5 Stars: GREAT FOOD, GREAT VIBE, GREAT FUN! (by AustinSteve)

Just went here for the first time! I guess it is just starting to get very popular. I was unsure of what to expect, but immediately after walking in I knew this would be one of my new favorite spots. We arrived around 11 with a promoter so getting in wasn't a problem. The bouncer was very nice, and politely let us in. Refreshing to find in Hollywood. I can tell you that it is better to arrive early, and I noticed that they were not letting people in after about 11:30 without bottle service/cover charge.

We sat down at our table and ordered some food, and it was A++. After eating I grabbed a drink from the bar, the bartender was extremely nice and had a smile on her face the whole night. The crowd was fun, and relaxed. After people were done with dinner, everyone got out onto the floor and started to dance the night away.

There is also a bar outside on the back patio, so it's nice if you don't feel like walking all the way back inside to get a drink. I definitely recommend this place! It has the ambience, and energy that you need for a perfect night. Reminded me of a smaller version of the club Hwood.

5 Stars: excellent (by jamiecostanzo)

My mother and i went during the day to have a quick bite to eat. the service was excellent, and the food was even better. I had the BBQ chicken sandwhich and my mom had the pan seared salmon. To make the experience even more enjoyable, our waitress was very accomodating.

5 Stars: My favorite restaurant in Los Angeles (by Cathy A.)

Great atmosphere! You could look at the walls all day and find new details every visit. Just a super cool venue and the food matches the first impression. They have huge salads and delicious macaroni and cheese. I hear they are oppressively busy at night, but it's often quiet at lunch. Definitely my first choice in Hollywood!

5 Stars: Understated but great atmosphere and service. Virgin Atlantic says it is a Top 20 Eaterie in LA!! (by ECS76)

Well. Citizen Smith is very chilled, quite understated but is a great place for a date. Pre going out cocktails at the bar works too. In the evening it is candle lit and has a lovely vibe. I heard about it when i flew Virgin Atlantic. It is listed in their Top 20 places to go to eat in LA .... and i agree! Remember to book incase you have to queue ....

3 Stars: Citizen Smith (by Erin + Jack L.)

Trendy-chic.  Cool enough, though packed with scenesters.  We were too late for the regular menu, and got stuck with macaroni and cheese.  Mojitos were 'eh'... Maybe we'll go back to try some of the 'real' food.  My boyfriend installed the sound system there...so it ROCKS! ;}

4 Stars: Great spot for lunch, a far superior alternative to the fast food franchises and pizza joints surrounding it (by LynneYoung)

A really beautiful location in what was once the rundown part of town. I had the ahi tuna salad and thought it was as good as any I had ever had, really fresh fish and not too drowned in dressing, altogether a great healthy lunch. The restaurant itself is far more glamorous than the run down buildings surrounding it would imply and being there made me think I was somewhere much more exotic than Hollywood. Reasonably priced for such good food in such an attractive setting.

5 Stars: Great food, hip atmosphere (by CSquelch)

I would like to give this place 4 1/2 stars as I like it a lot. A lot of things are great about it and rather than go on about those things I'll touch on what I'm not thrilled about. I felt the lighting was a little dim and the music a bit low. The menu seems to lack a real identity which I kind of like because it gives you a variety but there is definitely no central local or theme to it. The service is good. All in all a really good, casual eating experience that I would highly recommend.

5 Stars: Really fun experience (by Greulsd)

I was here recently for a party, and the layout of the place was awesome. There's a full back patio that opens up and you can fit quite a few people back there. Anyway, the food was really what made it worth it. It's a little expensive so I wasn't able to try all the wines they offer, and I didn't get the filet (i'm big fan of filet) but I did get the mac and cheese (As was suggested on here) and salmon. The salmon came on a plate with mashed potatoes, presented pretty nicely. I had that a blackberry mojito. If you haven't had one of those, get one. It's a flavor explosion in your mouth. Other people I was with got chicken fingers and sliders (these aren't the typical White Castle sliders) which I didn't get a chance to taste, but they seemed to enjoy it. The only other dish I had a bite of was the Summer Salad. Strawberries, Goat Cheese, Spinach and Almonds. It has kind of a sweet taste to it, and I'm not a big salad person either.

I don't know what else to say that hasn't been said about the atmosphere. It's unique and one of a kind even in Los Angeles. I'm really surprised more people don't talk about this place.

The worst part of the experience, other than the bill, (so I sound cheap? Cause I am) was that it was a little TOO dark. I had to use the candle to read my menu. I don't know if it was where I was sitting or if it's like that through out the place every night. Lots of candles in here.

All in all, if you want to go out for a nice meal, this is as good a place as any for an upscale dining experience. I will come back.

4 Stars: Love It (by BradleyWilson)

Finally went back after six months... It's the kind of place you forget how much you like it until you go back. I would have given it a five but the apps were fast and the food was a bit slow. No biggie, 20 minutes or so - the server (hot little brunette) told me their was a new chef in training, so whatever. I LOVE the citris shrimp! Maybe a bit slow but I thought the food was actually better than the last 2 times I went.

5 Stars: Great dinner date spot (by hwoodpopart)

I love this place. The food the ambiance the staff. Everything about my experience here was amazing. I was skeptical to come as I don't travel to Hollywood a lot but once i walked into this place I felt like I was in a whole different city. The cow hides on the walls, the big gaudy chandeliers and the rustic metals surrounded by brick walls. This whole place looked like something from the midwest meets NY.

The food was great as well and I highly recommend the jalepeno mac and cheese along with the tower of onion rings to start. Then move to the steak or salmon for the main course depending on how your feeling. The food came on time and there was a friendly staff to help. and the selection of wine was just what i needed to satisfy my date and I. And to top the night off don't forget the brownie desert. YUMMY!!!

Do come and check out this place and I promise you wont be disappointed.

1 Stars: never got our food... (by parlabear)

I came here with a friend a couple weeks ago. Granted, it was a friday night, and was starting to get busy, however, the server took a long time in greeting us. When we got our drinks, there was a mysterious object floating in it, the server was MIA, so we had to go up to the bar and ask for another one. we ordered an appetizer and our main dishes, the appetizer came out, but the dinner never showed. we asked the server what was going on, and he said that it would be out in 10 min. 15 min later, we asked what was happening, and he stated that the orders got "lost" and he was sorry, but the kitchen was working on it. we decided to leave b/c we weren't hungry anymore. the manager came, said he was sorry and just left, without offering any other consolation. i will not set foot in that place ever again. i will say that it is a great "date" atmosphere.

The food is good...EXCEPT this gross gritz/rice pudding/baby food this that comes on the salmon plate. It's grossssssss. But other then the gross gritz/rice pudding/baby food, everything else is good to eat. I would have to say that the food is just ok, but it's a great date spot. The music made me and my friend very sleepy~ soothing,..I guess good music for those on a date...i dunno but the music was like...101 lullaby's or something.

