Kittichai

★★★★☆
If you think great Thai food means orchids, sunken pool, attitude, expensive dishes and rude service, then this is the place for you. If you prefer authentic Thai food as well as authentic Thai hospitality, then go with other more impressive choices in Manhattan and Queens. Considering that one of the world's best Italian restaurants outside Italy can be found in Bangkok, we wonder why 60 Thompson could not do better.

The food at Kittichai was sublime. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. My wife had the vegetable stir fry and I had the pork tenderloin. We both ordered the Jasmine rice and Berry coolers. Literally, one bite in and we knew we were in foodie heaven. It was absolutely delicious. I usually go to great restaurants and enjoy the food but rarely do I absolutely love it. I did at Kittichai. The decor was fabulous, modern and serene. We went for lunch. Can't wait to go for dinner! As the rating says, run don't walk.

I got a 30% off coupon online and I couldn't wait to share with a bunch of my ladies. Kittichai is a gorgeous restaurant with an indoor pond with floating lotus and candles! I think the atmosphere is so romantic and zen. Unfortunately, a pond equals some mosquitos. Thankfully I told the waitress and the restaurant offered to buy us a bottle of spray for us.

So let's talk about their food. We got some beef salad and fried popcorn shrimp to start and they were excellent. But I have to say everything here is pretty small and pricey. Then we each got our own entree. I ordered the curry short rib and it was very creamy and the meat just fell apart; it was that tender! Did I mention you have to order the rice here? They only gave you a tiny bit too.

The dessert was good. We got the chocolate cake and we all shared. I was pretty full by the end and thanks God I got a 30% off coupon. Otherwise, I would feel robbed.

Went there for a friend's birthday a few days ago. The waitress asked if we're celebrating a birthday because she saw a wrapped gift and we said "yes" she said "ok". She didn't wish him a happy birthday nor did she put a candle on the desert. But that's not the problem. The problem was with the fish that we ordered. It was completely burned! We had to explain it to the waiter in detail that it was completely burned and the waiter was hesitant to take it back. After waiting another 20 min we were brought chicken, which was dry but eatable. The restaurant week special is a joke. We paired it with 3 glasses of wine and they brought out 1/5 of the glass all 3 times. The place is nicely decorated, but that's about it! It gets 2 stars for cool decorations and 1 star for food. I would not recommend!

I was always a fan of Kittchai...great service, great people. great food....and then fast forward to tonight. I am moving to Chicago in 2 weeks and I chose Kittichai as the restaurant of choice for one of my farewell dinners. Well I arrived tonight anxiously awaiting the delicious food, when I made the mistake of going to the restroom before I even looked at the menu. Turns out the first toilet I went in was gross, so i had to go into the other stall and as I opened the door I stepped into a little surprise. YEP...there was human poo on the floor which I stepped right in. I was not aware that I would have had to watch my step upon entering stall #2. I was totally grossed out and had to wash my Gucci heals in the sink. So I head back to the table to tell my friends and the waiter and then I headed to the front of the restaurant to tell the waitress. They quickly closed and cleaned the bathroom. I ended up staying to eat only to not even be given a complementary meal. Not that I expected it, but after stepping in human poo in the bathroom I would have expected to be treated like a queen for an evening. Upon leaving, I confronted the hostess who stated they can not control what customers do in their restroom....however they can control how they treat their paying guests who unexpectedly step in human poo in their restroom. I not only thought this was in poor taste, but I will NEVER STEP FOOT(no pun intended) into their establishment again and I would hope everyone who reads this never does either!!!!!

I went to Kittichai last night for restaurant week and had a great experience from start to finish. I got a glass of rose wine, while I waited for my table. I wouldn't reccommend the rose, but I had lichee martinis once seated and they were off the charts delicious and strong. :) We started with mussels in chili lemongrass broth, really good, a tad too spicy for me but my date was loving the chilis and the mussels were fresh and plump. My appetizers was A-MA-ZING! I am still thinking about it. Tuna tartare, really nice presentation, they give you these little pastry cups with peanut inside and then tartare is separate and the chili coconot sauce is separate you put it together yourself and eat each one as a perfect bite. Hello! Party in my mouth, what an interesting and wonderful flavor combo. For entrees we had seafood boulebaisse, which was pretty small and nothing to really write home about, but the short ribs in green curry sauce was sooooooooooo awesome. Dessert was incredible too, banana spring rolls with burnt honey ice cream, is a must have, and the flourless chocolate cake with fresh cream was pretty good too. And the cool vibe of the place makes for a great night out. Very friendly service too. I would go back in a second. This is def one of my favs now.

