I've known of (Jocko's) since I went to Cal Poly (SLO) as an undergrad which was back in 1995. It was really from a college roommate, actually.

He swore on his mother's grave that it was the best steak in the area. Well, after a 20 minute

I have been eating at Jocko's since the 1950's. Had my wedding reception at the current location in 1966. Eat there as often as I can and love the food. The large spencer is always great. Best pop for your money. My wife likes the steak sandwich from the pit [also a spencer] and is always satisfied.

Pros: GREAT FOOD - FAIR PRICE

Cons: NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION

Upon first walking into this place, it is a bit...off-putting. The brands on the walls and the general cowboy atmosphere tends to be a bit over the top, however the wonderful smells overpower these minor drawbacks.

The seating is on wooden benches and is quite rustic, and the menus seem to be the type you'd expect to find at "Big Earl's Truck Stop" or some such establishment, but again, the wonderful smell from the open cooking area demands that you overlook these trivialities.

The item on the menu which so drew my attention was the Spencer steak, as this is a cut I had been previously unaware of (it is essentially a ribeye). I ordered the smaller portion size, which, as it turned out, was quite filling. Allow me to guide you on this however; Get the larger portion. Take it home.

This steak is possibly the best I've had at a restaurant, although the cooking method does make it difficult to compare to say, Ruth's Chris. The steak appears to be like a roast, almost, about as thick as it is wide, and swimming in its own juices. From the first bite to the last, this is a must for steak lovers.

Having been there several times in the last few years, I have yet to be disappointed. The setting could be better, the sides are forgettable, but the amazing steak more than makes up for it. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Jocko's atmosphere is not what you'd expect from the best steakhouse ever. Go casual. Not to pricey for the amount of food you'll get. You'll have at least an hour wait, but soooo worth it. BEST STEAK EVER!

LOVE little Jockos and Big Jockos... We have been coming here for years, great steaks and reasonably priced. They also have a good selection for children which is nice.

I live in San Luis Obispo and many of my friends recommended Jocko's for an awesome steak. I work during the evening so the only time I had to try Jocko's was during lunch. That was a big mistake. I ordered the steak sandwich, the first thing you would see on the menu. Well, its awful. It seemed to be pan-fried with no taste whatsoever. Absolutely bland. Even though the service was friendly, that's all I could think about on the drive back to slo. All the hype for nothing. And for 16 bucks, I don't expect much, but I could have just went to Firestone's in slo and had a much tastier tri-tip sandwich for half the price. Even more unfortunate, I work at a local hotel in Pismo and I can't even fake recommending Jocko's to guests anymore. Regardless of how tasty their dinner might be, a good restaurant should serve good food from the time they open til the time they close.

Wow. What can I say but WOW!! This place was fantastic. I happened to be here over the Holidays visiting my good friend Rob Spewack and his lovely wife Carry. In a moment of rare genius Rob got a baby sitter and we were out for a night of adult fun and conversation. Upon arriving we were ushured to the bar where the drinks flowed aplenty!! It was a tad bit busy, and after about an hour we were called for our table. I must say we were pretty intoxicated by then and ready to eat. This place sits you next to others (circa middle school) which was a bit off-putting- I am used to quiet and first class amenities- truth be told. But we ended up sitting next to the funniest couple who reminded us of Buzz and Marcia- two of our dearest friends!! The wine kept flowing and the laughter was raucous! But in this place no one cared or noticed- Wonderful!! So finally the steak arrives and I must say this without equivication-- best I have ever had!! hands down!! The night was even better because our new found friends and me and my wife went back to the hotel and had glorious 4 way intercourse!! Cant't wait to tell all my friends!!

My husband and I were referred to Jocko's back in 2000 by a local. You have to trust the locals! We go up to Pismo about every other month to play on the dunes and we "plan" an EARLY dinner on Saturday every time. When I say early, I mean 4:30pm. There is usually not a wait. This also gives you time to digest your food before going out on the dunes again. I like the relish plate before dinner is served but it's really the Salsa that finishes off the 22 oz. filet mignon. The salsa is not served with chips but rather crackers... the only way to go! We even have friends from Riverside come up just for dinner it's that good! Make sure you stop the next time you are passing through!

