East Village Vegan/Organic restaurant. Creative food, "almost tastes like meat." Good service.

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years. What I can say about this food, is that it is fairly creative, and not your typical, "Wow, it almost tastes like meat" kind of vegan restaurant. However, the prices are a little outrageous. I'm sorry,

I'm a vegetarian (not a vegan) and this surpassed my expectations! Had the spinach ravioli special with avocado, tasty and of course fresh. \r
Impressive menu and very creative. I could've tried every dish! I'll have to come back pronto.

I agree with the other review. I have been coming here for years, mainly because the hours are convenient and the few things I order are always good. But nothing else really except of late. It has improved! The menu looks simplified, and the food is a bit tastier.
I have never had a problem with the service, except I suppose if the place is packed, a wait is to be expected.
The classic nachos are a delicious treat, so is the tofu pesto sandwich. The salads are great but avoid the soups - especially the miso soup which is an abomination to the Japanese staple. The desserts are nice but I'm usually too full to partake.

I've eaten at Caravan off and on for the last three years. I've dealt with some of the things others have mentioned: service issues, high prices. But something surprising happened recently: I noticed Caravan is getting better.

I stopped in a couple weeks ago for dinner. The space was still romantic, with low lighting/candlelight, brick walls, and a great pair of jazz guitarists playing Triplets of Belleville-style gypsy jazz. The food was better than ever. The paella is the best I've had in a long time (vegetarian paella is not on a lot of menus in town) and my girlfriend's burrito was everything you'd want in one: rice, beans, veggies, rich guacamole, bright salsa, without all the heaviness you'd find in regular burrito joints.

I had a draft beer (organic hefe-weizen) that was delicious and my girlfriend had a Pink Lady, a fruit smoothie that tasted like dessert. Perfect.

I went back tonight with some friends (my suggestion) and Caravan didn't let me down. The food was great again, the service was spot-on, friendly and attentive, the music and space were relaxing, and that hefe-weizen went really well with seitan taquitos with pineapple.

I am officially on the Caravan.

I was initially exicted about checking out this vegetarian restaurant but from the get go my experience was anything but dreamy...
The hostess practically ignored us, then sat us all the way in the back
Our waitress was a mess, it took her 20 minutes to even get us water, let alone take our order
We ordered mango smoothies and they came out looking and tasting like hot pureed babyfood with stringy bites of bad unripe mango in it
The waitress told us that the blender over heats and to this she added "its normal"
(trust me, i have two culinary degrees, and that is NOT NORMAL)
then she gave us atitude about sending them back
The food took forever coming out, meanwhile our waitress was busy recking havick on our poor fellow diners, screwing up orders left and right
When the food came out i thought i'd ordered the wrong thing
I had ordered the ravioli as an ENTREE
what came out was 6 sad looking raviolli swimming in a plate of white sauce
i will admit that it didn't taste that bad, but for the price i paid i was very dissapointed
needless to say we didn't even bother with dessert
we left and were both still so hungry that we went on a late night hunt for chocolate ice cream
but i can asure you i'm still having nightmares about my meal there : (

I went to Caravan of Dreams for a large dinner party and was not impressed at all. The food was okay but not worth the $45 my portion of the bill came to. Also, the wine selection was a disaster and the wait staff did not seem to be in any kind of hurry to take your order or deliver your food. I do have to say that some people who were at our table love it there so......

I love caravan of dreams. It is a vegetarians dream come true. They have many tasty dishes using tofu. There was a tofu cuban dish involving banana that I had--- I nearly passed out it was so delicious. they often have live music. the last time I was there it was a 3 peice jazz band. For those of us that are kosher, there is kosher wine to be had with your meal.

The only down side to this place is that it is small inside, sort of cramped. There is often a sizeable wait to get a table.it is worth the wait!

There are not many places you can do in the east village with a menu like this, i have my favorite on the menu and stick to them, the salads are big and filling. I brought a girl there for a date who liked to eat "healthy" and she loved it.
the waiters are a bit out to lunch and service was a bit slow, but we were not in a rush.
it felt good to eat all those veggies.