This bar is a reminder of why I left New York and couldn't be happier about that. If it weren't for my present company, the night would have been a complete loss. The drinks are very good, but they should be for $14 a drink. The hostess couldn't have been any ruder and let us know immediately that we were lucky to be allowed to spend our money there. We were moved 3 times from unreserved tables and even had our chairs taken from under us and added to reserved tables from which they were never a part. We easily spend 5xs as much as the people who took our tables, since they were there for 30 minutes each having a glass of wine or seltzer. Doesn't seem like a good business model to me. The majority of the crowd was old and weird as well. This place could be fun if you don't intend to sit and just want to be there for a quick drink. I would never go there again.

My husband took me here for a celebration dinner and it was fabulous. Tip for the top ladies, dress up as if your life depends upon it! The decor and design of the restaurant is beautiful and the service in the restaurant itself was pretty good (though they do that irritating clear your partners plate before you are both done, which drives me insane!). We started with drinks at the bar, the cucumber and kiwi cocktail was out of this world, the bar tender who served us had zero service skills, no please or thank you, kept us waiting for 10 minutes. Once past the retarded bar tender, the food was amazing, we had Tuna Tartare and carpaccio starter, the tuna was served in miniature pastry cups with almonds and a spicy sauce - sounds disgusting but it was amazing! For mains we had the Hake (very subtle flavor - almost too subtle) and the chicken which were both really good. This place is extremely glamorous and the clientele reflects this. If you really like your date, treat them to dinner here!

A party of 5 decided to go. The decor is very nice and we had to make reservations in advance. Getting the tasting menu (60 a person, and you get all the dishes listed, about 14), we were warned, it's a LOT of food. It was. 1st course was the chicken and coconut relish on rice crackers. Lots of flavor. The fish cakes were good too. the hamachi sashimi was very buttery and melted in your mouth. next was the banana blossom, chocolate babyback ribs, and beef salad. The beef salad was good, and the banana blossom had a good acidity to it. both were cold dishes and very tasty. The coco ribs I liked but I personally prefer the ones from sapa which had more of a sweetness to it. These were more savory and a hint of that coco bitterness that I'm not too keen on. Others in my party disagree but it comes down to a matter of taste. third was tiger prawn, sea bass, and gai-lan. Sea bass was a bit on the done side, but very tasty. The glaze had a crisp and sweet. Tiger prawn was great and came with yellow watermelon. It took on a totally different and better flavor when eaten together. Gai-lan was good but standard for me as I cook and eat it often. Fourth was pineapple green curry short ribs, chicken with long beans, and morning glory. The morning glory was full of flavor but on the salty side. It was great over a bowl of rice. Short ribs were great but a bit on the dry side. Smaller pieces instead of huge chunks would have been better I think, The chicken was good too. The spices used were great. For dessert the chocolate cake was so moist it melted in your mouth. The banana spring rolls were great with the ice cream. The banana held up pretty well and it wasn't oily at all like some other places i've had it. Overall, it was pricey, as we each had about 2 drinks, coming out to 112 a person after everything. We left completely stuffed though. When we left, we still had enough that it provided 4 of us a decent sized lunch too.

My friends and I went to Kittichai a few weeks ago for a mid-week "Girl's Night". The decor was beautiful and we were seated promptly. However, despite the over-the-top presentation of some dishes, the food was just ok. Many of the dishes were uninspiring and in some cases, over done. The chocolate baby back ribs tasted like the chef literally just poured some hershey's syrup over them and served it. Chocolate can also be savory and I thought he would go that route, but apparently not. We ordered the side of Asian Mixed Vegetables and the side of Tofu and it turned out they were virtually the same dish - both with tofu and vegetables despite being described differently. The only difference was the color of the sauce. They tasted identical. The Baked Chilean Sea Bass came with some sort of reduction or glaze over it which was far too sweet. It was sticky, sweet and salty. I reached for my water immediately. For a restaurant that likes to tout itself as having a notable chef, the food was definitely not notable. I do not normally write reviews, but for a restaurant to charge such prices and have such rave reviews is mind-boggling. Don't bother going here unless you happen to like eating subpar food in a lovely setting.

This lounge is great. Good music and good drinks. The mixologist there made the most amazing cocktail. It's definitely for the 30+ demographic in New York who want to look good and chat with friends while enjoying the ambience and drinks. Great locale for a celebration with 5-10 friends.

