The staff at Breakaway is courteous, patient, and knowledgeable, and the training programs are top-notch. I have never been "talked down to" or anything of the sort...and I have brought in bikes ranging from $100 beaters to "$2400 racers."

Breakaway is easily the best shop in the city of Philadelphia. No one else offers the range or quality of bikes, top notch staff and service, or the flippin' sweet RPM classes. Seriously, if you race bikes or just want to boost your fitness Breakaway and RPM classes are a surefire method to help you out. The prices are reasonable, mechanics knowledgeable and fast, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. Truly a great shop for anyone who loves bikes.

I chose to sign up for their RPM classes in the winter of '08, and holy freaking cow did I improve! The coaches there, particular Rich and Joe, were simply outstanding, very knowledgeable, and I really felt like they weren't talking down to me. Some shops, particularly one out in Manayunk, has a similar sort of settup, but there it's all about stroking your ego. At Breakaway, they don't make pretensions. They treat you like an adult, but at the same time, you don't get lost in all the technical jargon--'watts this' and 'kilojoule-grams' that. And the mechanics Jonas and Shawn were always more than willing to help whenever I had a problem after class. They'd stay late, tighten my headset or adjust my shifting. They literally would drop what they were doing to change a flat that'd I'd gotten on the trainer. And they only charged for the tube. They were up to date on all the recent tech that I'd read about in cyclingnews when I'm supposed to be doing my day job. Shawn has to be about the friendliest guy I've ever met. And most of the time they did the small jobs pro bono, and always right away. They never once made me feel stupid, even though when it comes to mechanical workings of the bike, I certainly am that! Breakaway is just an absolutely fantastic shop. I've seen some crazy high end triathletes in there, and the shop is just as friendly to them as they are to the unkempt hipster on a rusted track bike from the 70s. There is *NO* pretension or favoritism or any of that. Yes, flat fixes are 15 bucks, but really that's only 10 dollars for service. I suspect rent is high there, and after all they (hopefully) pay their team a decent living wage during a freaking recession. I can't emphasize this enough. Breakaway Bikes is the NUMBER ONE shop in all of Philadelphia, period full stop.

It would take me quite a few pages to sum up my experience with this shop. I will summarize it....

They are reasonably priced for the area, but the labor can cost next to nothing, and if you get nothing back, you over paid.

They do not give you the courtesy of returning calls or emails.

Their mechanics talk a good game, but do not know what they are doing.

They tried selling me parts that I didn't need claiming that they would fix a problem I had. That problem was caused by their work (they pushed a pin on the chain too far in).

They take far too long for labor.

This is the worst shop i have ever been in. Bar none.

If you have money to burn and feel like paying twice as much as other shops for labor and other fees, then Breakaway is your shop. These people charge way too much to fix a flat, push the accessories on you, and talk down to you if you can't explain the inner workings of your bike in 100% pretentious jargon.

Not only that, the one shaggy hipster-dude who works there suggested that my frame wasn't properly welded together, and he could do me the favor of kicking it with his foot to see if it can withstand the force. Yeah dude, I brought my bike in so you can BREAK IT!

The same bro "fixed" my girlfriend's bike (replacement back wheel that was stolen). She walked in with functioning front brakes, and walked out with loose and disconnected ones. The guy's response? "That's how they made those back then." He wanted to CHARGE HER to fix the brakes that he messed up.

Yeah, the Rittenhouse folks with the $2400 bikes purchased from the shop probably get perfect service, but anyone who brings in anything from a department-store bike to a beater is made to feel like crap for riding such a sub-prime bicycle.

My advice? Leave this place to the rich and fancy folks in that part of town, and take your ride to Philadelphia Bikes on Broad Street. A fixed flat costs $5 and there's no pretension.

It's interesting to read such opposing reviews. I had top-rate experience with the staff at Breakawaybikes. Being a novice at the sport, I found the staff extra friendly, patient and helpful. They didn't overwhelmed me with their credentials and cycling glories, like another bike store I went to. Instead, I got the sense that the service was about me. The staff didn't push the accessories and worked within my budget. In the end, I got a better quality bike for less.

I have bought several bikes from Breakaway. I started with getting a couple of kids bikes for my two sons. The staff were always so friendly and really enjoyed helping the kids get started and excited about the bikes. It made for a real enjoyable family experience. That was four years ago. We since bought my older son a bike. I decided to get back to racing this year and Joe helped get set up on a gorgeous racing machine. He did an excellent job fitting the bike for me and specing out the component accesory package. I can't imagine going anywhere else for my bike needs.

I inquired with Breakaway by phone regarding renting a bicycle while visiting Philadelphia. I found the owner both rude and inconsiderate. I would never patronize such a business - there are just too many alternatives where I can find better service.

THE OWNERS DONT CARE, ARE SLOPPY, AND YOUR $6K bike WILL FALL APART. THEY'LL MAKE A PROMISE, AND NEVER KEEP IT....JUST GO TO BIKE THERAPY. THESE GUYS ARE THE WORST FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. THERE MECHANIC JONAS IS GOOD THOUGH; HE SHOULD BE WORKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE.......DONT GO, DONT EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME, ASK AROUND, BT IS GREAT....AND DONT BOTHER WITH THE YUPPIE OVERPRICED CADENCE....CLOWNS....ONLY THE TRUE CYCLISTS GO TO BT.

I was treated rudely in this shop not once, but twice.
The man helping me might have had a bad day the first time, but the second time was outrageous. I was in for a simple tune up and got lazy and surely service. Funny how he perked up for the guy who just bought a $2400 racer. Great service if you have the money I guess - not the spirit of a bike shop I want to return to.

Breakaway has a huge selection of bicycles. They carry all-terrain bikes, kids bikes, comfort bikes, hybrid bikes, cross bikes, road bikes and more. They have a really nice store very organized and clean. They also have a huge variety of parts and accessories on sale. Their helmet selection is excellent. The prices are pretty good and the employees are all cyclists who are very willing to help and answer questions. The parking isnt usually a problem either.
