After acquiring my Italian Greyhound from Russo's, at 3 months old, she had just finished a course of antibiotics for a cough that she had while in Russo's. We brought her home, only to find out that 1 month later, I was back at the vet for a skin condition from group housing. Not living close to their vet, I had to rearrange my work schedule to attend appts. She had drops first, orally daily, then pills, then skin scraping twice and then a skin test that was grown to see what was the cause. After that process, I saw a drop of blood on her bed. There we go, back to the vet. A urinalysis was taken when she was getting her spay, only to come back positive. She then needed to go on a soy diet for a month, so I had to go buy the dog food for that.Lastly, while running, she started lifting her back right leg, I took her again to the vet.She has a congenital or hereditary condition from the breeder "BRULE CREEK KENNEL." for luxating patellas. Her kneecaps pop out of place at any given time. She has this condition in BOTH back legs! I called and asked Russo's manager to give me the phone number of the breeder (since you can't find it anywhere). She has not gotten back to me yet! Russo'o covers 150% of the price of what you pay for the animal. This would be $1,125.00 towards this congenital surgery. Guess what the price is for 1 leg...$2,500.00! Times 2, for me! It is sad to think that they sell and do not cover the conditions for their buyers. What good is getting an animal to love and take care of, if you can not afford $5, 000.00 to keep it? So, I tell you, in a matter of the 5 months I have had my dog, ALL of the above has happened!!! Think TWICE before buying any animal from RUSSO"S!!

I already have two dogs (a 2 yr old Staffordshire and 6 year old Toy Poodle) and one cat (2 yr old Mexican Shorthair.) All three were rescue animals. One from the Pasadena SPCA, LA Animal Services and the third was found as a runty flea infested kitten in downtown Los Angeles.
I've never considered purchasing a companion animal from a breeder or store because it is true that there are so many animals in shelters just waiting for a loving home.
However... Fate brought me into Russo's @ Fashion Island last week. I went inside just to take a peak and liked what I saw! Never have I been to a pet store where the animals were so playful and happy. If they weren't sleeping they were cuddling or running about there cages. I'm not a professional but they all seemed to be in great health!
Both of my rescue dogs had kennel cough when I took them home and several medical problems, just want to say that pups and kitties from upscale pet stores aren't the only ones that have these types of common problems. (In response to some earlier reviews)
Before I knew it I had fallen in love with a Miniature Schnauser, a little girl who my family has now named Nona. We love her so much and are very happy for the new addition to our family.
Sumi was our sales assistant and she was such a help in providing everything we needed for Nona's homecoming. Russo's was very honest and gave us a $300 discount since Nona had been there for almost two months waiting for a home. I was so surprised by this! (And happy of course) Before leaving the store they gave us a bag of freebies and had Nona bathed and groomed. They even carried all of my bags to my car so I could hold Nona on the way out.
Thank you Russo's! I have a full house now but will definitely stop in next time with Nona for a visit.

Cynthia M., I had to comment after reading your review. My mini Aussie, now age 8, came from Brule Creek Kennel, via Russo's. He was diagnosed with congenital medial patella luxation in both back knees after 1yr, 2mos, so we weren't even eligible for the 150% of purchase price towards vet fees. When I informed Russo's they didn't much seem to care since it didn't cost them anything. Well, it cost me $6,000 for two knee surgeries, not including the 6 month recoveries, special slings, containment areas, and life-long prescriptions to reduce inflamation. Obviously, they haven't changed much in the past 8 years. If you care, email the Irvine City Council to vote yes on their animal welfare ordinance coming up for a vote soon. email: IrvineCC@cityof Irvine.org. Our surgeries enabled our dog to still be walking at age 8 and I wish you the best success with your pet.

Please don't bother complaining to Russo's about their shady "business." The Irvine Company manages Fashion Island. Please contact those below (at Irvine) and let them know you won't be shopping there until Russo's stops buying and selling sick animals.

Media contacts:
Jane Gillespie: (949) 733-2198
Laura Davis: (949) 720-3313

If Russo's gets stops selling live animals, then they're as welcome as any other respectable retail store. Until then, they're simply a clearing house for puppy mills and kitten mills.