Found this place back in the 80's when I came to Nipomo to play golf at Black Lake. I have made every effort to stop there anytime I have been close every since.
The steaks are the best and (if they still serve it) the halibut is to die for. Will stop there on our way home from San Jose after Christmas. Sure I could get home on I-5 much faster, but it's Jocko's and steaks.
Some reviews talk about the place being a dump and noisy and a long wait...... yes to all of the above and that's a part of being at Jocko's. If you want fast, go to Jack in The Box, if you want a dinning experience that provides the best steak available, go to Jocko's.
I also need to mention the salad, yes very basic, but the honey mustard dressing more then makes up for the simple salad.......yum!
See ya on the 27th!!!!!

Pros: Great food

Cons: Too far from anywhere

.

The greatest Steak I've ever had, I'm looking forward to going back after christmas.
I got the Spencer and form that day on every time I think about it my mouth starts to water a bit.
We live in Diamond Bar (bout a 3 hour drive) and this the reason we do it.

Jocko's is the best

Jocko's is GREAT!! I was on the West coast to ink an important radio deal with my good friend Grant Napier, and BOY oh BOY did we have a great steak. We got there with no reservations--and the wait was long. But who cares? We hung out at the bar and had multiple drinks and the time just flew. The bar was so fun we almost just stayed there!! But about an hour later they called us and I grabbed my 6th Jamesons and we were off to our table. We sat next to a wonderful couple who reminded me of Dennis Murphy and his lovely (albeit annoying) wife Gladys. The meal was cooked to perfection and the waitress never let my glass get half empty. I LOVED this place. One probllem was in fact the restroom. It looked like it was built for midgets. I am 5'10" about 350 and damn near broke the commode! I felt bad backing up the toilet and letting the water run everywhere after such a great meal, but I was too drunk by that time to care. I promise to tell my buddy Don about it!! Highly recommended.

Cons: Bathroom a bit small

Jockos is very very good!!! I love there breakfast, great breakfast at great prices, can't beat that!!! You get a lot of food for the price you pay!! No Skimping with them!! The lunch there is very good and very filling!! The dinner is also very good! The Spencer is the best its like a filet mignon but reasonable cheaper, plus it will last you another night if you eat wisely!! They have side dishes and reasonably priced. There meat is aged and they are far better than Ruth's Chris Steakhouse!! They use a real bbq pit when cooking there meat, not on an open flame in the kitchen!! Sometimes when your having lunch, they start up that bbq pit!

Can't beat Jocko's!! Best breakfast, lunch and dinner!! Out beats McClintocks, AJ Spurs, but I do have to say that Hitchin' Post and Far Western are near second on my list for excellent steaks and food!! Jocko's is far not cafeteria food (person who commented on comparing Jocko's to cafeteria food) unless you eating at Outback Steak House!!

People surely know great steak when they taste it, but Jocko's is far better than some little wanna be steak house!!

I have never on earth seen huge pieces of steak in my life! all the 4 star restaurants does not even compare to Jockos, I do agree, the wait is not the best part, but when we make reservations and there are 6-8 of us at the bar, drinking and being LOUD , the time goes by fast!!!! So, heres a tip for you, just drink and make sure you are with alot of people and the time does go by fast, being sober and with only a few people with you can seem like an enternity!!. The one downside about this place is that im sure they make sooo much money buy they cant remodel the place or even fix up the rest rooms, ima big girl and the stalls or tiny!! Jockos is a hole in the wall but the food is to die for! I recommend the Filets!!! Its a 3 hour drive from where im at, but its worth it!

Anyone that would dare give Joco's a bad review does not know good BBQ if it smacked them in the face. Go back to the valley or what ever sh*thole part of CA you cheep b*tches cant afford to live in the central coast. I give them a 5/5 best steak hands down.

Well if you like Cafeteria food u should go here. Cheap meat cooked over oak. They bring you Crackers and salsa to start i guess the salsa is for the steak. Where i come from we like our meat to be as close to prime as possible I'd bet they are using select for some and maby choice for other cuts. but what do i know except i want to take my friends and family some where it dont feel like highschool.

