I met a friend for lunch at this restaurant near Columbia University and enjoyed it much more than expected given the horrible reviews I had read...
The service was ok-not incredibly attentive but passable. We each had the prix fix lunch which was PLENTY of food. It was a bit pricey for lunch (around 17$) however it was three courses. Pate starter was a nice start with delicious toast. Sauteed salmon with crispy skin was delicious over lentils. Vanilla cheesecake just ok-a bit dry. My friend had cold gazpacho which was said had a spicy kick.
Was a fun and tasty lunch overall.

Cons: expensive lunch

Tonight my husband and I ordered the bouillabaisse special ($21.00 a plate). My plate contained 4 mussels, 2 shrimp, some tiny mess in the middle that might have been a very small piece of fish, a slice of potato and sprig of fresh rosemary. The most expensive item on the plate was probably the rosemary. It was also tepid. The total amount of food was equivalent to a small appetizer.

This was the most egregious bit of price gouging to which I have been witness. Maybe I don't get out much.

When we complained, the manager told us that that was "what they always send out on Friday".

We left and went to Henry's and had a GIANT bowl of mussels for $16.00. Very nice atmosphere AND you don't get

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Smallest portions on earth

... if you like to be insulted, looked down upon and have your needs ignored. A great plus is the management's indifference to complaints.
Let's see how long it would take the management to mark this "not helpful"

I go out dining all of the time and Le Monde is one of my favorite places. It looks nice, good service and good value on the food. I am not sure what the over priced comments are all about. Peppercorn steak at that price is a great deal, not to mention five dollar beautiful desserts.

Great restaurant! Variety of options, pretty moderately priced for a French place. The service is mediocre and I'm guessing this is because they serve students all the time.

Weekend brunch here is excellent. A lot of people say something cockeyed, talk out of the side of their mouth about the french, but word, they can cook. Le Monde remains the shining star of morning side heights. Their french toast transcends any simplistic bread and egg formula, it is milky, sweet, and yet not in any way undercooked. It is as complex a french toast as you'll find in the city or the Hamptons.
Their ground beef is excellent, their burgers are succulent and full, an excellent burger for dine in or take out, tends to be on the rare side so adjust accordingly.
Their smolked salmon, although occassionaly absent, is always a tremendous cut and their Eggs Scandanavian was phenomenal with roasted potatoes that are cooked nearly perfectly, soft inside with a baked crisp outer shell, and a hint of rosemary. It has been replaced with a meal even more sublime, a potatocake and salmon which was a perfect dish, potato pancakes beneath which make a great base for a display of the cut of salmon, so the salmon must be fresh and tasty. Rather than hiding in sauces they display the cut of fish. Truly excellent.
The bartenders treat house vodka as a sacred nectar of the gods to be used very sparingly. They make you order a double to get what passes for a normal drink in most other places and for $18 it's simply not worth it. It's short sighted b/c a decent first drink will make you much more loose with your wallet and likely to order another one (or two).

We have been there a few times. Sometimes everything is fine, sometimes not. Just like any other place. This time it was different. I have been insulted in my life before. Not like this. Not only were we humiliated and laughed at, we were pretty much told that we were being and would be discriminated against. And if we felt like that was not fair, we could leave. The way the Jennifer the manager said, "have a nice day", really sounded like, "Go blip yourself". All we asked was a table where a disabled person could be sitting. While telling us "no", they, BEFORE our eyes seated 2 people there and looked at us with a spiteful pleasure. Quite sick if you ask me. Oh BTW, you can write them "feedback" on their site all you want. They will not grace you with a reply. Please do not give them your money, they do not deserve it.

So I went to go visit my friend uptown here and I was actually surpised how nice it was.

Claire, my friend, suggested we go to Le Monde to eat and it was really a perfect place. The setting/decor was unmatched, truly spectacular.

I am suprised to read the other reviews because I really didn't think the food was overpriced for what it was, I see the reviews are from almost a year ago so maybe something has changed? The portions were perfect in both size and flavor. I may just have to venture back up here for this restaurant alone.

This place is a BIT overpriced, but I was overall pretty happy with my meal there. The have a big wine selection, and their french snail for an appetizer is FANTASTIC, highly recommend it. Their dishes are yummy and well-presented, the service is attentive. If you're looking for a relatively quiet, low-key, but classy place to dine. I would recommend to anyone

On a beatuiful Saturday afternoon whilst walking past Le Monde with a friend, we decided, why not? The space is very attractive. That was all. The service was mundane. I ordered a vodka; the glass was the size of a specimen bottle. After ordering a couple of more drinks, we decided to order some food. This is a paltry excuse for French food. When the bill arrived, to say that it was pricey is an understatement. We were both very underwhelmed by Le Monde. You can't eat pretty spaces.

