I was a counselor the first year of girl sessions in August. That was probably 1961. The following 2 years I was the counselor in charge of the youngest age group living in what is now the "historic rock cabins". Checking the unit late at night with a full moon brightening the landscape was one of my favorite activities. The first summer brought changes in how camp operated. Ron Kinnamon and I have talked in later years about putting partitions in the restrooms to meet the greater modesty of the girls. We sang a lot, especialy in the dining hall and the craft house was always full during the day. The counselors all had 'camp names'. Mine was Sunny. The identical twins were Doodle and Bug. On night-off for some counselors the kitchen was the place to meet and visit. There was an open kitchen rule for us and we used boxes and boxes of oranges and lemons to make pitchers of lemonaide. We also had use of the motor boats for skiing during rest period. It must have cost a lot to allow all of that.for counselors every day During the years I worked there there was only one session for girls for two weeks after all of the boys' sessions. I went to work full time as a YMCA professional after college graduations and worked until I left for graduate school at George Williams College. Those years have wonderful memories for me and Camp Grady Spruce was part of that.

Camp grady spruce is simply UNBEATABLE. They have sailing, archery, riflery, cannoeing, waterski'ing, wake boarding, slaloming,knee-boarding, great hiking areas, outdoor living skills program, arts and awesome crafts-rockets-(oh yeah you heard me!),horseback riding, awesome views, a 'pool' (closed off section of the lake), 2 outdoor chapels, a store, teatherball, and much more. One of the coolest parts though was how many international people were there. In my cabin alone there was a person from Russia, people from northern Mexico, also just in my cabin there were people from around Texas and from around the U.S.A. It is a good deal price wise also. This is the official list of what they have-
SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Adventure Programs, Arts & Crafts, Backpacking, Canoe Trips, Ceramics/Pottery, Challenge/Rope Courses, Environmental Ed, Horseback/Western, Leadership Training, Outdoor Skills, Rappelling/Climbing, Sailing, Swim Instruction, Team Building, Waterski, Wilderness Camping, Wake Boarding, Barefoot Skiing, YMCA Raggers/Leathers Program, Counselor In Training Program

GENERAL ACTIVITIES: Archery, Basketball, Camping Skills, Canoeing, Dance, Fishing, Hiking, Kayaking, Nature Study, Religion, Riflery, Soccer, Softball, Swim Recreation, Theater, Tripping, Volleyball, Blobbing, Model Rockets, Campfire Cooking, Climbing

Camp Grady Spruce is a beautiful camp ground. They have cabins to stay in a lake to play in and a couple of hiking trails. It is a wonderful place to have fun with family and friends.

this place is great! it's a YMCA camp but I remember going with a group from my school when I was in elemenary school. The camp is always clean and you can't beat the location of beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake. The water is always so cear and the area is really nice and serene. The staff is really great with the kids, and they always have a good time. No wonder Garland ISD is still taking kids there every year.

Camp Grady Spruce is a YMCA camp and offer super facilities and services to Dallas area kids and families. Their summer camp program is filled with fun activities and they have specialty camps for special interests like horseback riding, rock climbing, etc. Their prices are reasonable and the staff is just great each year we've been involved. Many of the parents we know attended activities at Grady Spruce when they were growing up, so it bring back happy memories for lots of folks while building great times for kids today.

Our school district uses this place to take the kids for a week out of the school year. They get credit for school while they are there, and they learn a bunch about the outdoors, camping, crafts, and more. This is a great idea for all area schools. It was very fun when we went here, and it is something the kids really work for because not everyone got to go. It is up to the parent and yes it is an extra cost. It is a great experience.