Don't be fooled by the 5 star rating you see at the top of this page. In the past year, 15 people have reviewed Kittichai. The average rating for these reviews turns out to be 2.2 stars. My boyfriend and I took another couple from out of town to Kittichai for dinner and we were all disappointed. Despite having reservations we waited an inordinate amount of time for our table. Once seated, we ordered several appetizers and entrees and hated most of them. We go to Thai restaurants all the time and this was simply the worst. We do not mind expensive prices for good food, but Kittichai isn't worth it. It is way overpriced for what it is. The decor is beautiful, but in NYC you can find nice decor and "scenes" in tons of other places that have better food.

I am never going back to this restaurant!! We initially were really very excited to eat at Kittichai for our large birthday party, because of all the positive reviews. However, upon our arrival the host was very rude and disrespectful. The food and drinks were mostly overpriced - nothing special. One would think that the atmosphere would have made up for it...even the atmosphere could not compare to that of other restaurants . After spending about $700 for our meal, we wanted to share some special cupcakes a friend brought for the birthday boy and girl. We were very dissappointed when the management was very unaccomodating, by not allowing us to eat the cupcakes and threatening to charge us an additional $50 if we did so. Can't believe they have such bad customer service that they would penalize you by charging for every little stupid thing... If you don't like attitude with your dinner, don't eat here.

Unless you're trying to impress a few golddigger women with buying them rounds of drinks in a cool atmosphere, for a place to eat, you'd be better off elsewhere. The food is just fair and WAY over priced. I hate any Asian restaurant that charges $27 for a main dish and makes you pay an extra $3 for rice. I think it was $16 for a Grey Goose. Don't forget, you pay hotel prices when eating here. If you really love Thai food try going to Pongsri Thai Restaurant at 106 Bayard St. It's the best Thai restaurant in the NYC hands down! The atmosphere at Pongsri won't get you the girl.... but the food will!

The only good thing about this resturant was the host. I think his name was Jaime? Don't know, but he was the most pleasant gentleman I ever met. Went with a friend on the early side one Friday evening and was pleasantly surprised to find out about their $30 prix fixe menu that's valid from 5:30 to 7:00. The space is gorgeous and we found the service to be very pleasant, polite and professional. The food was very flavorful and beautifully presented as well. I would very much recommend this place and will keep it in mind when I have out-of-towners here for a visit.

We went here after going to a restaurant near the area. It was a nice relaxed lounge with good music in the background. Was able to get seating for most of the evening. The bartenders were great and attentive. It's a good spot to bring your date to after a nice meal. Nothing but positive things to say.

The bartenders were great and attentive. It's a good spot to bring your date to after a nice meal. Nothing but positive things to say.

Pros: Great Lounge

Cons: None

This review is in response to the review below mine called "rude, rude, rude" . I booked a party here and the service was excellent and the food catered by Kittichai was fabulous. Clearly you don't bring your own cake and utensils to a bar unless first speaking with management....i mean come on what is this a beach family barbaque....it's very clear to me that this person wanted to have an upscale party without the price tag. Wake up and smell the catering etiquette. You wanna play then pay up! Sorry don't mean to be rude, rude, rude but lets call a spade a spade....you were being cheap. I think this is a great lounge with great drinks and food and i hate for it's reputation to go downhill because someone was too cheap to consider what the proper etiquette is to having a party.

I went to Thom Bar tonight for my friend's birthday. It's been a LONG time since I've encountered such rude, unhelpful, and ethically questionable service. First of all, she made reservations earlier in the week on the phone, and was only informed when she arrived that she had to open a tab for all 40 people on her credit card! Of course she was stuck since she'd already told all of her friends to meet there, and had to put down her card.

I brought a birthday cake for her - one I'd baked myself - and as I was about to light the candles the manager ran up and told me there would be a $5/person fee for bringing in outside food. He then went on a rant about "outside utensils" because I'd brought paper plates and plastic forks (because I hadn't wanted to trouble the wait-staff). While I (somewhat) understand the policy, the way the manager (a short, self-important Asian guy with glasses) spoke to me was unbelievably smug and insulting. He could have been polite and empathetic - instead, he yelled at me and was incredibly condescending. Enforcing the policy itself was questionable, but my treatment was downright unforgivable. With all of the other great places to go downtown, do yourself a favor and skip Thom Bar.

Pros: There might have been some things here, but I was too disturbed by the cons to notice.

Cons: Unbelievably rude service - managers are supposed to make sure customers have a good time, not abuse them.

Average food and bad service. The place had a "cool wanna-be" attitude. Our waiter acted like he was doing us a favor by answering questions we had about the food. When the food arrived it was nothing special - mediocre curry and overcooked fish. The only positive thing was the decor. They had a nice pool with floating candles, and tables weren't too close to each other. Will not go back.