This shop is pandering to the society trends of south orange county and is overseen by The Irvine Co. which is nothing short of a monopoly and will never do a thing against these stores due to the business they attract with pure suckers who are lured by cute puppy's in the window, but have not done any research, preparation or self education on what they are supporting. What idiots would throw money at a store that buys all their puppy's from mass puppy mills out of Iowa, with no care to investigate conditions of where there dog is coming from, business principles, or the perpetuating crime of overproducing puppies that have a 80% likelihood of ending up sick, with kennel cough, or hyperglycemia, or ptsd, and will be inevitably surrendered to shelters and breed rescues much of the time. People why are you throwing away thousands of dollars for buying unhealthy puppies and reinforcing this terrible cycle! Stop being OC drones!

I walked into Russo's yesterday at the Irvine Spectrum, and saw many puppies that were underage to be shipped on a plane, many that appeared sick and runts (aka teacups) with difficulty breathing and listless. Worse off they will give a puppy to anyone who has money regardless of that puppy's future welfare, whether the owners are fit to care for it, or the puppy is appropriate for the family. For a area set on high standards of living, you sure set the bar low for human decency and compassion for animals.

Please we urge you not to purchase a puppy from Russo's by purchasing a puppy from Russo's you are not Adopting One as the Store would like you to believe. Please use your Wallets as a weapon and boycott Russo's Pet Stores until they stop Selling Puppies and profiting off the backs of Man's Best Friend.

Ask them where the puppies come from or better yet look on their cards required by law in the state of California and then look them up in the FDA Reports to see how many Violations the Breeder has had at this facility. What you will find will shock you.

Please Adopt from a Shelter or Rescue and Save a Life. Purchasing a Puppy from a Pet Store is NOT Adoption. It's just plan purchasing and supporting a horrible industry. Please break the cycle and teach your children the truth of what Pet Shops really are.

How much is the PARENTS of those cute Puppies in the Window Worth to You?

Visit us on the web at http://www.desperatepawsofocdogclub.org and join us in our Club for our Puppy Mill Awareness Walk this Holiday Season at Fashion Island. You and Your Dog will be Glad You Did!

One Last Note. Please Don't Be Fooled by their new Stance on Adoption as an Option by having a Rescue come out for adoption Events on the Weekend. The only thing they allow are Cats at the Adoption Events and their Only Goal is make you think they actually care about Dog Welfare. If they did they would stop selling Man's Best Friend! In fact if you visit this rescue website you will see the huge Ad Campaign they are running on their Pages for Russo's as the Elite Pet Shop inside Fashion Island. Don't Be fooled visit them and see for yourself.

On nov. 27,2010, a friend and i went in to browse and see the different types of animals. we were quite delighted to see that they sell breaded Dragons, having 3 ourselves and my friend working with reptiles is very knowledgeable & can spot a sick or uncared for reptile, and immediately noticed that this particular bearded dragon was in the early stages of metabolic bone disease which is caused from improper husbandry. We immediately asked where the UVB lighting was they said they did not have any nor did they sell any. The associates nor the manager on duty were educated in the proper care of reptiles nor did they act in the least bit concerned. We bought the baby bearded dragon to properly care for him & with hopes to correct the bone disease. Also there was two other customers talking with the manager about the way the dogs were kept and how they were fighting, The whole experince was very unnerving and you could tell instantly that this pet store is more for the money than the care of there animals.

But when they sold the store the quality and everything Russo's stood for went away so I quit Duck and Chicks were sold dogs came from unknown breeders and bad quality Russo's brothers would of never sold anything they would not stand behind.

Russo's Pet Experience looks clean at first, I was pleased with the look of most of the puppies. But a litter of Maltese puppies on a top cage were covered in their own stool. They were very open about buying their puppies from Brule Creek Kennel. If they are open about it please google the kennel name before buying a dog from there!! They buy from puppy mills and from people illegaly selling dogs from Mexico. Aside from the puppies, the birds were dirty and had filthy water. A canary had very severly over grown nails. I don't know how the poor thing was even standing. They don't have a very wide selection of pet products and overal Puppies are their #1 cash crop. I recomend not shopping here.

