MetroRock is the first rock gym I went to in the Boston Area, and it's the one that keeps me coming back for more. Not only are the climbs long, but there are enough at different skill levels to suit everyone. If you're a beginner, there is plenty to do, and while you're hanging around you can watch the more experienced guys and get some tips. I'm not so big on their bouldering, as for right now, it's a little over my skill level, but once I'm a little more confident on that front, there will be enough challenging problems to keep me there for hours (days, weeks if they were open round the clock!) The staff there is awesome, and so is Gus the dog who hangs out in the lobby and is about the chillest dog ever!

I've been to both gyms, and when MetroRock first opened, I preferred it because it was newer. Over time I came to love Boston Rock Gym in Wouburn (eventhough it is further - although from the city, it takes about the same time 'cause of the speed difference between highway and city driving). The staff is friendlier more knowledgeable, the climbers are "real" enthusiasts, not just a bunch of preppy b-school grads who climb to be cool, and the routes are designed for training and fun. BRG also have a fantastic kids program and events package (I've had a couple of events there myself).

In the last year or so, the improvements made at BRG has first made it comparable (then superior) to MetroRock. If you live in Everett, I would suggest you go to MetroRock, but if you live even remotely north of the city or even right off of I-93, I say go to Boston rock gym.

MetroRock is the best climbing gym in the Boston area. It is staffed with knowledgeable rock climbers (people obsessed with the sport) who are friendly and helpful to new and veteran climbers alike. Their "intro" class was very helpful in both the technical aspects of climbing (rope work, harnesses, belaying, etc) as well as tips for climbing more efficiently.