I honestly cannot say that Jocko's "has the best steak I've ever had in my life!" Sorry, but that just isn't true. Ruth's Chris yes, Jocko's no. And they don't "get it right every time". I went as one of a party of 4. Here's what we ordered pork chops, filet mignon, "extra" 26 oz New York, and I had the "normal sized" New York. All steaks were ordered medium rare, but mine was medium well - way overcooked for my taste. I didn't send it back because we didn't want to wait another half hour for another one. Everything else at the table required extra cooking time according to the menu - they post a nice warning about this being the case for extra sized items and pork chops. A thick filet will always take longer than an equal sized NY steak. Anyway, it could be that they started all of our food at the same time and mine got over cooked as a result. I was saved by table mates who shared their food with me. The filet was the best, being very tender and cooked to perfection. The flavor was truly excellent. As was the extra sized NY, also cooked perfectly. The pork chops were amazing. I've never had better, fully cooked yet juicy and what a great BBQ flavor. The baked potatoes were also excellent. Salads and other sides below average. Of course, people don't come here for salads and sides, they come here for massive quantities of well prepared meat. My steak was "well" all right. Definitely not the best ever, but up there in the top 30%.

Feb.2008 season when the area was in its down time, so being a resort type area ,NOT. So there is just no excuse for having to wait for this restaurant. IF YOU ARE A LOCAL AND THIER FRIEND YOU WILL BE SEATED ALMOST AS SOON AS YOU COME THRU THIER DOOR. I WATCHED IT HAPPEN. ONE LADY BROUGHT THE HOSTESS A GIFT AND THEY HUGGED , THIS AFTER OUR 4O MINUTE WAIT. I travel all over the U.S. AND I WOULD NOT SEND A FRIEND TO THIS PLACE. We had reservations, and we did arrive early, but no matter. As we set in the waiting area (which was so small....people had no place to go or set . the bar was full of others waiting)
we still was not seated FOR 30 minutes after our reserved time. And the reason I could see is the people who were in side eating were finished and setting at their table visiting, for over a hour. possibly more , we showed up at 6:00(hoping to have a drink in the bar ourselves), our reservations were for 7:00 NO ONE LEFT EITHER SIDE OF THE DINING AREA FOR A SOLID HOUR AND A HALF...
They allow people to take up the time at the tables, The profit the restaurant must be losing is horrible. And the wait staff is losing tips. I know you can't rush people , but this was so stupid. They should and can start a max time, For their and all involved's time and money.
But after we got seated , my husband and I was so hungry, and was sure hoping for NO dissapiontments.
WE WERE WRONG. The steak was just so so. and the price was even worse. Thinking we were getting the works, we ordered the complete meal.. steak , salad(lettuce only) Baked potato, plus a desert....A cup of Ice cream.....DUH . I can have a cup of ice cream at home, and as far as the whole meal goes I can do the whole meal at home cheaper and tastier.. And I do mean cheaper ....Now you say so stay home if you can , After that we have... and I don't have to wait forever.

Cons: EVERYTHING

I have been to Jocko's at least 5 times now. I live in Southern California, but heard about this place thru locals in Pismo. I have never seen bigger portions of meat served ANYWHERE! The pork chops are to die for, the lamb chops, I swear, the lambs must be on steroids, as these are the biggest lamb chops I have ever seen!! My first encounter with Jocko's, I had the sirloin sandwich...it was enough to feed 3 people! Yes, the place is a little old fashioned, the tables are close together, but if you can look past that, the food is what this place is all about! I have not been disappointed with anything I have ordered there....I even went for breakfast one morning, and let me tell you, the breakfast portions are just about as big as the dinner portions! The Ham Steak was enough to feed 4 people! I love this place and I look forward to my next visit this week!! This place is the best kept secret in this area!!!

Cons: Sometimes a wait.....it's a diner material ambiance...tables are close together

I agree with most of the other reviews with a few exceptions. The steaks are exceptional, and huge. We tried the sirloin and the filet and both were fantastic!! Someone else wrote that the ribs were great, so we tried the ribs and were instantly sorry. The ribs were dry, dry, dry - almost jerky. We each tried one rib, and all the rest were left behind - we didn't even take them home. I really can't suggest you stray off the list of steaks. (interesting that the waitress never asked what was wrong with the pile of untouched ribs ?)
Other details; on a Saturday night with a reservation, we waited less than 1/2 hour - not bad. The hostess was quite nice. The decor was not as bad in my mind as others have written. The ambiance is very basic, but not horrible. It would be possible to take a date here, however the tables are crowded close together and the noise level gets right up there - don't count on a conversation.

Pros: wonderful steaks, great steaks, exceptional steaks

Cons: low ambience, closely crowded tables, noisy, food is average except for the steaks

I even went to french culinary school and the steak cooked over the oak fire was the best I ever had. The sides could use some work, but I would drive 2 hours to eat here. You spend 20-30 buck for a pound to a pound and a half of meat and everything is included. salad, bread, beans, vegetable, ice cream and coffee. sure beats peter lugars. Dont bring a date there though cause it looks like the basement of as church.

