Melting Pot is a wonderful dining experience, and can't be a lot of fun when with the right people. I HIGHLY recommend going with someone who has been before, they will know how things work and what items to purchase to not over spend.

It is pricey, you're paying for atmosphere, experience and what I'm sure is a super high electricity bill. Order the right things, and you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

This is NOT a good restaurant for families/kids. The atmosphere is best suited for dates/going with friends. Kids will get antsy ( as it's usually a 2-3 hour meal) and probably hurt themselves on the hot plates.

As for the people complaining they have to "cook their own food", well, that's the point! It's fondue. If you want food prepared when it comes to you, don't go to a fondue restaurant.

Do give this place a try, the food is delicious and it can be a lot of fun.

I knew what I was getting into with the whole fondu thing so no surprise there. The greeting was warm and friendly. Our waitress started out being helpful. Things went downhill from there.

It's alot of money for the type and quantity of food you are getting. Our waitress stopped checking on us after she served us our diner entree. After being there for 2 1/2 hrs and not even being able to do the dessert part, we ended up having to get the mgr. She did take a little off our bill and sent us home with dessert. That was the part we ALL were looking most forward to! So we all missed out on that experience.

No way, shape or form worth the time or money for cheese dipped apples and bread and salty medioker at best cooking sauce for some very common meat, chicken and veggies.

Wish I would have made a better choice at spending my $300! Will NEVER do that again. Such a disappointment.

I love the melting pot and try to get there a couple times a year.

I see so many people angry that they had to cook their own food. It is a shame you didn't know what fondue was, but that is part of the fun.
WARNING: don't go to MP unless you want fondue.

The only way you are spending $100/person is if each person has their own bottle of (nice) wine. This is possible, but most people who drink like that know what they are getting into.

I have been to plenty of restaurants that add gratuity to parties of 6 or more. I don't really like it, but MP is not the exception to the rule.

I love the food. I always get the chef salad because I love the dressing. All of the cheese fondues are great. The entrees are wonderful and every dessert is to die for. I really like to do the peanut butter and chocolate one, but substitute dark choc.

If you want to make it cheaper, but still enjoy all of teh taste, you can portion the entree for 1 and split it between 2 people. That is what my wife and I always do because we (she) can't finish all of the courses otherwise. Even cheaper still: you can just get cheese, dessert, and a drink.

Some people really, truly prefer mcdonalds or golden corral, and I can understand that, but for the rest of the melting pot is first rate.

Who wants to go out to do all of the work? This seems akin to the proliferation of tip jars at carryout places. Quite frankly, this place is an exasperation of today's do -it-yourself motif and I wonder how many people really get sick from undercooked food. I agree with the other poster that, while it is not illegal, we should be expected to forfeit an extravagant tip for an establishment that is built on the customer doing the work.

Definitely do not recommend this place.

I eat at the melting pot on a regular basis. I like the food a lot and am shocked by Kewal's review. He was most off base on the price. The highest price of any four course meal that I have found is $41 per person. That $41 takes you through the cheese appetizer, salad, an entree selection of various meats including lobster, NY strip, marinated chicken, etc. (unimited vegi's also), and the chocolate fondue dessert that is absolutely incredible. Kewal was also way off on the "blandness"....The reason there isn't much room on the table is they give you at least a half dozen sauces, which are full of flavor.

I took my family of six for dinner since I had heard that Melting Pot of Columbia is an unusual place to eat.Concept of cooking your own food can be exciting though it is unusual for a restaurant. Whatever, the whole set up of cooking is done in a very congested and a tight space, the boiled cooked food in broth by yourself is peculiarly bland. The menu prices are extremely high, unacceptable and unsatisfactory. On top of the outrageous menu prices there is an additional built in mandatory 18% tip without the knowledge of the customers which is an unethical and a criminal thing to do.
The menu prices are intentionally misleading and the final bill is padded with lots of extra items based on each person.Dinn er is divided in four parts and each part is divided intentionally into separate prices so that you end up paying upward of $60-$100 per person, once you are inside the restaurant.
At the start, appetizer bread and cheese is good to start with but after that all you do is to cook yourself in an unsafe and a congested environment and then eat tasteless boiled vegetables or meats. Space on the tables is not enough for two electrical hot plates which malfunctioned twice and is dangerous.
Actually this place needs to be reported to the Howard county health Department so that they should check it out for safety violations and may be this place needs to be shut down before any customer with small children is hurt with an accident thru the boiling hot plate installed in a very tight place.
All that pain and tasteless food at an upward of $60 per person dinner is no way acceptable and just stay away.

... but the rave reviews stop there. I was really looking forward to trying the Melting Pot. I had always heard such good things about it. When we finally did go, the decor was nice, the service staff was amazing. And the dessert was good.

The cheese appetizer was pretty good also. Although I would think a better variety of veggies would be nicer. The main course was mediocre at best. Maybe it's just me - but I thought the whole idea of going out to eat was so that someone else would cook my food for me? We had a selection of meats that included chicken, shrimp, pork, duck, and sirloin. We cooked the meat in a vegetable broth, which lended to each meat a peculiar taste.

For the amount of money you spend going out to eat there, I'd rather just pocket the money and stay home and cook.

PROS:
CONS: cooking your own food!
