I agree that Indian Well State park is a great place for a weekend barbecue or to bring the kids for a hike, but check your map before you head up to Meriden! This park is located along the Housatonic River in Shelton, off Route 8. Perhaps the other reviewer was thinking of HUBBARD PARK? This is also a very nice park in Meriden that is excellent for hiking, cookouts, etc.Just wanted to clear that up!

Indian Well State Park has a network of hiking trails that are well maintained and quiet. As with anywhere in Connecticut, while hiking you may occasionally hear cars passing by, so you'll know that you're not completely isolated, but its definitely better than most areas. The trails are not very difficult although there is a steep climb at the beginning of the trail system that may be challenging for little kids. Once you've passed that the remaining trail is definitely family-friendly. There is a stream along the trail way with a short stretch of rapids. Aside from the trails the park has a big green field perfect for frisbee or other outdoor games, some picnic tables and barbecue pits.
