In reference to the two previous comments, I'm sorry you experience homophobia in your life, it's disappointing and regrettable. The Newsroom, however, I would not classify as "not gay friendly" or abusive to gay culture. I've been stopping through for years and been waited on by gay members of their staff. The servers are happy and some I've seen for years. I find it hard to believe a homophobic manager would hire gay employees. As for the food you brought in, it is a health code infraction to have outside open containers of food or drink inside a restaurant. I'm sure you were told bringing food inside a business specializing in providing food for others was not welcome. It wasn't done because your gay. There are more than a few gay bars around downtown meaning there are gay people in every restaurant; they have a wine list as long as your arm; this isn't "Brothers".

Pros: big patio at a busy corner, huge wine list

Cons: don't really have any

I went to the newsroom after a Vikings game with my partner from out of town. My partner placed a souvenir bucket with some popcorn leftover from a football game we just attended on one side of the table. All was going fine, the waitress was really nice and we ordered food and drinks. We'd been there for a while enjoying ourselves, and we held hands and were having a great time when the manager came up and literally yelled "
You can't have that (the popcorn) in this restaurant! It breaks health codes!" and he promptly walked away. I couldn't believe it. He embarrassed us and everyone around us. We got the check as fast as we could and left, totally humiliated and angry. Having dealt with homophobia enough in my lifetime, I knew that the manager did what he did to get us to leave. It worked! And I will never go back and I will spread the word to anyone who listens....don't bother going to the Newsroom in Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall if you believe in fairness and being treated as a equal human being.

This is a great restaurant, with delicious food, and a nice atmosphere. Fine dining with editorial entertainment on the walls! This is a perfect place for a nice dinner out on the town. The service was excellent and the drinks are spectacular too!

my friend and i were looking for a place to grab a bit the other night and i suggested stopping in there because i have been by in the summer time and always wanted to check it out. the summer is probably the only time you want to go, and only because you are sitting on a patio enjoying people watching and the heat. the inside of this place is chintzy. it's filled with tvs which made my stomach turn, though the real culprit for my nausia probably had more to do with the food. it's just bad. the dinner menu is wayyyyyy overpriced for what you end up eating. i didn't go for anything too meaty like the steaks or the burger (why are the sandwiches on a seperate menu??). instead i opted for a pasta dish. seriously, why spend 15 dollars for something that you could dump out of a lipton instant meals bag and heat up in your microwave? my companion wasn't impressed with his food and neither of us finished our meals. and it's not like you are paying for the ambiance, it's like tgi fridays in newsprint. there were a couple other tables, but mostly the staff just hung out looking bored and annoying. our server wasn't fast, wasn't very attentive and didn't have much personality: the only thing he actually did do was reinforce how annoying it was to be there. the place is lame.

GET THE WINGS AS AN APPETIZER. The dining area is interesting with a cool news room theme. Our server was great and the food was delicious and not too expensive.

My boyfriend and I wanted to try out the News Room since it's close to my apartment and on the trendy "Eat Street" of Minneapolis. I'd heard there was a good atmosphere.

When we got there, we were a little disappointed by the menu choices and had to ask for the sandwich menu (it comes separately). Why wouldn't they just put one on the table?

The server was flaky and when my boyfriend ordered a beer, she said "I think you should have a [insert beer name] because we're doing contest to see who can sell the most." My boyfriend was like "no, thanks...." It took her forever to get us waters and it wasn't even busy.

I chose a Spring Chicken Sandwich, which was pretty good. My boyfriend got one of their Kobe Beef burgers. He took about two bites before putting it down because it was gross. I tried it and it tasted funny to me, too. The fries were disgusting--you could taste the other food that had been cooked in the oil before them. When the waitress came to check on us, we said the food was Ok and she didn't even ask if there was anything she could do to improve it. She just walked away.

Overall, the service was poor, the food wasn't that tasty or special, and we left not wanting to go back. As we walked out, the hostess just stood there scowling, without even saying "thanks for stopping" or "have a good night!"

The breakfast menu is pretty small so it was tough to find something for my 3 year old. I had a ham and asparagus with goat cheese omelette and my daughter had the pancakes. While my omelette had a good taste some of the asparagus was a little undercooked and the pancakes were nothing to brag about. The service was terrible there were only three tables at the time and everything took forever even trying to pay the tab. Will NEVER go there again. And what's up with the ship in a news room???????

