In 1947 Italian born Arcito Castellucci married Sophia Zavanlagos, a girl from Sparta, Greece. As you may have guessed, dinner was an event at the Castellucci household. Rather than decide between the cuisines, they decided to blend both cultures together, creating authentic dishes that represented the best of both worlds. The oldest son, Frederic II, studied the art of these recipes and once he had perfected them, Sugo was created. Not only did Frederick II learn the secret to making mouthwatering dishes, but he learned the value of a dollar. And as you will see from our menu, he carried that over to his customers. So allow our family to make your evening special with our authentic cuisine and gracious hospitality. We would love to have the opportunity to host you and your family and let you see what happens when an Italian marries a Greek.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Anchoring a shopping center strip, Sugo welcomes diners with new, home-like interiors that suggest you are eating in someone's large, Tuscan-inspired dining room. Dark wood tables set generously apart, wood and concrete floors and burgundy walls add to the cozy ambience. The servers are young, energetic and knowledgeable, and confidently explain preparations and recommend wines. Service is nicely paced and attentive throughout the meal, adding to the convivial ease.

The Food
Mediterranean dishes are joyousy over the top, with portions that evoke a mother's urgings. Tapas include delicious baked stuffed calamari which stands up to the breading better than the eggplant. Dorothea's hearty garden pappardelle is loaded with unusual vegetables, including caramelized radishes and parsnips and long-stem artichokes, and the savory lamb saltimbocca includes a sample of walnut pesto and sausage stuffed pork braciole. For dessert, skip the fussy tiramisu and try the refreshing limoncello gelato with cream.

Key Points

  • Tapas & Small Plates
  • Family Friendly Dining

Sugo is not good

by Lori J. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 691

We went here to celebrate my friends birthday. The food was extremely high priced for the portion size and we were not impressed at all. Its a decent atmosphere but not worth the bad food at ridiculous prices. We won't go back.

One of my Italian FAVS!

by Mandee Y.

We LOVE Sugo! It's a great alternative to the typical fine dining restaurants- smaller and more intimate. The food is incredible! They definitely have authentic nailed. My husband and I eat out about 6 out of 7 nights a week so we have a ton of restaurant experience under our belts- Sugo is a must go!

Average Food but pricey

by John d.

My wife and I had dinner at Sugo's in Roswell. Neither of us thought our food was very good. One of the owners came by to ask about the food. I wanted to be honest and said it was just ok, and all she said was sorry and that was it. We would not go back. It was not a very pleasant experience.

A must visit for anyone in the Roswell/Alphareta area

by BennyS

I take out of town visiter and my ITP friends here all the time. I am not normally a tapas fan, but this place has the best I have ever had. The meatballs are an absolute must!!!! If you arent into tapas, then the rest of the Italian food is also amazing. I took an italian friend here for the first time and he is now constantly going back.

Equally as amazing as the food quality is the very reasonable prices. No matter what we order or how much i get to drink, i am never shocked at the bill and always think what a great deal it is.

The historic roswell location is better than the one off holcomb bridge.

Pros: AMAZING tapas, great prices, top notch service

Cons: cant think of anythign

Wine Dinners and Warning

by atlwinechick

We attended a Sunday night wine dinner that was very well done. The winemaker was in attendance from Italy, spoke great english, and came around to talk to each table. There was also live music, and a charity benefactor. The food was well prepared and for the most part complemented the wine. Although the baklava, delicious on it's own, seemed way too sweet to go with the dessert wine it was paired with. Since not serving a food that is sweeter than the wine seems like basic wine pairing knowledge, I asked the winemaker what his thoughts were. He replied that it would never be paired with something that sweet in Italy. Nonetheless, the $60.00 per person charge was reasonable and our service was good. BEWARE though: the bill is presented before your meal and includes tax and tip. The fact that the tip is included is not stated on the receipt, or the website as far as I could tell. When I called to get an adjustment to our credit card, I was told that "tax and tip are always included". Personally, I don't mind this practice as long as it's made clear to me. All in all, I would definitely recommend attending a wine dinner at Sugo.