Russo's Pets gets many of their pets from puppy mills. Puppy mills breed too many animals in terrible conditions all the while healthier animals in shelters are being gassed, heart-sticked, euthanized, and other ways of mass killing these companion animals.

If you're going to get a pet, save a life adopt.

All of you people who think that this is an upstanding business that sells "healthy animals" ought to think twice about your animal IQ. I include myself in your group. It had been 30 years since I had made any type of purchase, big or small at Russo's, and the last my family had made was a Lhasa Apso puppy back when the main store was on Bristol. Abby was a great dog; she lived to be 22 with no major health issues. When I went to purchase a puppy for myself, I went to a breeder who bred show dogs. I was disgusted by how they didn't "handle" their animals if the "handler" wasn't there, and how the dogs all lived in play-pens. 17 years later, I bought a puppy from Russo's partly because that's where we had bought our family pet, partly because I was heartbroken over the loss of my baby and I couldn't wait to go find the perfect dog at the perfect breeder...what I got was $2000 in vet bills that remain un-reimbursed, and more heartbreak. My puppy is most-likely dead, and in 13 days, I visited the vet or the 24 hour vet 5 times, because he refused to eat. I had to force feed hm every 2 hours. My vet bills out-priced what CA laws state I may be reimbursed, but what do you do at 2 AM? One Saturday morning, he went into a coma in his kennel. I wiped corn syrup all around the inside of his mouth and gums as instructed. He snapped out. That was the day I had to sign him over to Russo's vet: That was the day I actually had to argue with the manager of the store about how "they don't cover hypoglycemia" to get my money refunded. I urge you to read the CA Health and Safety Codes before signing all those papers they want you to sign at Russo's, because the law says they cover every item that they say they won't. I have since purchased another puppy from a wonderful little shop in orange which is owned and operated by a veterinary group and my puppy has allergies. They will cover all allergy related expenses until she either outgrows them, finds a treatment that cures, or for life. Now that is service! I will never buy as much as a can of dog food from Russo's ...it's a shame because the poor kids who work there really love animals.

Many puppies come from Brule Creek Breeders who house hundreds of dogs in kennels in IA. At http://www.petshoppuppies.org/ you can have them check the animal for you if you get the info from one of the sales people. I just think it's very odd to have so many different breeds coming from the same breeders. I would rather rescue the parents from such commercial mill. The USDA needs to come up with a better way of checking these places out. Once every several years is not enough!

This store is one of the happiest pet stores in the southern California area. The pets are always lively and active and appear healthy. The store and employees allow petting to be done in top-open enclosures that are designed for interaction even with younger children, and the employees are friendly, professional and always eager to assist and answer questions. It is one of my favorite pet stores in southern California, and I have no qualms with buying a pet from this store.

Over the past 17 years years we have welcomed into our home 2 cats and 2 dogs from Russo's. We have never gotten a sick or illtempered animal -- only the loves of our lives! I still come in whenever I can to get my puppy fix since my 2 dogs and 1 surviving cat from Russo's are getting a little too old to welcome a new family member. When the time comes, I will not hesitate to bring home my next "baby" from Russo's.

Pros: I have had only great experiences here

Cons: Can't take on another pet right now!

.

Got a mini pin in December, the dog actually has one of the best temperaments I've seen in a dog, calm and sweet.. how ever it was the first and probably the last time I will buy a pet from Russo's.. besides the kennel cough he had when we bought him (yes in the general population of puppies) they are dishonest .. they charge you for a chip that they say they put in all the dogs. while getting my dog fixed at my vets we had them check the chip they used different scanners from different brands and couldn't find one.

