Hands down the best place to go if you wanna see a movie opening night and are willing to make a event out of it. From the D.C. suburbs I will take the Metro all the way down to Woodley Park when I want to see a movie opening night and it will be totally worth it. Nice area too, with a bunch of shops and restaurants nearby.

A classic. Best theater in the area for old-school movie experience. For big-screen favorites it is the most comfortable seating and best viewing experience. A favorite with kids and adults alike. Worth the trip even if you live in the wilds of the suburbs. Generic multiplexes don't compare.

The place to see a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen. Classic movie house including balcony. Steps away from Cleveland Park metro stop -- and thank goodness because parking is a bear up there. Also great places to dine or snack nearby. Be advised there can be huge crowds, just lined up after purchasing tickets, so best to buy ahead.

This is one of the only classic movie theaters left in DC. The Uptown has one single, huge screen, and seating that is more like a theater than a movie complex. Great seats can be had in the balcony. The whole theater has an art deco style, and it is a treat just to look around. They tend to offer movies that look good really big, like action/adventure stuff, and only show one movie for two-three week periods. You might want to order tickets ahead of time for really popular movies. Metro accessible: take the Cleveland Ave. stop or Woodley Park (both Red Line).
