I've tried to eat here about five times in the 3 years I've worked a block away. I absolutely hate going to LaScala's. Everytime I hope that just maybe, it isnt as bad as I thought, but no everytime I go its worse that the time before.

I used to like this place a lot, but the service just isn't what it used to be. I always ordered the same appetizer, on my last visit I did the same and it was served to me differently than usual. The bartender who I had never seen before insisted to me that is how they always had been served. They took them off the bill, but I did not like his insistence at trying to prove me wrong. Food was always just average, but with poor service now too, I've changed my happy hour spot.

We don't get out of the suburbs too often but were going to the Walnut St. Theater and needed someplace close. Read some old reviews and tried to move to another restaurant but they were closed due to a private party. Thank God! The food at La Scala was excellent. There were 4 of us and we had the mussels (excellent red wine sauce), the bruchetta (creative and tasty) and the chopped salad that was HUGE and delicious. I had a special, the Trio Seafood, with abundant scallops, a lobster tail and lobster ravioli. It was wonderful. My tablemates LOVED their dinner. Our waitress was unobtrusive and yes, they did try to remove the plates too soon but we did tell them we were going to the theater. Nice atmosphere. Really a pleasant treat and will absolutely make the long trip into town to eat here again.

Nice decor, mostly good food, but they take the plates away too soon! One person in our party was still chewing and his food was whisked away! My hubby went to the bar for a drink and his desert was take away uneaten. The calamari was way stinky, I couldn't get past the smell to eat it. Everything else was good, especially the chicken cannelloni and chocolate layer cake..The wait staff mixed up all the checks and was kind of slow and bumbling but overall we had a nice time there.

I can not believe how terrible the service is. My wife has at least one source which clearly indicates that management of the restaurant is writing posative reviews for themselves. ABSOLUTELY UNCONSCIONABLE!

Every time we have been to this place the service has been really disrespectful, and we have experienced racial discrimination by at least two waitors. We have never seen anything like this before and will never be back. Our server made some comments which were completely inappropriate and racially discriminating, and I will not repeate what was said here...its too shameful.

Our food was served cold and tasted warmed up. The salads were ok, but that was the only good part. our night was ruined. NEVER AGAIN!!! This place sucks!

Set there with a colleague, I ordered a sald a pasta. unfortunately one of the tomatos served as part of the salad was... fusty. Nevermind that, i called the waitress to tell her that i took a bite off a fusty tomato so without me asking for anything other than taking the salad away she called her boss (the owner i assume). The woman comes to the table and said rudely "I heard you wanted to talk to me" so i said "well, no, but if you're here, there was a fusty tomato in my salad, thought you might want to know" and she said, "I just tasted it myself, nothing was fusty." I didnt argue, I just felt so offended by the gesture, we paid and left. Right when we went away, a lady with her two kids who were sitting right beside and whitnessed the whole scene, stopped me and said "i just couldnt believe how rude she was", i will never ever get back to this restaurant, neither any of you... the pasta wasnt anything to write home about by the way.

As with many center city restaurants you have to balance the good with the bad and this restaurant is no exception. We've always had exceptional good food here but the service is spotty. Some nights very good and others very bad. But the atmosphere is really nice and cozy.

I definitely DO NOT recommend this restaurant to any of my friends!!! When our mediocre pasta entrees came and we asked for some cheese, the waiter just disappeared on us. After asking another waiter to bring our cheese, it FINALLY came when the food was cold.

I was so shocked that our plates were taken away while I was still chewing on the food, that I was too embarassed to say anything to the waiter. I feel that we had been rushed out. Meanwhile, the restaurant was not busy with only 10% of occupancy.

After the food was forced to be taken away, we had to wait ENDLESSLY for the check to come. By the way, there were no water refills.

The restaurant was empty and service was sparse. WHAT WOULD THEY DO WITH A CAPACITY CROWD?!

For a menu of this price point, SOME level of service is expected!!!

This establishment seemed to lack any experienced management.

(re: JFK BLVD location) Delivery service is terrible. It always takes over 1 hour to arrive. I don't mind the long wait, but it annoys me that they always tell me 30 minutes when they know it will take 1 1/2 hours. And my food never arrives hot. I can understand warm, but COLD is unacceptable. When I called to complain, the guy was rude. Seriously, take your business elsewhere!

We ordered delivery from La Scala's and they immediatly put me on hold twice. When I finally got my order in, they informed me honestly that it would take an hour for delivery, which is fine for a correct order of hot food. But I got neither and it took even longer than that. 2 hours after I ordered and called back once, the order showed up with no mozzarella on the Caprese salad, a cold stromboli, and cold Rigatoni alla Vodka. They were fine with taking the food off the order (paid on the phone with CC), but they actually sent the delivery guy to pick it back up!! They actually made him drive all the way back. Wow. Yet his attitude was the most positive element of the experience!

