I have been eating here for over 20 years. I can truly say that Murrieta's is in my top 3 Mexican restaurants in San Diego. I love this place.

What makes a Mexican restaurant good? Of course, great tasting food is a must, but I also think great salsa, good rice and beans, and some tasty margaritas puts you over the top. A few special dishes that other restaurants don't have definitely helps too. So here is why Murrieta's is one of the best:

Food: 4.5
Salsa: 5
Rice and Beans: 5
Margaritas: 4
Special Dishes: 5 - Pollo Sonora*

*Pollo Sonora takes 30 minutes to make, so order it as soon as you sit down). You have to try this at least once, you'll love this chicken.

Also, this restaurant recently build an outdoor patio which is a perfect place to dine with friends, or just have some great chips, salsa and margaritas.

My husband and I have been going to Murrietas for years. We went there about 1 month ago and found that the food not only changed the the service in the bar was terrible. In the past we could sit down and find chips in front of us immediately, now you almost have to flag someone down! What has happened!! I wont go back anytime soon.

My favorite all time restaurant! Not to be confused with mArrietta's, which has a few locations around the San Diego area. Although at one time these restaurants where connected, I think the ownership split and mUrrietta's stayed singular and didn't branch out into a chain and it shows. Though there are still similarities, mUrrieta's has expanded there menu and the flavor and quality of the food is far better.
I've gone to many of the restaurants in Old Town ( a San Diego area known for it's mexican food) and Murrietta's is superior in my opinion. They start you off with hot, crispy tortilla chips, red and green salsa (both are delicious!), and hot carrots with onions and jalapenos. The salsa and carrots are zesty and fresh with a little kick but not too spicy. I like mixing the red and green salsas together because I can never decide which one is better! If you run out don't hesitate to ask for more, they are complimentary.
There is something for everyone on Murrieta's extensive menu - which has many beef, chicken and pork dishes, soups and salads, a variety of mariscos (seafood) entres, and a delicious variety of vegetarian options. Almost everything comes with rice and either refried or whole pinto beans.
All the traditional favorites are here, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, chili rellenos, chimichangas, etc.
Lots of entres to choose from; fajitas (beef, chiken, shrimp, or vegetarian), carne asada, beef ranchero, arroz con pollo, chili verde, pescado ranchero, camarones tequilla (shrimp wrapped in bacon cooked with a splash of tequilla, mmm...) and many other choices, combinations and variations. Prices range between $10-$20.
Ofcourse, beer, tequilla, margaritas, and cocktails are available for those interested.
The restaurant itself is clean and casual, with a comfortable atmosphere. There is a smaller bar area with a full menu for those who would like to dine there as well.
Murrietta's is a great place for friends and families alike.
