming here and have steered my friends away. I have seen these gum chewing trogoldytes give perfectly acceptable trying-hard tourists the rudest up-and-down. Even if the place is misguidedly trying to create some kind of club vibe (ridiculous given the location and demographic), no responsible and/or decent owner would allow doorpeople to behave like that. I even saw a too-cool-for-midtown woman with a broken foot get turned away because she was wearing... ONE SNEAKER on her broken foot.
Can the owner of this beautiful bar please deal with the door issue!

The Campbell Apartment is the PERFECT, most UNIQUE, ROMANTIC space in midtown and the entire city. I came the other night with my husband and the sweet hostess explained they were finishing up with a private event and would be opening shortly and if we liked we could start with a glass of wine at the Parlor bar and move inside once the bar was clean. She held a table for us and came and got us right away when the bar was setup. We had a comfy seat in front of the fireplace with a great view of the room. I definitely reccommend their new Apisco Sour cocktail. I've never had anything like it before. Working in the hospitality business myself, I really appreciated the staff's ATTENTION to us while they were very busy. We loved the Campbell Apartment and will definitely be back soon

I appreciate a place with good service but this place has the RUDEST and the most OBNOXIOUS hostesses you'll ever come across. I was appalled the moment I stepped foot in this place which I was looking forward to checking out with some friends. My advice to you all...STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Don't waste your time. Spread the word. And my advice to the Management...hire staff with better manners! Btw, if I could rate this place below 1 star...I would! Bottom line...NOT RECOMMENDED.

I have lived in Manhattan for 12 years and have NEVER been treated as rudely at any establishment as I was at Campbell Apartment -- which, until this incident, I used to like. I was meeting friends at Campbell and arrived there first. I walked in and went to one of the seats toward the back and sat down. The server very clearly saw me and proceeded to deliberately ignore me, going to the groups on either side of me. (I am a polished, attractive professional, so nothing in my appearance or demeanor should have caused such rudeness.) As my friends were about 20 minutes late, she passed and ignored me multiple times - I would try to signal or call out, and she'd look right through me or pretend she hadn't heard. When my friends arrived, they came over and sat down -- but not without attracting the attention of the hostess, who made a beeline to our table and proceeded to tell one of my friends, who was pregnant, that she was not allowed in the bar because she was wearing sneakers (though she had on business attire otherwise). We were in the back corner and my friend promised she would keep her feet hidden under the table. No matter - the woman insisted that we leave and wouldn't move until we did. I then noted the rudeness of the server who had ignored me for 20 minutes, and the hostess said, in an extremely snotty tone, "That's because we didn't seat you." Angered, I took my friends across the street to the Yale Club and have since then boycotted Campbell and have convinced others to do the same.

My wife was meeting up with my friends and I for an afterwork drink. We were already there having our drinks and some food. When my wife got to the door she was greeted by a very rude, very snooty hostess named Lisa who flat out refused to let her in,... even to inform us she couldn't get in!!!! That's right, no offer to kindly wait while she informed us of the tragic dress code infraction and that my wife was waiting at the entrance, nothing,.. except a whole lot of unnecessary attitude,.. thanks Lisa.

Give this place a pass.

We've been to the The Campbell Apartment many times in the past, and last night we were meeting friends already at the bar. The maitre'd/host/ bouncer, big rude guy, stopped us in our tracks and would not let us in because of my serious fashion error. How was I dressed? Jeans? t-shirt? sandals? No none of those...
I was wearing a black suit and crisp white open shirt. On my feet, I was wearing black Vans (a flat canvass rubber sole shoe ). The maitre'd/host was not going to have any discussion at all, he was actually quite snooty about it. So we all were forced to leave....and what good fortune that across the hallway, is Chipriani's where we were quickly seated and could actually carry on a conversation without yelling which we'd have to do at The Campbell Apartment, a very over rated, loud, expensive and unfriendly establishment..

I am a regular at the Campbell apts and for the last four years I can say that 99% of the time my experience there has been very positive. The drinks are well made, the waitresses are cute and the bartenders are nice..and cute as well. They have a strict dress code so dress to impress and no sneakers or sandals for men. The wine is decent and the drink concoctions are to be applauded. The maitre'd/host/ bouncer (whatever he is) is extremely stuffy and would do better in his native England.
He needs to smile more (or should I say once). Well,k maybe he's missing teeth. Who knows! Its a shame the guy who worked before him is no longer there. He was very pleasant.

This is an excellent place when you need to impress a date or a client from out of town. One more thing: The drinks are pricey but worth it!

Noisy, crowded to the point of not being able to actually appreciate the surroundings and too expensive to be treated rudely and not be able to hear the people you are sitting with. Subtle discrimination against anyone over 40 and those without the right 'look'--a certain crowd is welcomed there and others are not. There are many places in NYC with much better atmosphere, service and inclusiveness. Skip this place without regret.