All in all, bad food service, handled customers poorly. I don't recommend a 3 hour wait and debate for dinner to be delivered.

I went to Lascalas with a group of friends after work.. We sat outside enjoyed drinks, appetizers and pizza. The food and service were both really good. I will definitely be back to try dinner... But this place has great outdoor dining. Most places in the city you feel cramped, that is not the case here... Sometimes you feel as if you are forgotten when you are outside, but our server was very attentive. HIghly recommend for outdoor dining...

My first review but this place was so bad that I had to warn others. My wife, 3 grown daughters and two sons-in-law went for rest. week. We dine out often. Made res. thru open table for 6:15. They wanted a cr. card to hold the table. We refused and they said "OK". Arrived at 6:00 and had good drinks at the bar. Table was not ready until 6:45. Service was terrible. Slow to take our order and slow to deliver appetizers. At 8:00 we finally got up and left not having been served our entree. The worst part was that no one checked on us. No water re-fills, etc. You would think that someone would have come to the table and checked on us. Don't wast your time. There are plenty of good places to eat in Phila. and this is NOT one of them!

It's a decent restaurant, but I had La Scala's on my list of restaurants to try b/c I was under the impression it was above average; I was wrong. And in a city with a plethora of really fabulous Italian restaurants, there's really no reason to go out of your way to eat there. The inside decor is cozy enough with the left side being far nicer than the right side (watch that, they act like there's no difference when they seat you), but let's focus on the most important subject - the food. My father and I both ordered rather different pasta dishes which amazingly looked eactly the same on the plate. My cavatappi was supposed to be "tossed with eggplant and mozzarella sauteed with tomato and garlic" ~ something along those lines. Let's just say that I could barely even see my pasta under the 10 pounds of sauce it was drowning in. I got the impression it was a light and tasty vegetarian pasta dish, but the sauce was SO goopy and so extraordinarily heavy, and for some reason way too smoky tasting - I felt like I couldn't even take more than a few bites. I was really disappointed. The service was okay and all in all, if you had blindfolded me and then removed my blindfold at the end of the meal, I probably would have guessed we were at a Friday's on Italian night. Not worth the $; not worth the ridiculous caloric intake with rather mediocre dishes. Just my experience...

From its earlier roots as Apollo, LaScala's has morphed itself into a wonderful fine dining experience. The menu is varied and very interesting. The "Starters" are delicious and large enough to share. I especially enjoyed the clams. The sauce was amazing! I sopped up every drop with my homemade foccacia bread, which was terrific all by itself. We, in our group, shared our entrees and sides. It was an Epicurean delight! The Gnocchi Caprese was light and flavorful. The Grilled Ribeye Steak with Gorgonzola was tender and succulent. The Baked Chicken and Spinach Canneloni came out bubbling and smelling wonderful. Its flavor certainly lived up to its billing. The Rigatoni Ala Vodka was my own choice, and was one of the best meals I have ever had anywhere. It is easy to tell that LaScala's has a very talented kitchen, and uses only the very finest of ingredients. Ahhhhh one last suggestion.... Please try the risotto! I have never tasted any that came even close to being this good.

The atmosphere at LaScala's is cozy and casual. Our server's name was Kara, and everything she suggested was great. She could not have been more attentive.

This visit to LaScala?s was our fifth, and we are already anxiously anticipating our next!

In six months this year, due to its convenience I have eaten at La Scala's about a dozen times for both lunch and dinner. So I have a pretty good idea of what's going on at the restaurant, except for the bar area as I rarely drink alcohol. Here are my impressions and recommendations.

Quick list for good choices if you're going:
Pizza is always very, very good. You cannot go wrong.
The Mediterranean salad (lobster, crab meat, shrimp, veggies) is a standout in this department.
Sauteed Tilapia, and indeed any fish special, is always yummy.
Mussels appetizer is gracious proportioned and delicious
Pasta dishes have always proven a disappointment. See below.
Bread with oil or butter is good munching

La Scala's and its cross-corner neighbor, Jones, both seem to be restaurants with a heritage that they can't quite live up to. In the case of Jones, it's comfort food that just isn't that comforting. Similarly, La Scala's is the pizza place that wrote a fine-sounding Italian menu but hasn't yet delivered on the promised flavors. I think until you see some changes in the menu, you should order the items I and other reviewer suggest and avoid these dishes because even if some chef at La Scala's might cook them right, there isn't consistency across shifts, something that distinguishes a good kitchen from a great one.
Chicken Marsala sometimes swims in a thin, slighly flavored sauce. Maybe the pasta was not drained or the sauce was not properly reduced, the execution is flawed. The sauce also lacks richness of flavor available in one national chain. The generously-proportioned chicken is tender but neither breaded nor bare. Saltiimbocca and picatta renditions were, thankfully, removed from the menu. The Steak Salad sounds promising with avocado, but each time I ordered it, the avocado was not ripe. I noticed but apparently the garde manger didn't. Again, quality control. You may be presented with a slab of uncut meat atop the greens. Poor show, as is the Mista (mixed salad) which suffers from a lack of flavor, except the sharp provolone piled on top which doesn't taste good. Service is quite friendly and enthusiastic, but not consistent. Some waiters disappear (I don't see a house manager to correct this). So catch your waiter's eye while you can, because it might be the last change you have to get another soda.

