Q quarter century ago I was introduced to this charming refugee of the 18th century. My fiance and I were planning our wedding when she announced we had to visit Parker Button. You walk in past a glass counter and turn to see shelves reaching 10 feet or more high with thousands of boxes. Each box had 3 to 5 buttons attached to the front allowing the client to see all the sizes available at a glance. Entire catagories I had believed no longer made were there: bone, rhinestone, faceted glass (jet!!), even scrimshaw. after you picked the buttons you needed the ageless fellow at the counter would help you with finding the feathered trims, carnival masks or other hard-to-find notion you were looking for.
They have moved to a sleek new home (the Jenkins Arcade has long ago been razed) but they still help intrepid Pittsburghers who refuse to "settle" for that sewing notion that isn't "just right." Bless them. gg/