After hearing and reading all the glowing reviews about Jocko's , my wife and I finally made it there one Sunday and were not disappointed. We have eaten at many high-end steakhouses in LA and Vegas and Jocko's beats them all when it comes to the most important issue......TASTE!!! Jocko's doesn't use fancy sauces or butter to give it's meat flavor. They simply season it perfectly and cook it over oak which gives it the most exquisite flavor we have ever tasted. My wife had a huge filet and I had a double pork chop. We loved the filet, but we loved the pork chop even more! For the quality and quantity of the food you get the prices are extremely reasonable. We can't help bringing up Jocko's when we are eating a substandard steak at some chic overpriced LA eatery.

I've been eating at Jockos every so often for years, and it's like nowhere else. Sure, the wait can be long, even with a reservation, the decor seems to be something Goodwill diddn't take, but it's all part of the charm. Yes, charm, you remember charm right? IT's a throwback to before the days of lightning fast, assembly line food. Here, quality BBQ is what's served, nothing more, nothing less. In fact, the food is so good, you'll The waitresses are friendly if you're new, but if you're a regular they take REAL good care of you. After going there a few times, you begin to enjoy all the quirks, like chating with others in line while you wait, or getting seated on a long table and getting to know your neighbors. It's truly like nowhere else.

This is the best place my husband and I have found for Beef Ribs!!! No place else can compare.

Sorry to say that once we tried the Ribs we have not tried anything else at Jocko's. We are so hooked on them that we want them every time.

We keep trying ribs other places and we request ribs with the BBQ sauce on the side, but they are never as good as they are here. You know that a Rib is good if the flavor is good without the sauce. We know that the flavor must come from the way they cook the meat on the outside grill. The Santa Maria style cooking with the salsa on the table is great.

In the past, when gas was not so high, we would drive from Los Angeles just to have dinner at Jocko's. That is a three or four hour drive just to eat here.

I am so glad that they have not tired to upgrade the place and become more main-stream or chain style, if they did I think they would lose something in the flavor. This place is one of the last small town hole in the wall kind of joints, that you are lucky to find out about.

We can not wait until we can afford the trip again.

After hearing so much about this place we booked a reservation, called midmorning on a Saturday and the soonest they could get us a table for eleven people was 9:00 p.m. We didn't get seated until nearly 10:15 p.m. By then we were beyond hungry and when the food finally came, nearly 11:00 p.m., it didn't seem very appetizing. The lighting was dim and depressing; very outdated. The men's room had one small stall with a broken latch and graffiti written all over. Long folding tables and chairs from the 50's. Very loud and crowded. For a piece of meat? I'm sorry but it was not worth the wait or the price to me. If there is one thing I cannot stand, it's a restaurant that rakes in the money like that place and does not invest a dime in making the place a more pleasant dining experience for their customers.

Do you like a good steak but don't necessarily want to pay over $50 for it? Try Jocko's if you're in the Nipomo area. My wife and I had the spencer steak (hers medium, mine rare). The 4 inch thick steak grilled over red oak was fabulous. Be careful not to chow down too much on the relish plate and bread that come before the meal or you won't be able to put away the main course. We had no room for dessert, so I can't comment on that. Our 6-year old daughter liked her spaghetti, but this place caters to beef lovers.

Get there early or make a reservation. We got there at 4:30 PM and were seated within 10 minutes, but the line behind us was long.

The decor is "quaint" or spartan, depending on your point of view. This is no swanky date restaurant-- it's a cinder block building containing benches covered with red-checkered plastic tablecloths.

Jocko's has been serving up hearty steaks grilled over an open Oak barbeque for years. The locals all love this place.
While the steaks are quite good, I think Jocko's is over-rated. A good steak here runs about $25. But the restaurant is over-crowded with tables, the service is spartan, and restaurant is run down. The experience is suited to rugged cattle ranchers, oil drillers, and retirees who come in driving their pick up trucks. The atmosphere is a hoot, and the people are fun. But for that kind of money, you can get good steak in more elegant surroundings. Try Shaw's or the Hitching Post in Casmalia.