He??s super friendly with people and dogs and have a very high enthusiasm for life. He??ll need an active home that is willing to work with a young puppy. He will definitely need some training. We are currently working on potty training and crate training. He originally came from Russo??s pet store. The owner abandoned him after he came down with pneumonia. contact rescuer

I work near this place and walk through on occasion. Today i noticed a dog there that they told me had been sold over a month ago and claimed it was 3 and a half months old (which they told me the last time i saw it) and that it had been sick and just got back from the vet.
I believe the dog was probably returned because it was sick and it is much older than 3 and half months old. Unfortunately for Russo's Wheaten's got through many colors as puppies and clearly give away the age. This dog is between 9 and 6 months old, not 3.5 months.
Please do not buy from this place!!!

Watch out. I purchased a puppy from this store and it developed PARVO, a life threatening virus. According to their contract they would provide care and this dog was supposed to have a health guarantee. Spoke with Sumi, the manager and she plainly said TOO BAD! There was nothing she was going to do and said the owner would call me. Still no call. $1800.00 Vet bill and no help from the store. Disputing with my credit card company and willing to go to court on this one!

Older puppies can be walked by anyone who has an ID, on weekdays during the day. Has their vet come in and check on the puppies. If people are complaining about the bedding, why don't you guys pitch in and donate beds? Usually puppies are teething and they chew up the bed, so beds are usually washed and the fluff just comes out, so you can't do anything about that. Puppies birthdays and arrival dates are different. Usually puppies don't stay longer than 2 weeks at the store. There are new puppies that comes in every weds. I wish I could buy all the puppies in the store, but I have no money. All the puppies make me feel better. Puppies are usually rotated out and fed during the day. NONE of the puppies are left to starve!!!! Puppies are washed. Puppies bite because they are teething! I too is an animal lover. If you people think this is horrifying, then don't go to pet stores in Asia, you'll probably die of a heart attack.

We got our tiny Pomeranian at Russo's and she is the BOMB!! She is healthy, super alert and SUPER SUPER smart!! I want to thank the breeders, because she is the most beautiful, special dog ever. She is potty-trained after only 3 weeks (knock on wood, huh?). We were told by many, that small dogs like her would take a year to potty-train, but she caught on real quick. She knew her name in one day and would come when called. She goes wee wee and poos on command, on her weepad and outside - happened within days of owning her. Not to say she hasn't had a few mishaps, but mainly, she goes to her weepad to go. She is very social and loves all people and animals. We cannot go anywhere without nearly every person stopping and "aweing" over how cute she is and how good she is. We are very blessed with her and have had a great experience thus far. Each day gets better and better. She is very loyal and a lap dog, so sweet. Thank you!!

I agree that these dogs are from puppy mills even though the owner says they are not from puppy mills. They lie through their teeth because they are greedy and in business to make money even if it means suffering for the little puppies and kittens. There are many animals waiting to be adopted from the Orange County Animal shelter and cost alot less than purchasing from a pet store. Why are we a throw away society? There are so many animals that get euthanized every year because there so many animals that come from puppy mills or because people just don't want to take care of the animal anymore or just have to give it up. I used to work at Russo's and know firsthand that the puppies were often sick. Don't buy from pet stores anymore..simple as that. If you buy from pet stores like Russo's then you are still supporting puppy mills. Many of the dogs come from Missouri, Kansas, and Pennsylvania where puppy mills are common.

A few years ago, when I was new to the horror of puppy mills and breeders, I walked into this shop while visiting from Illinois. I had just adopted my new Maltese puppy and was missing him dearly so I thought I will visit the puppies in this shop. What I saw left me running from the store in tears and searching for a number for the nearest animal welfare department. I called the number to file a complaint and before I could even get out all the details, the officer said to me "let met guess, Russo's at Fashion Island?" I was mortified that this man knew of the atrocities going on there but had not done anything to stop it. He explained that they visit them quite often, looking for any "legal" reason to shut them down. He also made me aware that until the laws change to protect these poor animals, stores like Russo's will continue to operate. Its appalling but legal!! Something besides reviews on a website need to be done.

I went into this store looking for a hamster for my daughter. What I saw was horrifying and haunts me to this day! I saw a too-full cage of baby rats. One was being attacked by the others who had chewed a hole in its side, and it was still alive! I could not find a single staff person who would respond. It was horrible!