A friend introduced me to The Campbell Apartment last evening. What an awesome place! Friendly smiles from all of the staff. Great decor. Fast bar service despite the crowd. Definitely on my A list now. Crowded? Yes. A little pricey? Sure. You can get both of those in many other NYC locales that have much less to offer. Definitely a must for anyone, especially a real NYer!

Tucked away in Grand Centeal Station, The Campbell Apartment is now a swank bar, but was once the private office of John Campbell. You have to get there early or reserve a table, but it is worth searching it out just to see the old architecture. They also have tasty themed cocktails, such as prohibition punch.

I have been to The Campbell Apartment on many occasions, business and personal and in the past have always had an enjoyable time. Drinks were always great, staff very friendly. But the last two times I have visited in the past 2 months, I feel like the whole dynamic of the place has changed. No longer are there friendly faces to greet me at the door, or happy, friendly faces to serve me my drinks. In the past I have always raved about the service and how friendly everyone working there was and recommended it to many people , but now I have to vehemently disagree. I don't know what is going on with the place but the poor service that I received the last two times I was there, will strongly make me think twice about revisiting ever again. Sure, the place is beautiful, but the draw to me was the over exuberant greetings and service (and tasty drinks) that made me come back. But no more. Someone should do something about that. In a city that houses thousands of bars, one that concentrates on customer service is a must. I thought this was one of them, unfortunately I was wrong. Definitely go to see the room, but go elsewhere for a drink.

Cons: Terrible, unfriendly staff

I was concerned that the place would loose some of it's allure when they closed to remodel. I was not disappointed the place is one of our (go to) places when showing guest around the city. We enjoy it most in the Winter months, the drinks along with the friendly staff will warm your spirit.

This place is classy and has it's history. Very expensive and fills up quickly. You have to reserve tables.
The dress code is VERY STRICT! no sneakers allowed and it doesn't matter how much $$ your party is spending. They watch you like hawks too if you are trying to scrounge your way in. We had a party of about 10 and they would not let our co-worker in who had a button down and khakis (he had sneaks though). So, just keep that one in mind. This is not a place for casual affairs, business or special affairs only I would say.

I went to the Campbell Apartment with friends on a warm summer Friday after work. I did dress appropriately (as there is a dress code which they do enforce). The service was very attentive and the drinks were great, but VERY expensive. Also, there was NO air conditioning. The bar is very attractive, but very old and small. You also need a reservation for a table, even for two people. I would not go back, as there are many other nicer/more modern/more reasonably priced bars in NYC.

After many previous visits with out of town guests as a last stop of their evening before seeing them off to their train, I was appalled at what transpired on Saturday April 28th.
As all who have been to the Campbell Apartment know, visitors must climb two sets of stairs to enter.
Where the hostess and staff waiting by the door have plenty of time to size you up.
A group of four of us arrived, and walked in, I was pointing out the details, and telling the story of the place to my guests for a few minutes before making our way over to the bar. At which point a hostess approached our group, and told us we needed to leave; because according to her, one of us was wearing "sneakers".
I can assure you NO ONE in our party of four had on anything resembling sneakers.
The conclusion drawn, the complexion of my guests, not their attire was the problem.
These were 3 casually, yet well dressed men of the age of 40. I was the only Caucasian in the group.
I found this to be an exceptionally disturbing occurrence, and am absolutely horrified that this kind of racism exists in a city as diverse as Manhattan.
Disgraceful.

You've got to love the story behind this place almost as much as the place itself: how could part of Grand Central simply have gotten lost?

It's found now, and what a great place for a cocktail. From the old safe to the decorative painting on the beams, the Campbell Apartment is a must-stop. Bartenders are helpful and mix a good drink. It's quiet enough for a conversation, too.

Was forced to sign up and write a review when I read the negative review below this one! This lounge is one of my favorites in the city. Beers are $7 (not $12) and the drinks are worth every penny. The specialty cocktails are wonderful and the service truly is exceptional. It is so nice to find a lounge with great drinks that is nice and relaxing without being overly trendy. Go and enjoy!

Couldn't leave this place quickly enough. Crowded, rip-off prices, snooty. And the interior is way over-rated. Just because you can afford to pay $12 for a beer doesn't mean you're willing to get robbed, especially when you can get the same thing for $4 across the street (or 10 other places within short walking distance). I really don't understand the fascination with this place, especially considering that there's so much else too choose from both in and around Grand Central.

Make sure you can keep up with a very crowded bar and you're set! Went here with coworkers during the summer and wouldn't recommend you do the same, unless they are your immediate peers...it just gets very very busy! The atmosphere was great, and it has an air of exclusivity since it is semi-hidden from the rest of Grand Central!

