We saw this and the famous San Diego Zoo, and loved them both...but this was better! There is a recreation of natural habitats and the animals are allowed to roam free within their own compounds. You take a ride through the park seated in the back of an open air truck, and the animals come right up to you at stops. They gave us apple slices to feed to the Rhinos, and Ostriches came right up as well. The best part was the Giraffes, we got to feed them "cookies" that they took right out of your hands with their extra long tongues! Definitely something the kids will love!

So really it is a wild animal park in that the animals are free to roam. However, if the days are hot go a little later in the afternoon and you will definitely see things on the tram ride. Also, the Wild Animal Park supports lots of college research programs and has special camps for kids along with programs where you can pay to feed the animals. Definitely worth it!

PROS: Interactive
CONS: Sometimes hard to see animals

Make no mistake about it--the Wild Animal Park is great! But people often have incorrect images of what the animal park is like.

The animal park is a large expanse where many animals can walk in space. They are still quite confined, and the setting is far from natural.

The benefit of having more space and less restriction is that the animals will exhibit more natural behaviors. Most commonly, the younger rhinos will be much more playful and active than anything you would see at the San Diego Zoo. There are plenty of giraffes and hoofed animals being active as well.

A large part of the Wild Animal Park is the animal shows. My favorite is the "Birds of Flight" show, which is always well-done and shows some really beautiful birds and cool behaviors. I also enjoy the impromptu "meet and greet" shows, where a trainer will bring an animal to the concessions area for a Q&A session.

The Wild Animal Park requires a lot of walking to get the most out of the park. For little kids and the elderly, I'd recommend the San Diego Zoo. But if you're willing to treat this like a walking trip, you'll get much more out of visiting the Wild Animal Park.

The Wild Animal Park gives a real look into the animals their their natural habitat. There is a train that takes you around the park so you can see everything from a distance or you can go on the safari truck (which is a bit pricey but well worth it) to get up close to many of the animals.