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice lunch at one of the outdoor tables. Knew nothing about this place until we walked by. The Cajun Popcorn appetizer was perfectly spiced, lightly battered, and came drizzled with a wonderful remoulade. Most renditions are way overspiced and hidden in thick soggy batter. Our sandwiches were also perfect. Nice balance of flavors. Mine included perfectly done fries, and my wife's included what looked to be homemade potato chips. Prices were reasonable. Service was very good, and looked to be at other tables as well. Although we didn't have any wine, the list looked very good (not just the usual suspects) and included a large selection by the glass.

I had breakfast on Sunday at the Newsroom. I agree with the previous reveiwer it should be Bad News. First, the host was aloof when I asked if I could sit at the bar for food. The bartender serving as a waiter was good. He was attentative and friendly but then not that busy. When my food I arrived (i ordered eggs, bacon, pots) the food wasn't that good. I mean for bacon and eggs and pay $9.00. I have to say the coffee is some of the best I have had in minneapolis. For breakfast the next day I went to Peter's Grill. Had the same, eggs, etc. for only $5.50 and it was alot better. Skip this place for breakfast. Pricey for not good food.

Pros: Good Service, Friendly Waiter

.

First impression of the restaurant were good. Busy, with a lively atmosphere.

Couple of things to point out: Good selection of beers.,but beware; tap beers only come in a small glass. The glass sizes resemble a European 1/2 pint.

We enjoyed the food, and the portions were quite big. HOWEVER, i would have to say that i have never experienced service like this in my life.

It took 10minutes after being seated before we had a drinks order taken and a further 10 before our food order. We received the bill from our server without being asked if we wished any desserts or coffees and also before she had even cleared our table.

Lastnight was the first time i had never left a gratuity for my server. By the conversations we could hear by our near by tables; they were also disgusted by her service.

Overall: Good food. Terrible service.

Overall... I had a good time. The food was excellent, and the service was fantastic. And the martinis... uh... FANTASTIC!!!

The only problem that I had, was that they didn't have my reservation, knowing that I put one in earlier in the week. It was for my wife's b-day and I know 12-15 people were going to be joining us. They (The Newsroom), corrected the problem by seating us anyway and took 5% off our tab. Which was given back (and then some) in the tip. So, I'd strongly recommend this place to anyone. But, I WOULD strongly advice, calling to confirm your reservation... if you make one!!!

Food, overpriced but good. Server was rude and put a party of 30 on one tab. I could overlook this and place blame on lack of serving experience; if only he were nice. Much better places to go downtown.

This is a great place for after work drinks. I recommend sitting in the outside patio area or the bar area. They have a low-priced happy hour menu of drinks and appetizers. I have tried several things on the menu and have enjoyed them all. It tops my list of bars in downtown minneapolis.

I went there for happy hour. We had drinks and tried two of their flatbreads. It was very tasty and I'm going back there tonight because I liked it so much. I haven't visited the bathrooms yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

OVERRATED. We went for a large group dinner recently and they had a limited menu. They tried to pass off hamburger as "shaved ribeye." It was HAMBURGER. Our server was inattentive and not very friendly. For our table of eight, our food came out over a 10 minute period - that's a long time to stagger food delivery. And I actually saw the manager tell an older couple to go outside and read the sign for directions on how to get into the side entrance, rather than direct them himself. The "sign" had two sentences on it.

This place is trendy. Food is average and comparable to any other sports bar. Prices for food is comparable to Chammp's but there is nothing fancy about the menu. The place is very trendy with a industrial/deco type of decor.

Drinks are about average price.

Service is OK but I've had better at Olive Garden.

The coolest thing about this place are the bathrooms, which are open and connected together by mirrors. Guys can see the girls and vice versa in the washing area. Kinda fun to see a woman unknowingly adjust her bra or fixing her makeup right in front of you... you get a good laugh.