Went here with coworkers during the summer and wouldn't recommend you do the same, unless they are your immediate peers...it just gets very very busy! The atmosphere was great, and it has an air of exclusivity since it is semi-hidden from the rest of Grand Central!

Pros: ambience, location

Cons: very busy during happy hour

.

In the summer the outside area is a madhouse with all the singles covertly eyeing each other. There's live jazz in the evening but getting a drink at the one man bar is tough. Inside its intimate, classy and stately. Definitly old world feel about it but it can be jammed with commuters waiting for their trains. A big con is that even if half the tables are empty the hostess will not seat you until ur party arrives. One thing if you have a large group but i was one of TWO.. so there i was in heels waiting for my date to arrive not a seat to be had at the bar ... but half the tables are empty!!

This was my first time going to the campbell apartment, i have heard great things from other people. Not only was the staff absolutely stunning in their expensive uniforms, but the were welcoming, gracious, and friendly. The drinks on their menu aren't too expensive, basically same as most places. But they sure are delicious. The waitress was quick to help me pick out a delicious concoction to suit my tastes and she was right. I had a wonderful time, i couldn't ask for better service, drinks, ambience, everything. Such an enjoyabel experience.

It's like drinking in one of the period rooms in the Metropolitan Museum. A truly magnificent space with lots of centuries old handcrafted woodwork (esp. that ceiling!) and well designed lighting. Sure, you'll get a lot of Metro North commuters sprinting out to get their trains, but when it's not too crowded you can enjoy that transcendent feeling of being in the grand hall of an Italian renaissance estate as you sip your martini and look up and around...

Pros: Luxurious setting, Classy, Dress Code

Cons: Commuters, Crowds, Expensive

.

The location makes it a good place to rendezvous with friends, but then it is best to move on to another place. It is very crowed, the drink prices are through the roof, and most people seem to be there for one quick one and then jump on the next Metro North train home. The owners would probably like to see it develop as a "velvet rope" place, the patrons would rather see it as an inviting place to relax with a drink after work. Perhaps someday they'll be on the same page.

There are a lot of really nice bars in New York City. There are a good number of bars that will make good tasting classic cocktails. There are many bars that have some sort of dress code. But almost all high-end bars that have a dress code will:

a) Know the difference between nice, casual shoes and sneakers.
b) If they really feel that you have violated the dress code, find a way to let you know without making you feel like an ass.
b) Serve you anyway regardless of your dress, as long as your behavior is appropriate, and your money is good.

The drinks are decent, but they are certainly not the best place to get drinks in the city. They certainly don't merit the kind of pretension that this bar exudes.

I don't know why anyone possible gave a bad review to this place. First of all the drinks are excellent and unique. The staff is responsive and nice, and the bar is extremely well managed overall. Sure, it may be a little pricey, but if you want a $2 plastic cup of beer, go back to college and have a frat party. This is the coolest, nicest, most well run bar in Manhattan, hands down.

One of my smoker friends took me to C.A. last night. As we were entering, we passed a 'proper attire' sign. 2 of us were wearing jeans, scruffy boots and track tops; the hostess definitely looked us up and down disaprovingly, but did not say anything and let us in. It wasn't very busy, so I guess they did not want to pass up some sales. The space is fascinating, but dry and overly refurbished, in a tacky sort of way. The servers looked so pretentious in their black dresses and pearls and were very slow at paying us attention. Cigar and cigarette smoke was everywhere, it seemed like everyone felt obliged to chain smoke, since this is one of the last places where smoking is still somehow permitted. It's worth a look, but I'll be drinking elsewhere.

Some friends and I happened upon Campbell Apartment recently and loved it. The decor is beautiful, the vibe low key and romantic, and the drinks good. It's definitely not cheap, so be warned.

What happened to the new smoking laws? This place is absolutely gorgeous but it is ruined by the chain smokers that have sought this place as thier smoking den. The drinks are ridiculously expensive-$5 for a coke? $7 for an Amstel? $15 for scotch? The prices, smoke, bad bar snacks and limited space made this a very unenjoyable experience....

The decor is nice...it reminds you of a speakeasy...there are no windows to the outside, but the high ceilings and loft at least don't make you feel you're in a closet...The drinks are extremely expensive...my girlfriend ordered a glass of house red merlot and it was $13.00...We almost had a cow right there...the hostess/waitstaff definitely have an attitude problem...and you have to make a reservation to sit at one of the tables...

Once entering The Campbell, one is whisked back to the era of silk shatung cocktail dresses and civilized conversation. The setting is incomparable, the servers gracious and stylish, and the cosmopolitans are worth every penny -- even at $12. One wouldn't go on a bargain hunt, but then that's not the purpose of this most beautiful treasure of a bar.