4 Stars: Great food, good service, beautiful decor (by bluebug83)

I have visited this place a few times in the past and sat at the bar with girlfriends. We usually ordered apps, but I had never eaten dinner here until recently. I made a reservation (since the reviews said I ought to) and when I got there we were told our table would be ready in ten more minutes. We were fine with the wait but even so the manager, bought us a drink as apology, which was appreciated. Our server's name was Melaina and although she appeared to be busy she made it to our table just enough and not too much, if that makes sense...the group of girls I was with are EXTREMELY picky, but Melaina seemed non-plussed by the demands. I ordered the BBQ shrimp, since it is my favorite app. It was great, as usual, but I must add that the name does not warn you how spicy it is. For dinner I ordered filet mignon and substituted the smashed peas with esparagus. I am a steak girl, to be honest, so I tend to order the same thing where ever I go. You would be amazed how easy it is to screw up steak. I was pleasantly surprised because I had read reviews that the steak was average at best, it was perfectly cooked. Medium rare to perfection! I only asked my friends to my right and left ,because I really was with a big group of girls, how their food was. My friend to my right loved her chicken and waffles, which I thought was a funny combination. My friend to my left ordered the summer salad (it might be called spring..can't remember) and she loved this salad a great deal. For desert we ordered one of everything, since it was someone's birthday. I only tried the chocolate cake and the sorbet. The sorbet was sorbet...can't really screw with that. The cake was really good and I am not a chocolate fan. It was not heavy at all... I was told it is flourless. Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for dinner or for a fun place to hang out with friends for drinks! Last but not least, the decor is really lavish!!! Exposed brick, mirrors, candles..gorgeous!!!

2 Stars: What a disaster... What is all the fuss about? (by mdaoudi)

so i picked this restaurant for a business diner... we had to wait 15 - 20 minutes to get a waiter.
My business partner orders fish... and he gets a filet mignon (i have to say they offered desert on the house for the wait).

if this is what you get on week day, i cannot imagine what it's like Friday/Saturday.

5 Stars: Great place (by Trey N.)

This place is first class. Awesome atmosphere with really high ceilings, dark colors, candles, kinda goth I guess...

The bar is huge and the bartenders are fast. They have a restaurant in the back that is supposedly really nice, I just went for drinks.

Pretty hip crowd and very cool bouncers....not those guys that give you a hard time. It's a great place to go without having to deal with all the LA lines/crowds that can ruin your night.

I highly recommend.

5 Stars: The best hang in Los Angeles (by foodie1971)

The BEST food, atmosphere, music and ambience EVER!!! Very friendly staff, melt in your mouth filet, awesome Citrus Shrimop, and the best Mac'n'cheeze I have ever eaten (I add bacon, it is to DIE for!!)!! Great DJ's, playing rock'n'roll music, but quiet enough that you can actually have a conversation... I have celebrated my birthday at Citizen Smith for the last 2 years...
3 Stars: Great Space and Interesting Cocktails; Service Needs Improving (by martinikitty13)

Citizen Smith is a rather trendy restaurant with a classy, gothic vibe. The interior is filled with dark woods, wrought iron details, leather booths accented with pony-hair wall coverings, chandeliers, mirrors- it's quite a visual extravaganza, yet somehow seems to work all together. The two main focal points appear to be the impressive and well-stocked bar and the glass back wall which opens into a lovely patio. I had been here when it first opened, and liked the general vibe but was a bit turned off by the crazy trendy crowds and the "too cool for school" attitude conveyed by the servers. They specialized in comfort food, and that hasn't changed. It's been a few years and I decided to give it another try for lunch. We were immediately greeted when we entered - it had just opened for lunch so there were no other patrons. They seem to be reorganizing their menu/wine list/staff so there were some hiccups in service (but no attitude). The sommelier was lovely and I settled on his recommendation (Conumdrum), a pleasant white table wine with a lovely floral bouquet. Our group had the following: house salad - simple, fresh, mesculun greens with plump sweet tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette; fried chicken skewers - 4 large chicken tenders - very juicy, but a bit large - good for sharing; jalapeno mac & cheese - good; nice baked bread crumb topping. perhaps i like things too spicy, but i wished it were a little spicier; chinese chicken salad - my friend liked it; chopped cobb salad - again my friend liked it, but i wasn't that tempted. Overall we enjoyed it and would definitely come back to try for dinner. They have very interesting cocktails on the menu so i'm sure it'll be a fun experiment. Service does need to get more polished (not sure why, but our server seemed really nervous ... maybe he was new on the job...)

4 Stars: best place in hollywood, period. (by sdafdsfaf)

I agree with the reviewer below, the place gets a tottally undeserved bad rap. WTF? It is without a doubt, the most gorgeous space PERIOD in the entire hollywood area, the staff is sultry and polite, the food is great and they throw a great party. Thank god the management understands how to create a good vibe, because it would be easy to ruin it with top 40 nonsense. there is no where else i know of in LA that is like it. You can chill in a uber romantic atmosphere, listen to timeless music, eat and drink yourself silly, and all without the pretense of the other unjustifiably snooty, characterless shitholes in the area. They have gone through some ups and downs since opening i hear, but the basic package is unbeatable and seems to be getting better every time i go there.

5 Stars: Best Burgers and music that's always perfect (by MiamiChica)

I don't know why this place gets bad reviews! I haven't tried the whole menu but their burgers and steak are alone worth the visit! Then there's the music. It's always perfect! Chill on Sunday nights, rocking on Thurs-Sat night -- perfect.

This is my favorite spot in Hollywood for a Burger and great ambiance. I also love chilling there Sunday nights when there's few people, the music is mellow and the atmosphere is very cozy. The staff is generally pretty good. I've taken all my friends there, even celebrated my birthday there and have never heard a complaint from anyone I've gone with.

Get a reservation, a group and cozy up in one of their great booths. It's probably not the place for a nice quiet romantic evening but for rocking it with your significant other or friends, I think it can't be beat in Hollywood.

4 Stars: Great food, Best on the weekends... (by me4you)

I was at Citizen for a closed event and liked the space and the tray service so I opted to take some friends there for dinner and drinks. Although the music was a bit loud at times, I found the dim lighting to be mood setting and the food was as good as I remember. I had a great female server that was really sweet and attentive and had no problems with the bar. Really, aside from the fact that the booth we sat in was hard to get in and out of, we had a great time and although I have read mixed reviews on the place I have to say that I really enjoyed myself and would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends. I would, however, deter older guests from going too late unless you request being seated on the patio, which was well heated and charming. One of my friends is a smoker and we loved all the candles and the fact that we were in a tent. VERY ROMANTIC and the music is not really heard as much here. Also, really recommend the shrimp. It was glazed in a sweet sauce and I think it was an appetizer, but I ordered as a meal with a salad! Really great! Will visit again soon!

1 Stars: A total disappointment... (by veeveeun)

Ever since this place opened, I've been reading glowing reviews about it. I finally decided to try it out this past weekend and it was DISAPPOINTING. We were seated in a corner by the kitchen when there was room all around the main dining area, our server took a good 20 minutes before coming to greet us, the ENTIRE staff (I'm talking hostess, servers, DJ, bartender, and MANAGERS) were gathered near our table talking about some personal drama. I ordered the Mahi Mahi (and was not asked how I would like it cooked), needless to say, it came out dry and the spinach and fingerling potatoes came out on the bitter side. I should also mention that their steak was not anything to cheer about either. I can't say too much about the decor as the restaurant was so dark, it was hard enough to see the food in front of me! We really couldn't get out of the place fast enough. Again... totally disappointed...

3 Stars: Good food for the most part, but busy (by marpop)

Been here a few times and it's usually pretty busy. Yes, the mac-and-cheese is good (you can get it w/ or w/o jalapeno) and the entrees are what i call upscale comfort classics. The loungey music is courtesy of the iBook DJ near the bar and you can usually spot a few cougars in the crowd. The lighting is VERY dim, but you can tell the decor is really cool -- vaulted ceilings, cool wall treatments and lots of mirrors and chandeliers. Worth checking out at least once.

