The elementary school was built for 500 and there are over 900 kids there. The school board just keeps upping the numbers. The terms "excelling" school are simply a marketing slogan and have been "dumbed down". They do not use national standardized testing but use the Arizona AIMS test, which after 3 years of dumbing down, still 10% of Ariziona kids didn't get their 2006 diplomas because of this test. Arizona is around 50 in 50 in school spending... think Mississippi... so beware. Arizona is a retirement state. The "mean girl" comment... there are "mean boy" and encouragement from the school to date due to the skimpily clad girl/poor boys 8th grade party. I think the parents are settling for far too little from the Arizona education system in general. It isn't normal for boys and girls to be mean. Parents just don't want to deal with it.
Better to go to a charter or private school that does use standardized testing and parents are involved more than throwing lavish parties.

PROS: There is free transportation
CONS: Poor role models in kids and parents

Desert Caynon gets no complaints from me! This is one of the best schools in the district, or area for elementary level. The prinicipal here, Ms. Sally Norton, is top notch and truly cares about the well being of her kids. I like that the academic programs are strong, but not too forceful. Students are given chances to excel, and given opportunities for help in the areas they need. Parental involvemnt is great. This is also a great area of Scottsdale.

PROS: Phenomenal pricnipal

This school is in a very nice neighborhood (I'd even go as far to say an exclusive neighborhood because most people are very, very well to do in this area). The school is everything that you would expect for the great neighborhood that it is in. They have good students, good teachers, and lots of resources.

PROS: Good school in a nice area
CONS: none

Desert Canyon Elementary School is a great school. This is the nearest elementary school to my residence and so I enrolled my daughter in here. Even though I enrolled her quite a bit late (schooling already began), there were no problems with admission. My daugher loved her new school on the first day. It has a big playground for kids and the environment is really nice. The teachers and staff in the office are very friendly and accomodating.