I have been wining and dinning in New York city for 3 years and never have I seen anything like this.
Creatures stand for: code: romeo, oscar, alpha, charlie, hotel, echo, sierra) as
I know it's the LES, and there are creatures everywhere, but seeing creatures run by my table and having to point it out to the waiter is not acceptable. The waiter quite instinctively crashed the creature with a menu. He then apologized as if this happened commonly. No surprise whatsoever.
At that point I had lost total appetite and couldn't keep my eyes off the floor which eventually led to seeing another creature. Again, I had to point it out to a waiter.
I then asked to talk to the manager who apologized and said there was nothing he could do, that this happened occasionally even though he exterminated every week.
I'm sorry but even on occasion, live creatures running around my table when I eat is not acceptable for me. Especially if there's nothing special about the food. Yes it's vegetarian, yes its live, but come one, it's New York city, I have plenty of options!! Plus it's soooo expensive for what it is. I recommend you go to GOBO if you want good vegan food with great ambiance and NO creatures.

This has to be one of the worst dining experiences in New York that I've had in a very long time. After we were seated, we saw another customer complain about having to wait too long to get a drink and then receiving it all melted, so that should have been a sign. The waiter didn't seem to be interested in taking our orders. It took him over 10 minutes to come back to the table and he clearly wasn't busy. His attitude wasn't rude, but he clearly wasn't friendly either. They were out of all sparkling waters, so we ordered something else.. The entrees come with salads and we were served those right away. Only they come without dressing. There was a teeny little bit of dressing on the bottom, but you could barley taste it. We got the entrees in a decent amount of time too, only they were barley lukewarm and lacked seasoning. We had the Caravan Feast and the Macrobiotic Platter. The food didn't taste bad, but it was clearly nothing special. You expect a lot more for that price. While we ate, the waiter never cared to check on us or refill our empty water glasses. Even after we were done and our plates had been cleared, our waiter was standing 2 ft. from our table chit chatting with another waitress.
On another note, the lady working behind the bar was crying while she was working, which made the whole place just seem really bizarre.
We originally wanted to order dessert, but since we were ignored the entire time, we just wanted to leave. About 15 minutes after our plates were cleared, we had enough of waiting and got up to go to the front to pay, since that seemed to be the only way to get anything accomplished. The manager (assuming that's who he was) didn't seem to care either. He apologized half-heartedly while the bad waiter was standing nearby, not saying a word.
There are so many other vegan restaurants in NYC. Most of them cost less and are a lot better foodwise and definitely servicewise. Save your time and money and stay away from Caravan of "Dreams"!!

I love them because clearly they love me. The food they feed me is so good & fresh. I feel healthier after I eat here then anywhere else. Period. I find the service terrific and I do not think they take too long. I will be moving from the east village to the financial district and I am so sad that I will not have easy access to the goodness & yummyness of caravan.

Here's the deal. I used LOVE caravan. I have been in NYC, vegan, and going to Caravan for years. Caravan's menu is really simple. While other restaurants have moved forward with culinary innovations, Caravan is still serving beans and sprouts.

Yet, Caravan charges upmarket prices for simple cafe food. It's really a poor value, disguised by the fact that the servings are plentiful. The service is awful. A recent visit proves both points. I go to Caravan for lunch. I decide to order this burrito. It's listed on the menu at $15, which I think is WAY expensive for a downmarket burrito at lunch, and before someone gets on my case with the organic argument, just forget about it, its rent we are paying, not quality. The waitress tells me they have no seitan, ok, so I say, I'll have tempeh instead...I end up with a totally different burrito, one with peas and beans and not what I wanted at all. Then I get the bill, and she charged me $17 for a lousy lunch burrito. I can't stress this enough, I spend tons of money on food---and I usually don't care about price, but it just seemed like a major rip off. The food at Caravan is stuff you (even I) can make at home. The decor is relaxed and east village circa 1995. It looks like that one vegan restaurant you find in every major city, with burritos, salads, and pasta dishes in a pseudo hippy "artsy" environment. I dig all that, actually, but they need to majorly adjust their prices and their service accordingly, and add a few new more complex dishes to the menu.