1 Stars: No service, No return (by lpress6421)

We went last Sat. night before going to the theater, we had 6:00 pm reservations. We arrived at 6:05 and the hostess was chatting with a lady, and after a few minutes, sat her at a table. She then disapeared for a full 5 minutes leaving me standing there. The place was virtually empty with only one booth and several bar seats occupied.

She proceeded to seat us at a banquette which was litterally 2" away from the next table! We asked if we could sit in a booth, but she said they were all reserved!!! It was very windy so the patio was out, so she asked if we wanted to sit in the lounge, and we said okay. It was a 2 top by the door to the patio, and several people were having a good old time at the bar and the football game on the TV. Even with this noise and wind coming in from outside, we decided to stick it out.

Well, after about 8 more minutes, now almost 6:20pm, the waitress kinda ran by and said she' be with us in a minute. NOT!!! After a few more minutes a guy came by and asked if everything was allright, we said no, no service! He said he'd take care of it, and left. At that time the rock music came on, nice and loud on top of all the other noise!! Well a few minutes passed and still no server.

That was it, we left at 6 :30 tired of sitting in the wind, with all the noise, and no service. We'll never go back!

5 Stars: great place for romantic dinner... (by jackyk143)

My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary and we chose to start the evening with dinner at Citizen Smith based on a review a friend had given us. We did not make a reservation and were able to walk right in, which was nice. Also, when asked if we had been there before we told the hostess we had not and that we were there for our anniversary. Perhaps, because we told her why we were there or perhaps because we just had good timing, we were given a booth in a quiet corner. The ambience was very romantic with lots of candles and dark furniture. Actually, when my husband and I walked in we were incredibly impressed by the decor! It really is very beautiful.
Our watiress was kind and attentive but not too much and the food was fantastic! I personally ordered the fish and my husband the steak and both were incredible! We had desert and the chef brought it out to us to congratulate us! Really surprising and pleasant! We ended up staying and ordering a bottle of wine and there was a large range of selection! If you are on a budget you don't need to worry, they really do cater to everyone! We really did have a fantastic time and have encouraged friends to visit! My birthday is coming up and I am planning my birthday party at Citizen! I look forward to visiting again!

5 Stars: Very sultry, great food, couldn't ask for a better evening!!!! (by andygirl143)

Went to Citizen Smith for dinner with my girls last Saturday night. First of all, the inside of the restaurant was sultry! I would use another 's' word, but this site won't let me! The food was perfect and the waiter was HOT! Which is always a plus! We had such a brilliant time that we ended up heading to the bar after dinner to hang out. A DJ, don't know his name, was rocking out and the bartender, also very hot, recommended a martini I had never had called a lychee martini, I think that's how its spelled, it was perfect! Everyone there, patron wise, was cool. Did not feel pretentious at all. Ended up staying almost the whole night singing and laughing. The door guy....I think his name was Austin, was so nice. He remembered our names and invited us back! Very rad. I highly recommend this place for dinner and for atmosphere. The place is a little dark, using primarily candle light for lighting, but it only added to the mood and atmosphere and the music was rockin'! Had a great time and will definitely frequent Citizen!

3 Stars: Fun atmosphere, don't go for the food, music waaay too loud (by yellowbear)

We went to Citizen Smith for a friend's birthday. We were seated on the outside patio, but in the corner next to either the dumpster or storage section. It smelled very bad - like bleach, but the staff brought out some incense to cover the smell.
Food: I got the panko crusted tuna w/ mashed potatoes. I liked it a lot as the sauce was very tasty. I also tasted the ham pizza (pretty good, thin crust). The cobb salad w/ steak had specks of steak on the top. The major drawback was that the patio was SO dark, that I couldn't see anything. My friend took out her cell phone so she could read the menu. They had 3 candle things illuminating the whole area. The other problem was that the music was so loud. We were basically yelling at each other across the table which just got very tiresome.
Service: no complaints

After several failed attempts to B&T it, and my open table account under probation.... for cancellations.. this is how it went... I changed my reservation twice during prime time on a saturday night, they were very accomodating and did so with out hoop lah, the door man was charming and funny, the hostess was quick on her feet and with her smile we were seating right away and our server was there when we needed him.... changed my drink because a rob roy in their system is really a roy rogers..., the rice and peas (risotto), and jalepeno mac and cheese, both were delicious as was my friend's mahi mahi, a rec from the server.... the drink was pretty stiff...., great decor, industrial/vintage feel high ceilings... cow hide wall paper once you see it you'll understand..... not crowded at all... two entrees two appettizers, two drinks, all under a 100 bucks on cahuenga in LA/Hollywood..... not too shabby....Like it, I may see it once a month.... Gotta to go at least once....

5 Stars: Had a great experience! Highly recommend, especially for a night out on the town! (by jessizzle)

I made a reservation for a Saturday night for my 6 girlfriends and I and the minute we walked into the restaurant we were impressed with the decor. Very lush. We were seated in a booth that put us right in the mix of the restaurant, yet we could still hear eachother and did not feel drowned out by the crowd or music. I hear the restaurant is under new ownership and it shows. Very attentive service, great food and the GM came by our table several times to tell us about the new menu and drinks! We ended up spending two hours just eating our way through the menu. After dinner the place had picked up so much that we paid our tab and went over to the bar instead of going elsewhere as we had planned! Overall, highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a fun night out.

4 Stars: Great scene good for large parties (by sarahlane15)

For my boyfriend's birthday we decided to dine @ Citizen Smith. Our group consisted of 8 of us. The server was kind and attentive. Patient to explain our queries about the menu ( as a server should but he was just nice) One of our friends brought 2 bottles of a Syrah blend and a fabulous Pinot Noir. Normally the corkage fee is $25....the sweetie pie server waived the fee because we explained we were all servers now or at another time and would hook him up. He DID and WE did. I believe everyone enjoyed their meals.... cocktails were good, appetizers as well. Mac and cheese was definitely cheesy (in a good way) We sat outside and they had heat lamps made available as it was a chilly night in april. Overall great experience and I would suggest for a date night if not a large group which they accommodated for us. Make a reservation though.

1 Stars: Citizen Smith or is it? (by alexalva)

The first time my girlfriend and I went the service was nice and we thought it was fine so we figued we would return with some friends. Things were different and strange. We are not quibblers about price but the wine list was minimal and expensive. The food was also minimal and expensive. Bread usually a free treat was not and we later found out the bottled water was ten bucks a pop...needless to say I got even by keeping the bottle. The waitess was nice and was trying-she worked to get the broken speakers to not sound like the boom box junk they were-funny how in a town that is about sight and sound music is usually just LOUD.

The funny thing was the manager made it point to come out and meet us and ask how things were, we did not note him do this with anyone else but he was nice and he even addressed the B rating on the door. While every review here is bad it just seemed weird that they SEEMED to be trying but maybe didn't have a clue or maybe they don't want to be seen as a eatery rather just a hot bar, really I don't know.

Seems to me if the food aspect is not what they want they are risking alot by allowing themselves to be seen as such a icky place to go-word of mouth is everything and hey just read the reviews here.