The food & wine was very average for the price. In addition, the service was terrible. Go to Tao or China Grill. You'll spend the same money and get much better foods, service, etc.

Went for lunch, decor is great, food was decent. Glasses and utensils were stained. Were asked if we wanted rice to accompany our meal and we said no, but they brought out two orders of rice anyway and then charged us for them. It took a ridiculously long time for them to clear our empty plates, and then another ridiculously long time to bring the check, and since this is lunch during a weekday I had to get back to work, and then they brought the wrong check. Overall, eh.

I went, I saw and I had a horrible meal. The funny part about the dinner was that we where rushed by the waiter. I don't mind paying for good authentic food, but I've been to hole in the wall joints in park slope Brooklyn that would wipe the floor with this place when it comes to good tasting food.

If your taking a date, the decor is nice and that's where it ends. At the end, shes going to ask why you liked this restaurant in the first place... good luck answering that one.

The service was excellent, but the food was beyond dissapointing. I have never written a review before, but I feel the need to since I was so uninspired. With all of the hype and excellent reviews, I expected the food to be at least decent. Unfortunately, the food was subpar. My friend and I each ordered appetizers and entrees, and not one of the dishes was tasty. The beef appetizer was gritty and tasted like sand, the shrimp appetizer had only two shrimps and a fishy flavor, the chicken had very little flavor and unappealing presentation, and the beef dish was just okay. This wasn't even a mediocre meal, it was just bad. And getting the check for almost $100 ( just for lunch) seemed like a shock after what we had just consumed. I'm sure exactly why people like this place...perhaps they are paying more attention to the elegant decor than the food.

We made dinner reservations through OpenTable. The decor is really nice and very romantic. The food isnt bad. I would recommend going there and get the $30 prefix meal. You get a choice of appetizer, a main meal and dessert. Just make sure you get there before 7pm and double check your bill.

The staff is nice but very quiet and a bit weird. I think they have too many people working at each table. 1 waiter would leave a set of forks and knives at our table for our meal. About 2 minutes later, another waiter would come over and take it away when we haven't even used the utensils yet.

As for our bill, it was someone else who calculated our bill on the computer rather than our own waiter. That's what caused the mix up on our bill and them over charging me. I had to sit for 15 minutes and wait for them to correct the bill.

Even if they do make some killer cocktails (open up your wallet by the way - but heck this is NY) - I would not recommend this bar to anyone for the simple reason that it is closed for private events so frequently. The chances you will go out here for nothing are extremely high. Out of the 4 attempts I made I have found them closed 3 times. I think they should just close it to the public altogether and use it only for private event rental - at least this way you don't get the false impression you can actually have a drink here.

Why? Why do people crowd up this place? Yes, this place has an awesome decor, but the fusion food sucked big time. They overdid the fusion part. Sadly, our favorite dish was the fried rice in the hollowed-out pineapple, and this is despite ordering many of their "signature" dishes.

We came for my birthday......and my friends apologized for that after.

I am a hotel concierge and received an invite from Kittichai to dine with a guest. Let me start by saying that this was an amazing experience! From the tasty, beautifully prensented food to the lovely decor to outstanding service...Seating was prompt..waitress was very friendly and professional..They make fantastic Mango Martinis and the grilled crispy rock shrimp marinated in sugar tamarind sauce is to die for!! I strongly recommed this restaurant!

this was the absolute worst service i've experienced in a long time. we had a late dinner reservation for 10:00PM for a birthday party. we arrived on time & were not seated for over an hour. when we complained, the hostess & the manager really could not care less. in fact they were downright bitchy, saying they couldn't just throw out the other diners... to which my response is: then why take reservations at all if you can't honor them??? i understand waiting a little bit for a reservation, but this long was unacceptable- & it was already late night! & the bad attitude on top on that was unnecessary. they finally agreed to comp our drinks, but only after we complained loudly numerous times & started to get testy (out of starvation as well as annoyance). we finally were seated & served dinner at 11:30PM, & by that point we were too ravenous to even notice what the food tasted like.

my boyfriend and i went on a thursday night to check out what the hype was all about. we didn't make reservations, so when we got there around 8pm, the hostess told us that it would be about an hour wait. she was right. we waited exactly an hour before we were seated at a table. it was nice though, i had couple martinis - lychee and thai tea - which were both really tasty but not strong at all. we ended up ordering the duck and some kind of salad to start off, which is not on the online menu on their site. i don't recommend getting either one of those. the duck appetizer was $20 and the other salad was so spicy and herby that i almost had heartburn from the moment i had a bite. as for the entree, i ordered the chilean sea bass, which literally melts in your mouth and my bf ordered the porkchops, which was totally delicious also, but not seen on the online menu. overall, it was good. it got really loud at times, to the point where i couldn't hear my own bf from across the table. i would definately check out lunch or their pre-fix dinner menu..when it's not so crowded or loud. i give the place an A-

The ambiance is simply superb, with colorful fabrics that create a warm, romantic environment. Service is attentive and the food is the best Thai we have tasted in New York City to date. This is a great spot for special occasions or anytime you want to impress--or be impressed.

