Dr. Hundemer seemed in love with the sound of her own voice. She jumped to conclusions based on very little information, talked a lot about her own kids during my appointment and interrupted me. I wouldn't trust her with my basic care. I tried to transfer to a different PCP in the practice but my request was denied!! As a consumer, I was appalled by this poor customer service. As a patient, I was frightened to think of what would happen should I not be able to speak for myself, yet this woman would be in charge of my care...I transferred to a completely different practice.

I was also randomly placed her after moving here and needing a PCP. I initially went to her for a belly ache after I ate, I think the thing that burned me up about her the most was that she never looked at me when I talked to her, she kept her face buried in the screen of a laptop every time I went to see her ! She rarely even examined me just kept referring me to other places. Anyway she had no clue what was wrong with me, she went from blood work to Kidneys to Liver to an Ulcer to Pancreas and back to an Ulcer....real long story short I found another Doctor and I was Diagnosed with Stage III Cancer that She had missed.

I wish I could select no stars. I was randomly placed with Dr. Hundemer while trying to establish myself with a PCP in Frederick. I had to wait a month and a half to get in with her (not a problem since I was only getting in for a routine physical). As I explained my past history to her, she down played every single thing that was said. She talked down to me as well. I, too, am in the health care industry which seemed to bother her for some reason. She tried to use very large words with me and when I didn't understand and asked her what they meant she rolled her eyes at me. I have a history of mitral valve prolapse and have had issues with my heart racing recently. Unfortunately, my insurance requires a referral for a specialist. I needed to see a cardiologist and don't have one in Frederick. I was told that I had to see her first for the issue before a referral could be give. Fine...made an appt, went to see her JUST to have her tell me that I most likely didn't have mitral valve and when I asked for the referral she denied me of it because as she put it "I am very conscience of the tax payers dollar and don't want to send you to a specialist when it's something I am well capable of"...as if she had to prove to me that she was a doctor! I was FURIOUS! I am the one that pays for my insurance and premiums NOT HER! Still having heart issues; tried to change to Dr. Lerner, who is in the same practice and WONDERFUL, but was told that he is not accepting new patients. I am now forced to totally change practices because the other Frederick Primary Care associate locations "Don??t like to steal other locations patients". I can't even begin to explain how infuriated I am with this doctor. Now my heart palpitations have to be ??put on hold? until I can actually find a professional doctor who keeps their own ??tax payer ethics? to herself! Aren??t doctors supposed to care about your health, not force it to be a larger issue and stresser?

What also sent me over the edge was the fact that she knows that I work for the dialysis center near by. She leaned into me and said "Now just between you and I, who is your favorite doctor that you work with?!" Unprofessional and unethical as a doctor to be trying to dig up dirt on colleagues. I refused to answer her. I have never been so unhappy with a doctor in my entire life.

Dr. Hundemer treats you personally and takes the time. Downside is that phones are always busy, so it takes numberous times to get the call through and call backs are way late. The front office staff is very short. However, they seem to have plenty of time to yuk it up.

As John C. said- Dr. Hundemer has been an excellent doctor. She has been my doctor for close to 10 years and she has always been wonderfully attentive to what seems to be going on and always willing to check out concerns I have and rule things out.I am definitely overweight, too. She always been encouraging about caring for my body as I age, certainly not prejudice against overweight people in any way. Her job is our health- let's face it weight does bring on a myriad of health issues- and it is her job to tell us if that weight is compromising our health.Just felt it was important for people to know she is a great, caring doctor, I followed her from one practice to another and since I moved- although there are doctors much closer, I choose to continue to see her because I feel she is that good.

Both my wife and I see Dr. Hundemer. She spends time with her patients; and she has been right on with her diagnosis for a myriad of minor things.

Some folks are never satisfied with anything and it seems that they are the ones who talk the loudest or in the case of internet comments - the longest. It is too bad that some folks had bad experiences, but I would advise them to to buck up and move on. Life does not offer everyone the same experience.

I had Lyme disease several years ago (which is caused by a bite from an infected tick, and has nothing at all to do with body weight). Dr. Hundemer repeatedly failed to diagnose or treat me for Lyme because she was busy blaming my health issues on the fact that I am overweight.

When I first presented, my main problem was fatigue. Instead of thoughtfully considering what might be wrong, she lept to the conclusion that I must be fatigued because I was fat, and that I must be fat because I didn't exercise enough. She focused on trying to harangue me into hiking (don't know why she was fixated on that particular form of exericse, but she was). This, when I could barely get out of bed every day. I was so fatigued I had to take a leave from work.

