Who cares how they attempt to invite you to join. The fact is you get to buy EVERYTHING there are low manufacturer's prices, not just furniture. While they started as a furniture direct to consumer facilitator, they have much more than now and many items you can buy directly over the internet.
True that you have to order from a catalogue and wait for the item to be shipped, but you never pay anywhere near full price. After having been a member for almost 10 years now, I can't believe I still sometimes pay retail for some things. I have saved literally 10s of thousands of dollars on stuff. Granted it does cost a lot more to join today than when we did, but if you plan on buying lots of home remodeling items, furniture, luggage, accessories, china, jewelry, kids playsets, electronics, etc. then you should seriously considering trying to get invited. The few drawbacks: don't be alarmed by the high joining fee......you more than make it up over the years by all the stuff you buy at a fraction of high retail prices. Once you get your invitiation you have just that visit to decide to join. If you don't join on your visit, you will never be allowed to. You can't discuss the prices you get for the items with any retailers....once you see just how low the prices are (for example you get furniture at between 60-80% off the retail price)....luggage has an even bigger markup that you skip...that you'll see the massive savings and minor inconvenience is well worth the price.

PROS: You pay what the stores pay to the manufacturers. Big savings.
CONS: High joining fee, pressure to sign up on the spot, catalogue shopping

DirectBuy lures you into their showroom with a free visitor's pass and sometimes the added bonus of a restaurant gift certificate. You listen to the sales pitch and then "get to" talk to a high-pressure sales-person. They offer you the opportunity to buy home furnishings at wholesale prices. The membership cost is phenomenally high, but if you buy enough it actually is a good deal. We were able to get the high quality furniture that we wanted at a very good discount. The drawbacks are that you have to pay a percentage to DirectBuy and you have to pick-up and haul your furniture home yourself (or hire someone else). Unlike purchasing furniture in the store, though DirectBuy, you need to wait and wait for one or two months while the manufacturer ships to the DirectBuy warehouse. Looking through the manufacturer catalogs is very interesting (to see what the manufacturer's pricing is), but you won't necessarily be able to find exactly what you are looking for. Since you are just browsing catalogs, you generally have to call around to find somewhere local where you can then go to actually look at the furniture before you order it from DirectBuy. DirectBuy is an okay deal only if you are planning to buy a LOT of furnishings for your house.