The News Room is my new favorite restaurant in the twin cities. Even though the restaurant has an overwhelming news paper theme, it really is second to their outstanding service and delicious food. I have eaten at the news room for their amazingly bargain priced happy hour in the expansive outdoor seating, for a quick and quality lunch break sandwich, and a 10:30PM (long after most of the downtown restaurants have folded up their kitchens) sumptuous regular menu salad. Basically when ever I have gone, where ever I have been seated and whatever I have had to eat they have never failed to be quick, courteous, quality and enjoyable. I cant wait to try their weekend breakfasts!

...and it works!!! The amniance is innovative and they pull it off well. Three cheers!!! The last thing we need is another TGIFridays style decore, theres enough places doing that. The food is your standard burger, sandwich style choices but done to perfection. Not the typical "keep it bland so nobody is offended" sandwich so yes they (fear of fears in this state) may add a dash (a pinch of) SPICE!

What does it take to get a fresh sandwich around here? When limp tomatoes and wet rubbery lettuce begin to combine and form a completely different substance alltogether-that's bad news. On top of that our server was completely rude-why did I tip that ____? I mean, I couldn't get a refill to save my skin. No Go, if you ask me.

Visited this establishment on a Saturday around 5:30. Host seated our party of 6 and the server came over and said, "How long are you going to be here? We have a party at 8 that will need this table? Will you be done????" So, we move and she scolds the host in front of us! "He's new and doesn't know anything." This was the tip of the iceberg. Should have left. Order a chicken wrap sandwich, not a Lawry's Season Salt Wrap. Couldn't eat it and server asked 3 times if she could wrap it up. Everytime I said, "No I don't like this." Was not offered anything else and was not about to pay for something else. Ick, never again.

Mostly a place to be seen and to hang out for drinks after work or early on the weekend. Lots of look-at-me-drink, late-twenty-something, I love sushi bars too, account exec crowd. A glorified bar that serves decent food. I've been three times in last year or so with others, but I can't get into it. Maybe it's the crowd, maybe its the young and hip atmosphere that has become so banal in the upscale bar scene--I can't put my finger on it except to say I only go there with others who won't take no for an answer. The bar is pretty cool--a ship-shaped bar complete with rigging, and the curved walls are giant nostalgic newspapers. Check out the oh-so-shiek bathrooms with smoked windows that look into the other bathroom.

I have been here a few times now, and have always enjoyed myself. The pasta's are great. I strongly recomend the ravioli in vodka cream sauce. The mussels are the cream of the apps list. I have heard good things about the flat bread, but have not enjoyed it either time we tryed. The staff was kind and joked around with us. There are some hot guys behind the bar that makes the time to stay and have an after dinner drink worth it. The beer list is top notch, and the martini's are expencive, but STRONG. Over all a solid 8+

I've been a couple times and I had a good time, good service, good food, and excellent drinks. The drinks are pricey, but worth trying at least one. The appetizers and salads are really good, especially the goat cheese flatbread. I love the bathrooms with the mirrors you can see to the other bathroom through and the decorations - the bar shaped like a ship and the place covered in newspapers and flat screen Tvs. It's a nice uspcale place to watch a game with some drinks and appetizers.

2 friends and I met for drinks on a Sat. night. Good spot to meet and chat; easy to find seat and not too loud. "News" interior is clever, always something that I didn't see before. I really like the bar that looks like a boat and the bomb above the door. In spite of all the memorabilia, the place isn't cluttered or dusty. The beer selection is great with 80 beers from around the world. However $6.22 for a Hacker-Pschorr Weiss is spendy and the waitress had the personality of a warm bud light. I expressed interest their "drink all 80 beers club" and she failed to explain it until I practically begged her to tell me details. I will go back as it's a great location and I'd like to further investigate the beer list.

I expressed interest their "drink all 80 beers club" and she failed to explain it until I practically begged her to tell me details. I will go back as it's a great location and I'd like to further investigate the beer list.

Pros: beer selection, interior decorating

Cons: price, staff

.

If you are concerned about service dont bother going there. I've owned and managed a few restaurants in my life and this place must have a "unique" way of profiting... their staff dont get paid well, a personal friend has quit working there and 2 months later hasn't got the last check yet... their manager is the most unpolite and rude one I've ever encountered (maybe he needs a raise) whoever is in charge of the kitchen should seek anger management therapy (heard yells and tantrums from MY table) How long do they expect to stay in business??just one word about it TERRIBLE
