I work near this pet store and have cats, a dog, and three aquariums. I've been keeping freshwater fish for about five years now. So as you might guess, it would be really convenient for me to buy supplies at Tradewinds instead of driving out of my way to go to another store.

A couple of months ago, I went to Tradewinds looking for a copper-free fish food, figuring that an aquarium specialty store would have more selection than the local Petsmart. (I keep freshwater shrimp and snails that are sensitive to the copper additives in regular fish food.) The person behind the counter clearly had no idea what I was talking about. Rather than looking at ingredient lists and helping me find the right food, she handed me a bottle of tap water conditioner--which does not remove copper or heavy metals from the water, anyway!

I took a look around the place and noticed the condition of the fish tanks. Any aquarium store is going to have fish deaths and disease outbreaks now and then (just nature of the business unfortunately), so seeing a few dead fish that haven't been netted out isn't unusual. But seeing rotting fish carcasses on the floor of most of the aquariums (with what appeared to be a nasty case of ich or fungal infection) was alarming. Even Petsmart's stock doesn't look that bad. I expect a lot more from a store that supposedly specializes in aquariums. The employees were not helpful or knowledgeable, and the conditions were deplorable.

I also discovered that they sell kittens--not adopt them out, but sell them. These are just regular stray/homeless kittens who get one round of shots and then become merchandise for the first available buyer. I mentioned my Tradewinds experience to a friend who is a veterinary technician at a local cat-only hospital, and she told me that recently a client of her office brought in a kitten he bought from Tradewinds. When the client purchased the kitten, he noticed it had a limp so he took it to the vet. It turned out that this kitten had a broken leg, and Tradewinds had either not noticed, or not bothered to take the kitten for treatment.

Again, I wish I could support this business because it's so convenient to where I live and work, but I will never give Tradewinds a cent of my money.

Tradewinds Aquarium and Pet Center is a really neat pet store. The store is pretty large and full of really great pet merchandise. They have aquariums set up with really cool fish and other sea life. They sell pets as well as supplies. The prices are usually pretty competitive and parking isnt a problem. They have a really nice selection of pet supplies and everything you could need to set up your own aquarium and maintain it.
