My husband and I are pizza lovers, so naturally before visiting NYC from Australia, I did a little research about where to get the best pizza. Grimaldi's came up time and time again so I made sure it was on our agenda.

So good. So fresh. Somehow 5 people managed to eat 3 large pizza's... and we were all on "diets." I thought I was waiting in line at an amusement park. As frustrating as it may be, bring someone ahead of time to hold your hand and make sure you don't leave and remember me saying it's so worth the wait. This sign there says something like we are not responsible if you choke on seeds or pits? I thought this was a joke. That's the greeting I get after standing here like a jack a$$ all day? I'll translate it ahead of time.... OUR INGREDIENTS ARE SO FRESH THE PITS ARE STILL IN OUR OLIVES. Fresh mozzarella like you've never had before. That sign has really put a damper on all my other pizza experiences because now I search and search for it and understand why no where else can get away with it.

I loved grimaldi's pizza but hate the wait and the way it feels like you are rushed out. The waiters are rude and arrogant. The place is way too small for their volume. Fortunately for me there is another pizza just as fabulous around the corner, Ignacio's.

I'll still visit Grimaldi's when I see no line. But thank goodness for the new option.

I took my parents who were visiting from Atlanta to Grimaldis last night. The line was not that long and we were expecting it anyway. There were no issues until the owner came out and starting taking people from anywhere in the line who fit the 4 person table requirement. The seating inside is so tight anyway, why not take two parties of 2 and sit them side by side and keep the line fair. He did this repeatedly and people who just could have entered the line were lucky and skipped the wait the rest of us were doing.

It seems as though the motto at Grimaldis is to take people and get them in and out within the shortest amount of time. We ordered 2 pizzas and the seating was so crammed that our 2nd pizza was put on the windowsill and we had to get up out of our chairs to get to it. The waiters too seem too arrogant to give proper service. I asked for water 3 times before 2 waiters come and start playing around and finally end up spilling the water on the floor and on my mother. No apologies were given.

They want you in and out of there as quick as possible so forget about trying to be relaxed while eating. The pizza is very good but unfortunately, with such a poor overall experience it completely overshadows the positive.
One would think with all the money they must make, the restaurant can appear in a better condition; I understand to preserve the original but clean the place up.

Anyway, I would not recommend this place - there are tons of other pizza places in the city that offer terrific pizza with great service.

I can confirm that the owner is a mean, bitter old man. Surprising, considering his success.

I've been to Grimaldi's many times before and had always enjoyed the experience. So when I tried to take a friend there the other day, I was surprised at how rude the elderly man out front was to me. Seriously, I'm a nice midwestern girl and I hadn't even started our interaction - he saw me standing around, looking at a sign saying that the take out line was the same as the regular line, and trying to figure out if I should wait or not, and he asked if I needed help. When I reiterated the take out policy and just asked him to confirm that it was true, our conversation devolved into him asking a series of pointless questions meant to make me feel stupid - "What does that sign say?" "What don't you understand about it?" "Oh yeah? How does it work at other pizzerias?" "Have you ever had a pizza here?" "What do you think people come for?"

There were plenty of opportunities for him to chill the f--k out and just say, sorry we don't do take out because of xyz reasons. And that would have been awesome. But belittling your customers is out of the question. Maybe it was a bad day for him, I noticed him barking at other people while we were standing in line. But I have a feeling that he's just a crusty old a--hole who doesn't give a s--t about what people think, because he'll always have a long line outside his pizzeria. Considering Lombardi's is just as good, I'll be taking my business there from now on.

This place is so cute...so cozy...a little tight and sometimes noisey but that is the beauty of it. Everyone in there sits next to each other, somewhat like a family style dining and you end up peeking over to see what the other table is having or even starting a conversation with them. Pizza is delicious...brick oven style. On top of the delicious pizza you get to see how its actually made so there isn't any funny business about it. The guys there are nice and try to accommodate you as much as possible. The walls are filled with the "who's who of the what's what" of the celebrity world, which is pretty entertaining as you wait for your pizza which i must add...does not take long even though it is made to order. I love this place and you will too!

I waited in a line for an hour and fifteen minutes just to order takeout. The pizza crust is wonderful, but the cheese ruined the whole pie. It was too salty to eat. I was very dissapointed. They don't answer phone calls and do not allow pre-order on takeouts. Ridiculous.

Reason why my friends and I didn't like the pizza was because we didn't get to stay long enough to eat it. We were treated extremely disrespectfully. Some old man who was in charge of the line outside began using profanity even before we stepped inside. When one of my friends stepped inside he singled him aside by applying physical force to his chest and said, "You, are you paying attention?" After we sat down, my friend had his arm around his boyfriend (plenty of heterosexual couples were doing the same thing) but the old man singled my two friends out on the basis of their sexual orientation, again placed his hand on my friend and said, "You better behave yourself our get out!" My friend was aghast and said you can't do that or we'll call the cops and the man began cursing saying "Mother f*cker, you call the cops!" etc... My other friend who was a girl called the old man over and expressed how he made us feel uncomfortable and because of that we would be leaving. The place is in Brooklyn, NY where such discriminatory action should not be expected. The Gay Community makes up a large percentage when it comes to participating in the economy and its contribution helps keeps small businesses like Grimaldi's alive. This is not over and will be made public.

pizza's great. i like their fresh ingredients. although my only complaint about the pizza is that the bottom and edges are seriously burnt many times i've been there. i believe people use cornmeal in the bottom of the pizza dough to eliminate this burning issue? but they don't here, and i had to cut them out myself. but the pizza is really awesome. i love it. the space is jam packed and crowded and hard to get into and out of your seats, especially if you're sitting in the middle/center tables. i've had good experiences here thus far, with waiters, with food, with service. been here a handful times, and today was the first time that some guy (maybe the owner) helped put on jackets for everyone as they were walking out. i thought that gave a very homey feel to the place.

