Museum, at present, is OK... But WHY did they CLOSE the older hangar stored exhibits when they built the present museum??? Back in 1988, when the museum was still spread out over several outdoor areas and several hangars and storage buildings, they had AT LEAST THREE TIMES as many exhibits displayed... INCLUDING some of the old Silver Eagles aerobatic HELICOPTER airshow performer heli's, and numerous earlier helicopter versions... Including a couple where the pilot was stationed on a platform ABOVE the engine, rotors, and all...

Since they opened the current museum building, they NO LONGER have ANY of the TRULY INTERESTING displays they used to show ON DISPLAY!!! But they probably have those truly interesting exhibits stored away somewhere on Ft. Rucker... By now, probably just ROTTING AWAY and COLLECTING DUST where NOBODY can see them!!!

If they would open more outdoor area for the older exhibits, or RE-OPEN some of the old hangar display spaces, I'd GLADLY rate the museum as a FIVE-STAR place to visit...

Their opening the current museum building AND CLOSING ALL THE OLD EXHIBIT LOCATIONS drops my rating from a FIVE-STAR to ONLY a VERY WEAK THREE-STAR rating!!!

The gift shop itself is located inside the Aviation musuem and is very small. They carry some neat merchandise that is specific to the Army Helicopters. Many shirts, hats, coffee mugs and jackets that have the Aviation graphics on them. Not a big selection but if you want something specific this is a great place to look.

I took a group of Boy Scouts there who just enjoyed seeing the planes and helicopters inside the museum. Being able to sit inside one and read the facts. The museum is free and has plenty of parking. The facility is very clean and the staff is friendly.
The boys each picked out a patch to carry home as a memorial of their visit from the gift shop. They have a wide variety of collectable items. The gift shop has quality products at a great price.