Pros: Ambiance, food

Cons: A little pricey for Thai food, but worth it

I certainly can't agree with the editorial description that this is the "city's best Thai." The cool decor is matched neither by the food, nor the service. We were kept waiting 40 minutes for our reserved table, and then placed under an air duct blowing freezing air onto our party (this was in January!). Our table was pretty small (in fairness, they warned us about this when they moved us away from the air duct), and pretty crowded with dishes. There was little or no attempt to clear away dishes we had finished with, and no offer of clean plates for our entrees. The service seemed long on attitude and short on competence. Although some dishes (for example, the beef salad) were impressive, they generally fell well short of an acceptable standard. To illustrate, our shrimps were overcooked, and whatever delicate blend of herbs and spices had gone into our chicken and cashew nuts was completely masked by a gooey sickly sauce. We decided to skip dessert and will not be returning.

A friend and I went here last night and we waited forever to see our waitress. When we asked the host if we had a waitress he took the menus out of the hands of the people he just sat and gave them to us. When she did appear we were immediately asked for a card to open a tab. I noticed throughout the night that people around us kept coming and going as they weren't getting service and there was serious lag time btwn seeing our waitress throughout the night. When we asked for the bill it took her 10 minutes to come back and was holding the card we originally gave her - without the bill. My friend gave her another card and we ask to split it. Never did we see an itemized bill. We saw that our bill looked high for 3 drinks each and 2 plates of apps. We asked for an itemized bill which took another 10 mins and that she slammed down on the table. We noticed that a 20% gratuity had been added and we were only 2 people. we never saw the whole bill. When we asked for the manager he came over and was so incredibly rude to us. Speaking to us like we were 5 yr olds and never once could explain why the 20% was added and never told us that he agreed that we should have seen the full bill in the beginning before she took another card. Both my friend and I have worked in restaurants and have seen shady people doing stuff like this but never would a manager take their side. Not cool. Glad we didn't tip her double bec she sucked, didn't deserve her 20% and the place was totally not worth the money.

Rock shrimps and cocoa powdered ribs for appetizers - out of this world! Chilean sea bass that melts in your mouth and a jasmine flan for dessert that transported me to a different world. We expected a lot with this trendy SoHo establishment and were not disappointed. As dozens of other restaurant goers competed for the same Satruday evening experience , we experienced a bit of a wait, but our hostess had the mostess and came to our table, sat down with us delivering a smile, some laughs and excellent food recommendations. Service at all levels was outstanding. We simply did not want to leave the luxury of the experience, which explains why we had a bit of a wait, apparently no one else wanted to leave either.

Food at kittichai are better. compared to other Thai fusion such as Vong or Spice market. However, the services can be horrible if you go there with a date and have the same female server who waited our table. I'm not sure if it's actually her STRATEGY for getting good tip or else, but she was trying to flirt with my boyfriend the whole time we were there, especially when she told us the special. She TOTALLY ignored my presence, like i wasnt there. All she did was eye candying my boyfriend which was EXTREMELY inappropriate. Usually we would leave at least 20%-30% tip for an average service but that day left only 15%. I actually think she did NOT DERSERVE ANY TIP at all, but I feel bad for other fellow waiters who had to share tip with her that day. So if you want good food but dont mind a WAITRESS TRYING TO FLIRT with your man during the meal, go for it!

This is currently my favorite restaurant in NY. The food is unlike anything in the city. The ambience is fantastic. The food, atmosphere, and service all complement each other perfectly, and the result is a totally unique dining experience. I have been here at least 10 times. The Coconut Galangal soup is fabulous, as is the Hanger steak and the Tuna Tartare. Check this place out.

My parents came to visit and I took them to Kittichai, along with my 16 yr old brother who is extremely hard to please. Although he didn't understand the menu, he loved what he ordered. The food was fantastic and service impeccable! The setting was beautiful. I was a little annoyed that our table was in the corner in the restaurant when we had an earlier reservation. My mom didn't mind, but dad wanted to sit by the pool in the middle of the restaurant. Overall, I highly reccommend this restaurant.