Cons: completely uninvolved service, haven't updated the menu in ages, way, way, way too expensive for what you get.

Hands down THE MOST BLAND AND DISAPPOINTING culinary experience in my short time in New York (3 years). Even for the vegetarians in my group kept looking at each other chewing laboriously throughout the entire meal. The menu is extensive enough that maybe there are some hits but we went 0 for 3 on a diverse meal order.

It didn't help that the service was mostly mediocre too - the wait staff was really slow taking orders and bringing out drinks.

Speaking of which, the "house-blend sangria" was nothing more than kool-aid with bits of apples floating in it...if there was any alcohol a 10 year old could have downed a carafe without so much as a hiccup. If that's not a crime I don't know what is.

Everyone else seems to think this place is great. Maybe we ordered the 3 worst things on the menu so who knows. But we ordered strictly vegan stuff...I'm of the opinion that vegan cuisine should be something more than pitiful approximations of hearty, meaty dishes. Example: vegan paella (mentioned in someone else's review) is a downright delusional concept to me. So there's my bias in writing this review. But hey, we gave it a shot.

The only thing that wasn't disappointing was the fact that Venieros was only a few blocks away. I had never needed a piece of cheesecake so badly in my life, having sat through that trial of a meal.

Pros: Delicious healthy food, wonderful live music

Cons: Has been a little loud at times

Oh my god, the raw dishes here are soooo good, and every server is a sweet person! Try the live sandwich for a reasonably-priced treat. Great tea selection and a juice bar are other boons. I feel so healthy and vibrant after a meal at Caravan!

Pros: Wonderful, healthy food; cute and cozy rear dining room

Cons: Some pricey dishes; slightly squeezed front dining room with uneven flooring

I made reservations for a large group, 16 of us all together, and we were given a long table in the back room, which was very cozy and added a sense of privacy to our little party. Our waitress was wonderfully attentive and did not lose her cool at all when our group began to get loud and boisterous. The staff even went out of their way to print up menus without prices at my request, since the dinner party was my treat. We were also the last to leave, so of course, we didn't experience any delays in getting the check. Service was excellent! All in all, my entire group loved the experience and my party was great fun thanks to Caravan of Dreams! In retrospect, the only thing I really regret is not leaving a bigger tip.

Cons: The seating isn't the most comfortable

the second we entered, the manager seated us immediately. we ordered with a prompt, friendly waitress, who brought our delicious nachos in under a minute. our entrees were brought at the speed of light and our table was in awe of the incredible food.

then, things fell apart. our table was somehow switched to another waitress' section. we begged for dessert menus, in hopes of taking something sweet home. we waited 15 minutes for the menus, and another 15 to order. eventually, we got our check, but even after paying, we waited a half an hour for the desserts to be brought to the table - and that was only after we asked for *again*.

the food was so incredible, i could not believe it but i'm not sure that i could suffer through that again. it's one of the saddest things of this day and age.

Vegans love it for its selection of vegan and raw dishes prepared a la Mexican. The food is definitely fresh and ample. The atmosphere leans towards bohemian with a few hints of class-- live piano music plays in the background. The wine list includes an Austrian reserve blaufraenkisch red wine and a chenin blanc in the $20-25 range-- rare finds at such restaurant prices. Logistics and infrastructure require an upgrade. My reservation for 4 was at 8:30pm, yet we were not seated until 9:20pm. Had I not requested seating, my party would have been forgotten. There were not enough wine glasses to serve the wine, so we had to wait an extra hour until they were available. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and friendly. The owner is quite attentive and even provided us a discount due to the long waits. The experience was good, but the details of service were lacking.

