I loved it!. But,I purchased pumpernickel flour and need to know what is in it. What percentage is rye? Is there other flour in it besides rye?
4Randy,
If you still the recipe book, send me your email and I can send it to you. jlipp86612@aol.com
Always an interesting experience to visit here. I have a question though...I walked out without their recipe booklet for making their cookies etc. does anyone have a copy they might scan and send to me or at least what exactly do I add to the chocolate chip mix.
4Can I purchase your dry Potato Soup with visa through e-mail or mail? My Aunt says this is the best Potato Soup she has ever had. It is the most like homemade.
5We visit this store on our way to riverside. We buy lots of bulk grains at a low price. Very healthy for us. We stock up on our spices. We would love to know when they have their spring onion plants for sale. They were almost gone when we came the last time. It is a 5 star store to us.

When at Stringtown, don't forget the Bump and Dent discount store just down the store, offering great bargain's on stuff that the "main stream" stores rejects. When combined with each other, it can save your family huge dollars on pantry items, and on occasion they have special purchases to sell too. Open on Wednesdays, Friday, and Saturdays. The earlier you get there the better, as every day has a different option for supplies. Just watch the "expiration dates" on some things, and you'll do great. I visit there often, they don't take credit cards, cash only is your best bet when you go to these stores. I highly recommend going there if you have a lower income, or have many people to buy for. They do not sell refrigerated items, but do sell many of the common staples for your house hold.

A trip we often make to Kalona includes a stop at Stringtown Grocery. We almost always buy pastas and some of their snack-like items (sesame sticks, etc.). They also have geletin and some candies. They do have a refrigerated area where you can pick up eggs and milk and where they keep their produce.
PROS: old fashioned ingredients, mostly locally produced items
CONS: a bit of a drive to get to

Small country grocery store in the heart of Amish country near Kalona. The store is lit with gas pipes and lamps (a little scarey). The store is run and owned by Amish. Most items are sold in bulk are appear to packaged by hand (such as it came bulk and things are hand labeled in plastic bags by the pound). Great place to get bulk items such as yeast, bread ingredients, candies, baking ingredients, etc. Cooler with fresh produce as well.

This grocery store is run by the Old Order Amish. They do speak English. The food is purchased in bulk and then repackaged into more manageable bags. I like to purchase pasta, nuts and spices here. They also have gravy mixes, that orange powdered cheese for macaroni (or popcorn), candy and cereal.
They are closed for German holidays. The gaslights give me a headache.

I like to go to this little grocery store tucked just off Highway 1 north of Kalona. They not only carry bulk food items such as pasta, nuts, Jell-O, some cereals, powdered mixes, spices and bulk slabs of chocolate. I like the homemade jellies and jams. Plus they also have fresh baked bread, sticky rolls and cinnamon rolls.
This is a Amish Grocery Store therefore they do not have phone service.