I was scouting for a friend who was looking fir a Yorky puppy. I went to Russo`s. I will never go there again. I was crying the whole time seeing some puppies with a blanket, some with a bed and some just sleeping on the wire floor of the cages. I would say in the majority was the lack of bedding for these babies.

In the font window were 2 little puppies playing in the shredded paper with no water, no bed and no food.

The shop charges a fortune for puppies; and to me it reflects the kind of concern this place has for the animals by the lack of care given these babies.

Shameful and should be reported.

We're all against puppy and kitten mills (well, at least those of us with a shred of sense and decency), but venting on these sites is only so helpful. If you want to make more of an impact, contact The Irvine Company who owns the property. Let them hear your voice. Let them know you don't condone this end-product of animal torture. If everyone in the U.S. stopped buying from pet stores for just one year, puppy (and other animal) mills would go out of business altogether. Here is the contact info for Irvine Company:

Corporate Offices
Irvine Company

General E-mail Inquiries -- webmaster@irvinecompan...

Media Contacts: Jane Gillespie (949) 733-2198 or Laura Davis (949) 720-3313

Please let Irvine know you want Russo's out of Fashion Island if they refuse to stop selling animals. If they get rid of the animals, they're as welcome as any respectable tennant. There is strength in numbers; let's get it done.

I purchased the adorable long haired Chihuahua in the window from a Russos 12 years ago. His tag said he was from Kansas, which I now know is puppy mill breeding ground. He was so young to have been transported across the country, I thought, but so cute. As much joy as he has brought to our lives, it kills me every day to watch him now suffer over the last two years with severe end stage congestive heart failure. A later in life disease process that occurs as a result of "BAD BREEDING" and genetic ignorance. He requires three different medications twice a day. His lungs fill up with fluid with any activity which makes "playtime" impossible anymore. We carry him up the stairs every time and take him out multiple times during the night because he gets medication at night to keep the fluid down. He coughs and sputters and gags. All I can ask myself is "when is the time I should put him to sleep," then he looks at me and breaks my heart all over again. I now spend all my time volunteering at my local Animal Shelter and try to make the public aware that there are wonderful dogs that need homes and they are NOT disposable!! ALL puppies grow up to be dogs so please go to your animal shelter and save just one more dog from being euthenized. DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE... PLEASE!!!! It only keeps the cruel greed crazed factory puppy mill owners in business.

I've had 4 dogs(on the 4th one now) none of which were bought from a retail store OR a breeder. My first dog was a black lab that we had for 12 1/2 years until unfortunately she was hit by a car during a very stormy night(RIP Magic). The second two were another black lab (suicide, RIP Lady) and a yellow lab (Died of cancer, RIP Max). I had Max and Lady for 13 1/2 years. Now I have an italian greyhound whom ive had for 3 years and he is wonderful. What do all of these dogs have in common? No health problems, good diet, excellent temperment, great with other pets(dogs, cats, etc.) great with humans including small children(as i know some dogs have problems with little kids), and last but not least we rescued all of them from the same place, Orange County Animal Shelter in Orange, CA(Note I know Magic was rescued from a shelter but I cannot verify which one as I was only 1 year old when we rescued her).

My buddy recently adopted a puppy from Russo's and has had a negative experience with the puppy and health problems(cannot go into details as things have not been settled yet between him and Russo's).

My cousin adopted her dog a Chihuahua-mix (slightly larger than a chihuahua yet color scheme is tan body with black face, color scheme reminiscent of a pug but head/body look like chihuahua or jack russell terrier not flat like pug) from a reputable breeder and her dog has had no health problems as well as being very well behaved with a great temperment.

All in all, shelters and breeders seem to be the best places(there are exceptions to every rule) to find a great pet.

Don't listen to all the bad reviews. I have a Golden who is 11 and is still energetic and healthy. I also have a Scottish Fold who is healthy and playful at age 5. I had a rabbit but it died of old age. I got all these pets at Russo's and I am looking forward to getting more there.

Russo's Pets should have been shut down by the Irvine Company a long time ago and this still holds true today. Greed and not enough public involvement keeps their doors open. The puppies and the kittens (and other animals) are so darn cute that it is easy to get sucked into purchasing from this place, especially when a young child is begging to take home that cute animal in the window.