I've traveled all across America and around the world seven times, nothing compares to the steaks at Jocko's! From Seattle to L.A. across America from Boston to Florida and all through Europe from Amsterdam to Italy Jocko's is still #1. Well worth the drive form L.A. along scenic P.C.H. or the 101 freeway. For over 30 years I've had the pleasure of dining @ Jocko's and cannot find a quality steak that compares. Yes the ambiance is not 5 ***** but Jocko's is about true quality steaks and value. The hostess is a pitbull but the crowd dictates the environment. Arrive early with reservations and yes expect a wait with reservations, sigh in, head for the bar, order a few drinks, walk out back and perfect how you want your steak prepared and before you know it it's time to experience the best steak on earth. If you?re looking for a 6oz. $50.00 steak to match your epicurean dining pleasure L.A. is cluttered with numerous restaurants waiting for you. When your ready for quality and value head north pass Santa Maria, cross over the bridge, pass the speedway, exit @ Tefftt St. turn right, down the hill and your nose will guide you from there. Jocko?s Steak house Semplicemento Perfetto, Bravo Jocko?s Bravo!!

Pros: The steak, and the steak with a side order of steak.

Cons: The well worth the wait, ambience is 1970's

This place is kinda obscure and is located in Nipomo which is kinda in the middle of nowhere...but let me tell you if you want a good steak then make the trip to Jacko's. This place is home of the steak!! The portions are large and food is AWESOME; but it doesnt come cheap.

They also have a small burger joint that serves lunch with the best burgers in town.

OK, this is a fantastic place to get a great steak dinner. This is also a great place to get a great drink in a casual atmosphere. So in such a place, we expect to be the only people there?

Yes, there is a wait. Popularity brings people, which translates to a wait. If the place was empty, and you got seated right away (especially on weekends as I read here), would you eat there?

Morton's, Ruth Chris and Flemings might have great "presentation" and atmosphere. But can you get a steak of this quality? And at this price? I have eaten at all of these and like Jocko's better.

Apparently, the other reviewers do not appreciate what they have there. I for one - do!!

Thanks Jocko's!!

Be assured Jocko's is an experience. Long waits on the weekends. A drill sargent for a hostess, but she is actually quite good handling the crowds that show up.

Once inside, you may wonder about the food, because the decor is early VFW hall. Long folding tables with plastic tablecloths and mismatched country curtains.

Warning: The bar's decor is about 30 deer, bear, and other animal heads staring down at you.

If you want your steak perfect, go out back to the huge outdoor barbeque, and tell the friendly people how you like it. Baked potato with trimmings. Salad is not fancy, but fresh. Ask for the salad dressing on the side. Choose your drink.

Get a doggie bag and save room for dessert. Dessert is Bernardo'z Award-Winning Fresh Ice Cream. Totally delicious in contrast to the savory steak.

All for about twenty dollars a person. Fabulous value.

Can't imagine Melanie's rationale; suspicious. I've eaten at Jocko's for 36 years. The last few, they've been serving, with extreme consistency/dependability, the absolute best BBQ'd steaks anywhere in the USA; I've tried them all over the country. I've taken many visitors from everywhere; no one has disagreed yet with that assessment. I've seen the ebb/flow of steak quality at all Santa Maria area palaces over the years; right now, Jocko's are the best any have ever served. Yes, the wait's a test of endurance. Yes, it's crowded. Yes, the ambience is plain. But if you want the best steak money can buy, at a bargain price to boot, this is where you go. I'd say it's the best in the world (and I've eaten steak in a lot of countries), but tastes vary too much to make that claim for any restaurant. Melanie, you need your taste buds recalibrated!

Our steaks were both cooked improperly. Sent them back, no credit on bill. The salad was only iceberg and drenched in dressing to the point that it was unedible. The waitress was shocked that we were unsatisfied, the manager wouldn't come out to speak with us, we had to go to the kitchen. He refused to adjust our bill fairly. We have eaten in numerous steakhouses in 14 states and this was definately the worst. Good luck.

Yes, the wait can be long... But when have you not had to wait for a meal that was worlds better than the competition can provide? It's worth every second. The small Spencer can feed two people but I wouldn't want to fight someone for it. I've had what are supposed to be fantastic steaks all over the world but this was without a doubt the best I've ever had. If you are within 100 miles of Nipomo, for God's sake, STOP IN!

For around $20, you can get an amazing and perfectly cooked steak, baked potato, dessert, salad, relish and garlic bread. I'd happily have paid twice as much. The wait, however, is daunting! On a Wednesday night, it was almost 2 hours long. Even with a reservation, we waited 30 minutes. The ambience isn't much to speak of and the location is a bit remote, but it's definitely worth the trip!
