Thanks for all the nice comments. But we're NOT on 19th street. Our correct address is 12 West 18th Street (btw 5th and 6th Avenues) and our LP store is 77 East 1Oth Street (3rd & 4th Avenues).

Academy Records is surprisingly cheap considering it's in NYC. You can get really great deals on used and promo CDs if you are willing to push through the crowds in the narrow aisles to sort through the CDs. They generally seem to have a good variety of underground rock stuff, and if you have a bunch of different things in mind that you would be willing to buy for a few bucks if you saw them, you have a decent chance of finding something to buy.

Academy is my favorite record store. This is probably because I don't usually get excited enough about new releases to want to go out and buy them right away, and prefer to shop at used stores where I may find one of many albums I am semi-interested in owning for 6 or 8 bucks. When I take a while to go through the whole rock/pop section, I don't always end up buying something, but I sometimes end up finding a few good CDs. It's always a surprise, and that's part of the fun. Browsing can be a chore when the store is packed on weekends, so go at odd times if you can. They also have a used DVD section further back in the store that's worth checking out.

PROS: prices, great used selection
CONS: no guarantee you'll find what you want

This is the place to go when the cash comes in to get the most bang for your buck. Great prices on great records. Has lots of good soul, jazz, brazilian, reggae, as well as rock. Tons of decent $1 records if you are willing to look