PLEASE BOYCOTT buying pets from this pet store! You and/or your family members will be met with a sick pet and possible a dying pet that will have many, many medical problems. No one should have to buy a pet that becomes ill, even if the illness is parasites and/or kennel cough. Parasites can kill a young puppy or kitten and it has from this pet store. When you buy a pet, it should be 100% healthy.

Save yourself the heartache and take the time to research independent local California breeders and DO NOT buy from Russo's or any other pet store. You deserve a healthy pet from day one. Russo's is a greed based, overpriced business that could care less if you take home a sick pet.

I bought a english bulldog from Russo's Pet Store about 8 years ago. I know for a fact that this dog was a puppy mill dog. Maggie past away on 12/21/07. Even though I had many problems with her I kept taking her to the vet and after many evaluations found out she was a puppy mill dog. I am very unhappy with this pet store. I would not ever recommend this company to anyone.

I have read many reviews tonight on Russo's and have to tell you I am in shock by the negativity written about them. However, many of the bad reviews were over a year old, and the recent postings that seem to slam Russo's appear to be ill informed about post-purchase expectations (i.e. "dog wasn't suppose to shed and did", kennel cough...IT'S LIKE CHICKEN POX. That's why Russo's pays for the care. What more do you want??).

We bought a Mini Pin from Russo's last Friday and couldn't be happier. This puppy is amazing. A personality that is truly unbelievable and evolves every day into something bigger and better. I researched the breeder since bringing Tucker home and found that this particular B-R-E-E-D-E-R has turned out dogs that have won Westminster Best in Show's...plural, meaning multiple wins. Unfortunately, puppy mills have ruined it for the TRUE breeders, and I feel bad that people don't take the time to do THEIR research BEFORE buying a puppy. If you find a puppy at Russo's, why not go home and research the breeder...the breed...the PET SHOP??? Then make an informed decision and either go back for the puppy, or chose not to go back at all.

Our experience with Russo's has been minimal which translates into...they sold us a healthy, well-adjusted, WONDERFUL addition to our family. We couldn't be happier and will be there tomorrow to look for more "Tucker's".

Oh...he DOES have kennel cough. GASP. And we were soooo inconvenienced. We had to drive to the vet, pick up medicine, NOT pay for anything and drive away. It was terrible. And to make things worse, Tucker takes his meds like a champ and is fine to date. I may just be a proud puppy parent, but I think he's nearly perfect.

We love Tucker!

Pros: Strong Breeders

Cons: Actual stores are too small and cramped. Feels to chaotic during the busy times. Not good for the puppies/kitties.

"I am also breeder and I choose Russo's specifically because I believe it unethical to transport animals." NONSENSE -- sell locally then! "Unlike a lot of breeders, I know where my kittens go." How? Sometimes, kittens for pet store sale are obtained from "kitten mills" where breeding practices may be less than optimum. Frequently, pure bred kittens sell for considerably more at a pet store than from a pure bred breeder. ..." http://www.cfa.org/cbrs-2.html "Having said that, even if you visited the breeder yourself, you would have the same outcome. Just like we have no control over the health of humans, animals are therefore under the same lack of control." Nonsense! Breeders have a HUGE influence over the kitten's health-- from genetic screening though nutrition to cleanliness to parasite control, etc! " Start your complaints to directly to the source, the breeders licensing bureas." Nonsense! There ARE no Breeder's licensing bureaus! CFA does not license breeders!

