Three out of five stars. Food is a fair value, but presented somewhat inconsistently. When ordering a BLT, for example, you may have a perfectly- prepared, generously embaconed delight one time, then a crumbly, over- toasted disappointment with not- yet-ripe tomatoes the next.

I am a visitor to Elizabethton and was taken here many years ago. I recently returned and was so pleased to see that the food and service are as I remembered. The food is fresh and served quickly. The service is great and the crowd is certainly what you would expect if you know anything about Elizabethton. The deserts add to the good feeling you get when eating here. I am torn between the banana pudding and the peach cobbler when both are offered. It is truly a tough choice. You won't be disappointed when you eat here unless you are looking for fancy. It is just down right good food prepared the way it was meant to be.

I absolutely love this place. The prices are great and include dessert, such as banana pudding. They have the best chicken and dumplings!! However, certain foods are only available certain days, so you might be disappointed if you go on a day and your favorite isn't available.
PROS: great southern food
CONS: if you don't go early enough sometimes they run out

I just can't recommend the Southern Cafe highly enough. This restaurant is almost an historical fixture in Elizabethton. It's just a little hole-in-the-wall cafe, but the food is so good. If you're looking for real southern food, this is the place. They make a chicken casserole that melts in your mouth. The baked goods are amazing. I had a piece of carrot cake that was like a little slice of heaven. Don't dress up- this is a place where the flowers on the table are plastic, and the waitresses call you "honey." Have a cup of coffee and just savor the experience of real southern food and friendliness.