Bottomline would I advise anyone to go there? Sadly no If the manager would have given me his card when he spoke with us I would have contacted and addressed all this to him...perhaps he should do some damage control and say something here

5 Stars: neighborhood surprise (by koalalvr)

I work in the neighborhood and had never even realized Citizen Smith was practically next door--it's all curtained, no signs (guess that's Hollywood for ya), never saw anyone go in or out during the day. Anyway, my friend from work suggested we try it out one evening and--to my surprise--not what I expected at all! I'd heard of a crazy club vibe, hollywood types sliming up every corner (and, to be fair, there was one table that looked a little "Entourage-y"), rude service staff, etc. What I found, in fact, was a *Restaurant*. Neat! We got real entrees (my blackened catfish special was divine), a nice Malbec for the table, and a bright unpretentious server who managed to make it happen without passing out headshots (I know...weird). There were some model-esque bartenders doing their thing, of course. Can't believe a place like this is tucked away right under my nose. All in all I had a pretty good time. My only wish is that the DJ would calm down a little--he was all over the place.

3 Stars: OSL. --Off the list--had its day and now its over (by ny2lafoodie)

I use to go to Citizen Smith when it was popular and liked that it was buzzy and found fun in the mac and cheese. Seemed to be a thing at the time--all this fun comfort food.

Well Citizen Smith has changed. I went there with my boyfriend on Thursday night. You would expect it to be busy but it was really dead. I can't belive we actually called to tell them we were running late. My boyfriend ordered the cobb salad with steak which he always enjoyed. Well now the steak was like little minced bits on top of a salad. I would practically call it unacceptable.

We told the waiter that the cobb salad with steak looked different and he asked how long it had been since we dined there. Apparently they have switched chefs.

I had the hamburger and it was really big and pretty good. For a $16 hamburger--they do it justice

I forgot how pricey the menu is--the mains being $22-$48.

My boyfriend was really bummed about his $18 salad totally being bad but really it was the "new atmosphere that really was the stinker

There are lots of places in this price range and it can be really pricey if you order the main entrees. So I think with all the choices of places to eat--the foods not that good to come back to and the place has lost it pizazz

Only good thing is they mysteriously lowered the valet price to $10. I remember it use to be $13

Citizen Smith is out. There are better places to move on to for the price

4 Stars: Outstanding Steaks (by hollywoodmolly)

Born and raised in the Midwest I know a great steak when I taste one, and the filet mignon I had at Citizen Smith was thick, juicy, flavorful, and without doubt, a supurb cut of prime (properly aged) beef. Prepared exactly the way I ordered, along with the chef's marvelous wine reduction, it was a dinner I talked about for weeks. Our server helped me pair it with a wonderful cabernet and I was set. Our rather large party was seated outdoors in a booth configuration that allowed conversation to flow easily throughout the evening. Service was attentive throughout our stay; appetizers, cocktails and the main courses arrived with little wait as the restaurant was filled to capacity that evening. If visiting the LA area again, I'd definitely stop in again.

For such a controversial place I absolutely adored this restaurant!!!!! What a beautiful interior, attractive , friendly and courteous staff, and the food was incredible. No flavor?? You guys must be joking. My husband and I brought 2 very close friends from back east, we all loved the BBQ shrimp , the cedar plank salmon was cooked to perfectionj. My husband had the filet and remarked it was one of the best he'd had in LA. There was a pork chop special stuffed with smoked cheese and herbs that my best friend insisted we all try......fabulous. I'm so glad that we didn't pay any attention to some of these reviews (they seem almost vindictive) Do yourselves a favor and go to Citizen Smith you'll be glad you did.

5 Stars: Best food around (by baxstop13)

My friends were visiting here from Chicago and I'm from Arizona. We went to LA for a few days and wanted to eat at a great place. Citizen Smith was recommended to us. What a great place!!! The food was excellent and the atmosphere was so beautiful. I had the filet mignon and it was so good...it melted in my mouth. My friends all loved their meals. I can't wait to go back.
I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant. Even if it's for appetizers and drinks...you will enjoy every thing about Citizen Smith. The service was very friendly and helpful.

5 Stars: YUMMY FOOD!!! (by jhamin)

My finace and I ate at Citizen Smith for the first time Sat night and had the MOST TASTY dinner that I can remember in years!!! I had the lobster linguine; smothered in a flavorful fresh buttery sauce. It was heaven in my mouth. I was sad I couldn't finish the whole thing and lobster doesn't go home in a doggy bag well. So my boyfriend finished it for me, after licking his plate from his steak he had. Both of us were so funny, practically making love to our food at the table. People must have thought we were nuts but I don't think anyone noticed, it was so dark in there. Which made it that much cooler! A candlelit dinner was just what the doctor ordered. Citizen Smith was recommended by a friend and we are so glad we've found this gem. I highly recommend it to everyone!

3 Stars: Very cool interior, food is bland (by dd_oc)

I love the interior and think this is a great place to have drinks, but not so much to eat. I have eaten here a bunch because it is close to where I live. I have to say the only good things I have had were the sliders and the jalapeno mac n' cheese. All of the entrees were flavorless. I think I have had a better steak at Outback Steakhouse. It is suprising, actually. Please add some more variety to your menu and make the entrees you do have more flavorful! I really like going here and want to come back!!!

1 Stars: Let me save you (by stackemhigh)

I should have read the reviews first. What a joke. The interior is super cool but the food was the worst. Flavorless ahi that was cold ( not sushi) potatoes that were watery and service that was slow and poor she barley came over to check on us. We should have walked out right when we came in and had to beg to be moved from being seated right next to the door and when we asked for a booth, the response was "they are for larger parties than four". While we were there two booths were empty, one had two people in it and the other had four. It was no surprise that when we left, the place was half empty on a Saturday night. If you want to cruise the Cahuenga scene - go for Popeye's first and then slink into the Burgundy Room, You won't be sorry - save the 350.00 for a spa treatment the next day.

5 Stars: My favorite place in LA (by aurora1)

Out of the many places in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area to go out for dinner and cocktails, Citizen Smith has become my top restaurant of choice. This is my first review on citysearch. I starting using this service a while ago and am just now getting around to sharing my experiences of my favorite places in LA and wanted to start with Citizen Smith because it's my absolute favorite. I've had my last two birthday parties there and go at least once a month, which is a lot of me. The atmosphere has a romance of class and charm adorned with candles and gothic chandeliers and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Best of all and most important, the food is always excellent. Overall Citizen Smith has set a new standard in dining for me. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an upbeat night out whether its shared with friends and family, clients, or a destination to wine and dine your significant other. It's layout can set a mood for any variety of motivation I might have for going out. My favorite is a comfy booth on the smoking patio. Thank you Citizen Smith for offering such a happy destination for me.

3 Stars: I canceled my reservation...thank you (by jmlaw10)

I had a reservation for 6 people this week and I decided to cancel based on the latest reviews on citysearch. In this day in age where there is so much competition in eateries you would think that the owners would step it up and make changes , especially if there is poor mangement and staff issues.
I was dining with partners from overseas and I want to make sure that they have an enjoyable experience. Sounds to me like I have made the right decision to cancel.

Thank you for your input we will be dining elsewhere and I will be sure to tell my associates about these comments on this site.

3 Stars: NOT ANYTING GREAT TO SAY ABOUT THIS PLACE CITIZEN SMITH (by amanda999)

The staff was not great. The food was average to below average.
I thought that I would try this place out because it looks fun from the outside, honestly that is all it has is decor. The decor is brilliant but the food, staff and management is HORRIBLE!!!

I have to agree with the other reviewer about the management, specifically Mitch.
If you are in the service/ hospitality industry the first and foremost responsibilty is
the client and customers needs. Mitch seemed to be friendly at first but he was very rude to
his staff and it made my friends and I uncomfortable. He never greeted our table once, so for a GM , I would give him a ZERO on personalty and appearance.