My boyfriend and I tried Caravan for the first time the other night, and loved it! We had the miso deluxe appetizer & the tropical thai salad, with a chai latte & a green tea with mint. AMAZING freshness and flavor. If you love to be healthy, and are tired of the same old thing, definitely swing by Caravan. You'll love it.

as a raw vegan, it's pretty hard to get delicious food in this city. caravan of dreams has delicious and creative raw and living entrees, with a fun ambience. the only thing i hated was the music - a sort of ravi shankar-ish sitar, REALLY annoying, but other than that the service was friendly, though i agree it's not the fastest in the world. oh! one thing to look out for - if the prices seem a little steep, it's because the portions are GIGANTIC. you may want to just split one with a friend :) by way of appetizers, the nachos are fantastic, and the brownie dessert is too. viva la caravan of dreams!

As a non-vegetarian, I have frequently dined at many vegetarian/vegan restaurants courtesy of my vegetarian sister and Caravan of Dreams is one such place. Other menu items are for the most part okay, but to ensure that we won't be disappointed... we usually order the quesadillas which are mmmmm, mmmm good... As indicated in the title, don't plan on being somewhere else immediately afterwards. Though you are seated promptly, the waitstaff is a little slow when it comes to acknowledging your presence, remembering your orders, and bringing your check. On the other hand, the kitchen staff is quite quick in turning the food around once your order does arrive.. Overall, a decent place to get some food.

Pros: Quick Food Turnaround

.

The food varies in consistency. Some dishes are good some days and not on others. The paella manages to stay ok.

Their fruit shakes and smoothies are refreshing in the summer, however avoid the desserts. The desserts are either bland or too sweet.

Because it is one of the few raw food establishments in the city there is a sense of preening self righteousness, as though you should be glad they exist.

I have eaten at Caravan several times, and it's a hit-and-miss. Some of the food is pretty tasty, some hardly edible (unfortunately I don't have enough writing space to give detailed examples). Overall the place needs much improvement: the seating is not particularly comfortable, the staff is non-responsive, it's very noisy - the ceiling is low so normal conversation sounds louder, and add to that loud music, a noisy AC, and a very noisy blender that's right near the eating area - and you've got one big headache. In a word, Caravan caters to a forgiving crowd that cares more about it being vegan than tasty. On the positive side, the prices are reasonable. So, if you're looking for a vegan place for a reasonable price, go to Caravan, and don't expect too much.

Edited 5/19/08. I wrote the above 5 years ago after going there several times in previous years. Last time I was there was several years ago, and I still recall the terrible experience I had. I took my mother out to dinner (she eats Kosher and I thought this will be good for her) and the food was so terrible that I was totally embarrassed. Really really bad. We hardly finished the stuff on our plates and left as soon as we could. She looked at me like I was crazy for taking her there. NEVER AGAIN. Might be ok for a poor vegan college student who wants to "eat out", but that's about it. Two thumbs down, way down.

Pros: reasonably priced

Cons: bland terrible food

A great place to have very tasty, living food. Caravan can be a little slow sometimes, but more than makes up for it in the quality of the food and the care of wait staff. This restaurant is a must for serious vegetarians visiting Manhattan!

Went here with a few friends and found the food excellent. All our dishes were extremly flavorful and not too pricey. If you are not in a rush, as the waitstaff is not quick, this is a great place!

My boyfriend and I are regulars here and neither of us are vegan, but we LOVE it! I have never been disapointed by anything I order. The food is always fabulous! The wait staff is a little flaky expecially about bringing the check but it is worth it for the food. Everything is great but try the Lover's Salad!

As a full-fledged non-vegetarian, I was quite reluctant to go to vegan restaurant but as my three companions were all vegetarian, I didn't have much of choice. But much to my surprise, the food was wonderful - I would strongly recommend the Open-faced mushroom sandwich. The service was good, with the exception of my waitor who seemed to take his time but the manager more than made up for service with his friendliness......A GREAT PLACE for couples or groups and for vegetarians or non-vegetarians............
