My sister was in the emergency room here, she stayed in a bed that was an air matress all day. There was no bathroom in there, there was one in the hall. She was too sick to go to it so they bought her a bedpan. After she used it they left it sitting on the sink.I came to visit her several hours later and the used bedpan was still sitting on the sink. She had to use it again,so I dumped it down the sink drain. These people just plain don't care there was someone drawing blood from paitents that had been drinking I could smell it on her and she acted sort of strange. My sister complained about the bed being uncomfortable and the nurse told her this is a hospital its not surposed to be comfortable.

It's the little things: My Mom arrived at SRMC by ambulance from her nursing home to the ER. An orderly was very caring. Mom was cold and he brought her a blanket that had been warmed. Later when her chills continued, I asked a nurse for another warmed blanket. "We don't have those," she said. When I told her Mom had been given one earlier, she came back with one quickly, handed it to me without a word, and then reprimanded the orderly.
When I came back the next day at 5:30 p.m., Mom's lunch tray was over by the window, cold and untouched. (She is quite elderly and cannot walk.) Mom said she had not eaten all day. Several medical personnel had been in and out of her room all day, but no one took responsibility for feeding her. "Not my job."
At the nurses' station, a nurse asked the clerk where a patient's chart was, saying it seemed to have been misfiled. The clerk slammed books around as she searched and glared, muttering, "Well, tell the world!" It's this undertone of hostility that worries me. Good medical care requires teamwork. These folks seem so busy being spiteful and mean toward each other that they overlook caring for the patient.
I can't recommend them. Tip to other customers? Stay with your family member and guard their care.

My father was transported here by ambulance. He cares for a woman with Alzheimer's so she had to ride along with him. At the ER and again when he was checked into the hospital when he requested that they contact her son in Richmond to come and get her he was told they could not call long distance! He also asked the chaplain to call his local minister (not long distance), hoping to get someone from church to get her, but no call was made. He had to have her stay in the room with him for the 3 days he was admitted. This lack of care is unacceptable. The chaplain's office and social services department could not make a simple phone call!

This is a good hospital if you have a minor scrape or scratch. They misdiagnosed me on two occasions and I ended up at MCV. So if you are extremely ill, do yourself a favor and go to a bigger hospital from the get go. I'm referring to the ER!