I will never go back. I would much rather go to Mc Donalds then ever go back to citizen smith ever again.

1 Stars: Awful Service by General Manager - MITCH - Don't go here (by smuizzy)

I made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and specifically requested a booth inside. When we got there (admittedly a little late) they took us to the outdoor patio and tried to seat is in the far corner basically next to the street. It was a cold night, and hardly any heat lamps...not to mention the patio is not attractive in any way. It's a gated in area in between two buildings and has no ambiance whatsoever. Just a space to squeeze in more business.

We spoke to the manager, MITCH, and he would not accommodate us in any way. He even went as far as to say we are even lucky to get a table since we were late. There were 2 empty booths inside and he refused to seat us there b/c they were expecting other guests.

He gave us a different table, but still out on the cold patio. There was 1 heat lamp for a table of 7 girls, and the lamp kept turning off every couple of minutes which made for a very unpleasant experience.

The manager MITCH never came out to see if everything was ok. He knew we were all very unhappy with the situation but he could care less. He should not be the general manager of a restaurant with this attitude. He didn't do or say anything to try and make up for our inconvenience. And at 9pm on Saturday night we really had no choice but to stay unless we wanted fast food.

The food was just average, with little for the health conscious. There are plenty of other restaurants with great food so don't waste your time here.

1 Stars: No Class (by lp12345)

Even though my reservation was confirmed for a booth over the phone earlier, once we arrived and were seated and settled in, the hostess came and said we had been seated in the wrong spot. We told her we were quite settled in already, but felt obligated to move when she said the seat was meant for someone with a diability. Of course we wouldn't argue with this, we were moved into the noisy lounge area seating next to a giant, loud, wooden sliding door. Now, with horrible new seating arrangements we spent the next 15 minutes without a server. When I went out to meet a friend, I saw two girls just casually drinking drinks in our former booth. On our way out there was a party where no one in a wheelchair, like stated to us. Clearly they wanted to move us to accomadate someone else. Poor service and inconsiderate hosts ensure that no one in my party or business will be visiting again.

5 Stars: Don't believe the Naysayers! (by sreed5540)

I have been reading all the crazy reviews on this place since they opened and finally decided to check it out for myself. To my surprise, everything was almost perfect. From the ambience to the food, this is one restaurant that will not disapoint even the most picky restaurant-goer.

I went there on a blind date last Thrusday night. When we got there, we were promptly seated (I had a reservation- highly recommended because this place gets packed). We sat in a gorgeous booth with beautiful cow-hide trim and cool lighting. It took a few minutes for our waitress to greet us but once she did it was on! The entire staff there is quite pleasant and easy on the eyes (as all Hollywood places are). We ordered 2 mixed green salads and the Citrus Glazed Shrimp as appetizers. Both came out within 15 minutes and were very tasty. For our dinner, we ate the Lemon Pepper Chicken and Salmon. Both were presented well and were flavorful. For desert, we shared the gargantuan Strawberry Shortcake that was unreal.

I am not sure why there are so many bad reviews on this place. Maybe it's jealousy from neighboring restaurants, but come one people this place is one of a kind with killer ambience. I have seen nothing like this in LA since I moved here 7 years ago. The place certainly beats going to one of the more "trendy" eateries aorund this city. Very cool vibe and great food- what more do you want people??

5 Stars: Best Ambience and Mac N Cheese! (by smacked71)

I went to Citizen Smith last night with a group of friends. This was my third time there. I was last there 6 months ago and was not that impressed. The service and food stunk, however this time was incredible- boy what a difference! We got there around 9:45 and the place was packed. We waited about 15 minutes for table and had a round of martini's at the bar. The bartenders and the hostess were very hospitiable and nice. We were led to our table around 10:00 and on the way we bumped into none other than MB20 singer- Rob Thomas and his wife Marisol- very cool! We were seated on the outdoor patio and the vibe was killer. Our waiter was very nice and on top of his game. He immediately told us the specials and got us a round of drinks.

We ordered a wide variety of appetizers (they seem to have listened to everybody's complaints and doubled their menu size) including the mac n cheese, quesedilia, BBQ shrimp (delicious) and some bacon-wrapped shrimp dish that made our mouths water. For our entree's I ordered the Filet Mignon and my wife ordered their special -scallops- both were presented beautifully and tasted amazing. Two of our friends ordered the Ahi Tuna and one ordered the Salmon. They concur with us that something has happened at good old Smith and the food is absolutely to die for. I am not sure if there is new management or a new chef but the place is unbelievable now. I agree with all the reviews written in the past about the place. It was always noting more than a hyped-up Hollywood hypster hangout with 8,000 candles, but it actually now is a great restaurant with amazing people working there.

I would highly recommend this place to people. Even if you ate there before and did not have a great experience, the place recently did a 180 and everything is top notch. You won't be disapointed-trust me!

4 Stars: I really enjoyed the dinner, dessert and service. (by nycgrlnewtola)

We stopped in on a Friday night without reservations and got sat about ten minutes later after grabbing a drink at the bar. The hostess was really friendly and quite beautiful, as is required for all hostesses in LA, right? We sat outside on the patio. Maybe I am biased because my friend and I are in the service industry, but it was obvious that the place was bumpin' and if our waiter took a couple extra seconds to come over, it was hardly noticed. I ordered the fried green tomatoes appetizer and my friend got the quesadilla. Both were excellent and very flavorful. For an entree I ordered the Flame Broiled Salmon - my friend got the shortribs. We ate every single delicious bite of both, even though we were pretty full from the appetizers - the portions are very generous. For dessert we got the truffle chocolate cake with creme fraiche and vanilla bean marshmallows...it was incredibly decadent and absolutely delicious. Service was quick, friendly and we didn't feel rushed. When I paid a compliment to the manager about our server, he was very gracious. And the bathroom attendants were nice. When you go out to eat with such good company you're bound to have a good time, but our experience at Citizen Smith was nothing short of fantastic. Thanks for the great meal.

1 Stars: Valets Are Criminals! Park Elsewhere! (by shakespeare_1976)

Visited our aunt in L.A. and drove straight to Citizen Smith for a nightcap after an evening of flying from Reno-Tahoe. After getting back to her house, woke up the next morning and behold - noticed our luggage had been gone through and a Sony Playstation Portable inside a zipped bag, inside of a zipped suitcase was missing. After no calls back from the Valet service and one "courtesy" call from Citizen Smith, we ended up having to file a police report at the Hollywood station. Come to find out this isn't the first report they've received from the location. Valet parkers beware!

5 Stars: Live Jazz & Sassy bartenders...Cmon it's pretty cool. (by littlebgirl)

Went there on a Tuesday evening with some friends and saw the handsome Miles Mosely perform with his band. At first it was a little dark, but once we adjusted it was okay. The decor is beautiful, they have two bars, and our bartender Brad was amazing--remembered our names, our drinks and everyone else's while dancing up a storm to the live music. We had a great time and even ventured to try some of the tuna tartar & pizza...and mojitos. it was a little weird to eat in the middle of the jazz crowd but the vibe was really chill. Overall, I'd say I highly recommend for a night out.

