When it comes to choose a sandwich shop in the downtown Winston area, the choices are limited. Eventually, one becomes tired of Subway and yearns for something new.

In the old Cafe Carolina space at the One Fourth St building, Center City Grille seeks to fill that void. Cafe Carolina always had a good selection of sandwiches though it was the salads I usually went for. This time around I thought I would give the sandwich offerings a try at Center City. The menu is quite good in selection offering fourteen distinct sandwich preparations as well as the option to build your own. There are also five meal salads along with chili served in a cornbread bowl and soups. They also have retained the coffee bar from Cafe Carolina though the sweet shop is no longer available. Breakfast is also available.

But you go Center City Grille for the sandwiches. From the diverse selections, it was hard to choose. Started off with a safe choice in the Meatball Sub. Served on a crusty section of French sub roll, the marinara sauce was a bit bland but the meat was tender and flavorful. I did appreciate the overall sandwich as much worthy competitor to the Subway version. Later on I tried the Steak Focaccia; served on a nutty bread, slices of tender beef topped with cheddar and to proved not every sandwich requires mayonnaise or mustard, the creamy horseradish sauce was a perfect complement. Definitely a sandwich to have again. On the other hand, their Dave's Chicken Salad is a flavorless item. The chunks of white chicken meat is appreciated but it is in a bland dressing that could use some kick to it.

With each sandwich, you are given the choice of chips, potato salad or vegetable sticks. The potato salad was not a bad choice; the potatoes could have been a bit more tender but at least the potato pieces had stayed intact and not dissolved into a mashed mush.

Center City Grille is a fine addition to the downtown dining scene and one that will continue to patronize in the future.

PROS: Great Decor, Steak Focaccia is a keeper
CONS: Chicken Salad is bland, needs more diverse side items