Contrary to what some other reviews have stated, I found her to be very uncaring, dismissive, and demeaning. I guess in order to experience her caring side, you have to be thin.

Anyway... my fatigue continued and I developed a long list of other symptoms, such as headaches (or really more, one continual headache that never subsided), memory problems (I could not hold on to thoughts no matter how hard I tried, would feel them oozing out of my head), heart palpitations, joint pain, patches of tingling/numbness, visual disturbances (seeing geometric patterns of light scroll across my visual screen), and anxiety attacks. I was desperately researching my symptoms online, and it certainly seemed as though I had Lyme. I went back to Hundemer and had to talk her into even ordering a test for me.

She chose the cheapo test, which is known to be less reliable than the more expensive test, *especially* when diagnosing Lyme disease that has been allowed to progress for a while. The test came back negative, so Dr. Hundemer refused to treat me for Lyme.

My life was falling apart. I was in danger of losing my job. I could not function at all at the end. A friend's mother, who had had Lyme herself, told me she was certain what I had was Lyme, and that I needed to get treatment immediately or it could become intractable. I had to have my mother drive me back to the doctor's and I took along printouts of Lyme disease symptoms with the ones I had circled, as well as information about how unreliable the cheap Lyme test is. I had to take written information because my thinking was so muddled at that point (a late-stage Lyme symptom) that I could not trust myself to adequately communicate everything I needed to. At this third visit, I *insisted* on being prescribed antibiotics for what I was now convinced was Lyme. Dr. Hundemer acted as though I were an unreasonable child. She finally, and with great eye-rolling, prescribed me an antibiotic that is in fact often used for children, and for pregnant women. She chose this one because it has fewer side effects; it is NOT one of the ones that is normally prescribed for or particularly well known to be effective for Lyme.

FINALLY, after taking the course of antibiotics, I experienced cessation of most of my symptoms (though the fatigue took a while longer to clear up). I am lucky that the antibiotics worked, given the length of time my Lyme had been allowed to go untreated and given the weak antibiotic Dr. Hundemer prescribed.

I believe that Dr. Hundemer's zealous focus on my weight as the source of my problems prevented her from accurately diagnosing me much earlier.

In retrospect, there were signs pointing to Lyme that should have lept out at her, had she bothered truly investigating the cause of my complaints. It was early June when I first started having problems, prime season for Lyme. I had been in the woods in two of the most Lyme-ridden areas of the country (upstate New York and San Francisco) in addition to my parents' wooded lot in Maryland. I was not aware of having been bitten by a tick (deer ticks, which transmit Lyme, are pretty small) but I had had an unexplained, inflamed bump earlier that spring in SF. And the order in which I experienced symptoms was classic Lyme. General fatigue and malaise are often the first symptoms. Neurological and Cardiac symptoms present when a person has been allowed to go untreated for some time.

I really like Dr Hundemer. She is very easy to talk to and caring. She spends enough time with you and doesn't seem rushed when seeing you. Her nurses are very friendly. The staff at the doctors office is usually very nice. Sometimes when you call they seem to have a bit of attitude but I guess everyone has their off days.

PROS: Wonderful Caring Doctor and Great Friendly Nurses
CONS: Phone People are Sometimes Short With You

Dr. Hundemer was our family's doctor for 13 years, until we moved. Because of the successful doctor/patient relationship we've had with her we stayed with her as patients even when, for a while, our insurance changed and her practice wasn't one of the providers. I can never thank her enough for listening to me and taking me seriously, 13 years ago, when I first visited her because of infertility that other doctors before her would not take seriously. In my experience, she's 100% commited to the best interests of her patients. I'd like to add I agree with everything Lori wrote.

PROS: Puts patients first, follows up with patients, good with kids
CONS: Can be brusque at times but who isn't?

Though she herself has had breast cancer, she missed my diagnosis of breast cancer because it presented as severe bone cancer pain, but she did not catch lump on examination, and would have continued referring me out to other doctors had I not taken matters into control myself and sought more professional advice. Even more concerning, she recommended physical therapy for me, even though I had huge tumor in my spine and PT could have paralyzed me. She is very kind though.

PROS: She is kind, her nurse is very friendly.
CONS: I would not recommend her as physician; missed cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Karen Hundemer is a wonderful physician for my entire family! We love her , she is so nice and really thorough. A no nonsense doctor that doesn't waste your time. She usually is accepting new patients. The offices she's located in are really nice and easy to find with lots of parking. If she can't fix what ails you she will refer you to someone who can. That's only happened once for us. Her nurse is wonderful , very kind and friendly. There's usually not a long wait at all to see her.