What good is a restaurant when the only thing you can recommend is the deep red leather and dark wood? We stopped in for light refreshment and snack, and felt like our wallets were stolen ($98 + tip for two of us). The staff were beautiful and polite on the surface, but quite soulless. For the exhorbitant price, we received food that barely qualified as mediocre and seriously overpriced, small, watered-down drinks. I know this is a Columbia joint, but I thought the students and staff had better taste than this. Perhaps Le Monde is bending to the Mid-west taste bud? But, good French food, says the true New Yorker, it is NOT!

I've eaten here many times, and haven't had any of the bad experiences described in other reviews. Service is sometimes slow, especially on busy nights, but that's my only real complaint. The menu isn't especially imaginative, but the restaurant does the French bistro standards well, and it's a pleasant place to eat. Weekly specials tend to be particularly good.

My boyfriend and I went there on Valentine's day as it is one of our favorite places--nice ambience, friendly service, caters to his meat tastes and my veggie tastes, and a decent meal without having to break the bank. However, I must admit that over the 3-4 times we have been there, it can be your luck that day in terms of the tastiness of the food. His risotto with sea bass was alright--the risotto was good but the fish was not as fresh as it could have been. And my veggie options were pretty sad too--the lasgna was not spiced well and lacked flavor and taste. And for a French place, the dessert was disappointing--we ordered black and white chocolate mousse with a biscuit crust or something like that. Take a chance--it might be good or if not, you know what to expect.

I've been to this restaurant several times and, alternately, I've had one of the best steaks I've ever tasted and one of the worst pieces of fish (sea bass) I've ever been served. I was there recently and ordered the sea bass with a red wine sauce and mushroom risotto. To be fair, the mushroom risotto was delicious - cooked perfectly - not pasty, not runny. Just perfect. And the red wine sauce was superb. But that sea bass. That fishy, rubbery, not very fresh sea bass. Ruined the meal. But I would give this place a shot. The ambiance is very sidewalk cafe French - especially in the Summer when there is seating outside. And the service is usually competent and friendly.

Everything about Le Monde is terrible. Both service and food were absolute garbage. We've never seen such disregard for the customer. We can honestly say we have had better meals at Tom's across the street. One of us got the cassoulet and it was the most wretched concoction we have ever seen. If we wanted a dry sausage in tomato paste we could have made it in the dumpster out back for a fraction of the price. We did however, despite the server's COMPLETE ineptitude, mange to pick a decent wine out of the rather large list. The space is "nice" and other people seemed to be having a good time. Overall, one might drop in if the weather is terrible and there is no other option, but we wouldn't recommend it.

Well after reading some of these reviews i am shocked. I have been going to lemond for about 4-5 years now & have only had good experiences.
I understands that some people got sick from some seafood, don't people realize that is is not always the restaurants fault!!!!!!!!
I am in the industry so am very picky about where i go & i have always had good food & service at Le Monde.
The wine & beer lists are great & the menu is extensive so there is always something different to choose.
The hanger steak with the Red wine sauce is one of my favorites. i take friends there & they have had only good things to say.
I sometimes go for brunch, there is often a wait on a sunday, that doesn't bother me i just have one of the cocktails they offer while i wait.
Yes service isn"t as good on brunch but i guess that might be because they are so busy.
Well for all you people who didn't like it, i wish you could have the experience i have when i go there.
I will be going there for years i am sure.

Want to get a food intoxication? Dine at Le Monde! After a dinner there with friends, the three of us who took seafood or fish were sick all night (sick meaning seriously sick). I told the manager about it in the morning; he didn't seem too fussed about it, didn't apologize at all, just thanked me for letting him know. And now I learn that other friends went there the following night, had fish, and got sick! Obviously Le Monde totally ignored what I told them and kept their stock of poisoned food. In short, if you want to spend $50 on a meal and throw it all up during the night, go to Le Monde!

My husband and I just had brunch at Le Monde. By far the worse service I have ever experienced. We waited over 20 minutes to get a cup of coffe and forget about the wait we had to endure to get a second cup, (not to mention the multiple times we had to ask). We had to ask 3 times and wait over 30 minutes to get our check, the whole time having dirty dishes crampled on our table. The food was average but it will not be remembered based upon the service. I am not totally surprised since I know this restaurant is under same management as Cafe D'Alsace where we had a similar experience.