1 Stars: Citizen Yuck is more like it! (by simplyfed)

Run from this place as fast as you can. First and foremost I'm FINALLY getting over my - what doctors called - food posioning from this place. I had heard about Citizen Smith from a few friends who had been and had OK (at best) experiences. They told me it was overpriced, food was bland and the drinks beyond overpriced. I'm one to try things myself - mistakenly. I went there with three friends, was totally hassled by this moronic, overweight black bouncer at the door. He questioned why we were there (umm, gee i duno sir - why would we be entering a restaurant!). We were seated after a little wait (even with reservations!) and then escprted to a too small table. Even having a name here doesn't help as my somewhat high profile friend's assistant was the one who made the reservation. After a round of drinks I was ready to take out a loan - overpriced and overwatered. Hey bartender - how about learning to mix properly if you are going to plan to pay off your condo with our bill! The food was - as suspected - bland bland bland. I'll spare you the rest of the night's experience as it was dull thanks to the attitude of the staff. Our mornic bouncer made an appearance again seemlingly causing some issues at the door - good to see it wasn't just us. Bottom line is that with in hours of returning to home I started to "expell" (and other fun stuff). Wound up going to the doctor on Wednesday AM - proclaiming it was food posioning. Rock on! LA CITIZENS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - AVOID THIS PLACE!

4 Stars: Great for drinks (by rgh219)

I have been there for dinner on "off" nights (like random Mondays when not crowded) and just drinks on "on" nights like the weekend- & all of my experiences have been great. The hostess did take a long time to seat us, but after reading the reviews, I don't take it personally. We were given a complimentary appetizer, & our waiter was great (& adorable) & more then made up for the hostess. I liked the food & ate all of it, but I am not a food snob. For drinking nights, it is crowded & fun & you can usually always just walk in. Drinks are priced for LA, & there is a good vibe. The atmosphere is a little more lax & comfortable than lounges or clubs in Hollywood, but still cool- & that's why I like this place.

3 Stars: Citizen Smith, way OVER RATED... (by ssbmaverick)

Came here based upon a recommendation of a co-worker. Reservations were very easy to make, once there, the atmosphere and sceneary was great but too bad thats where the greatness stops.

We were sat at a two top that was super small. Our server must have been on his second day on the job. Couldn't remember the "daily specials". He had to bust out his pen light and look at his notes. The food was pricey but expected for "Hollywood" and a "nicer" restaurant. However what made it expensive and dissapointing was that the food was so mediocre and bland. The OVERSIZED salt and peper shakers on our tiny tables did not help either.

I had to drink my beer out of a cup made for drinking lemonade and the unprofessional staff made it very unplesant. Our server went MIA for a while and we had 4 different people not counting the water boy.

2 Stars: Do NOT waste your time and money (by huadi)

the decor was beautiful ... but the service was average and the food was NOT good and a disappointment ... and the music was awful ... for a savvy place that it is, it needed to have some cool down tempo tunes, instead of the bad 80's music that belongs at a dive bar ... and the crowd was not impressive ... they were people trying to beautiful, but really weren't ... also sat next to the cool automatic door to the back outdoor area ... which sounded like we were on a roller coaster every time it opened, not so cool and ruined the dining experience ... there are so many better places in LA to dine with good service, excellent food, great tunes, and beautiful people who don't have to work so hard!

5 Stars: Don't believe everything you read. (by rififi)

After reading all the scathing reviews posted on this website, I was more than hesitant to go there for dinner. Thankfully, I stuck to my guns and gave it a try anyway. I was able to make reservations a few hours before I wanted to go there. The hostess and waitstaff were above courteous all night, even changing our table at our request. We didn't have to wait more than 30 seconds to be brought to our table when we arrived. The wine list wasn't as plentiful as I'd hoped, but when they were out of our selected wine, they let us try a glass for free of a recommended wine to see if we liked it before we bought the bottle. The NY strip steak was cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were to die for. Fried chicken was pretty good, not the best I've had but not bad either. Creme Brulee was phenomenal. Service was very attentive, yet they knew when to leave us alone if we were talking, etc. We didn't feel rushed out of there at all. Music is awesome. Great atmostphere. A little dark inside so reading the wine list and menus was sometimes a struggle. We had two full meals with sides, a bottle of wine, 2 desserts and coffees and the bill was more than reasonable. I didn't find it overpriced at all. This place is definitely worth a try.

4 Stars: SECOND CLASS CITIZEN (by private_chef)

The hostess kindly moved us..after being swallowed up by the couch were she initially sat us at. We were seated at another table better suited for dining. But what we dined on is the main reason for this post. The food at Citizen Smith is by far the worst I have had in a long time. I left most of the Jalapeno Mac and Cheese on my plate. The cheese used to make it tasted of poor quality like an American type processed with oils and had a bland bitterness to it. I think they used a pepper jack cheese and then added sliced raw jalapeno to it. NOT the decadent dish oozing with cheese and spice that I was hoping for. My pork chop was listed on the menu as 10 ounces. It was closer to 6 but that was ok because I did not finish that either.. It was paired with apple and was just plain boring, like anyone could have made it not an "uber chef". The worst part of the food experience came when my dining partner arrived at the same conclusions about her Mac and Cheese. I felt strangely relieved when she commented how bad it was, and was glad that it wasn't just me being a food snob. I did feel bad for suggesting the place and believing the hype. She made the comment first saying the Mac and Cheese was dry and not worth the carbs. Then she asked me to try her Salmon with Lemon and Capers. She had a concerned look on her face. I took a taste and instinct told my brain to quickly remove it from my mouth. Yes, I refused to swallow. It was very mushy not fresh or flaky; it tasted overly fishy and decayed. I have never taken the time to write any comments or reviews of any kind but this dining experience has prompted me to warn others to avoid this bad food. Don't become a Second Class Citizen.

4 Stars: good looking decor, good looking people (by akira101)

i went here last saturday night after watching a movie @ the arclight. as we approached the door, the person at the front asked what we were doing here. i told him we were here for drinks. i'm assuming if we asked for dinner it would have been a different situation.

anyways, the decor here is really really nice. very industrial w/ a lot of candles. my gfriend and i went to the back for drinks instead of the bar in the front (so crowded). towards the back, there was a sliding door for those eating outside. very interesting! at anyrate, the drinks were a little pricey and we didn't have dinner/appetizers. But still, good looking place, very good looking people, and definitely great music.

If you can get over the fact that the "hostess" does not make you feel welcomed, has a big attitude and is rude then this place is great. The ribeye was delicious and you have to try the jalapeno mac n cheese. Great beer selection, friendly staff. This place rocks..the vibe is lively and they play fabulous music.

4 Stars: Decent steak if you can survive "the scene" (by guile)

Another Hollywood prime steakhouse (sigh). I arrived at 10pm on a Sunday night only to encounter a bouncer who insisted on knowing who I was there to see (How about the chef, you a-hole?). I mentioned dinner and was let in to the mostly empty dining room. Decor is very nice as is the ambience. I can only imagine "attempting" to get in on a Fri/Sat night. The staff was friendly and didn't sport a 'tude. My ribeye steak was very good, juicy, well-seasoned and a large cut at 20oz. The wine list here is a joke but I don't think that would affect the average customer of this place who is more into looking good than looking at what's on the menu. A great place for drinks and socializing.

2 Stars: TGIFridays for Hollywoodies (by jeephat)

Friday night...our 2nd visit. Two members of my party stepped out for a cigarette, and upon return their 1/3 drank drinks had been cleared, and seats at the bar filled. When they questioned the bartender she blankly told them that they'd been CUT OFF . . . ONLY AFTER 3 DRINKS. She bluntly told us that her manager had cut them off. When we asked if we could speak with him to demonstrate that we weren't trashed and were there in fact, to have a good time, were asked to leave. In short, if you're into an establishment that has no regard for their clientele, and serves mediocre CHILIS/TGIFRIDAYS/APPLEBEES food...then come on down to Smiths. YOU'LL FIND ME AT OUTBACK!