Pros: Wine Dinner

Cons: A Little Noisy

I am not going back again to eat brutal italian food.

by renmonteiro

The apetizer, i.e. steemed mussels, was good but the the main dishes were
too brutal. The food at this place is comparable to a big italian food chain and
there is nothing formidable to it. For excellent and light italian food, go to LaGrotta,
which, in my opinion, is the best italian restaurant in Atlanta. Service was also
mediocre. The waiter tried hard but he simply was not sufficiently trained. He has
committed too many errors and in the end, despite my request for a very strong
expresso, he brought me instead a strong watered coffee which I was not able to
drink. A italian restaurant that does not know how to make a good expresso should
not be classified as italian!

So, I am not going back again.

Recommend...but with a disclaimer

by mt30067

The key to enjoying this restaurant is managing your expectations. The feel is neighborhood family restaurant, not intown fine dining - so your expectations of service, presentation, and offerings should reflect such. Exactly what this restaurant is going for seems a little confusing as the entree prices aren't your typical family restaurant prices. They could easily cut back on the portion size on some of their dishes to make the entree prices more in line with the ambience and service of the restaurant. While the menu is limited (especially when it comes to pasta options), many of the entrees are focused on flavor combinations with a multitude of components (e.g. Federico?s Pork Braciole). Some of the more simple entrees comprised mostly of a protein and caramalized onions are good, but nothing special. The unique experience, overall good food, and Roswell location will encourage a return visit.

Pros: Location, Food

Cons: Prices, Unpolished wait staff, Parking, Wine list

Fabulous Meal and Service

by mngsaunders

The meal that my husband and I were served last night was Fabulous, Flavorful, and Outstanding. Megan (our wait staff) was well educated on the menu and a delight. We decided to order the specials of the evening. The chicken wrapped in filo dough tapas was unbelievable. The sea bass was served with noodles in a wonderful light and flavorful cream sauce. Wow! The prime steak could not have been prepared more perfectly. Served with stuff red peppers, carmelized onions in portwine reduction. Amazing flavor! We will definately be back and will spread the word. Kudo's to the family for creating such wonderful and unique meals. Loved our experience:)

Pros: Great Food and Service!

Cons: None

great for small and large groups (kid friendly)

by JeffFrank

I love this place. I think that the manager is the father of the owner of several sugos - I see him nearly every time I visit. He takes the time to visit each table to get feedback on the food, and if you desire, he'll tell you why it's so good. Very interesting guy.

We enjoy taking our parents here when they visit, as well as our kids. The ambience is very nice, but not stuffy. Excellent service - and the food is not like any other italian restaurant I've ever had. Prices are not overly expensive, but not inexpensive either. I think it's a good value for the cost.

Best authentic Italian cusine outside of Italy

by mark_from_michigan

If you?ve ever had the pleasure to stay in a quaint Bed & Breakfast in the hill towns of Tuscany and been served amazing culinary preparations unlike anything touted as ?Italian? so typical of the Italian restaurants of America? then you?ll fully appreciate your dining experience at Sugo. This is not ?typical? Italian, but more accurately, authentic Italian.

Some claim Sugo to be Mediterranean.. Authentic Italian cuisine is Mediterranean. I call Sugo ?Italian?? but yeah, it?s a mix of a little Italian, a little Greek, and a whole lot of ?unique?. I don?t do big nationwide mass production, processed food restaurants. At Sugo, its fresh prepared daily, just like in the old country, just like at home.

I read one of the other reviews here. It was less than appreciative, rated the restaurant very poorly. That reviewer couldn?t be more wrong; said something about being loud, fake, well rehearsed, bland food. Clearly that poster was looking for another ?typical? restaurant. In fact, the bread is fresh baked all night long, so if it takes a bit time? its worth the wait.

