I have been living in the University City area now for several years and along with my sister and other neighbors as well; we have noticed a significant difference in phone service as compared to other areas of the city. The word is that the switches, lines and/or equipment are just too old and all under maintained by Verizon.

It seems whenever it rains as well as other times the phone lines can be scratchy with intermittent service or no service. After jumping through some hoops several years ago to try and get something done I allowed the issue to fall by the waste-side and just moved on sucking up the fact that my DSL was unreliable. My sister who lives one block away broke down and switched to Comcast, other neighbors tried other phone companies. The problem neighbors have had with switching to new phone service providers is that these companies do not maintain the lines and the issues continue. Verizon seems to be in control with no true interest in change.

The consequences of The University City phone issue can be significant. We have a large number of students and professionals who work from home and depend on DSL. Imagine telling your professor or boss that your internet went down. That??s got to be up there with ??my dog ate my home work? at this point. It is not safe to put our information at risk by being forced to Hi-jack unsecured wireless from our neighbors because of inadequate equipment during down times. Last but not least, alarms and safety systems communicate on these lines. ADT let me know on my cell when my phone lines were down on Monday night. That??s not good.

I hear great things about FiOS; dare we dream?

I don't even know where to begin talking about how frustrating my dealings have been with Verizon over the past few months. Let's start with the fact that at this moment I have been on hold with their "service" (if you can call it that) for over 40 minutes trying to get through to a real person. That awful voice mail system they have doesn't give you the options you need and when it doesn't understand you dumps you into limbo. And if you do happen to get through most of the time you have to be switched to someone else who might be able to take care of your problem. Or, as they have done to me, switched me back to the place where I started.
Then how about the fact that they offered me a DSL upgrade and told me "nothing would happen until someone had contacted me". Then they initiated it without letting me know and as a result I was off line for 10 days in a critical period when I needed to be connected to the Internet. Then let's talk about how the fact that they were supposed to change a service on the billing date. Instead they changed it immediately and cost me a $43.00 phone call to Japan.

I had a old fashioned landline telephone for many years at my home. For the past 4-5 years, I would have static on the line. Sometime so terrible that I couldn't use the phone. It was worse during bad weather. I reported it dozens of times. Sometimes it would improve for a few days but never actually solved. They checked the inside and outside wires many times. One repair tech said I probably needed a new outside cable run but the company hates to do that due to cost, etc. Anyway I got tired of using my cell phone as my primary telephone at home, so now I have Vonage (via my cable Internet) and it is wonderful. Audio is way better than the static-ridden copper line! Wish I did this years ago. My Verizon landline was $40 ish /mo. and Vonage is just $17 plus tax./mo.

I chose Verizon for telephone service and DSL internet after having a horrible experience with another company. Although they took a long time to activate the DSL service, the service is great and it was worth the wait. We installed it ourselves late one evening. We got through most of the installation OK, but we began having problems. I called customer service and they had us on the internet quickly.

The same night, I was trying to hook up a router to the modem and I was having problems. I called again and within minutes, the problem was solved. The modem that you rent from them doubles as a router!

Anytime I need help, I get it fast and friendly. The telephone service works fine too and after a month, I haven't had any problems. I highly recmmend their service.