Take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan for the best pizza in NYC!! Go around 11:30 if you want to miss the long lines, or call ahead and eat on the pier. Thin crust, fresh mozzarella and toppings, all cooked in a real brick oven -- magnificent! Yeah, it's crowded and you'll sit next to strangers, but that's part of New York - people watch, eavesdrop, and enjoy!

Pizza is okay, fresh mozzarella is used so it isn't greasy. Pepperoni is above average good. Pizza is thin crust but not spectacular overall. Nothing I'd wait in line for again. And after waiting in line, I get into a very small restaurant where they pack WAY too many people. Be prepared to sit next to a complete stranger because the tables are packed way too closely, with no room between neighboring tables. It's like sitting at a long cafeteria table next to people you don't even know. If you order more than one pie, there's barely enough room on your tiny table to fit the pizza and your plate. Atmosphere is sub-par, as is the service. Bring your own bottled water because nobody ever comes to ask if you want your drinks refilled.

We did not experience the rude service people have described and did not feel particularly rushed. Lines were long but moved surprisingly fast. The place itself was cramped and a bit noisy. Apart from the long lines I would say this was a pretty typical pizza parlor. You go for food and ambience is secondary in my opinion. I do not agree with the other reviewers who are critical about these peripheral aspects. More important to us was the food itself. Unfortunately, just average. There is so much good pizza in New York it takes a lot to stand out from the crowd. I do love coaloven pizza and the somewhat charred crust that is produced. You get that here and the crust was very tasty. I also liked the plain tomato sauce some folks complain about. Like others have mentioned however, the crust did not hold up in the center. A saggy center is just not acceptable to me so I cannot rate the pizza better than average. I am not a big fan of calzone. That said, the one I sampled here did not change my view. The crust was doughy and I did not care for it. The place is nicely situated across the bridge and near the water with a good view of Manhattan. If I was in the neighborhood, hungry and the line wasn't too long I would go back for sure. I would not go out of my way however.

I have had a lot of pizza and Grimaldi's is the best pizza I have ever had! I would go back to New York just to eat this pizza. It's right under the brooklyn bridge in brooklyn..with a green and red sign, can't miss it. Must Go!

Crust is crispy and flavourful from the oven. Sauce with fresh chopped tomatos. Fresh mozarella.

Hot and fresh every time. Light in weight, but not in taste.

The best pie without treking too far.

Pros: A great classic pizza

Cons: The menu is basic

I've lived in Brooklyn for a while and I've had MUCH better pizza both here and in the city. This place relies completely on hype and the "emperor's new clothes" factor. The pizza itself is VERY average (the base is cardboardy, the sauce is non-descript, the cheese is poor-quality and minimal), the queue is (inexplicably) long, the atmosphere is cramped and loud and the wait staff are arrogant and rude. There are much better, friendlier and more competent pizza places within walking distance of this place. I'd say forget the totally undeserved hype, leave the tourists to their foul tourist trap and go elsewhere and get decent pizza.

Gramadi's not only offers great pizza for an affordable price, but the experience of walking the interesting area of BUMBO in Brooklyn. They are right by the water so the experience at night is beautiful. Expect to wait in line - the wait is worth it!

While Grimaldis has great pizza the service is horrible. You are packed in like sardines. When you are seated you are met with rude waiters who have no personality whatsoever. One waiter told a group of women that "everyone waits for this pizza, if you want fast pizza go to Pizza Hut". If you want great pizza, go here but if you are looking for a nice place to eat, go to another location. I will try a different location. The pizza is not worth it...

Rule #1 when in NYC, walk the Brooklyn Bridge!!
Rule #1 when you get to Brooklyn, GO TO GRIMALDI'S PIZZERIA!!!!!
When we were walking on Fulton Street, we didn't even realized that we were passing Grimaldi's, because we were too busy staring at the Manhattan skyline. We walked down to the river, then back up and saw a huge line. We debated over whether we should stand in line or not. We said "what the heck" and did it anyway. By the time I had turned around, after about five minutes, the line was clear around the corner. Here's where it's interesting. The guy that was seating everyone, had it down to a "science". We were seated in 15 minutes. We thought we might be rushed, but we weren't.
Fun tip: go to the bathroom. Even if you don't have to "go", act like you have to. You have to walk right by (or stand, if someone is in there) the pizza chefs. It's so interesting watching how they make the pizzas! They too, have it down to a science.
The food is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband and I are such pizza critics!! We loved this place more than any pizza we've had here.

Pros: Best Pizza...not just in NYC, but EVERYWHERE!

The real Patsy Grimaldi's (the owners changed the name to Grimaldi's because they didn't want it to be confused with the Manhattan chain of Patsy's Pizza parlors), this eatery offers pizza that is chewy and lightly charred, which is just…