I worked at Russo's for a year. While under new management much was done to improve the store and the health of the animals, I must say that the puppies were absolutly top priority. The owners are very sympathetic to puppies who do come in ill. It is not the fault of the store, puppies, like kindergarteners catch colds. The moment we saw any indication, we would rush them to the vet for 100% medical care no matter what it cost! If you find the right staff member, they will happily chat with you about making the correct decisions. Older puppies are quickly discounted to try to place them in homes ASAP! We always wanted them to go home and be happy. Employees often took home older pups for the night so they would have ample play time, and the older pups are also walked in the mall for excersise (sometimes we stopped at the ice cream store for a sample spoon of vanilla for the puppy). I no longer work there, but miss it very much. I've since become a dog trainer at Petsmart in Folsom CA. PLEASE!! Advice to novice pet purchasers... RESEARCH THE BREED!! make sure this is what you want. Jack russels are not mellow dogs. Dogs need training, they are not born knowing what we want! Go to your free health exams, Russo's is very good about paying vet bills within those 15 days!! Love and cherish your puppy, don't give up on house training. It's always your fault if they won't learn (potty training classes are available at petsmart!) if you don't want to deal with a puppy, ADOPT!! it can be very rewarding! The store was also cleaned from top to bottom everymorning, and feces are removed as soon as we see it.

Anne and anyone else insane or stupid enough to purchase a pet from a retail pet store -The second sentence in your post says it all - you paid a high price for sick puppies!!! You also paid for the privilege of giving profit to your veterinarian, because if you think treating the "parasites and kennel cough" was expensive just wait until you add up all the expenses that a poorly bred dog will incur!!THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO- NONE-ZERO- REDEEMING FACTORS OF PURCHASING A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE!!!ANY BREEDER WHO HAS A HEART LARGER THAN A PEBBLE WOULD NOT SEND ONE OF THEIR "BABIES" OUT TO A 3RD OR 4TH PARTY TO BE SOLD NOT KNOWING WHERE THAT DOG WILL END UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!By buying a pet store dog - you have put money in the pockets of puppy millers, brokers, and those who only breed animals for the quick profit they produce.YOU PAY THE SAME $$$$$ to get a puppy from a responsible, caring breeder who has produced pups from breeding dogs that have:Passed Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA) tests for:Hip dysplasiaElbow dysplasiaThyroid disordersHeart conditionsand CERF (inherited) eye/sight problemsGO TO AKC.ORG - search the breed your interested in, find the Club for that breed, learn about the dog - and contact a breeder involved with the breed club - THAT IS THE ONLY PLACE TO BUY A PUPPY!!!or really do something good - and go to pound!!!

If you live in this neighborhood, the price is of no consequence (as long as the pet is healthy, pretty, and lively). And Russo's will certainly give you whatever experience you're looking for, relatively speaking. Is the place clean? Yes, whatever. It is in a very popular, high fashion, always-crowded-on-weekend mall, for goodness' sake. Since it is always packed in that tiny cubicle of a store, you really can't complain about the floor, unless you really want to lick it. Everything else looks clean enough to live in... And if you're a pet lover, then you have nothing to complain about at all, if you know what I mean. Then again, the crowd is part of the experience, and you will see all kinds of creatures, from the spoiled to the cutest things on earth, until the next time you visit. And yes, the customer service is relatively excellent, depending on who you talk to. Some are more entertaining than others..., of course. I wish the owner move the store to a bigger space within this mall, especially next to the koi pond.

Pros: It's definitely an experience, always.

Cons: Small store

While I understand that there are many bad experiences buying from pet
stores like Russo's. I can honestly say that my experience has been
excellent. While the dogs did come home with parasites and kennel
cough (not unlike from any other breeder), the store was happy to
provide care and medications. They also use a group of vets that are
not in the business to rip off owners with sick dogs. The first 2 vet
visits are paid for in full and all treatments are paid for by the
store and there is a guarantee of 1 year from purchase for all genetic
or persistent issues. While I am sure that my dogs came from what are
classified as puppy mills, I have 2 beautiful, healthy well adjusted
dogs. I would recommend that any persons entering into a lifelong
commitment - would research and take the time to investigate as I did
prior to purchasing VERY EXPENSIVE dogs. That is my chief complaint
with Russo's but in my case - I got what I paid for - awesome & well
adjusted dogs.

Pros: Excellent aftercare for the dogs we have purchased

Cons: Dogs are very pricey

Dirty Dogs: Is Your Best Friend From A Puppy Mill?
David Goldstein
Reporting
(CBS) LOS ANGELES "What do you think of Kate??

?I think she's the best dog ever."