I swore that I wasn't going to another restaurant without checking user reviews! But I did.

Le Monde was a dissapointment.

The appetizer (house pate) was fine. It was served in middle of table so we could share. The food runner very carefully arranged the small table in order to put the plate down, and still leave us room to reach our side plate, water glass, etc. When the pate plate was ready to clear, i purposefully left my used cutlery on the plate to see if they'd take it away. That's one little way that I judge a restaurant - will they give you fresh cutlery? Nope, the waiter came by and took my used cutlery off of the pate plate and placed it on my sideplate. If I'd been a bit faster, I would have asked him if they were running out of cutlery, is that why i had to save mine like we were at camp?

We were served our main course - husband and i both opted for lamb chops (you can't say r..c.k in a review?). It was nicely presented with the chops placed over vegetables. I noticed right away that my portion of lamb was very fatty. The flavor was great, it was well prepared, and cooked medium rare as requested, but what's with the big chunks of fat? The chef doesn't know how to trim? So when the waiter comes to check on dinner, i tell him that the dish is very tasty but that the chop were very fatty. I show him the large amounts of fat on my sideplate that I had trimmed myself. He said he'd tell the kitchen. A few minutes later, he returns to tell me "that's how it was delivered". Hmm. Nobody watches Gordon Ramsey? How about a sharp knife and a few minutes of prep?

All in all, not terrible, just not great. The service was not terrific, and I've come to a decision that I'm just not tipping 15% or 20% automatically anymore, I'm sick of this. Treat us like you want to be treated, and I'll put money in your pocket. Take orders like you're at McDonald's, and hte money stays in mine.

Cons: indifferent staff

The hostess was rude and it took ten minutes to get the waiters' attention after we were seated. The quality of the food was OK, but it came out late and cold. I've been living in this neighborhood for the past seven years, and this restaurant used to be pretty good, but during the past year it has taken a sharp dive and is definitely not worth wasting your money on. I have experienced some bad service at French Roast, which is under the same management, but the service at Le Monde is by far the worst I've experienced. Avoid it at all costs.

Our waiter was the worst server I have ever had, and I eat out in the city pretty much every night. He didn't check refill drinks or check up on us ever. He was rude to my girlfriend and I for no apparent reason and to top off the cake I just found out that he double charged my credit card. I'm not sure if it was out of spite or incompetence, but when I called up the restaurant to complain about it I didn't get much sympathy from the manager. Apparently this happens all the time there.

i was really not looking forward based on the things i've read on websites, but we had a good time and great service. funny waiters. he had a big group. i was ready for the 20% to be added automatic. i was ready for ok at best food, but everyone enjoyed their food. there's some whacky burger that is stuffed with ribs and duck liver, etc. seemed intense. i tasted it (somone else go it) and it was really good. so...to each his/her own. good luck

Don't go to Le Monde expecting great service because the chances you'll get it are slim. The food, however, is excellent. The last time we went there with friends, we were basically abandoned by our waitress. After taking our order she never came back. The food was brought by one of their servers. No one asked if we needed anything else at any point through the meal. Pity for them. If they had asked, we would ordered a second round of drinks and some dessert at the end. We were lucky to get our bill.

Despite the poor service, the food is always delicious. That's what keeps us coming back to Le Monde. If you want a scrumptious meal with hardly any attention from the wait staff, it's the perfect place for lunch and the occasional dinner.

Pros: Very good food, nice ambience.

Cons: Lousy service, can get crowded on weekend nights.

.

The service was well below average: slow and apathetic. Without exaggeration, it took 10 minutes for drinks to arrive after ordering, and 30 minutes for appetizers. If they had been busy, it would be explainable, if not excusable, but they were not busy. I counted somewhere close to 25 customers, including our party of three. The manager and staff were shamelessly self-important, responding with incredulity when we mentioned the extremely long wait for our apps. We wrote off their behavior as pseudo-French (much like the food), and pressed on through our desserts. Two and a half hours after being seated we received our check, only to find that they had already added on a 20% gratuity. Had we been a party of 6-8 or more, had we been obnoxiously drunk, had we ordered an inordinate amount of food and wine I might understand why someone would be cautious and add a gratuity, but we were a party of three, who were not drunk (it took way too long to get a round of drinks in the first place), nor were we obnoxious (the three of us are servers and we know how to respect other servers), and our check was under $120, before they added the gratuity; therefore, there really was no clear reason for them to add the gratuity, other than for some unfathomable bias, or inexplicable idiocy. Had I felt that the service warranted the tip I wouldn't have had a problem, but it didn't. To be sure, we will never go back, and to be honest, I have told my other friends not to go there either.