4 Stars: Big surprise! (by mr_c)

It was Friday night and I didn't have anywhere to go. Then my friend invited me to this "cozy little place in hollywood". At first, I said no thanks but then she talked me into it. On the way there, I kept complainig about Hollywood and everything that comes with it. I'm not a big fan of that scene. Anyhow, as we arrived I parked valet then went inside. We didn't have a reservation but the hostess told us if we wanted to eat in a the lounge by the back bar. We agreed.
As we sat down, I started to relax and settle right in. We ordered and had a great meal. I was told last year when I went to Australia that Australian beef was the best in the world, but the New York Strip at Citizen Smith was the best steak ever. It was tender, juicy, and perfectly cut (the jalapeno mac was also great). At the end of dinner, I asked if the steak was Australian and the answer was a surprise to me. I was told that it was from Montana. WOW!
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant. However, I would say that you need to be prepared to dish out some cash.
P.S.- Don't forget to order the New York Strip and the jalapeno mac.

4 Stars: Great food, Beautiful people, Amazing ambience. Make a reservation. (by lblblb)

I had heard both good and bad things about Citizen Smith, and had read some reveiws on this site. Thursday last, myself and four friends had an impromptu going away celebration and decided we'd give it a try. We walked in and were told there would be a wait for a table, so we sat at the long black bar and had a drink. Amazing and design-heavy, the place is something to behold. A place where the important people want to feel important and the beautiful people want to be seen, or scene. After what I would call a reasonable time (about a drink and a half), we were shown outside to our booth. Not as pretty as inside, but nice, outdoors. Actually a bonus to get away from the Jack-FM inspired music that was being played far too loudly inside. By L.A. standards, our waiter was impressive. And then the food came. Mind you, in a place that is scene first, I had my fears. And I love comfort food. And I was blown away. BBQ shrimp, Jalepeno Mac, Nicoise, for starters, all amazing. And I had what was probably the best N.Y. Strip I can remember. I stole bits and bites off everyone's plate and must say I will be back for more. My date's lamb was also amazing.
I recommend this place highly, though I will say the music was off-putting, and if you do not have a reservation, be ready to wait. As the evening went on, the place was packed, so expect it to be when you are ready to go out. It is a scene. I disagree with most of the negative reveiws here, but there are always more negative than positive on sites like these; especially here in Hollywood, where everyone thinks they're a little more important than they really are.

I read many of the negative user reviews and was tempted to turn away from this restaurant. However, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. As reviewed, the service was slow and a bit lacking. However, the food was solid. I had the filet and really like it. The crowd and scene is out of control. I have not seen that many beautiful people in one room in a long time. Wow! I will certainly go back to this place and next time try to get one of the large booths in the front room.

this spot is GORGEOUS, particularly the outside patio.. but it's overpriced, pretentious and not as cool as it thinks it is. i've been here three times, and the music is always annoying (bad 80's rock at loud volumes). the drinks are served in pretty mason jars, though, and on a hot summer night, its spectacular. valet is overpriced, though.. good place for a romantic rendezvous. that's it.

2 Stars: You call this food? (by peggyarcher)

I really wanted to like this place. Really, I did. My friends have raved about it, and there's always a tantalizingly attractive crowd smoking out front, so heeded the siren call and had dinner there.

The room is gorgeous (sort of Shabby Chic meets Sanford and Son), and the staff are all incredibly nice - but none of them are going to be rocket scientists any time soon; they've all very clearly been hired for looks and not ability. When we asked for the wine special (A Soave - I LOVE Soave) which was written on the huge chalkboard on the wall, she said "Um, I don't know if we have that."

The bartender (also nice but not too bright) was unable to find a wine list, and made me a terrible martini (which is what I settled for when it became clear that I wasn't going to get any wine).

The food came out quickly enough - but my hamburger was overcooked and the french fries were tough (how does one make a french fry tough?). My companion's fried chicken was bland-tasting although not overcooked, and the mac and cheese was watery.

The portions, however, were gargantuan - you'll pay a lot for the terrible food, but you'll get a mountain of it.

Go for the scene (pretty people, nice room, friendly staff), but eat somewhere else.

4 Stars: Citizen Sux Indeed (by justindoes)

I second every complaint so far- rude and obnoxious staff, too long of a wait to get seated (30 minutes after my reservation time), too long of a wait to get served (50 minutes!), mostly bland food (except for the ahi, which was awesome), and an impotent managerial staff who did nothing to speed up the service or quell the attitude of the waitperson serving us. We told four people we were short one place setting- the host, the server, the busser, and the manager. Still, I had to share a fork with one of my party for half the meal. Wow.

I used to love this place I thought they had a great menu but I just went there again recently and apparently the chef changed and so did the menu so all my favorite dishes were replaced with something else. I thought I would give it a try anyway, my friend had the filet mignon and it wasn't good, I had the ahi tuna dish, it was disgusting and unflavorful. The drinks are still overpriced, the hostess was rude and abnoxious for no reason. We were seated right by the patio door, which makes this ridiculously loud and annoying sound throughout the whole evening and we tried to move but of couse the hostess would not let us. The desserts are bland and their menu is just pitiful.

Save yourself from the attitude and the hassle and just skip it. The hostess could not have had a worse attitude if she tried. We showed up on time for our reservation and she acted like she was doing us a favor by making us wait 40 minutes at the bar. The restaurant wasn't even that busy. We purposely tried to stay pleasant towards her so we could get seated, but nothing can quell an attitude problem that large. I don't need to spend my hard earned money in a place that treats its guests as if they're lucky to be there. You couldn't pay me to go back. YUCK.

I was extremely disappointed with my night at Citizen Smith. Beside waiting for a half hour for our server to even acknowledge our table and charging us $10 for a couple of sides of salad dressing, we saw her eating our macaroni and cheese behind the DJ stand as we waited for 2 hours for ours to arrive. When it finally did, it was wrong. When we sent it back, instead of making a new one, the cooks added the additional ingredient to our picked at dish and mixed it around a bit. The service here was the worst that I have ever received in any restaurant.

We ate in Citizen Smith last month - it was amazing, with huge portions of
fantastic food, and great service. I see a pattern in all these reviews, that if there
are a lot of attractive young customers and wait staff in a restaurant, the place "sucks"
to a lot of reviewers, even if the food and service are teriffic. Sad.

2 Stars: They Must Have A Great PR Company (by mcduffy)

This restaurant is nothing but hype! I went, expecting a great dining experience, and came out with a bad taste in my mouth. The hostess was rude and unbecoming a restaurant that obviously wants to be the next BIG thing, and the food was boring, the ambience uninspired and the service perfunctory at best. This restaurant is definitely riding a wave for the moment, but it's destined to go the way of all mediocre enterprises.

3 Stars: A Bit Disappointing (by adelly)

Had my birthday dinner there last night (supposedly Wednesdays are hot) with my girlfriends and was a little bit disappointed after having read & heard so much about it. The decor was not Thomas Schoos's best but I guess it was aiming for a swanky Texas ranchhouse kind of feel. We had some bland food (pasta, mushroom appetizer, spinach) that we couldn't finish, but we also had some decent stuff like the ahi (cooked how it should be) & the creamy mussels. Was surprised that the bill only came out to $115 pre-tip for 3. I expected a better crowd, though.