Nine-year-old Janelle Dinsmore loves her golden retriever Kate.

"Your mom said you wanted a dog for a long time. Why?"

?Because they're so fun and entertaining and I get so lonely sometimes," Janelle said.

The Dinsmores shopped around for the right dog -- and were told Kate came from a reputable breeder in California.

Until the police told them the real story -- the dog was from Mexico.

"At that point I was really enraged, angry and sickened that I had basically been duped."

And she's not alone.

"He used to be our dog. He used to be your dog?"

Four-year-old Ava Bogart and her 7-year-old sister Adalia fell in love with their golden retriever puppy Goldie who came from the same litter.

"They loved the golden retriever. They wanted to get it and we finally decided to get it."

But Goldie -- who was also from Mexico -- got sick as soon as they got her home. They ended up returning the dog to the pet store after she was diagnosed with parasites and dehydrated.

"The vet told my wife that if we wouldn't have taken the dog to the vet it would have been dead in 24 hours."

These dogs weren't purchased from backyard breeders or fly by night puppy peddlers. Each was for sale for $2,000. One was purchased here at trendy Fashion Island in Newport Beach, the other at the Irvine Spectrum.

Both were bought at branches of Russo?s Pet Store, where salespeople said the dogs were from California -- and even provided documentation. But the owners later discovered they were smuggled from Mexico.

"When you go to Fashion Island you don't expect to buy a $5 dollar dog off a truck that just came back from Mexico."

Becky Dinsmore is noticeably upset. That's because her puppy is facing two hip surgeries to fix genetic problems she believes stems from the dogs? breeding in Mexico.

At the San Diego border -- federal agents see puppies being imported illegally from Mexico all the time.

In a task force in December -- vehicle searches turned up hundreds of puppies under 3 months old. They were found hidden in a make-up bag and under blankets. And they have hidden dangers.

"Most of these puppies are too young, they have underlying diseases that we can't detect during a five-minute inspection."

But at Russo?s pet store -- the owner, Dan DiGiacomo claims the dogs came from a reputable breeder. And DiGiacomo says the breeder told him the dogs came from California. They didn't and now he says he won't buy from him again.

"I took him at his word. I'm sorry I didn't check up on it. Obviously that was my mistake. But his dogs are quality. It's not like they aren't quality dogs," DiGiacomo said.

But tell that to the Bogart family who had to buy another dog to replace Goldie.

And to the Dinsmore?s. Their dog Kate is facing two serious surgeries -- and many months of recovery they never expected.

"Our last dog we had for 18 years and we waited on purpose to get the right dog.
But we certainly should not be going through this.?

Russo's Pet Experience is the product of greedy and selfish human beings. This pet store supplies puppies exclusively from Brule Creek Kennel - this is a PUPPY MILL! The supposed family run company is non-existent and even worse the man who owns Russo's is a convicted criminal of animal cruelty! This company has been in business for over thirty year now let's ban together and end this horrific company! If you need any more information check out the link I've supplied: http://newportbeach.patch.com/groups/kelly-sawyers-blog/p/bp--blog-puppy-mill-pets-trucked-into-russos-at-fashion-island.

I have recently visited Russo's while shopping at Fashion Island. And guess what! Russo's Pet Experience has moved and expanded. So all you complaining about a tiny space, no need to complain no more. The store seemed neat and tidy. I praise for that. Also, there's only no more than two puppies in one cage. So the cages aren't overcrowded. The puppies seemed well cared for but sad. But you should expect that since they just want a home. However, the staff is SO RUDE! I just asked a few questions about a Shichon (Bichon + Shih Tzu) and that lady rolled her eyes and sighed. Basically all the staff was like that except one. The rest honestly just hung out in the back doing nothing.

Hi everyone, I recently bought a BEAUTIFUL cockalier from russos and he is sooo fun and cute. When we first bought him I was concerned since he was from brule creek kennels that he may have major health or Training problems, but he is very smart and friendly. During the first weeks we had him (Charlie), he can down with the kennel cough so we had the vet check him out Nd she told us that almost every puppy get the kennel cough. Don't judge Russo's!!!!!!