The ?C?s? are native?s of Rhode Island, so expect a big New York ?Hi! How are ya! Look who?s here!? of a welcome.

Mr. C is a master architect when it comes to ingredients and preparation. With each bite your mouth with go through a culinary "mouth explosion" as you try to decipher ?wow, what?s in this??. Take your time, go slow, and savor every bite. You?ll be tempted to scarf. Don?t! Make it a slow indulgence.

I?ve made an entire meal by ordering a smorgasbord of tapas. Try putting Eggplant Montassio, Hunters Sausage, Euro Mushrooms, the Geek Salad (amazingly different!), and Pan Aglio y Olio together.

I've had everything on the menu, but I'm partial to the specials!

My favorites menu & specials:
Pork Paladar, the Braciole, and High Tide, Lamola, Saltimboka, Tallagio, Involtini.

Say hello to Robert, Heather, Krystal, Zata, Sara, Nancy (Mrs. ?C?), and of course Mr. ?C?.

Pros: Quality, consistency, friendly, value, service, unique, flavor.

Cons: Wish there was one in Michigan.

Authentic European Experience!

by sophie567

Sugo has become the home away from home for my group of friends whenever we are in town. The atmosphere is cozy and authentic, the music (generally soft italian opera) and lighting are both just right, and the service is always well informed and attentive. The dishes are all masterpeices, truly new ways of cooking here in the states. I have tried most of the tapas and several of the entrees and have yet to be dissapointed. There is an excellent choice on the menu for a good variety of foods. I really enjoy the pizza rollatini, lamb saltimboca, hunters sausage, aunt lena's chicken, the salads, and any special I have ordered has yet to let me down. Wine flows freely and the desserts leave you wanting to order every one on the menu, especially the bomba and the tiramisu. I would highly reccomend Sugo for a private party - the last time I was there I peeked in on a group that had reserved the back patio, probably at least 50 people! There were christmas lights and candles and such a festive and jovial feeling in the air I wished I was a part of it. Sugo will continue to be the meeting spot for my friends and I whenever we are in Atlanta.

Pros: service, FOOD, wine list

Cons: can get busy

Great Find!

by s_hayford

Sugo was recommended to me by a friend. Best friend I might add. She told me that it was her new favorite restaurant in atl; this was hard to believe seeing that we have lived here 10 years and eaten almost everywhere. Man was she right, best friends never lie!! I went for my b-day with her and 15 of my girlfriends, when we walked in the hostess greeted us like we were walking into her home, I later found out that it was one of the owners (a husband and wife team). Our server was very knowledgeable and recommended that we try one of his favorite wines, which was very good for the price (14 hands cab). I had a lamb dish that "MR.C" convinced me to have by the way he described it, saying that he hand made it in the morning and cooked for something like 5 hours. I had the "Bomba" for desert, which was sung to me by one of the servers whom is a trained opera singer. The only negative I could find about sugo is that we had to wait a little more than expected, however I found out why people were willing to wait, THE FOOD!

Pros: Everything!

Cons: wait

HORRIBLE, AND SCARY.

by gmadson

i came into sugo restaurant a few weeks back. the hostess was very fake and loud. she scared me. my wife and i did not make a reservation so we were asked to wait about 10 min. we agreed, walked up to the tiniest bar i had ever seen and had to fight the crowd for a cocktail. when we ordered, the bartender rudley said 'NO, WE DONT SERVE LIQUOR'. and he walked away never to return. we were seated after a thirty five minute wait. when i waitress arived, very promptly, she told us this description of how much goes into the food as far as preperation time, the high quality ingrediants. yada yada ya...now usually we dont really ask/want bread at places, but seeing that we had to wait, my wife was kind of hungry. we did ask for bread about three times before it finally came. the waitress told us they bake it fresh to order.... YEAH RIGHT! after hearing the well rehersed "specials" for the evening from the waitress, i had to order it, it sounded too good to be true. and when the food was brought out. it was too good to be true. horrible presentation. the dish was smaller than the food that was on it. it looked like a bunch of ingrediants just thrown togather. the taste was defiantly something i had not tasted before. but it was okay. we did have dessert and wow the limoncello' was awesome. when the bill came i was shocked at the price of the food. i felt like i had been sold on something that broke on the first day of use. horrible. way too much money for what i received and i will not be back nor recommend this to friends.