Again, stick to the pizza or the fish dishes and avoid the dishes no one has complimented them on and you'll be happy. I'll write again if things change soon.

After reading the great reviews, I decided to try the place with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner. THey have indoor and outdoor seating and we ate outside since the weather was nice. Our waiter was extremely nice and took very good care of us. We had made a reservation for 7, but were an hour late because of traffic getting into the city - we called to say we'd be late; they told us it wasn't a problem (we went on a Wed night). We were seated right away and our orders were taken. The bread was to die for! A few different kinds warm from the oven..SO GOOD. I ordered the homemade gnocchi caprese - one of the best meals I've ever had (and this is after returning from a 4 month Italy trip!). My boyfriend got the Italian trio with 3 different meats over rigatoni pasta which he loved. The menu is reasonably priced and the food was perfect. I ordered a cappucino after dinner - havn't had one as good as Italy's since I've been home, and I thought $4 was a little much for one, but it was in a huge mug and it was perfect!

Best part - they have a parking garage above the restaurant -normally $9 an hour! $14 for 2 - but the restaurant pays for it! Ask your server about the free parking - they'll give you a voucher you hand to the parking attendant.

The atmosphere, service, food and parking couldn't have been better. We will definitely be back!

After catching a quick cooking spotlight on CN8 one night which featured executive chef Joe Nocella whipping up a veal rolantini dish, me and my family decided to give LaScala a try....one of the best decisions I made this year. Since then I have returned there once a week only to be delighted over and over again. My mission...to try everything on the menu. I have made it through about 3 quaters of the menu and each dish is better than the next (although I am quite partial to any veal dish this guy makes....to put it simply.....fuggetaboutit). But to just mention one meal would be doing this place an injustice. Lasagna, veal, chicken marsala, shrimp, jumbo crab cake with tomato risotto, blackened salmon, almond encrusted tilapia....oh and did I mention that they have one of the best pizza's in town? That is saying alot in Philadelphia. I like it so much that I decided to have LaScala cater my 25th anniversarry party this summer. Needless to say I did not have any leftovers to take home with me. So whether you are in the mood for a salad with a grilled ribeye sandwhich for lunch with the guys, or a romantic dinner with your significant other, LaScala has it all.

They have the best Linguine Diavula (sp.)... it was so good that I went back the next day for the same dish.... my friend had the Award Winning "Cheesesteak Stromboli" and it was SO good, too.... The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. We didn't have a long wait.... we sat at the bar. It's a really nice atmosphere with huge flat screen TVs in the dining area for entertainment. The food at LaScala's is superior. I especially enjoy their "Almond Encrusted Tilapia Topped with (a large pile of) Crabmeat." The servings are more than generous, and the side dishes are always interesting and tasty. The bread is excellent. The staff is efficient and pleasant. It is very convenient and there is also the added bonus of free parking on the weekends.

I love this place! LaScala's has the most wonderful food, and at a surprisingly reasonable price. The location makes it a great place for any of you who might be working in the area, or visiting the historical sites. I have been there several times now and there is always something new and yummy on their menu. We always make it a point to stop there for a meal when we are in Philly. Also...it is very "kid friendly."

My friends and I decided kind of late one Saturday night to head into the city for dinner. We decided to get off at Market East and just walk around until we found something. After a few blocks, I saw La Scala's, and after reading the menu on the door, we decided to try it. We were seated promplty even though it was a Saturday night, and our waitress was excellent. We arrived with 3 people, and waited about 30 minutes for 2 others, and they were very acomodating!
For appetizers we had calamari (which wasn't the greatest-but ok) and the eggplant rolantini (which was delicious!) They also served great Italian bread and focaccia bread. So, after that I was full and only ordered the chopped salad for dinner-which was also very tasty. My friends had the french onion soup, another salad, and the chicken canneloni-I tasted everything and was very pleased with all the dishes.

If you are looking for a new restaurant try this! I had the grilled lamb chops & my husband had the shrimp & scallops. Both were to die for, and cooked perfectly! The mozzarella sticks are the best I've ever had, not to mention our waitress could not have been any sweeter! We will frequent this spot!

I had never been to this resturant before but was drawn in by the decor. When I walked in everything smelled so good! The entire department from my job was with me and there was total silence while we were eating the only words were this food is soooooo good. Even the sauce for the mozarella sticks was fantastic. I highly recommend this place for lunch and dinner, I will definitly be back for a date night!!!
