Please don't be like Santee Vons. I would like to shop where there are polite employees.

On 1/8/09 at 11am I was checking out at the Santee Vons. There were two open express lanes. I hadn't realized the second one in from the end was also an express lane. I am disabled and was trying to get checked out being my legs were getting weak. I started to unload my groceries. The checker then stopped talking to another employee long enough to ask "do you have more than
15 items?" I said "I think I might". She the smiled very big and said " you will need to reload your groceries and go to one of the other lanes". I was not assisted in reloading as she went back to talking. The only other two lanes were on the other side of the store. She had said they were no wait lanes, yet there were 4 people waiting in one and 3 in the other with the manager trying to solve a problem. So as I was sweating and my legs shaking I went across the store and WAITED for close to 20 minutes. I go shopping during this time because there are few customers. There were very few today also. The entire time I waited to check out, the BUSY talking checker continued to work very hard at talking. Only one customer used the first express lane. I'm sure the EXPRESS LANE CHECKER was very proud! She made a disabled person reload groceries and ENFORCED that 15 item LAW. Using common sense would have caused her to do her job, heaven forbid! I talked to the manager about this. She said they need to be more consistant. Yes, but consistant with some common sense.

This is the 3rd time I have had this problem at the Vons in Santee. The manager I spoke with about 10 months ago had told me the express lanes could be used by anybody if nobody was using the lanes. I had told the checker this as well. She smugly told me "no, you have to use the other lanes". I had started going to this store again being it was more convienent and I just had another surgery. It looks like I will be changing back to a different store. I refuse to go to a store that has employees that care more about a rule instead of a customer, especially if it made sense. This checker did absolutely NOTHING but talk the entire time I saw her while in the store. I have talked to other people that have dealt with this issue at this Vons store. My mother uses a different Vons. She has told me they always allow people to use the express lane if nobody else is using them. It looks as if there are a few employees at this store that feel their personal life is more important than the customers that are there to buy groceries.

Bottom line? The store is okay over all. Just don't expect an EXPRESS checker to help if you have more than 15 items even if they are doing nothing. It won't be quite as busy either, I won't be there anymore.
