Lowell High School is an academic high school which means the students needs an additional 60 credits in order to graduate at this school. They have an excellent sports program and student must take a pre-entrance exam to be considered for enrollment. Recently, they have changed the way they enroll students here. In the past, they took the top students who past the pre-entrance exam. People complained and now they have instilled a lottery type program.

LHS is one of the top high schools not only in the district but in the country. the education system is extremely variable with multiple math and science tracks for a student to choose, as well as several choices early on in a high school career for a student's class schedule. its also very intensive. math teachers have a reputation for being extremely hard the higher one is placed, which is both a help and a hurt. the sports program at Lowell is also quite impressive. cross-country, for example, has been the city champions in the girls division for over 15 years and would also be the same for boys but 2003 &2004 went to lincoln. the environment at lowell is very high-paced, so be wary if your child is very meek or timid, lowell could open him or her up or they could be lost in the crowd. also, admission is very rigorous so be ready for bad news. finally, if u want to base your decision on the outer apperance of the school...DON'T! the truth is, lowell is given about half what all other schools get per student, but dont worry about this either since both the active PTSA and Alumni Assoc. contribute major funds to keep the school operating.
In short, this school will prepare you for a four year experience anywhere (and i mean anywhere, last year [2005] a grad. went to tokyo university)

Lowell High School is one of the city's premier public high schools. It is very competitive and the admissions team is very selective on who gets chosen to attand. they have excellent programs for all of the students. They also have wonderful sports teams that do well in every category. Lowell prepares you well for a future at a four year University.

I was not really impressed with Lowell high School. I was expecting better form all of the rumors that I have heard. Sure it is better than some of the inner city public schools, but it was so big and kinda dingy. The classes that they offered could have been better for the reputation. I was a freshman at a private high school and was helping an upperclassman in the same subjects. It was a little embarrasing. Its a good school but does not deserve all the hype.

I'm a graduate from Lowell High School. It is known to be the best high school in San Francisco and admission in competitive. Most of the teachers are really good and the sports teams are also some of the best in the city. Classes and school schedules are more similar to college, than other high schools, so it's a good preparation for the university too.
