2 Fab choices - Otherwise Marginal
by Michele V.
This restaurant is very popular locally. The restaurant has the nicest decor and atmosphere of all the Asian restaurants in town, which may be one reason why so many go, especially on dates or to "impress" out of town guests, etc. They also serve a dish of freshly fried chow mein upon seating, which is fairly good and a welcome change. However, I find almost all dishes to be only average. Their barbeque pork, sweet and sour dishes, and egg rolls are unpalatable. When sweet and sour sauce is orange, you know you are in for an "Americanized" version which is usually a canned sauce. The HUGE exception are two stand-out dishes; Singapore Noodles and Honey Glazed Shrimp. I suggest your request they add extra noodles to the Singapore dish - lots - there are so many ingredients that more noodles are needed to round it out, (or ask them to prepare without the noodles and add steamed rice on the side). Either way, a serving for two will also provide a full meal of leftovers for two also, especially when ordering something else. The other stellar performer is Honey Glazed Shrimp. This fabulous dish of lightly breaded shrimp and loaded with crisp, salty cashews has a slightly sweet and flavorful "glaze" which adds a wonderful delicate addition. The glaze is just that - light drizzled over the dish so that the shrimp and cashews retain their crispness. The only reason I go here is for these two dishes. It puzzles me why a restaurant that can prepare two such excellant and diffreent dishes otherwise offers only marginal, unimaginative and bland choices. Try the Golden Palace next time!