2 Stars: Great Space, Poor Quality Food and Service (by cranedoggie)

Atmosphere was terrific. I'll give 'em that. $10 drinks, cold mac & cheese that only had flavor of jalapeno's. Got the TASTELESS PORK CHOP. It was TASTELESS. It had chunks of apples, but really, NO APPLE FLAVOR. Mentioned it to the server who provided no solution. The candle centerpiece started smoking. Then a fire errupted. The bus boy dumped glasses of water over the flames then he took off. We were stuck damming the water with our napkins. Positive note, the creme brulee was really creamy and tasted fantastic.

1 Stars: Service Sucks (by nicolispamoli)

These people need to get it together as far as service. I made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and got an email confirmation, but was told when I got there that it was only for 2 not 4 and they made us wait while they "searched the hills" for a table. Some place are worth putting up with that, but this is NOT one of those places. They are rude and snooty. The only reason I would go back is for the mac and cheese.

the staff has a grand view of self importance. The act like they are splitting atoms over there. Give me a break, your a hostess. Also, drinks were ok.

sure, if you want to go to the next trendy restaurant for the next six months go, but dont expect good service. This place is a joke. We ordered wine which took an hour to get, then the waitress took our order, the food came out 45 minutes later, which the order was wrong and then she never came back to the table. filled with tacky people, this is a total waste of time and money.

We love this place! its so NY and really beautifully done. the food is so savory and simply delicious! we really love the vibe and people.

i am surprised about some of the other 'reviewers' comments about the service... the first 2 or 3 times we went there were minor delays in being seated or receiving the food but the staff was apologetic each time and kept the drinks coming. we chalked it up to it being a new place working out its very few kinks and have been going regularly since, having had great experiences each time.

to you nay-sayers I say give Smith another chance...

2 Stars: Service is horrible (by lum30)

Long story short, we witnessed the manager catch on fire by the tiki lamps that were on outisde in the patio where we were seated. My friend was very near catching on fire as well. We were never asked once if we were OK, or if we wanted to be moved to a table inside.

We couldn't see sh*t! Much less even see our food that we were eating. The waitress had attitude every time we called her over (which was not many times). And the time it took to get our food and our waitresses attention was not acceptable.

The service sucks a big one. The ambience is cool but not worth the food and service that you have to deal with.

1 Stars: HORRIFIC SERVICE (by arivkin)

in the middle of our dinner, our party of 4 were moved, not once but twice because of "reservation issues."
there was no gesture of apology.
when i suggested to the manager that she should comp our one $10 desert, i was told that i was being "presumptuous."
she went to confer with "the chef" and returned to say that she will not comp anything and that in all of her years of restaurant experience, she had never heard of such a gesture for inconveniencing customers.
this is outrageously pathetic service!
it shows a complete disregard for the dining experience of the customer. the attitude may be in line with the "too cool for school" hollywood schtick, but it won't fly in the real world.

The decor in this hip, chic, very New York feeling establishment is amazing. Spot on! I am not sure if there is a more lovely bar in LA. The service (except the bartender who had a lot of attitude and was unfriendly) was wonderful. However, the food was uninspired and lacked any real taste. We had chicken, burgers and salads... none of which were worth returning for or really worth the price tag. There are much better places to eat in the same area!

Just down home food that is tasty and filling. The dessert God, Chef Will Gotay came out to see if the Pecan Pie was ok. OK!!?? I have been dreaming about it since the other night. Awesome.
4 Stars: Finally, a neighborhood spot on Cahuenga (by ethanfrome)

So, the food is not amazing, but you won't pay through the nose, either. The decor is fantastic, the service was great(when I was there), and the staff was totally down to Earth. In fact, the last bartender that served us was, arguably, the best I've seen in LA - instead of dealing with a model wannabe, we actually got killer drinks - and that speaks well of the folks behind the Citizen Smith.

I live nearby, and most Cahuenga joints are slanted towards the obnoxious, weekend Orange County crowd. Citizen Smith, for all its flash, is quite the opposite. I hope it can maintain its friendly vibe under the club glare. Maybe not, but, for now, it's great.

Our experience was terrific. The place is absolutely stunning and a total surprise. While the hostess was a bit distracted when we entered, we were seated quickly--although note that we did have a 10 pm reservation. The food was better and less expensive than we expected, and our only complaints were the banquette seats which are so low you end up feeling like a child sitting at the table, and the music was earsplittingly loud. It was turned down a few decibles for us, so that was appreciated. It had a very New York feel to it and we've already recommended it to friends.

1 Stars: Room For Improvement (by missfoodie2006)

The O-Bar folks have succeeded again with great decor, but came up short at CS with service and food. Hostess was very slow to seat us and crammed our party into a small booth outside (although we had reservations and the restaurant was virtually empty, they would not seat us elsewhere). Our busser was really nice and attentive, but the waiters were amateurs lacking in customer service skills. Our entrees took over 1 hour to arrive, without any apologies, updates, or accommodations. The food, I am sorry to say, was not good. Barring the onion soup, which was decent, the steak, burger, tuna, and numerous appetizers were huge disappointments.

If you visit CS expecting O-Bar quality of service and food, you'll be disappointed. CS has potential, and I hope they will learn from their shortcomings and improve soon.

4 Stars: Good, not great (by johnsontrafton)

While the atmosphere is fantastic, the overall dining experience is barely above average for the cost. The staff is friendly and attractive, but not entirely on top of things. The food is good, but nothing to write home about. I had a beautiful looking filet mignon that was of top quality but was prepared rather blandly - neither the balsamic reduction nor the bearnaise did much to enhance the flavor. Tomato soup was like a marinara sauce. Blackened Ahi was a bit spicy but very tasty. Caesar salad was average. House wines were laughable for a steak house of this caliber.

5 Stars: Sexy Ambience & Amazing Food (by m28l)

This place is fabulous! From the decor to the food everything here seems to work perfectly. I had the New York strip steak with the Jalapeno mac n cheese. If you are really hungry, start with the onion ring tower or the Cajun shrimp. I havent had a steak that good in a long time. Afterwards we hung out by the bar while Citizen Smith transformed into a bar/restaurant scene after 12 or so. I am going back for sure!

5 Stars: Get Your Citizenship (by 1spin)

Amazing decor, great vibe, very cozy and warm with a fantastic outdoor dining area. Who would think fried chicken and Angus beef steaks work together so well on the same menu? Try the muscles steamed in butter and wine...never had any this wonderful! The tower of onion rings are killer. Make a reservation today.

4 Stars: Fabulous (by missangela2u)

All around great - I agree with the previous reviewer that it is very NYC-esque. The decor is really interesting, the food fantantic (horseradish mashed potatoes, yum) and the service attentive. Highly recommended.

5 Stars: Love this place! Love the space! (by roryjames)

Finally a restaurant that gets the balance of chic, cool, amazing food and reasonable prices. Very NYC...

Had dinner there with large groups of friends twice now and everyone loved it! The staff and management were gracious (no LA attitude but cool) and the food was incredible the jalape?o mac-n-cheese, the slider mini burgers and onion ring tower (yum!) and fried chicken, oh my! SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT!

5 Stars: New hip spot...with more than just great food... (by emh4)

I was at the grand opening for Citizen Smith on Wednesday, February 1st and had a great time. The opening was packed and was more of a bar if anything so I went back on Saturday night for a meal. I arrived at midnight and sampled the afterhours menu. The food was great, prompt service, and we had a large party in a private booth. I am going to go back and try their main menu for dinner very soon.

It is a great place if you want a nice meal for dinner, a late night bite or drink (they are open until 4am), have a private party, or just get a drink with some friends.