Pros: limoncello'

Cons: pricing is horrific for food that is horrible

Overall Amazing

by atlfdllvr

It was my first time there and it was great. The owner greeted us and took us to our table. It was my friends bday so he was made sure we were treated well like royality. Our waitress made sure we had everything from drinks, food, dessert and much more. Some of the associates knew it was our first time and came to our table to see how we liked it and made sure we were in great hands. We got free desset and a free drink for the bday girl as well a free toast for the 4 of us. It was a great experience and I know I will be going back. The food was great and so was the service =)

Pros: Parking is free if you go to the one at Perimeter

Cons: may get busy but its worth it

Humdrum Italian

by bacchus_ga

You walk into a romantically lit interior that is rustic Italian softened into elegance by the candlelight. You are ushered in with warm hospitality by the hostess.

Unfortunately, the unversed waitress strikes a discordant note, with her inability to make a food recommendation except in terms of the serving size. The wine list is a bit overpriced considering the rather generic nature of the Chiantis on display.

However, you put aside such trivialities and concentrate on the menu. The Tapas menu is scant and you finally decide on the waitress' tapas special for two recommendation. The tapas when brought out are all on one plate, and consist of the Hunters grilled specialty sausages, eggplant montassio, pasta pouches, and an incredible amount of pasta sauce.

The food is good but unremarkable. It serves as a painful reminder that $19 was just spent on something that does not quite fit the inventiveness of a "tapas" billing, and can be found in much greater quantities at an Olive Garden for less price.

Hunger triumphs over common sense, and you decide on one more item off the tapas menu: the baked stuffed calamari ("signature tapas"). The calamari decidedly makes up in volume for what it lacks in flavor.

There was nothing bad about the food here, it just does not live up to the glowing reviews or the restaurant's Mediterranean-Tapas-Spanish-Greek pretensions.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Food

A Pleasant Experience

by barryescott

Our first visit to Sugo was a very good experience. Our waiter, Marcello, was as professional and pleasant as they come. He is worth asking for.

We were interested in the Tapas or small plates because we like to sample many flavors in small portions. They did not disappoint us.

I can highly recommend the baked stuffed calamari, eggplant montassio, hunters sausages, and Marcellos chicken (an entree served with pasta and roasted vegetables).

Only negative was we were hustled by a waitress-in-training. She asked if we would like some bread which ended up on our bill as a Tapas item for $5 (a cheap trick to pad a tab).

It was quickly forgotten, however, when the Mrs. C. offered us a glass of Moscato DAsti which was an excellent after dinner drink.

Pros: Food, Service, Mr. and Mrs. C.

One of the Finest establishments in Atlanta.

by smilt

When I saw that Sugo won BOC I was very excited to see how it was, expecting above average. I left Sugo that night with my boyfriend and called all of my girlfriends that I had just eaten at the best Italian restaurant in my life. They, knowing how picky I am came out with me the next night (Saturday) with a group of 10. The Food was Exceptional, and the service was friendly and very knowledgeable. "Mr. C."(Owner) gave us the specials, I felt like I was being catered to by my own personal chef the way he was so energetic and confident in his food. I will become one of sugos regular customers!

Cons: none

No More Than Pedestrian

by tomstricker

We must have ordered the wrong food or maybe moving to Duluth has done something to the menu. We order chicken with capers and spaghetti with italian sausage. I have had much better, and my wife makes much better spaghetti sauce. There was plenty of it, but the taste was bland, what there was of it. I wouldn't be so negative, if we hadn't expected much better from reviews. Customer service was o.k., not extraordinary.

Pros: Price, value

Cons: Taste, food.