Pros: Outdoor seating was nice.

Cons: Everything else.

If you are stuck uptown, this would be a last resort. The service was average, although our particular waiter was nice, the rest were a little under or overbearing. Compared with actual French cuisine and even some other French restaurants downtown, the food was below average and not worth the price. French cuisine is known for its ambience and adoration, this place was as generic as could get. Overall, it depends on personal taste but I would only return if there is no other option.

They brought out the wrong food, the waiter didnt check up often. The food is actually quite nice though, though the whole ambience is ripped off from Balthazar and Pastis (and not very well done.) However, the hot chocolate is ridiculous, and GET THE FOIS GRAS RISOTTO, shouldnt be an appetizer, its very filling!

Nov. 2005 - I recently sat down to eat in the restaurant and had a stunningly inattentive waiter, whom we had to get up and flag down when he kept hanging around the bar flirting with some woman. And when I called the other night to order a meal to go, the woman on the phone was short with me, told me I'd have to go there in person just to place the order then wait around for a half hour, then hung up on me. The food here is very good. If the service was at all decent, it would be worth the price. But in my experience that hasn't been the case.

This is one of the best places in the neighborhood - it's great for brunch or dinner, good atmosphere, great food, ok prices. One of my favorite spots around Columbia's campus!

This place thinks it's much better than it is - and the staff acts like it. They were pushy, busboys picked up our food before we were even finished, and then the waitress kept coming back to see if we'd paid and were ready to leave (there were no people waiting to be seated!). Not a good experience, unless you like bad service.

I went here this week w/ my sister and had a good experience- got seated right away at an outdoor table, had a sweet waitress, very good entree. The only negative was the creme caramel dessert which had an odd taste. I've also been to le Monde just for dessert (check out the dessert counter inside- lots to choose from!) and once just for a "snack" (onion soup- yum!- and salad). Nice atmosphere, didn't experience any snooty attitude as some raters have and the prices were very reasonable! I'll be back!

I had not read the reviews of Le Monde before going there and am surprised to see all the negative comments. My experience could not have been more different. My girlfriend and I remarked on the good service several times during dinner - our waiter was not only polite but always there when we needed him, yet not overbearing. We were given a full carafe of water at our table in addition to the drinks we ordered. The steak and rack of lamb were tasty with generous portion sizes; likewise the crepes for dessert. Maybe they're under new management (?) or maybe they've taken all the negative reviews to heart, but the service and food were excellent and I would recommend Le Monde to anyone in the area.

We go to this place a lot, especially with out of town guests. I love the salads and the tuna burger is amazing. Nice wine list. Nice outdoor seating area. They have a fabulous pastry chef!

The food is decent, but that's about it. The management is horrible, waiters mediocre, bus boys not trained. Expect a lot of atttitude and overall bad service. It's not rare that you won't recieve your water until the end of your meal, or your waiter will completely disappear for a good half hour, or you'll have your waiter switched once or twice on you without even knowing it, or your waiter will argue over their tips. It's okay for locals if your starving-- but then again, it's student food. Part of restaurant row where all the students dine and drink-- probably one of the more decent eateries-- but not for someone with discerning taste... or somewhere you take someone you want to impresss.

Took a group of friends here for Brunch Sunday. Brunch was good. Waitress was great. One of my guests some how lost her cell phone while dining there and when we went back (10 minutes later) to search, the Hostess was absolutely unhelpful and full of attitude. The only person who provided any help/concern was our waitress. Later, a call was placed to the Manager to follow-up on the cell & complain about the hostess...and the manager was equally as ill-mannered. Although the food was good, we wont return any time soon.

Better for brunch than dinner. Generous portions but not that great. Desserts were attractive--but tarts were hard as rocks!

I've only been here to this restaurant twice, the first, I had a smoked salmon sandwhich which was fairly good, but the service is less than to be desired. The wait staff really seem to take their own time to get to you, and both times, they place at lunch time was not busy. (The second time, I had moules frites, and though they give you a lot of mussels, the dish had essentially little or no flavor). Lastly, both times I had mesculun salad with the meal, but the lettuce seemed a little wilted. Be warned.

I live downtown but was visiting a friend on the Upper West Side and we had a great dinner here. It's a very pretty restaurant and we sat outside. The staff was unpretentious and helpful and I enjoyed the same fabulous bistro food I've had at Pastis! Great desserts too - it wasn't easy to choose. A nice restaurant and worth the trip uptown.
